Frascati 22 GeV Workshop Summary

This document summarizes the outcomes of the "Science at the Luminosity Frontier: Jefferson Lab at 22 GeV" workshop, held at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati in December 2024. The primary goal of the workshop was to critically assess and refine the scientific case for a proposed energy upgrade of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) to 22 GeV. This document intends to capture the progress on developing the scientific case since the publication of a lengthy "White Paper" in summer 2024 signed by about 450 authors.

Summary of Topical Group on Hadron Spectroscopy (RF07) Rare Processes and Precision Frontier of Snowmass 2021

Hadron spectroscopy, the driving force of high-energy physics in its early decades, has experienced a renaissance in interest over the past 20 years due to the discovery of scores of new, potentially "exotic states" (tetraquarks, pentaquarks, hybrid mesons, glueballs), as well as the observation of many new "conventional" hadrons. The new discoveries expose our lack of understanding about hadronic states, beyond just a few low excitations of the simplest quark configurations. Even so, no single theoretical interpretation (such as hadron molecules, threshold effects, diquark compounds, or others) as yet successfully accommodates all of the new multiquark particles, while a great deal of work remains to extract signals of hybrids and glueballs from reaction-amplitude data. This document summarizes the current state of the field from both experimental and theoretical perspectives. On the experimental side, this report summarizes the current, planned, and proposed activities of LHCb and other LHC experiments, Belle II, BESIII, and GlueX, as well as the approved Electron-Ion Collider, the proposed Super Tau-Charm factory, and other future experiments. The theoretical portion provides a brief overview of multiple phenomenological approaches studied to date, progress in rigorous studies of reaction amplitudes, and advances in lattice-QCD simulations.

Interplay of quark and meson degrees of freedom in near-threshold states: A practical parametrisation for line shapes

We propose a practical parametrisation for the line shapes of near-threshold states compatible with all requirements of unitarity and analyticity. The coupled-channel system underlying the proposed parametrisation includes bare poles and an arbitrary number of elastic and inelastic channels treated fully nonperturbatively. The resulting formulae are general enough to be used for a simultaneous analysis of the data in all available production and decay channels of the (system of) state(s) under consideration for a quite wide class of reactions. As an example, we fit the experimental data currently available for several decay channels for the charged $Z_b^{(\prime)}$ states in the spectrum of bottomonia and find a good overall description of the data. We find the present data to be consistent with the $Z_b(10610)$ as a virtual state and with the $Z_b(10650)$ as a resonance, both residing very close to the $B\bar{B}^*$ and $B^*\bar{B}^*$ threshold, respectively.

Decay widths of the spin-2 partners of the X(3872)

We consider the $X(3872)$ resonance as a $J^{PC}=1^{++}$ $D\bar D^*$ hadronic molecule. According to heavy quark spin symmetry, there will exist a partner with quantum numbers $2^{++}$, $X_{2}$, which would be a $D^*\bar D^*$ loosely bound state. The $X_{2}$ is expected to decay dominantly into $D\bar D$, $D\bar D^*$ and $\bar D D^*$ in $d$-wave. In this work, we calculate the decay widths of the $X_{2}$ resonance into the above channels, as well as those of its bottom partner, $X_{b2}$, the mass of which comes from assuming heavy flavor symmetry for the contact terms. We find partial widths of the $X_{2}$ and $X_{b2}$ of the order of a few MeV. Finally, we also study the radiative $X_2\to D\bar D^{*}γ$ and $X_{b2} \to \bar B B^{*}γ$ decays. These decay modes are more sensitive to the long-distance structure of the resonances and to the $D\bar D^{*}$ or $B\bar B^{*}$ final state interaction.

The electric dipole moment of the neutron from 2+1 flavor lattice QCD

We compute the electric dipole moment d_n of the neutron from a fully dynamical simulation of lattice QCD with 2+1 flavors of clover fermions and nonvanishing theta term. The latter is rotated into the pseudoscalar density in the fermionic action using the axial anomaly. To make the action real, the vacuum angle theta is taken to be purely imaginary. The physical value of d_n is obtained by analytic continuation. We find d_n = -3.8(2)(9) x 10^{-16} [theta e cm], which, when combined with the experimental limit on d_n, leads to the upper bound theta < 7.6 x 10^{-11}.

Bound states on the lattice with partially twisted boundary conditions

We propose a method to study the nature of exotic hadrons by determining the wave function renormalization constant $Z$ from lattice simulations. It is shown that, instead of studying the volume-dependence of the spectrum, one may investigate the dependence of the spectrum on the twisting angle, imposing twisted boundary conditions on the fermion fields on the lattice. In certain cases, e.g., the case of the $DK$ bound state which is addressed in detail, it is demonstrated that the partial twisting is equivalent to the full twisting up to exponentially small corrections.

Hidden charm and bottom molecular states

We investigate heavy quark symmetries for heavy light meson-antimeson systems in a contact-range effective field theory. In the SU(3) light flavor limit, the leading order Lagrangian respecting heavy quark spin symmetry contains four independent counter-terms. Neglecting $1/m_Q$ corrections, three of these low energy constants can be determ1ined by theorizing a molecular description of the $X(3872)$ and $Z_b(10610)$ states. Thus, we can predict new hadronic molecules, in particular the isovector charmonium partners of the $Z_b(10610)$ and the $Z_b(10650)$ states. We also discuss hadron molecules composed of a heavy meson and a doubly-heavy baryon, which would be related to the heavy meson-antimeson molecules thanks to the heavy antiquark-diquark symmetry. Finally, we also study the $X(3872) \to D^0\bar D^0π^0$ decay, which is not only sensitive to the short distance part of the $X(3872)$ molecular wave function, as the $J/ψππ$ and $J/\psi3π$ $X(3872)$ decay modes are, but it is also affected by the long-distance structure of the resonance. Furthermore, this decay might provide some information on the interaction between the $D\bar D$ charm mesons.

Long-distance structure of the X(3872)

We investigate heavy quark symmetries for heavy meson hadronic molecules, and explore the consequences of assuming the X(3872) and $Z_b(10610)$ as an isoscalar $D\bar D^*$ and an isovector $B\bar B^*$ hadronic molecules, respectively. The symmetry allows to predict new hadronic molecules, in particular we find an isoscalar $1^{++}$ $B\bar B^*$ bound state with a mass about 10580 MeV and the isovector charmonium partners of the $Z_b(10610)$ and the $Z_b(10650)$ states. Next, we study the $X(3872) \to D^0 \bar D^0π^0$ three body decay. This decay mode is more sensitive to the long-distance structure of the X(3872) resonance than its $J/ψππ$ and $J/\psi3π$ decays, which are mainly controlled by the short distance part of the X(3872) molecular wave function. We discuss the $D^0 \bar D^0$ final state interactions, which in some situations become quite important. Indeed in these cases, a precise measurement of this partial decay width could provide precise information on the interaction strength between the $D^{(*)}\bar D^{(*)}$ charm mesons.

When hadrons become unstable: a novel type of non-analyticity in chiral extrapolations

Hadron masses show a specific dependence on the quark masses. Therefore, the variation of these masses can cause a resonance in a hadronic scattering amplitude to become a bound state. Consequently, the amplitude exhibits a non-analytic behavior at this transition. Crossed amplitudes, where the resonance can be exchanged in the t-channel, can be shown to exhibit the same phenomenon by s-->t analytic continuation. This entails possible kinks in lattice quark mass extrapolations needed to compute hadronic observables.

New insights into the neutron electric dipole moment

We analyze the CP-violating electric dipole form factor of the nucleon in the framework of covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. We give a new upper bound on the vacuum angle, |θ_0| \lesssim 2.5 \cdot 10^{-10}. The quark mass dependence of the electric dipole moment is discussed and compared to lattice QCD data. We also perform the matching between its representations in the three- and two-flavor theories.
