Neutral Excitations of Quantum Hall States: a Density Matrix Renormalization Group Study

We use the dynamical structure factors of the quantum Hall states at $ν=1/3$ and $ν=1/2$ in the lowest Landau level to study their excitation spectrum. Using the density matrix renormalization group in combination with the time-dependent variational principle on an infinite cylinder geometry, we extract the low energy properties. At $ν=1/3$, a sharp magnetoroton mode and the two-roton continuum are present and the finite-size effects can be understood using the fractional charge of the quasi-particle. At $ν=1/2$, we find low energy modes with linear dispersion and the static structure factor $\bar s(q) \sim (q\ell)^3$ in the limit $q\ell \rightarrow 0$. The properties of these modes agree quantitatively with the predictions of the composite-fermion theory placed on the infinite cylinder.

Multiple Magnetorotons and Spectral Sum Rules in Fractional Quantum Hall Systems

We study numerically the the charge neutral excitations (magnetorotons) in fractional quantum Hall systems, concentrating on the two Jain states near quarter filling, $ν=2/7$ and $ν=2/9$, and the $ν=1/4$ Fermi-liquid state itself. In contrast to the $ν=1/3$ states and the Jain states near half filling, on each of the two Jain states $ν=2/7$ and $ν=2/9$ the graviton spectral densities show two, instead of one, magnetoroton peaks. The magnetorotons have spin 2 and have opposite chiralities in the $ν=2/7$ state and the same chirality in the $ν=2/9$ state. We also provide a numerical verification of a sum rule relating the guiding center spin $\bar s$ with the spectral densities of the stress tensor

Microscopic Diagnosis of Universal Geometric Responses in Fractional Quantum Hall Liquids

Topological quantum liquids contain internal degrees of freedom that are coupled to geometric response. Yet, an explicit and microscopic identification of geometric response remains difficult. Here, taking notable fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states as typical examples, we systematically investigate a promising protocol -- the Dehn twist deformation on the torus geometry, to probe the geometric response of correlated topological states and establish the relation between such response and the universal properties of pertinent states. Based on analytical derivations and numerical simulations, we find that the geometry-induced Berry phase encodes novel features for a broad class of FQH states at the Laughlin, hierarchy, Halperin and non-Abelian Moore-Read fillings. Our findings conclusively demonstrate that the adiabatic Dehn twist deformation can faithfully capture the geometry of elementary FQH droplets and intrinsic modular information including topological spin and chiral central charge. Our approach provides a powerful way to reveal topological orders of generic FQH states and allows us to address previously open questions.

Fractional Quantum Hall Bilayers at Half-Filling: Tunneling-driven Non-Abelian Phase

Multicomponent quantum Hall systems with internal degrees of freedom provide a fertile ground for the emergence of exotic quantum liquids. Here we investigate the possibility of non-Abelian topological order in the half-filled fractional quantum Hall (FQH) bilayer system driven by the tunneling effect between two layers. By means of the state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group, we unveil "finger print" evidence of the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state emerging in the intermediate-tunneling regime, including the ground-state degeneracy on the torus geometry and the topological entanglement spectroscopy (entanglement spectrum and topological entanglement entropy) on the spherical geometry, respectively. Remarkably, the phase transition from the previously identified Abelian $(331)$ Halperin state to the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state is determined to be continuous, which is signaled by the continuous evolution of the universal part of the entanglement spectrum, and discontinuities in the excitation gap and the derivative of the ground-state energy. Our results not only provide a "proof-of-principle" demonstration of realizing a non-Abelian state through coupling different degrees of freedom, but also open up a possibility in FQH bilayer systems for detecting different chiral $p-$wave pairing states.

Geometry of Landau orbits in the absence of rotational symmetry

The integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) is usually modeled using Galilean-invariant or rotationally-invariant Landau levels. However, these are not generic symmetries of electrons moving in a crystalline background, even in the low-density continuum limit. We present a treatment of the IQHE which abandons the Galilean dispersion relation while keeping inversion symmetry. We define an emergent metric $g^n_{ab}$ for each Landau level with a reformulation of the Hall viscosity. The metric is then used to define a guiding-center coherent state and the wavefunctions are holomorphic functions of $z^*$ times a Gaussian. By numerically studying cases with quartic dispersion, we show that the number of the zeroes of the wavefunction encircled by the semiclassical orbit, denoted by $n$, defines a "topological spin" $s_n$ by $s_n=n+\frac{1}{2}$, with its original definition as an "intrinsic angular momentum" no longer valid without rotational symmetry. At the end of the paper we show our results for the density and current responses which differentiate between diagonal and Landau-level-mixing terms. In conclusion, this treatment extracts topological information without resort to Galilean or rotational symmetry, and also reveals more generic geometric structures.

Ground State Properties of Antiferromagnetic Chains with Unrestricted Spin: Integer Spin Chains as Realisations of the O(3) Non-Linear Sigma Model

A continuum limit treatment of planar spin chains with arbitrary S is presented. The difference between integer and half-integer spins is emphasised. While isotropic half-integer spin chains are gapless, and have power-law decay of correlations at T = 0 with exponent eta = 1, integer spin systems have a singlet ground state with a gap for S=1 excitations and exponential decay of correlations. The easy-plane to easy-axis transition is described. Note: this is a verbatim transcription of ILL preprint SP-81/95, which is cited in a number of places, but was rejected for publication in 1981, and remained unpublished in this original form, which gives somewhat different arguments for the central result as compared to the later paper finally published in Phys. Lett. 93A, 464 (1983); many thanks to Jeno Solyom for preserving this historical document.

Probing the geometry of the Laughlin state

It has recently been pointed out that phases of matter with intrinsic topological order, like the fractional quantum Hall states, have an extra dynamical degree of freedom that corresponds to quantum geometry. Here we perform extensive numerical studies of the geometric degree of freedom for the simplest example of fractional quantum Hall states -- the filling $ν=1/3$ Laughlin state. We perturb the system by a smooth, spatially dependent metric deformation and measure the response of the Hall fluid, finding it to be proportional to the Gaussian curvature of the metric. Further, we generalize the concept of coherent states to formulate the bulk off-diagonal long range order for the Laughlin state, and compute the deformations of the metric in the vicinity of the edge of the system. We introduce a "pair amplitude" operator and show that it can be used to numerically determine the intrinsic metric of the Laughlin state. These various probes are applied to several experimentally relevant settings that can expose the quantum geometry of the Laughlin state, in particular to systems with mass anisotropy and in the presence of an electric field gradient.

The Fractional Quantum Hall States at $ν=13/5$ and $12/5$ and their Non-Abelian Nature

We investigate the nature of the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state at filling factor $ν=13/5$, and its particle-hole conjugate state at $12/5$, with the Coulomb interaction, and address the issue of possible competing states. Based on a large-scale density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation in spherical geometry, we present evidence that the physics of the Coulomb ground state (GS) at $ν=13/5$ and $12/5$ is captured by the $k=3$ parafermion Read-Rezayi RR state, $\text{RR}_3$. We first establish that the state at $ν=13/5$ is an incompressible FQH state, with a GS protected by a finite excitation gap, with the shift in accordance with the RR state. Then, by performing a finite-size scaling analysis of the GS energies for $ν=12/5$ with different shifts, we find that the $\text{RR}_3$ state has the lowest energy among different competing states in the thermodynamic limit. We find the fingerprint of $\text{RR}_3$ topological order in the FQH $13/5$ and $12/5$ states, based on their entanglement spectrum and topological entanglement entropy, both of which strongly support their identification with the $\text{RR}_3$ state. Furthermore, by considering the shift-free infinite-cylinder geometry, we expose two topologically-distinct GS sectors, one identity sector and a second one matching the non-Abelian sector of the Fibonacci anyonic quasiparticle, which serves as additional evidence for the $\text{RR}_3$ state at $13/5$ and $12/5$.

Topological Characterization of Non-Abelian Moore-Read State using Density-Matrix Renormailzation Group

The non-Abelian topological order has attracted a lot of attention for its fundamental importance and exciting prospect of topological quantum computation. However, explicit demonstration or identification of the non-Abelian states and the associated statistics in a microscopic model is very challenging. Here, based on density-matrix renormalization group calculation, we provide a complete characterization of the universal properties of bosonic Moore-Read state on Haldane honeycomb lattice model at filling number $ν=1$ for larger systems, including both the edge spectrum and the bulk anyonic quasiparticle (QP) statistics. We first demonstrate that there are three degenerating ground states, for each of which there is a definite anyonic flux threading through the cylinder. We identify the nontrivial countings for the entanglement spectrum in accordance with the corresponding conformal field theory. Through inserting the $U(1)$ charge flux, it is found that two of the ground states can be adiabatically connected through a fermionic charge-$\textit{e}$ QP being pumped from one edge to the other, while the ground state in Ising anyon sector evolves back to itself. Furthermore, we calculate the modular matrices $\mathcal{S}$ and $\mathcal{U}$, which contain all the information for the anyonic QPs. In particular, the extracted quantum dimensions, fusion rule and topological spins from modular matrices positively identify the emergence of non-Abelian statistics following the $SU(2)_2$ Chern-Simons theory.

Attachment of Surface "Fermi Arcs" to the Bulk Fermi Surface: "Fermi-Level Plumbing" in Topological Metals

The role of "Fermi arc" surface-quasiparticle states in "topological metals" (where some Fermi surface sheets have non-zero Chern number) is examined. They act as "Fermi-level plumbing" conduits that transfer quasiparticles among groups of apparently-disconnected Fermi sheets with non-zero Chern numbers to maintain equality of their chemical potentials, which is required by gauge invariance. Fermi arcs have a chiral tangential attachment to the surface projections of sheets of the bulk Fermi Surface: the total Chern number of each projection equals the net chirality of arc-attachments to it. Information from the Fermi arcs is needed to unambiguously determine the quantized part of the anomalous Hall effect that is not determined at the bulk Fermi surface.

Entanglement entropy of the $ν=1/2$ composite fermion non-Fermi liquid state

The so-called ``non-Fermi liquid'' behavior is very common in strongly correlated systems. However, its operational definition in terms of ``what it is not'' is a major obstacle against theoretical understanding of this fascinating correlated state. Recently there has been much interest in entanglement entropy as a theoretical tool to study non-Fermi liquids. So far explicit calculations have been limited to models without direct experimental realizations. Here we focus on a two dimensional electron fluid under magnetic field and filling fraction $ν=1/2$, which is believed to be a non-Fermi liquid state. Using the composite fermion (CF) wave-function which captures the $ν=1/2$ state very accurately, we compute the second Rényi entropy using variational Monte-Carlo technique and an efficient parallel algorithm. We find the entanglement entropy scales as $L\log L$ with the length of the boundary $L$ as it does for free fermions, albeit with a pre-factor twice that of the free fermion. We contrast the results against theoretical conjectures and discuss the implications of the results.

Guiding-center Hall viscosity and intrinsic dipole moment along edges of incompressible fractional quantum Hall fluids

The discontinuity of guiding-center Hall viscosity (a bulk property) at edges of incompressible quantum Hall fluids is associated with the presence of an intrinsic electric dipole moment on the edge. If there is a gradient of drift velocity due to a non-uniform electric field, the discontinuity in the induced stress is exactly balanced by the electric force on the dipole. The total Hall viscosity has two distinct contributions: a "trivial" contribution associated with the geometry of the Landau orbits, and a non-trivial contribution associated with guiding-center correlations. We describe a relation between the guiding-center edge-dipole moment and "momentum polarization", which relates the guiding-center part of the bulk Hall viscosity to the "orbital entanglement spectrum(OES)". We observe that using the computationally-more-onerous "real-space entanglement spectrum (RES)" just adds the trivial Landau-orbit contribution to the guiding-center part. This shows that all the non-trivial information is completely contained in the OES, which also exposes a fundamental topological quantity $γ$ = $\tilde c-ν$, the difference between the "chiral stress-energy anomaly" (or signed conformal anomaly) and the chiral charge anomaly. This quantity characterizes correlated fractional quantum Hall fluids, and vanishes in uncorrelated integer quantum Hall fluids.

Nature of Quasielectrons and the Continuum of Neutral Bulk Excitations in the Laughlin Quantum Hall Fluids

We construct model wavefunctions for a family of single-quasielectron states supported by the $ν=1/3$ fractional quantum Hall (FQH) fluid. The charge $e^*$ = $e/3$ quasielectron state is identified as a composite of a charge-$2e^*$ quasiparticle and a $-e^*$ quasihole, orbiting around their common center of charge with relative angular momentum $n\hbar > 0$, and corresponds precisely to the "composite fermion" construction based on a filled $n=0$ Landau level plus an extra particle in level $n > 0$. An effective three-body model (one $2e^*$ quasiparticle and two $-e^*$ quasiholes) is introduced to capture the essential physics of the neutral bulk excitations.

Identifying Non-Abelian Topological Order through Minimal Entangled States

The topological order is equivalent to the pattern of long-range quantum entanglements, which cannot be measured by any local observable. Here we perform an exact diagonalization study to establish the non-Abelian topological order through entanglement entropy measurement. We focus on the quasiparticle statistics of the non-Abelian Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states on the lattice boson models. We identify multiple independent minimal entangled states (MESs) in the groundstate manifold on a torus. The extracted modular $\mathcal{S}$ matrix from MESs faithfully demonstrates the Majorana quasiparticle or Fibonacci quasiparticle statistics, including the quasiparticle quantum dimensions and the fusion rules for such systems. These findings support that MESs manifest the eigenstates of quasiparticles for the non-Abelian topological states and encode the full information of the topological order.

Minimal Entangled States and Modular Matrix for Fractional Quantum Hall Effect in Topological Flat Bands

We perform an exact diagonalization study of the topological order in topological flat band models through calculating entanglement entropy and spectra of low energy states. We identify multiple independent minimal entangled states, which form a set of orthogonal basis states for the ground-state manifold. We extract the modular transformation matrices S (U) which contains the information of mutual (self) statistics, quantum dimensions and fusion rule of quasi-particles. Moreover, we demonstrate that these matrices are robust and universal in the whole topological phase against different perturbations until the quantum phase transition takes place.

Quantum Phase Transitions and the ν=5/2 Fractional Hall State in Wide Quantum Wells

We study the nature of the ν=5/2 quantum Hall state in wide quantum wells under the mixing of electronic subbands and Landau levels. We introduce a general method to analyze the Moore-Read Pfaffian state and its particle-hole conjugate, the anti-Pfaffian, under periodic boundary conditions in a "quartered" Brillouin zone scheme containing both even and odd numbers of electrons. We examine the rotational quantum numbers on the torus, and show spontaneous breaking of the particle-hole symmetry can be observed in finite-size systems. In the presence of electronic-subband and Landau-level mixing the particle-hole symmetry is broken in such a way that the anti-Pfaffian is unambiguously favored, and becomes more robust in the vicinity of a transition to the compressible phase, in agreement with recent experiments.

Band mass anisotropy and the intrinsic metric of fractional quantum Hall systems

It was recently pointed out that topological liquid phases arising in the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) are not required to be rotationally invariant, as most variational wavefunctions proposed to date have been. Instead, they possess a geometric degree of freedom corresponding to a shear deformation that acts like an intrinsic metric. We apply this idea to a system with an anisotropic band mass, as is intrinsically the case in many-valley semiconductors such as AlAs and Si, or in isotropic systems like GaAs in the presence of a tilted magnetic field, which breaks the rotational invariance. We perform exact diagonalization calculations with periodic boundary conditions (torus geometry) for various filling fractions in the lowest, first and second Landau levels. In the lowest Landau level, we demonstrate that FQHE states generally survive the breakdown of rotational invariance by moderate values of the band mass anisotropy. At 1/3 filling, we generate a variational family of Laughlin wavefunctions parametrized by the metric degree of freedom. We show that the intrinsic metric of the Laughlin state adjusts as the band mass anisotropy or the dielectric tensor are varied, while the phase remains robust. In the n=1 Landau level, mass anisotropy drives transitions between incompressible liquids and compressible states with charge density wave ordering. In n>=2 Landau levels, mass anisotropy selects and enhances stripe ordering with compatible wave vectors at partial 1/3 and 1/2 fillings.

Model anisotropic quantum Hall states

Model quantum Hall states including Laughlin, Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states are generalized into appropriate anisotropic form. The generalized states are exact zero-energy eigenstates of corresponding anisotropic two- or multi-body Hamiltonians, and explicitly illustrate the existence of geometric degrees of in the fractional quantum Hall effect. These generalized model quantum Hall states can provide a good description of the quantum Hall system with anisotropic interactions. Some numeric results of these anisotropic quantum Hall states are also presented.

Model Wavefunctions for the Collective Modes and the Magneto-roton Theory of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

We construct model wavefunctions for the collective modes of fractional quantum Hall systems. The wavefunctions are expressed in terms of symmetric polynomials characterized by a root partition and a "squeezed" basis, and show excellent agreement with exact diagonalization results for finite systems. In the long wavelength limit, the model wavefunctions reduce to those predicted by the single-mode approximation, and remain accurate at energies above the continuum of roton pairs.

Fractional Quantum Hall States at 1/3 and 5/2 Filling: the Density-Matrix Renormalization Group Calculations

In this paper, the density-matrix renormalization group method is employed to investigate the fractional quantum Hall effect at filling fractions $ν=1/3$ and 5/2. We first present benchmark results at both filling fractions for large system sizes to show the accuracy as well as the capability of the numerical algorithm. Furthermore, we show that by keeping a large number of basis states, one can also obtain accurate entanglement spectrum at $ν=5/2$ for large system with electron number up to $N_e=34$, much larger than systems previously studied. Based on a finite-size scaling analysis, we demonstrate that the entanglement gap defined by Li and Haldane is finite in the thermodynamic limit, which characterizes the topological order of the FQHE state.

Geometrical Description of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

The fundamental collective degree of freedom of fractional quantum Hall states is identified as a unimodular two-dimensional spatial metric that characterizes the local shape of the correlations of the incompressible fluid. Its quantum fluctuations are controlled by a topologically-quantized "guiding-center spin". Charge fluctuations are proportional to its Gaussian curvature.

Hierarchical structure in the orbital entanglement spectrum in Fractional Quantum Hall systems

We investigate the non-universal part of the orbital entanglement spectrum (OES) of the nu = 1/3 fractional quantum Hall effect (FQH) ground-state with Coulomb interactions. The non-universal part of the spectrum is the part that is missing in the Laughlin model state OES whose level counting is completely determined by its topological order. We find that the OES levels of the Coulomb interaction ground-state are organized in a hierarchical structure that mimic the excitation-energy structure of the model pseudopotential Hamiltonian which has a Laughlin ground state. These structures can be accurately modeled using Jain's "composite fermion" quasihole-quasiparticle excitation wavefunctions. To emphasize the connection between the entanglement spectrum and the energy spectrum, we also consider the thermodynamical OES of the model pseudopotential Hamiltonian at finite temperature. The observed good match between the thermodynamical OES and the Coulomb OES suggests a relation between the entanglement gap and the true energy gap.

Self-duality and long-wavelength behavior of the Landau-level guiding-center structure function, and the shear modulus of fractional quantum Hall fluids

A remarkable self-duality of the "guiding-center" structure function s(q) of particles in a partially-filled 2D Landau level is used to express the long-wavelength collective excitation energy of fractional quantum Hall fluids in terms of a shear modulus. A bound on the small-q behavior of s(q) is given.

Mapping the braiding properties of the Moore-Read state

In this paper we explore the braiding properties of the Moore-Read fractional Hall sequence, which amounts to computing the adiabatic evolution of the Hall liquid when the anyons are moved along various trajectories. In this work, the anyons are pinned to precise spatial configurations by using specific external potentials. Such external potentials break the translational symmetry and it appears that one will be forced to simulate the braidings on the entire many-body Hilbert space, an absolutely prohibitive scenario. We demonstrate how to overcome this difficulty and obtain the exact braidings for fairly large Hall systems. For this, we show that the incompressible state of a general $(k,m)$ fractional Hall sequence can be viewed as the unique zero mode of a specific Hamiltonian $H^{(k,m)}$, whose form is explicitly derived by using k-particles creation operators. The compressible Hall states corresponding to $n$$\times$$k$ anyons fixed at $w_1$,...,$w_{nk}$ are shown to be the zero modes of a pinning Hamiltonian $H^{(k,m)}_{w_1,...,w_{nk}}$, which is also explicitly derived. The zero modes of $H^{(k,m)}_{w_1,...,w_{nk}}$ are shown to be contained in the space of the zero modes of $H^{(k,m)}$. Therefore, the computation of the braidings can be done entirely within this space, which we map out for a number of Hall systems. Using this efficient computational method, we study various properties of the Moore-Read states. In particular, we give direct confirmation of their topological and non-abelian properties that were previously implied from the underlying Conformal Field Theory (CFT) structure of the Moore-Read state.

Particle-Hole Symmetry Breaking and the 5/2 Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

We report on the study of the fractional quantum Hall effect at the filling factor 5/2 using exact diagonalization method with torus geometry. The particle-hole symmetry breaking effect is considered using an additional three-body interaction. Both Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian states can be the ground state depending on the sign of the three-body interaction. The results of the low-energy spectrum, the wave function overlap, and the particle-hole parity evolution, have shown the clear evidence of a direct sharp transition (possibly first-order) from the Pfaffian to the anti-Pfaffian state at the Coulomb point. A quantum phase diagram is established, where one finds further transitions from the Pfaffian or anti-Pfaffian state to the nearby compressible phases induced by a change of the pseudopotential.

Topological Entanglement and Clustering of Jain Hierarchy States

We obtain the clustering properties and part of the structure of zeroes of the Jain states at filling $\frac{k}{2k+1}$: they are a direct product of a Vandermonde determinant (which has to exist for any fermionic state) and a bosonic polynomial at filling $\frac{k}{k+1}$ which vanishes when $k+1$ particles cluster together. We show that all Jain states satisfy a "squeezing rule" (they are "squeezed polynomials") which severely reduces the dimension of the Hilbert space necessary to generate them. The squeezing rule also proves the clustering conditions that these states satisfy. We compute the topological entanglement spectrum of the Jain $ν={2/5}$ state and compare it to both the Coulomb ground-state and the non-unitary Gaffnian state. All three states have very similar "low energy" structure. However, the Jain state entanglement "edge" state counting matches both the Coulomb counting as well as two decoupled U(1) free bosons, whereas the Gaffnian edge counting misses some of the "edge" states of the Coulomb spectrum. The spectral decomposition as well as the edge structure is evidence that the Jain state is universally equivalent to the ground state of the Coulomb Hamiltonian at $ν={2/5}$. The evidence is much stronger than usual overlap studies which cannot meaningfully differentiate between the Jain and Gaffnian states. We compute the entanglement gap and present evidence that it remains constant in the thermodynamic limit. We also analyze the dependence of the entanglement gap and overlap as we drive the composite fermion system through a phase transition.

Stability of Chiral Luttinger Liquids and Abelian Quantum Hall States.

A criterion is given for topological stability of Abelian quantum Hall states, and of Luttinger liquids at the boundaries between such states; this suggests a selection rule on states in the quantum Hall hierarchy theory. The linear response of Luttinger liquids to electromagnetic fields is described: the Hall conductance is quantized, irrespective of whether edge modes propagate in different directions.

Physics of the Ideal Semion Gas: Spinons and Quantum Symmetries of the Integrable Haldane-Shastry Spin Chain

Various aspects of the Haldane-Shastry spin chain with 1/r^2 exchange, and its various generalizations, are reviewed, with emphasis on its Yangian quantum group structure, and the interpretation of the model as the generalization of an ideal gas (of ``spinons'') to the case of fractional statistics. Some recent results on its dynamical correlation function are discussed, and conjectured extensions of these remarkably simple results to the $SU(n)$ model, and to the related Calogero-Sutherland model with integer coupling constant, are presented.
