Partially observed Markov random fields are variable neighborhood random fields

The present paper has two goals. First to present a natural example of a new class of random fields which are the variable neighborhood random fields. The example we consider is a partially observed nearest neighbor binary Markov random field. The second goal is to establish sufficient conditions ensuring that the variable neighborhoods are almost surely finite. We discuss the relationship between the almost sure finiteness of the interaction neighborhoods and the presence/absence of phase transition of the underlying Markov random field. In the case where the underlying random field has no phase transition we show that the finiteness of neighborhoods depends on a specific relation between the noise level and the minimum values of the one-point specification of the Markov random field. The case in which there is phase transition is addressed in the frame of the ferromagnetic Ising model. We prove that the existence of infinite interaction neighborhoods depends on the phase.

Spectral condition, hitting times and Nash inequality

Let XX be a μμ-symmetric Hunt process on a LCCB space E. For an open set G ⊆\subseteq E, let τGτ_G be the exit time of XX from G and AGA^G be the generator of the process killed when it leaves G. Let r:[0,∞[→[0,∞[r:[0,\infty[\to[0,\infty[ and R(t)=∫0tr(s)dsR (t) = \int_0^t r(s) ds. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for $\E_μ R (τ_G)<\infty$ in terms of the behavior near the origin of the spectral measure of −AG.-A^G. When r(t)=tlr(t)=t^l, l>0l>0, by means of this condition we derive the Nash inequality for the killed process. In the case of one-dimensional diffusions, this permits to show that the existence of moments of order ll for τGτ_G implies the Nash inequality of order p=l+2l+1p=\frac{l+2}{l+1} for the whole process. The associated rate of convergence of the semi-group in L2(μ)L^2(μ) is bounded by t−(l+1)t^{-(l+1)}. For diffusions in dimension greater than one, we obtain the Nash inequality of the same order under an additional non-degeneracy condition (local Poincaré inequality). Finally, we show for general Hunt processes that the Nash inequality giving rise to a convergence rate of order t−(l+1)t^{-(l+1)} of the semi-group, implies the existence of moments of order l+1−εl+1 -ε for τGτ_G, for all ε>0 ε>0.

Neighborhood radius estimation in Variable-neighborhood Random Fields

We consider random fields defined by finite-region conditional probabilities depending on a neighborhood of the region which changes with the boundary conditions. To predict the symbols within any finite region it is necessary to inspect a random number of neighborhood symbols which might change according to the value of them. In analogy to the one dimensional setting we call these neighborhood symbols the context of the region. This framework is a natural extension, to d-dimensional fields, of the notion of variable-length Markov chains introduced by Rissanen (1983) in his classical paper. We define an algorithm to estimate the radius of the smallest ball containing the context based on a realization of the field. We prove the consistency of this estimator. Our proofs are constructive and yield explicit upper bounds for the probability of wrong estimation of the radius of the context.

On some ergodicity properties for time inhomogeneous Markov processes with TT-periodic semigroup

We consider a time inhomogeneous strong Markov process (ξt)t≥0(ξ_t)_{t\ge 0} taking values in a Polish state space whose semigroup has a TT-periodic structure. We give simple conditions which imply ergodicity of the grid chain (ξkT)k∈N0(ξ_{kT})_{k\in \mathbb{N}_0} In case of dd-dimensional possibly degenerate diffusions, the conditions are stated in terms of drift and diffusion coefficient of the process.

Polynomial deviation bounds for recurrent Harris processes having general state space

Consider a strong Markov process in continuous time, taking values in some Polish state space. Recently, Douc, Fort and Guillin (2009) introduced verifiable conditions in terms of a supermartingale property implying an explicit control of modulated moments of hitting times. We show how this control can be translated into a control of polynomial moments of abstract regeneration times which are obtained by using the regeneration method of Nummelin, extended to the time-continuous context. As a consequence, if a p−p-th moment of the regeneration times exists, we obtain non asymptotic deviation bounds of the form Pν(∣1t∫0tf(Xs)ds−μ(f)∣≥≥)≤K(p)1tp−11≥2(p−1)∥f∥∞2(p−1),p≥2.P_ν(|\frac1t\int_0^tf(X_s)ds-μ(f)|\geq\ge)\leq K(p)\frac1{t^{p- 1}}\frac 1{\ge^{2(p-1)}}\|f\|_\infty^{2(p-1)}, p \geq 2. Here, ff is a bounded function and μμ is the invariant measure of the process. We give several examples, including elliptic stochastic differential equations and stochastic differential equations driven by a jump noise.

Regeneration for interacting particle systems with interactions of infinite range

We consider an interacting particle system on Zd\Z^d with finite state space and interactions of infinite range in a high-noise regime. Assuming that the rate of change is continuous and that a Dobrushin-like condition holds, we show that the process is recurrent in the sense of Harris and construct explicit regeneration times for the process in restriction to finite cylinder sets. We show that the length of a regeneration period admits exponential moments. The proof that regeneration times are almost surely finite relies on a coupled construction of generalized house-of-cards chains.

Deviation inequalities for centered additive functionals of recurrent Harris processes having general state space

Let XX be a Harris recurrent strong Markov process in continuous time with general Polish state space E,E, having invariant measure μ.μ. In this paper we use the regeneration method to derive non asymptotic deviation bounds for Px(∣∫0tf(Xs)ds∣≥t12+η≥)P_{x} (|\int_0^tf(X_s)ds|\geq t^{\frac12 + η} \ge) in the positive recurrent case, for nice functions ff with μ(f)=0μ(f) =0 (ff must be a charge). We generalize these bounds to the fully null-recurrent case in the moderate deviations regime. We obtain a Gaussian contentration bound for all functions ff which are a charge. The rate of convergence is expressed in terms of the deterministic equivalent of the process. The main ingredient of the proof is Nummelin splitting in continuous time which allows to introduce regeneration times for the process on an enlarged state space.

Polynomial bounds in the Ergodic Theorem for positive recurrent one-dimensional diffusions and integrability of hitting times

Let XX be a one dimensional positive recurrent diffusion with initial distribution νν and invariant probability μμ. Suppose that for some p>1p> 1, ∃a∈R\exists a\in\R such that $\forall x\in\R, \E_x T_a^p<\infty$ and $\E_νT_a^{p/2}<\infty$, where TaT_a is the hitting time of aa. For such a diffusion, we derive non asymptotic deviation bounds of the form ν(∣1t∫0tf(Xs)ds−μ(f)∣≥≥)≤K(p)1tp/21≥pA(f)p.¶_ν (|\frac1t\int_0^tf(X_s)ds-μ(f)|\geq\ge)\leq K(p)\frac1{t^{p/2}}\frac 1{\ge^p}A(f)^p. Here ff bounded or bounded and compactly supported and A(f)=∥f∥∞A(f)=\|f\|_{\infty} when ff is bounded and A(f)=μ(∣f∣)A(f)=μ(|f|) when ff is bounded and compactly supported. We also give, under some conditions on the coefficients of XX, a polynomial control of $\E_xT_a^p$ from above and below. This control is based on a generalized Kac's formula (see theorem \ref{thm:mainKac}) for the moments $\E_x f(T_a)$ of a differentiable function ff.

Perfect simulation of infinite range Gibbs measures and coupling with their finite range approximations

In this paper we address the questions of perfectly sampling a Gibbs measure with infinite range interactions and of perfectly sampling the measure together with its finite range approximations. We solve these questions by introducing a perfect simulation algorithm for the measure and for the coupled measures. The algorithm works for general Gibbsian interaction under requirements on the tails of the interaction. As a consequence we obtain an upper bound for the error we make when sampling from a finite range approximation instead of the true infinite range measure.
