Finite difference schemes for the parabolic $p$-Laplace equation

We propose a new finite difference scheme for the degenerate parabolic equation \[ \partial_t u - \mbox{div}(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u) =f, \quad p\geq 2. \] Under the assumption that the data is Hölder continuous, we establish the convergence of the explicit-in-time scheme for the Cauchy problem provided a suitable stability type CFL-condition. An important advantage of our approach, is that the CFL-condition makes use of the regularity provided by the scheme to reduce the computational cost. In particular, for Lipschitz data, the CFL-condition is of the same order as for the heat equation and independent of $p$.

Large time behavior for a nonlocal nonlinear gradient flow

We study the large time behavior of the nonlinear and nonlocal equation $$ v_t+(-Δ_p)^sv=f \, , $$ where $p\in (1,2)\cup (2,\infty)$, $s\in (0,1)$ and $$ (-Δ_p)^s v\, (x,t)=2 \,\text{pv} \int_{\mathbb{R}^n}\frac{|v(x,t)-v(x+y,t)|^{p-2}(v(x,t)-v(x+y,t))}{|y|^{n+sp}}\, dy. $$ This equation arises as a gradient flow in fractional Sobolev spaces. We obtain sharp decay estimates as $t\to\infty$. The proofs are based on an iteration method in the spirit of J. Moser previously used by P. Juutinen and P. Lindqvist.

A doubly nonlinear evolution for the optimal Poincaré inequality

We study the large time behavior of solutions of the PDE $|v_t|^{p-2}v_t=Δ_p v$. A special property of this equation is that the Rayleigh quotient $\int_Ω|Dv(x,t)|^pdx /\int_Ω|v(x,t)|^pdx$ is nonincreasing in time along solutions. As $t$ tends to infinity, this ratio converges to the optimal constant in Poincaré's inequality. Moreover, appropriately scaled solutions converge to a function for which equality holds in this inequality. An interesting limiting equation also arises when $p$ tends to infinity, which provides a new approach to approximating ground states of the infinity Laplacian.

Approximation of the least Rayleigh quotient for degree $p$ homogeneous functionals

We present two novel methods for approximating minimizers of the abstract Rayleigh quotient $Φ(u)/ \|u\|^p$. Here $Φ$ is a strictly convex functional on a Banach space with norm $\|\cdot\|$, and $Φ$ is assumed to be positively homogeneous of degree $p\in (1,\infty)$. Minimizers are shown to satisfy $\partial Φ(u)- λ\mathcal{J}_p(u)\ni 0$ for a certain $λ\in \mathbb{R}$, where $\mathcal{J}_p$ is the subdifferential of $\frac{1}{p}\|\cdot\|^p$. The first approximation scheme is based on inverse iteration for square matrices and involves sequences that satisfy $$ \partial Φ(u_k)- \mathcal{J}_p(u_{k-1})\ni 0 \quad (k\in \mathbb{N}). $$ The second method is based on the large time behavior of solutions of the doubly nonlinear evolution $$ \mathcal{J}_p(\dot v(t))+\partialΦ(v(t))\ni 0 \quad(a.e.\;t>0) $$ and more generally $p$-curves of maximal slope for $Φ$. We show that both schemes have the remarkable property that the Rayleigh quotient is nonincreasing along solutions and that properly scaled solutions converge to a minimizer of $Φ(u)/ \|u\|^p$. These results are new even for Hilbert spaces and their primary application is in the approximation of optimal constants and extremal functions for inequalities in Sobolev spaces.

Equivalence of solutions to fractional $p$-Laplace type equations

In this paper, we study different notions of solutions of nonlocal and nonlinear equations of fractional $p$-Laplace type $${\rm P.V.} \int_{\mathbb R^n}\frac{|u(x)-u(y)|^{p-2}(u(x)-u(y))}{|x-y|^{n+sp}}\,dy = 0.$$ Solutions are defined via integration by parts with test functions, as viscosity solutions or via comparison. Our main result states that for bounded solutions, the three different notions coincide.

Higher Sobolev regularity for the fractional $p-$Laplace equation in the superquadratic case

We prove that for $p\ge 2$ solutions of equations modeled by the fractional $p$-Laplacian improve their regularity on the scale of fractional Sobolev spaces. Moreover, under certain precise conditions, they are in $W^{1,p}_{loc}$ and their gradients are in a fractional Sobolev space as well. The relevant estimates are stable as the fractional order of differentiation $s$ reaches $1$.

Hölder estimates and large time behavior for a nonlocal doubly nonlinear evolution

The nonlinear and nonlocal PDE $$ |v_t|^{p-2}v_t+(-Δ_p)^sv=0 \, , $$ where $$ (-Δ_p)^s v\, (x,t)=2 \,\text{PV} \int_{\mathbb{R}^n}\frac{|v(x,t)-v(x+y,t)|^{p-2}(v(x,t)-v(x+y,t))}{|y|^{n+sp}}\, dy, $$ has the interesting feature that an associated Rayleigh quotient is non-increasing in time along solutions. We prove the existence of a weak solution of the corresponding initial value problem which is also unique as a viscosity solution. Moreover, we provide Hölder estimates for viscosity solutions and relate the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the eigenvalue problem for the fractional $p$-Laplacian.

Inverse iteration for $p$-ground states

We adapt the inverse iteration method for symmetric matrices to some nonlinear PDE eigenvalue problems. In particular, for $p\in (1,\infty)$ and a given domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, we analyze a scheme that allows us to approximate the smallest value the ratio $\int_Ω|Dψ|^p dx/\int_Ω|ψ|^p dx$ can assume for functions $ψ$ that vanish on $\partial Ω$. The scheme in question also provides a natural way to approximate minimizing $ψ$. Our analysis also extends in the limit as $p\rightarrow\infty$ and thereby fashions a new approximation method for ground states of the infinity Laplacian.

Optimal regularity for the obstacle problem for the $p$-Laplacian

In this paper we discuss the obstacle problem for the $p$-Laplace operator. We prove optimal growth results for the solution. Of particular interest is the point-wise regularity of the solution at free boundary points. The most surprising result we prove is the one for the $p$-obstacle problem: Find the smallest $u$ such that $$ \hbox{div} (|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u) \leq 0, \qquad u\geq ϕ, \qquad \hbox{in } B_1, $$ with $ϕ\in C^{1,1}(B_1)$ and given boundary datum on $\partial B_1$. We prove that the solution is uniformly $C^{1,1}$ at free boundary points. Similar results are obtained in the case of an inhomogeneity belonging to $L^\infty$. When applied to the corresponding parabolic problem, these results imply that any solution which is Lipschitz in time is $C^{1,\frac{1}{p-1}}$ in the spatial variables.

Hölder estimates for viscosity solutions of equations of fractional $p$-Laplace type

We prove Hölder estimates for viscosity solutions of a class of possibly degenerate and singular equations modelled by the fractional $p$-Laplace equation $$ \text{PV} \int_{\mathbb{R}^n}\frac{|u(x)-u(x+y)|^{p-2}(u(x)-u(x+y))}{|y|^{n+sp}}\, dy =0, $$ where $s\in (0,1)$ and $p>2$ or $1/(1-s)<p<2$. Our results also apply for inhomogeneous equations with more general kernels, when $p$ and $s$ are allowed to vary with $x$, without any regularity assumption on $p$ and $s$. This complements and extends some of the recently obtained Hölder estimates for weak solutions.

The two-phase fractional obstacle problem

We study minimizers of the functional $$ \int_{B_1^+}|\nabla u|^2 x_n^a\,d x +2\int_{B_1'} (λ_+ u^++λ_- u^-)\,d x', $$ for $a\in(-1,1)$. The problem arises in connection with heat flow with control on the boundary. It can also be seen as a non-local analogue of the, by now well studied, two-phase obstacle problem. Moreover, when $u$ does not change signs this is equivalent to the fractional obstacle problem. Our main results are the optimal regularity of the minimizer and the separation of the two free boundaries $Γ^+=\partial'\{u(\cdot,0)>0\}$ and $Γ^-=\partial'\{u(\cdot,0)<0\}$ when $a\geq 0$.

Pointwise regularity of the free boundary for the parabolic obstacle problem

We study the parabolic obstacle problem $$\lap u-u_t=fχ_{\{u>0\}}, \quad u\geq 0,\quad f\in L^p \quad \mbox{with}\quad f(0)=1$$ and obtain two monotonicity formulae, one that applies for general free boundary points and one for singular free boundary points. These are used to prove a second order Taylor expansion at singular points (under a pointwise Dini condition), with an estimate of the error (under a pointwise double Dini condition). Moreover, under the assumption that $f$ is Dini continuous, we prove that the set of regular points is locally a (parabolic) $C^1$-surface and that the set of singular points is locally contained in a union of (parabolic) $C^1$ manifolds.

The fractional Cheeger problem

Given an open and bounded set $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$, we consider the problem of minimizing the ratio between the $s-$perimeter and the $N-$dimensional Lebesgue measure among subsets of $Ω$. This is the nonlocal version of the well-known Cheeger problem. We prove various properties of optimal sets for this problem, as well as some equivalent formulations. In addition, the limiting behaviour of some nonlinear and nonlocal eigenvalue problems is investigated, in relation with this optimization problem. The presentation is as self-contained as possible.

Optimal Regularity for the parabolic No-Sign Obstacle Problem

We study the parabolic free boundary problem of obstacle type $$ \lap u-\frac{\partial u}{\partial t}= fχ_{u\ne 0}. $$ Under the condition that $f=Hv$ for some function $v$ with bounded second order spatial derivatives and bounded first order time derivative, we establish the same regularity for the solution $u$. Both the regularity and the assumptions are optimal. Using this result and assuming that $f$ is Dini continuous, we prove that the free boundary is, near so called low energy points, a $C^1$ graph. Our result completes the theory for this type of problems for the heat operator.

preprint2011arXiv

Optimal regularity for the no-sign obstacle problem

In this paper we prove the optimal $C^{1,1}(B_\frac12)$-regularity for a general obstacle type problem $$ \lap u = fχ_{\{u\neq 0\}}\textup{in $B_1$}, $$ under the assumption that $f*N$ is $C^{1,1}(B_1)$, where $N$ is the Newtonian potential. This is the weakest assumption for which one can hope to get $C^{1,1}$-regularity. As a by-product of the $C^{1,1}$-regularity we are able to prove that, under a standard thickness assumption on the zero set close to a free boundary point $x^0$, the free boundary is locally a $C^1$-graph close to $x^0$, provided $f$ is Dini. This completely settles the question of the optimal regularity of this problem, that has been under much attention during the last two decades.

Pointwise estimates for the heat equation. Application to the free boundary of the obstacle problem with Dini coefficients

We study the pointwise regularity of solutions to parabolic equations. As a first result, we prove that if the modulus of mean oscillation of $Δu -u_t$ at the origin is Dini (in $L^p$ average), then the origin is a Lebesgue point of continuity (still in $L^p$ average) for $D^2 u$ and $\dd_t u$. We extend this pointwise regularity result to the parabolic obstacle problem with Dini right hand side. In particular, we prove that the solution to the obstacle problem has, at regular points of the free boundary, a Taylor expansion up to order two in space and one in time (in the $L^p$ average). Moreover, we get a quantitative estimate of the error in this Taylor expansion. Our method is based on decay estimates obtained by contradiction, using blow-up arguments and Liouville type theorems. As a by-product of our approach, we deduce that the regular points of the free boundary are locally contained in a $C^1$ hypersurface for the parabolic distance $\sqrt{x^2 +|t|}$.
