Low-field Feshbach resonances and three-body losses in a fermionic quantum gas of $^{161}$Dy

We report on high-resolution Feshbach spectroscopy on a degenerate, spin-polarized Fermi gas of $^{161}$Dy atoms, measuring three-body recombination losses at low magnetic field. For field strength up to 1\,G, we identify as much as 44 resonance features and observe plateaus of very low losses. For four selected typical resonances, we study the dependence of the three-body recombination rate coefficient on the magnetic resonance detuning and on the temperature. We observe a strong suppression of losses with decreasing temperature already for small detunings from resonance. The characterization of complex behavior of three-body losses of fermionic $^{161}$Dy is important for future applications of this peculiar species in research on atomic quantum gases.

Compact, robust, and spectrally pure diode-laser system with a filtered output and a tunable copy for absolute referencing

We report on a design of a compact laser system composed of an extended cavity diode laser with high passive stability and a pre-filter Fabri-Perot cavity. The laser is frequency stabilized relative to the cavity using a serrodyne technique with a correction bandwidth of $\geq 6$ MHz and a dynamic range of $\geq 700$ MHz. The free running laser system has a power spectral density (PSD) $\leq 100$ Hz$^{2}$/Hz centered mainly in the acoustic frequency range. A highly tunable, $0.5-1.3$ GHz copy of the spectrally pure output beam is provided, which can be used for further stabilization of the laser system to an ultra-stable reference. We demonstrate a simple one-channel lock to such a reference that brings down the PSD to the sub-Hz level. The tuning, frequency stabilization and sideband imprinting is achieved by a minimum number of key elements comprising a fibered EOM (electro-optic modulator), AOM (acousto-optic modulator) and a NLTL (non-linear transmission line). The system is easy to operate, scalable, and highly applicable to atomic/molecular experiments demanding high spectral purity, long-term stability, and robustness.

Advanced Cold Molecule Electron EDM

Measurement of a non-zero electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron within a few orders of magnitude of the current best limit of |d_e| < 1.05 e -27 e cm would be an indication of physics beyond the Standard Model. The ACME Collaboration is searching for an electron EDM by performing a precision measurement of electron spin precession in the metastable H state of thorium monoxide (ThO) using a slow, cryogenic beam. We discuss the current status of the experiment. Based on a data set acquired from 14 hours of running time over a period of 2 days, we have achieved a 1-sigma statistical uncertainty of 1 e -28 e cm/T^(1/2), where T is the running time in days.

Interaction-induced quantum phase revivals and evidence for the transition to the quantum chaotic regime in 1D atomic Bloch oscillations

We study atomic Bloch oscillations in an ensemble of one-dimensional tilted superfluids in the Bose-Hubbard regime. For large values of the tilt, we observe interaction-induced coherent decay and matter-wave quantum phase revivals of the Bloch oscillating ensemble. We analyze the revival period dependence on interactions by means of a Feshbach resonance. When reducing the value of the tilt, we observe the disappearance of the quasi-periodic phase revival signature towards an irreversible decay of Bloch oscillations, indicating the transition from regular to quantum chaotic dynamics.

Observation of many-body long-range tunneling after a quantum quench

Quantum tunneling constitutes one of the most fundamental processes in nature. We observe resonantly-enhanced long-range quantum tunneling in one-dimensional Mott-insulating Hubbard chains that are suddenly quenched into a tilted configuration. Higher-order many-body tunneling processes occur over up to five lattice sites when the tilt per site is tuned to integer fractions of the Mott gap. Starting from a one-atom-per-site Mott state the response of the many-body quantum system is observed as resonances in the number of doubly occupied sites and in the emerging coherence in momentum space. Second- and third-order tunneling shows up in the transient response after the tilt, from which we extract the characteristic scaling in accordance with perturbation theory and numerical simulations.

Order of Magnitude Smaller Limit on the Electric Dipole Moment of the Electron

The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics fails to explain dark matter and why matter survived annihilation with antimatter following the Big Bang. Extensions to the SM, such as weak-scale Supersymmetry, may explain one or both of these phenomena by positing the existence of new particles and interactions that are asymmetric under time-reversal (T). These theories nearly always predict a small, yet potentially measurable ($10^{-27}$-$10^{-30}$ $e$ cm) electron electric dipole moment (EDM, $d_e$), which is an asymmetric charge distribution along the spin ($\vec{S}$). The EDM is also asymmetric under T. Using the polar molecule thorium monoxide (ThO), we measure $d_e = (-2.1 \pm 3.7_\mathrm{stat} \pm 2.5_\mathrm{syst})\times 10^{-29}$ $e$ cm. This corresponds to an upper limit of $|d_e| < 8.7\times 10^{-29}$ $e$ cm with 90 percent confidence, an order of magnitude improvement in sensitivity compared to the previous best limits. Our result constrains T-violating physics at the TeV energy scale.

Quantum quench in an atomic one-dimensional Ising chain

We study non-equilibrium dynamics for an ensemble of tilted one-dimensional atomic Bose-Hubbard chains after a sudden quench to the vicinity of the transition point of the Ising paramagnetic to anti-ferromagnetic quantum phase transition. The quench results in coherent oscillations for the orientation of effective Ising spins, detected via oscillations in the number of doubly-occupied lattice sites. We characterize the quench by varying the system parameters. We report significant modification of the tunneling rate induced by interactions and show clear evidence for collective effects in the oscillatory response.

Magnetic and electric dipole moments of the $H\ {}^3Δ_1$ state in ThO

The metastable $H \ {}^3Δ_1$ state in the thorium monoxide (ThO) molecule is highly sensitive to the presence of a CP-violating permanent electric dipole moment of the electron (eEDM). The magnetic dipole moment $μ_H$ and the molecule-fixed electric dipole moment $D_H$ of this state are measured in preparation for a search for the eEDM. The small magnetic moment $μ_H = 8.5(5) \times 10^{-3} \ μ_B$ displays the predicted cancellation of spin and orbital contributions in a ${}^3 Δ_1$ paramagnetic molecular state, providing a significant advantage for the suppression of magnetic field noise and related systematic effects in the eEDM search. In addition, the induced electric dipole moment is shown to be fully saturated in very modest electric fields ($<$ 10 V/cm). This feature is favorable for the suppression of many other potential systematic errors in the ThO eEDM search experiment.
