Linear statistics of the circular $β$-ensemble, Stein's method, and circular Dyson Brownian motion

We study the linear statistics of the circular $β$-ensemble with a Stein's method argument, where the exchangeable pair is generated through circular Dyson Brownian motion. This generalizes previous results obtained in such a way for the CUE and provides a novel approach for studying linear statistics of $β$-ensembles. This approach allows studying simultaneously a collection of linear statistics whose number grows with the dimension of the ensemble. Also this approach requires estimating only low order moments of the linear statistics.

Multiplicative chaos measures for a random model of the Riemann zeta function

We prove convergence of a stochastic approximation of powers of the Riemann $ζ$ function to a non-Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure, and prove that this measure is a non-trivial multifractal random measure. The results cover both the subcritical and critical chaos. A basic ingredient of the proof is a 'good' Gaussian approximation of the induced random fields that is potentially of independent interest.

Towards rigorous analysis of the Levitov-Mirlin-Evers recursion

This paper aims to develop a rigorous asymptotic analysis of an approximate renormalization group recursion for inverse participation ratios $P_q$ of critical powerlaw random band matrices. The recursion goes back to the work by Mirlin and Evers [37] and earlier works by Levitov [32, 33] and is aimed to describe the ensuing multifractality of the eigenvectors of such matrices. We point out both similarities and dissimilarities of LME recursion to those appearing in the theory of multiplicative cascades and branching random walks and show that the methods developed in those fields can be adapted to the present case. In particular the LME recursion is shown to exhibit a phase transition, which we expect is a freezing transition, where the role of temperature is played by the exponent $q$. However, the LME recursion has features that make its rigorous analysis considerably harder and we point out several open problems for further study

A discrete log gas, discrete Toeplitz determinants with Fisher-Hartwig singularities, and Gaussian Multiplicative Chaos

We consider a log-gas on a discretization of the unit circle. We prove that if the gas is not too dense, or the number of particles in the gas is not too large compared to the scale of the discretization, the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial can be described in terms of a Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure. This is done by analyzing discrete Toeplitz determinants with Fisher-Hartwig singularities. In particular, we prove that if the gas is not too dense, the classical Fisher-Hartwig conjecture holds for the discrete Toeplitz determinant as well. Our analysis suggests that if the gas is any denser than this, the formula needs to be modified.

Basic properties of critical lognormal multiplicative chaos

We study one-dimensional exact scaling lognormal multiplicative chaos measures at criticality. Our main results are the determination of the exact asymptotics of the right tail of the distribution of the total mass of the measure, and an almost sure upper bound for the modulus of continuity of the cumulative distribution function of the measure. We also find an almost sure lower bound for the increments of the measure almost everywhere with respect to the measure itself, strong enough to show that the measure is supported on a set of Hausdorff dimension $0$.

Global spectral fluctuations in the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble

We consider global fluctuations of the spectrum of the GUE. Using results on the linear statistics of such matrices as well as variance bounds on the eigenvalues, we show that under a suitable scaling, global fluctuations of the spectrum can be asymptotically described in terms of a logarithmically correlated Gaussian field. We also discuss briefly connections between different objects in RMT giving rise to log-correlated fields: the logarithm of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial, the eigenvalue counting function, and the field of fluctuations of the eigenvalues around their expected locations.

On the logarithm of the characteristic polynomial of the Ginibre ensemble

We prove a slightly sharper version of a result of Rider and Virág who proved that after centering, the logarithm of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial of the Ginibre ensemble converges in law to the Gaussian Free Field on the unit disk with free boundary conditions (and continued harmonically outside of it). Using their results on the linear statistics of the Ginibre ensemble, we prove a result that removes the ambiguity concerning the "constant part" or zero mode of the field.

The characteristic polynomial of a random unitary matrix and Gaussian multiplicative chaos - The $L^2$-phase

We study the characteristic polynomial of Haar distributed random unitary matrices. We show that after a suitable normalization, as one increases the size of the matrix, powers of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial as well as powers of the exponential of its argument converge in law to a Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure for small enough real powers. This establishes a connection between random matrix theory and the theory of Gaussian multiplicative chaos.

Critical Mandelbrot Cascades

We study Mandelbrot's multiplicative cascade measures at the critical temperature. As has been recently shown by Barral, Rhodes and Vargas (arXiv:1203.5445), an appropriately normalized sequence of cascade measures converges weakly in probability to a nontrivial limit measure. We prove that these limit measures have no atoms and give bounds for the modulus of continuity of the cumulative distribution of the measure. Using the earlier work of Barral and Seuret (2007), we compute the multifractal spectrum of the measures. We also extend the result of Benjamini and Schramm (2009), in which the KPZ formula from quantum gravity is validated for the high temperature cascade measures, to the critical and low temperature cases.

Exact asymptotics of the freezing transition of a logarithmically correlated random energy model

We consider a logarithmically correlated random energy model, namely a model for directed polymers on a Cayley tree, which was introduced by Derrida and Spohn. We prove asymptotic properties of a generating function of the partition function of the model by studying a discrete time analogy of the KPP-equation - thus translating Bramson's work on the KPP-equation into a discrete time case. We also discuss connections to extreme value statistics of a branching random walk and a rescaled multiplicative cascade measure beyond the critical point.
