Quark-diquark string tension, excited baryonic resonances and thermal fluctuations

We study the baryonic fluctuations from second to eighth order involving electric charge, baryon number and strangeness below the quark-gluon plasma crossover and numerically known from lattice QCD calculations. By considering a particular realization of the Hadron Resonance Gas model, we provide evidence on the dominant role of quark-diquark degrees of freedom to describe excited baryonic resonances. After proving by means of suitable Polyakov loop correlators that the quark-diquark and the quark-antiquark forces coincide, $V_{\bar q q } (r) = V_{\bar q D } (r) + \textrm{const}$, we find that the corresponding susceptibilities can be saturated with excited baryonic states in a quark-diquark model picture.

The X(3872) as a mass distribution

All existing experimental evidence of the bound state nature of the X(3872) relies on considering its decay products with a finite experimental spectral mass resolution which is typically $Δm \ge 2$ MeV and much larger than its alleged binding energy, $B_X =0.00(18)$MeV. On the other hand, there is a neat cancellation in the $1^{++} $ channel for the invariant $D {\bar D}^*$ mass around the threshold between the continuum and bound state contribution. We discuss the impact of this effect for X(3872) at finite temperature, in prompt production in pp collisions data with a finite $p_T$ or the lineshapes of specific production experiments of exotic states involving triangle singularities

Axial-vector dominance predictions in quasielastic neutrino-nucleus scattering

The axial form factor plays a crucial role in quasielastic neutrino-nucleus scattering, but the error of the theoretical cross section due to uncertainties of $G_A$ remains to be established. Reversely, the extraction of $G_A$ from the neutrino nucleus cross section suffers from large systematic errors due to nuclear model dependencies, while the use of single parameter dipole fits underestimates the errors and prevents an identification of the relevant kinematics for this determination. We propose to use a generalized axial-vector-meson-dominance (AVMD) in conjunction with large-$N_c$ and high energy QCD constrains to model the nucleon axial form factor, as well as the half width rule as an a priori uncertainty estimate. The minimal hadronic ansatz comprises the sum of two monopoles corresponding to the lightest axial-vector mesons being coupled to the axial current. The parameters of the resulting axial form factor are the masses and widths of the two axial mesons as obtained from the averaged PDG values. By applying the half width rule in a Monte Carlo simulation, a distribution of theoretical predictions can then be generated for the neutrino-nucleus quasielastic cross section. We test the model by applying it to the $(ν_μ,μ)$ quasielastic cross section from $^{12}$C for the kinematics of the MiniBooNE experiment. The resulting predictions have no free parameters. We find that the relativistic Fermi gas model globally reproduces the experimental data, giving $χ^2/ \# bins = 0.81$. A $Q^2$-dependent error analysis of the neutrino data shows that the uncertainties in the axial form factor $G_A(Q^2)$ are comparable to the ones induced by the a priori half width rule. We identify the most sensitive region to be in the range $0.2 \lesssim Q^2 \lesssim 0.6 \,{\rm GeV}^2$.

Binding in light nuclei: Statistical NN uncertainties vs Computational accuracy

We analyse the impact of the statistical uncertainties of the the nucleon-nucleon interaction, based on the Granada-2013 np-pp database, on the binding energies of the triton and the alpha particle using a bootstrap method, by solving the Faddeev equations for $^3$H and the Yakubovsky equations for $^4$He respectively. We check that in practice about 30 samples prove enough for a reliable error estimate. An extrapolation of the well fulfilled Tjon-line correlation predicts the experimental binding of the alpha particle within uncertainties.

Fixed points of the SRG evolution and the on-shell limit of the nuclear force

We study the infrared limit of the similarity renormalization group (SRG) using a simple toy model for the nuclear force aiming to investigate the fixed points of the SRG evolution with both the Wilson and the Wegner generators. We show how a fully diagonal interaction at the similarity cutoff $λ\rightarrow 0$ may be obtained from the eigenvalues of the hamiltonian and quantify the diagonalness by means of operator norms. While the fixed points for both generators are equivalent when no bound-states are allowed by the interaction, the differences arising from the presence of the Deuteron bound-state can be disentangled very clearly by analyzing the evolved interactions in the infrared limit $λ\to 0$ on a finite momentum grid. Another issue we investigate is the location on the diagonal of the hamiltonian in momentum-space where the SRG evolution places the Deuteron bound-state eigenvalue once it reaches the fixed point. This finite momentum grid setup provides an alternative derivation of the celebrated trace identities, as a by product. The different effects due to either the Wilson or the Wegner generators on the binding energies of $A=2,3,4$ systems are investigated and related to the ocurrence of a Tjon-line which emerges as the minimum of an avoided crossing between $E_α= 4 E_t - 3 E_d$ and $E_α= 2 E_t $. All infrared features of the flow equations are illustrated using the toy model for the two-nucleon $S$-waves.

Heavy quark-antiquark free energy and thermodynamics of string-hadron avoided crossings

The correlation function between two Polyakov loops encodes the free-energy shift due to a pair of separated colour conjugated sources in the hot QCD medium. This is analyzed in terms of a novel Källén-Lehmann spectral representation for the separating distance, implying an increasing and concave free-energy at all temperatures. We express the heavy $\bar{Q} Q$ free-energy shift below the phase transition in QCD in terms of colour neutral purely hadronic states with no explicit reference to quarks and gluons. Good agreement with lattice data is achieved when considering the avoided crossing mechanism underlying string breaking and with standard quenched values of the string tension known from charmonium and bottomonium phenomenology. We also address the role of the corresponding entropy shift and its renormalization group properties.

The Low energy structure of the Nucleon-Nucleon interaction: Statistical vs Systematic Uncertainties

We analyze the low energy NN interaction by confronting statistical vs systematic uncertainties. This is carried out with the help of model potentials fitted to the Granada-2013 database where a statistically meaningful partial wave analysis comprising a total of $6713$ np and pp published scattering data from 1950 till 2013 below $350 {\rm MeV}$ has been made. We extract threshold parameters uncertainties from the coupled channel effective range expansion up to $j \le 5$. We find that for threshold parameters systematic uncertainties are generally at least an order of magnitude larger than statistical uncertainties. Similar results are found for np phase-shifts and amplitude parameters.

Three pion nucleon coupling constants

There exist four pion nucleon coupling constants, $f_{π^0, pp}$, $-f_{π^0, nn}$, $f_{π^+, pn} /\sqrt{2}$ and $ f_{π^-, np} /\sqrt{2}$ which coincide when up and down quark masses are identical and the electron charge is zero. While there is no reason why the pion-nucleon-nucleon coupling constants should be identical in the real world, one expects that the small differences might be pinned down from a sufficiently large number of independent and mutually consistent data. Our discussion provides a rationale for our recent determination $$f_p^2 = 0.0759(4) \, , \quad f_{0}^2 = 0.079(1) \,, \quad f_{c}^2 = 0.0763(6) \, , $$ based on a partial wave analysis of the $3σ$ self-consistent nucleon-nucleon Granada-2013 database comprising 6713 published data in the period 1950-2013.

Uncertainty quantification of effective nuclear interactions

We give a brief review on the development of phenomenological NN interactions and the corresponding quantification of statistical uncertainties. We look into the uncertainty of effective interactions broadly used in mean field calculations through the Skyrme parameters and effective field theory counter-terms by estimating both statistical and systematic uncertainties stemming from the NN interaction. We also comment on the role played by different fitting strategies on the light of recent developments.

Heavy baryons in the large Nc limit

It is shown that in the large Nc limit heavy baryon masses can be estimated quantitatively in a 1/Nc expansion using the Hartree approximation. The results are compared with available lattice calculations for different values of the ratio between the square root of the string tension and the heavy quark mass tension independent of Nc. Using a potential adjusted to agree with the one obtained in lattice QCD, a variational analysis of the ground state spin averaged baryon mass is performed using Gaussian Hartree wave functions. Relativistic corrections through the quark kinetic energy are included. The results provide good estimates for the first sub-leading in 1/Nc corrections.

Large-$N_c$ naturalness in coupled-channel meson-meson scattering

The analysis of hadronic interactions with effective field theory techniques is complicated by the appearance of a large number of low-energy constants, which are usually fitted to data. On the other hand, the large-$N_c$ limit imposes natural short-distance constraints on these low-energy constants, providing a parameter reduction. A Bayesian interpretation of the expected $1/N_c$ accuracy allows for an easy and efficient implementation of these constraints, using an augmented $χ^2$. We apply this approach to the analysis of meson-meson scattering, in conjunction with chiral perturbation theory to one loop and coupled-channel unitarity, and show that it helps to largely reduce the many existing ambiguities and simultaneously provide an acceptable description of the available phase shifts.

Low energy chiral two pion exchange potential with statistical uncertainties

We present a new phenomenological Nucleon-Nucleon chiral potential fitted to 925 pp and 1743 np scattering data selected from the Granada-2013 NN-database up to a laboratory energy of $125$ MeV with 20 short distance parameters and three chiral constants $c_1$, $c_3$ and $c_4$ with $χ^2/ν= 1.02$. Special attention is given to testing the normality of the residuals which allows for a sound propagation of statistical errors from the experimental data to the potential parameters, phase-shifts, scattering amplitudes and counter-terms. This fit allows for a new determination of the chiral constants $c_1$, $c_3$ and $c_4$ compatible with previous determinations from NN data. This new interactions is found to be softer than other high quality potentials by undertaking a Weinberg eigenvalue analysis. We further explore the interplay between the error analysis and the assumed form of the short distance interaction. The present work shows that it is possible to fit NN scattering with a TPE chiral potential fulfilling all necessary statistical requirements up to 125 MeV and shows unequivocal non-vanishing D-wave short distance pieces.

Minimally non-local nucleon-nucleon potentials with chiral two-pion exchange including $Δ$'s

We construct a coordinate-space chiral potential, including $Δ$-isobar intermediate states in its two-pion-exchange component. The contact interactions entering at next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-next-to-leading orders ($Q^2$ and $Q^4$, respectively, $Q$ denoting generically the low momentum scale) are rearranged by Fierz transformations to yield terms at most quadratic in the relative momentum operator of the two nucleons. The low-energy constants multiplying these contact interactions are fitted to the 2013 Granada database, consisting of 2309 $pp$ and 2982 $np$ data (including, respectively, 148 and 218 normalizations) in the laboratory-energy range 0--300 MeV. For the total 5291 $pp$ and $np$ data in this range, we obtain a $χ^2$/datum of roughly 1.3 for a set of three models characterized by long- and short-range cutoffs, $R_{\rm L}$ and $R_{\rm S}$ respectively, ranging from $(R_{\rm L},R_{\rm S})=(1.2,0.8)$ fm down to $(0.8,0.6)$ fm. The long-range (short-range) cutoff regularizes the one- and two-pion exchange (contact) part of the potential.

Scaling violation and relativistic effective mass from quasielastic electron scattering: implications for neutrino reactions

The experimental data from quasielastic electron scattering from $^{12}$C are reanalyzed in terms of a new scaling variable suggested by the interacting relativistic Fermi gas with scalar and vector interactions, which is known to generate a relativistic effective mass for the interacting nucleons. By choosing a mean value of this relativistic effective mass $m_N^* =0.8 m_N$, we observe that most of the data fall inside a region around the inverse parabola-shaped universal scaling function of the relativistic Fermi gas. This suggests a method to select the subset of data that highlight the quasielastic region, about two thirds of the total 2,500 data. Regardless of the momentum and energy transfer, this method automatically excludes the data that are not dominated by the quasielastic process. The resulting band of data reflects deviations from the perfect universality, and can be used to characterize experimentally the quasielastic peak, despite the manifest scaling violation. Moreover we show that the spread of the data around the scaling function can be interpreted as genuine fluctuations of the effective mass $M^* \equiv m^*_N/m_N \sim 0.8 \pm 0.1$. Applying the same procedure we transport the scaling quasielastic band into a theoretical prediction band for neutrino scattering cross section that is compatible with the recent measurements and slightly more accurate.

Self-consistent statistical error analysis of $ππ$ scattering

We analyze the conditions under which a statistical error analysis can be carried out in the case of $ππ$ scattering, namely the normality of residuals in the conventional $χ^2$-fit method. Here we check that the current and benchmarking analyses only present very small violations of the normality requirements. In particular, we show how it is possible to amend slightly the selection of the experimental data, and improve the normality of residuals. As an example, we discuss the $0^{++}$ channel and the implications for the $f_0(500)$ and $f_0(980)$ resonances, obtaining that the new selection of data provides very similar and compatible results. In addition, the effect on the $f_0(500)$ and $f_0(980)$ resonance pole parameters is almost negligible, which reinforces the central results and the uncertainty analysis performed in these benchmarking determinations.

Statistical error propagation in ab initio no-core full configuration calculations of light nuclei

We propagate the statistical uncertainty of experimental NN scattering data into the binding energy of $^3$H and $^4$He. We also study the sensitivity of the magnetic moment and proton radius of the $^3$H to changes in the NN interaction. The calculations are made with the no-core full configuration method in a sufficiently large harmonic oscillator basis. For those light nuclei we obtain $ΔE$($^3$H) = 0.015 MeV and $ΔE$($^4$He) = 0.055 MeV.

Bootstrapping the statistical uncertainties of NN scattering data

We use the Monte Carlo bootstrap as a method to simulate pp and np scattering data below pion production threshold from an initial set of over 6700 experimental mutually $3σ$ consistent data. We compare the results of the bootstrap, with 1020 statistically generated samples of the full database, with the standard covariance matrix method of error propagation. No significant differences in scattering observables and phase shifts are found. This suggests alternative strategies for propagating errors of nuclear forces in nuclear structure calculations.

Coarse grained NN potential with Chiral Two Pion Exchange

We determine the chiral constants of the Nucleon-Nucleon Two Pion Exchange potential deduced from Chiral Perturbation Theory. By using a coarse grained representation of the short distance interactions with 30 parameters, the Partial Wave Analysis fit gives chi^2/dof = 1.1 to a mutually consistent set of 6713 data previously built from all published proton-proton and neutron proton scattering data from 1950 till 2013 with LAB energy below 350 MeV. We obtain (c1, c3, c4)=(-0.41+- 1.08,-4.66+- 0.60, 4.31+- 0.17)/GeV with an almost 100% anti-correlation between c1 and c3. We also provide the errors in the short distance parameters and propagate them to the deuteron properties and low partial waves phase shifts.

Error analysis of nuclear forces and effective interactions

The Nucleon-Nucleon interaction is the starting point for ab initio Nuclear Structure and Nuclear reactions calculations. Those are effectively carried out via effective interactions fitting scattering data up to a maximal center of mass momentum. However, NN interactions are subjected to statistical and systematic uncertainties which are expected to propagate and have some impact on the predictive power and accuracy of theoretical calculations, regardless on the numerical accuracy of the method used to solve the many body problem. We stress the necessary conditions required for a correct and self-consistent statistical interpretation of the discrepancies between theory and experiment which enable a subsequent statistical error propagation and correlation analysis. We comprehensively discuss an stringent and recently proposed tail-sensitive normality test and provide a simple recipe to implement it. As an application, we analyze the deduced uncertainties and correlations of effective interactions in terms of Moshinsky-Skyrme parameters and effective field theory counterterms as derived from the bare NN potential containing One-Pion-Exchange and Chiral Two-Pion-Exchange interactions inferred from scattering data.

Fixed points of the Similarity Renormalization Group and the Nuclear Many-Body Problem

The Similarity Renormalization Group reduces the off-shellness by driving the evolved interaction towards a diagonal band. We analyze the infrared limit and the corresponding on-shell interactions and its consequences for light nuclei. Using a harmonic oscillator shell model we obtain a Tjon line B(4He)= 4B(3H)-3B(2H) which can be understood from a combinatorics counting of nucleon pairs and triplets in the triton and alpha-particle and compares favorably with realistic calculations.

Statistical Error analysis of Nucleon-Nucleon phenomenological potentials

Nucleon-Nucleon potentials are commonplace in nuclear physics and are determined from a finite number of experimental data with limited precision sampling the scattering process. We study the statistical assumptions implicit in the standard least squares fitting procedure and apply, along with more conventional tests, a tail sensitive quantile-quantile test as a simple and confident tool to verify the normality of residuals. We show that the fulfilment of normality tests is linked to a judicious and consistent selection of a nucleon-nucleon database. These considerations prove crucial to a proper statistical error analysis and uncertainty propagation. We illustrate these issues by analyzing about 8000 proton-proton and neutron-proton scattering published data. This enables the construction of potentials meeting all statistical requirements necessary for statistical uncertainty estimates in nuclear structure calculations.

The infrared limit of the Similarity Renormalization Group evolution and Levinson's theorem

On a finite momentum grid with N integration points and weights the Similarity Renormalization Group (SRG) with a given generator G unitarily evolves an initial interaction with a cutoff on energy differences. This steadily drives the starting Hamiltonian in momentum space to a diagonal form in the infrared limit corresponding to a permutation of the eigenvalues and depends on G. Levinson's theorem establishes a relation between phase-shifts and the number of bound-states. We show that unitarily equivalent Hamiltonians on the grid generate reaction matrices which are compatible with Levinson's theorem but are phase-inequivalent along the SRG trajectory. An isospectral definition of the phase-shift in terms of an energy-shift is possible but requires in addition a proper ordering of states on a momentum grid in order to fulfill Levinson's theorem. We show how the SRG with different generators G induces different isospectral flows in the presence of bound-states, leading to distinct orderings in the infrared limit. While the Wilson generator induces an ascending ordering incompatible with Levinson's theorem, the Wegner generator provides a much better ordering, although not the optimal one. We illustrate the discussion with the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction in the 1S0 and 3S1 channels.

The Polyakov loop in various representations in the confined phase of QCD

We analyze the expectation value of the Polyakov loop in the fundamental and higher representations in the confined phase of QCD. We discuss a hadronic like representation, and find that the Polyakov loop corresponds to a partition function in the presence of a colored source, explaining its real and positive character. Saturating the sum rules to intermediate temperatures requires a large number of multipartonic excited states. By using constituent or bag models, we find detailed low temperature scaling rules which depart from the Casimir scaling and could be tested by lattice calculations.

Triton binding energy with realistic precision

We compute the binding energy of triton with realistic statistical errors stemming from NN scattering data uncertainties and the deuteron and obtain $E_t=-7.638(15) \, {\rm MeV}$. Setting the numerical precision as $ΔE_t^{\rm num} \lesssim 1 \, {\rm keV}$ we obtain the statistical error $ΔE_t^{\rm stat}= 15(1) \, {\rm keV}$ which is mainly determined by the channels involving relative S-waves. This figure reflects the uncertainty of the input NN data, more than two orders of magnitude larger than the experimental precision $ΔE_t^{\rm exp}= 0.1 \, {\rm keV}$ and provides a bottleneck in the realistic precision that can be reached. This suggests an important reduction in the numerical precision and hence in the computational effort.

Constituent Quarks and Gluons, Polyakov loop and the Hadron Resonance Gas Model

Implicit vs Explicit Renormalization and Effective Interactions

Effective interactions can be obtained from a renormalization group analysis in two complementary ways. One can either explicitly integrate out higher energy modes or impose given conditions at low energies for a cut-off theory. While the first method is numerically involved, the second one can be solved almost analytically. In both cases we compare the out coming effective interactions for the two nucleon system as functions of the cut-off scale and find a strikingly wide energy region where both approaches overlap, corresponding to relevant scales in light nuclei about 200MeV. This amounts to a great simplification in the determination of the effective interaction parameters.

Nuclear Symmetries of the similarity renormalization group for nuclear forces

We review the role played by long-distance symmetries within the context of the similarity renormalization group approach. This is based on phase-shift-preserving continuous unitary transformations that evolve Hamiltonians with a cutoff on energy differences. We find that there is a similarity cutoff of 3/fm for which almost perfect fulfillment of Wigner SU(4) symmetry is found at the two body level. This suggests to look for similar symmetry patterns for three- and four-body forces. We also analyze the impact of potentials based on Chiral Perturbation Theory in Nuclear Structure calculations.

Nucleon-Nucleon Chiral Two Pion Exchange potential vs Coarse grained interactions

We analyse the interplay between nucleon-nucleon potentials deduced from chiral perturbation theory and a coarse grained representation of the short distance interactions by delta-shells potentials below a certain cut-off distance. While we find that the number of parameters is greatly reduced when Chiral Two Pion Exchange contributions are included we also observe that discerning the necessity of improvements on the interaction requires a detailed analysis of all error sources. Our points are best illustrated by computing deuteron static properties as well as electromagnetic form factors after error propagation.

Error estimates on Nuclear Binding Energies from Nucleon-Nucleon uncertainties

Despite great theoretical efforts the NN interaction can only be determined with a finite precision, implying an error upper bound for nuclear masses. We analyze for the first time the problem of estimating the systematic errors related to the form of the potential and their impact on nuclear binding. To this end we exploit the concept of coarse grained interactions to typical nuclear wavelengths. Our estimate gives an error of 0.1-0.4 MeV for the binding energy per particle and paves the way for ab initio calculations tailored to such a precision.

Nuclear Binding Energies and NN uncertainties

There is an increasing interest in quantifying the predictive power in nuclear structure calculations. We discuss how both experimental and systematic errors at the NN-level can be used to estimate the theoretical uncertainties by rather simple means and without solving the full nuclear many body problem. We emphasize the role of effective interactions defined by coarse graining the NN potential to length scales of the order of the minimal de Broglie wavelength probed between nucleons in nuclei. We find an a priori error of \DeltaB/A \sim 0.1 - 0.4MeV for the binding energy per particle throughout the periodic table for 2 \leq A \leq 208, and a linear growth of the error with density for nuclear matter \DeltaB/A \sim 3.75ρn.m. and neutron matter \DeltaB/N \sim 3.5ρn.. This suggests to limit the computational effort in solving the Nuclear Many Body Problem to such an accuracy.

The Polyakov loop and the hadron resonance gas model

The Polyakov loop has been used repeatedly as an order parameter in the deconfinement phase transition in QCD. We argue that, in the confined phase, its expectation value can be represented in terms of hadronic states, similarly to the hadron resonance gas model for the pressure. Specifically, L(T) \approx 1/2\sum_αg_α\,e^(-Δ_α/T), where g_αare the degeneracies and Δ_αare the masses of hadrons with exactly one heavy quark (the mass of the heavy quark itself being subtracted). We show that this approximate sum rule gives a fair description of available lattice data with N_f=2+1 for temperatures in the range 150MeV<T<190MeV with conventional meson and baryon states from two different models. For temperatures below 150MeV different lattice results disagree. One set of data can be described if exotic hadrons are present in the QCD spectrum while other sets do not require such states.

Large-Nc Properties of the rho and f0(600) Mesons from Unitary Resonance Chiral Dynamics

We construct pi-pi amplitudes that fulfill exact elastic unitarity, account for one loop Chiral Perturbation Theory contributions and include all 1/Nc leading terms, with the only limitation of considering just the lowest-lying nonet of exchanged resonances. Within such scheme, the Nc dependence of sigma and rho masses and widths is discussed. Robust conclusions are drawn in the case of the rho resonance, confirming that it is a stable meson in the limit of a large number of QCD colors, Nc. Less definitive conclusions are reached in the scalar-isoscalar sector. With the present quality of data, we cannot firmly conclude whether or not the Nc=3 f0(600) resonance completely disappears at large Nc or it has a sub-dominant component in its structure, which would become dominant for a number of quark colors sufficiently large.

Renormalization approach to constituent quark models of Quarkonium

Constituent quark models, while successful, require a great deal of fine tuning of the short distance interactions by introducing phenomenological gluonic form factors which are ultimately designed to accurately reproduce the spectrum. We apply and develop renormalization ideas to reduce the short distance sensitivity and show that, as naively expected, but not explicitly implemented in the models, the physics of binding is entirely linked to the string tension whereas leptonic decays depend more on the gluon exchange potential. We also show how the spectrum of S- and D- $1^{--}$ states is successfully intertwined through the singular tensor interaction.

Renormalization of chiral two pion exchange NN interactions with delta excitations: correlations in the partial wave expansion

In this work we consider the renormalization of the chiral two-pion exchange potential with explicit delta-excitations for nucleon-nucleon scattering at next-to-leading (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading order (N2LO). Due to the singular nature of the chiral potentials, correlations between different partial waves are generated. In particular we show that two-body scattering by a short distance power like singular attractive interaction can be renormalized in all partial waves with a single counterterm, provided the singularities are identical. A parallel statement holds in the presence of tensor interactions when the eigenpotentials in the coupled channel problem also coincide. While this construction reduces the total number of counterterms to eleven in the case of nucleon-nucleon scattering with chiral two-pion exchange interactions with delta degrees of freedom, the differences in the scattering phases as compared to the case with the uncorrelated partial wave renormalization become smaller as the angular momentum is increased in the elastic scattering region.

Couplings in coupled channels versus wave functions: application to the X(3872) resonance

We perform an analytical study of the scattering matrix and bound states in problems with many physical coupled channels. We establish the relationship of the couplings of the states to the different channels, obtained from the residues of the scattering matrix at the poles, with the wave functions for the different channels. The couplings basically reflect the value of the wave functions around the origin in coordinate space. In the concrete case of the X(3872) resonance, understood as a bound state of $\ddn$ and $\ddc$ (and $c.c.$), with the $\ddn$ loosely bound, we find that the couplings to the two channels are essentially equal leading to a state of good isospin I=0 character. This is in spite of having a probability for finding the $\ddn$ state much larger than for $\ddc$ since the loosely bound channel extends further in space. The analytical results, obtained with exact solutions of the Schrödinger equation for the wave functions, can be useful in general to interpret results found numerically in the study of problems with unitary coupled channels methods.

Effective interactions and long distance symmetries in the Nucleon-Nucleon system

Effective interactions, when defined in a coarse grained sense, such as Vlowk at the scale 450 MeV, display a remarkable symmetry pattern. Serber symmetry works with high accuracy for spin triplet states. Wigner SU(4) spin-isospin symmetry with nucleons in the fundamental representation works only for even partial waves exactly as predicted by large Nc limit of QCD with accuracy O(1/Nc^2). This suggests tailoring the very definition of effective interactions to provide a best possible fulfillment of long distance symmetries. With the Vlowk definition Wigner symmetry requires that chiral potentials have low cut-offs (450 MeV). Perturbative saturation of heavy mesonic resonances does not faithfully display the Serber symmetry pattern.

Isospin breaking effects in the dynamical generation of the X(3872)

We have studied isospin breaking effects in the X(3872) resonance and found a natural explanation for the branching fraction of the X decaying to $J/ψ$ with two and three pions being close to unit. Within our framework the X(3872) is a dynamically generated resonance in coupled channels. We also study the relationship between the couplings of the resonance to the coupled channels with its wave function, which further helps us to understand the isospin structure of the resonance.

Low scale saturation of Effective NN Interactions and their Symmetries

The Skyrme force parameters can be uniquely determined by coarse graining the NN interactions at a characteristic momentum scale. We show how exact Vlowk potentials to second order in momenta are accurately and universally saturated with physical NN scattering threshold parameters at CM momentum scales of about Lambda=250 MeV for the S-waves and Lambda=100 MeV for the P-waves. The pattern of Wigner and Serber symmetries unveiled previously is also saturated at these scales.

Nucleon-Nucleon interaction, charge symmetry breaking and renormalization

We study the interplay between charge symmetry breaking and renormalization in the NN system for s-waves. We find a set of universality relations which disentangle explicitly the known long distance dynamics from low energy parameters and extend them to the Coulomb case. We analyze within such an approach the One-Boson-Exchange potential and the theoretical conditions which allow to relate the proton-neutron, proton-proton and neutron-neutron scattering observables without the introduction of extra new parameters and providing good phenomenological success.

Renormalization of One Meson Exchange Potentials and Their Currents

The Nucleon-Nucleon One Meson Exchange Potential, its wave functions and related Meson Exchange Currents are analyzed for point-like nucleons. The leading Nc contributions generate a local and energy independent potential which presents 1/r^3 singularities, requiring renormalization. We show how invoking suitable boundary conditions, neutron-proton phase shifts and deuteron properties become largely insensitive to the nucleon substructure and to the vector mesons. Actually, reasonable agreement with low energy data for realistic values of the coupling constants (e.g. SU(3) values) is found. The analysis along similar lines for the Meson Exchange Currents suggests that this renormalization scheme implies tremendous simplifications while complying with exact gauge invariance at any stage of the calculation.

Renormalization of the leading-order chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction and bulk properties of nuclear matter

We renormalize the two-nucleon interaction at leading order (LO) in chiral perturbation theory using the scheme proposed by Nogga, Timmermans, and van Kolck--also known as modified Weinberg counting. With this interaction, we calculate the energy per nucleon of symmetric nuclear matter in the Brueckner pair approximation and obtain a converged, cutoff-independent result that shows saturation, but also substantial underbinding. We find that the renormalized LO interaction is characterized by an extraordinarily strong tensor force (from one-pion exchange), which is the major cause for the lack of binding. The huge tensor force also leads to the unusually large wound integral of 40% in nuclear matter, which implies a very slow convergence of the hole-line or coupled-cluster expansion, rendering this interaction impractical for many-body calculations. In view of the unusual properties of the renormalized LO interaction and in view of the poor convergence of the nuclear many-body problem with this interaction, there is doubt if this interaction and its predictions can serve as a reasonable and efficient starting point that is improved by perturbative corrections.

Van der Waals forces and Photon-less Effective Field Theories

In the ultra-cold regime Van der Waals forces between neutral atoms can be represented by short range effective interactions. We show that universal low energy scaling features of the underlying vdW long range force stemming from two photon exchange impose restrictions on an Effective Field Theory without explicit photons. The role of naively redundant operators, relevant to the definition of three body forces, is also analyzed.

Correlations between perturbation theory and power corrections in QCD at zero and finite temperature

The duality between QCD perturbative series and power corrections recently conjectured by Narison and Zakharov is analyzed. We propose to study correlations between both contributions as diagnostics tool. A very strong correlation between perturbative and non perturbative contributions is observed for several observables at zero and at finite temperature supporting the validity of the dual description.

Low energy universality and scaling of Van der Waals forces

At long distances interactions between neutral ground state atoms can be described by the Van der Waals potential V(r) =-C6/r^6-C8/r^8 - ... . In the ultra-cold regime atom-atom scattering is dominated by s-waves phase shifts given by an effective range expansion p cot d0 (p) = -1/a0 + r0 p^2/2 + ... in terms of the scattering length a0 and the effective range r0. We show that while for these potentials the scattering length cannot be predicted, the effective range is given by the universal low energy theorem r0 = A + B/a0+ C/a0^2 where A,B and C depend on the dispersion coefficients Cn and the reduced di-atom mass. We confront this formula to about a hundred determinations of r0 and a0 and show why the result is dominated by the leading dispersion coefficient C6. Universality and scaling extends much beyond naive dimensional analysis estimates.

Renormalization and Universality of Van der Waals forces

Renormalization ideas can profitably be exploited in conjunction with the superposition principle of boundary conditions in the description of model independent and universal scaling features of the singular and long range Van der Waals force between neutral atoms. The dominance of the leading power law is highlighted both in the scattering as well as in the bound state problem. The role of off-shell two-body unitarity and causality within the Effective Field Theory framework on the light of universality and scaling at low energies is analyzed.

Renormalization of the Off-shell chiral two-pion exchange NN interactions

The renormalization, finiteness and off-shellness of short distance power like singular interactions is discussed. We show analytically that the renormalizability of the off-shell scattering amplitude relies completely on the corresponding on-shell amplitude without proliferation of new counterterms. We illustrate the result by complementary calculations both in coordinate as well as in momentum space in the simplest 1S0 channel for chiral np interactions including Two Pion Exchange.

Renormalization vs Strong Form Factors for One Boson Exchange Potentials

We analyze the One Boson Exchange Potential from the point of view of Renormalization theory. We show that the nucleon-meson Lagrangean while predicting the NN force does not predict the NN scattering matrix nor the deuteron properties unambiguously due to the appearance of short distance singularities. While the problem has traditionally been circumvented by introducing vertex functions via phenomenological strong form factors, we propose to impose physical renormalization conditions on the scattering amplitude at low energies. Working in the large Nc approximation with pi,sigma, rho and omega mesons, we show that, once these conditions are applied, results for low energy phases of proton-neutron scattering as well as deuteron properties become largely insensitive to the form factors and to the vector mesons and yield a reasonable agreement with the data, for realistic values of the coupling constants.

Scalar meson mass from renormalized One Boson Exchange Potential

We determine the mass and strength of the scalar meson from NN scattering data by renormalizing the One Boson Exchange Potential. This procedure provides a great insensitivity to the unknown short distance interaction making the vector mesons marginally important and allowing for SU(3) couplings in the 1S0 channel. The scalar meson parameters are tightly constrained by low energy np. We discuss whether this scalar should be compared to the recent findings based on the Roy equations analysis of pipi scattering.

Trace Anomaly and dimension two gluon condensate above the phase transition

The dimension two gluon condensate has been used previously within a simple phenomenological model to describe power corrections from available lattice data for the renormalized Polyakov loop and the heavy quark-antiquark free energy in the deconfined phase of QCD (hep-ph/0505215,hep-ph/0702055). The QCD trace anomaly of gluodynamics also shows unequivocal inverse temperature power corrections which may be encoded as dimension two gluon condensate. We analyze lattice data of the trace anomaly and compare with other determinations of the condensate from previous references, yielding roughly similar numerical values.

Renormalization of NN Interaction with Chiral Two Pion Exchange Potential. Non-Central Phases

We extend the renormalization of the NN interaction with Chiral Two Pion Exchange Potential to the calculation of non-central partial wave phase shifts with total angular momentum j<=5 . The short distance singularity structure of the potential as well as the requirement of orthogonality conditions on the wave functions determines exactly the number of undetermined parameters after renormalization.

Meson-Baryon Interactions in Unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory

Meson-Baryon Interactions can be successfully described using both Chiral Symmetry and Unitarity. The $s-$wave meson-baryon scattering amplitude is analyzed in a Bethe-Salpeter coupled channel formalism incorporating Chiral Symmetry in the potential. Two body coupled channel unitarity is exactly preserved. The needed two particle irreducible matrix amplitude is taken from lowest order Chiral Perturbation Theory in a relativistic formalism. Off-shell behavior is parameterized in terms of low energy constants. The relation to the heavy baryon limit is discussed. The position of the complex poles in the second Riemann sheet of the scattering amplitude determine masses and widths baryonic resonances of the N(1535), N(1670), $Λ(1405)$ and $Λ(1670)$ resonances which compare well with accepted numbers.

S=--1 Meson-Baryon Scattering in Coupled Channel Unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory

The $s-$wave meson-baryon scattering amplitude is analyzed for the strangeness $S=-1$ and isospin I=0 sector in a Bethe-Salpeter coupled channel formalism incorporating Chiral Symmetry. Four two-body channels have been considered: $\bar K N$, $πΣ$, $ηΛ$, $ K Ξ$. The needed two particle irreducible matrix amplitude is taken from lowest order Chiral Perturbation Theory in a relativistic formalism. Off-shell behaviour is parameterized in terms of low energy constants, which outnumber those assumed in previous works and provide a better fit to the data. The position of the complex poles in the second Riemann sheet of the scattering amplitude determine masses and widths of the $Λ(1405)$ and $Λ(1670)$ resonances which compare well with accepted numbers.

Parton Distributions Functions of Pion, Kaon and Eta pseudoscalar mesons in the NJL model

Parton distributions of pseudoscalar pi,K and eta mesons obtained within the NJL model using the Pauli-Villars regularization method are analyzed in terms of LO and NLO evolution, and the valence sea quark and gluon parton distributions for the pion are obtained at Q^2 = 4 GeV^2 and compared to existing parametrizations at that scale. Surprisingly, the NLO order effects turn out to be small compared to the LO ones. The valence distributions are in good agreement with experimental analyses, but the gluon and sea distributions come out to be softer in the high-x region and harder in the low-x region than the experimental analyses suggest.

Error estimates for pi-pi scattering threshold parameters in Chiral Perturbation Theory to two loops

Using the analysis of ChPT to two loops, we perform an error analysis of the threshold and low energy parameters, based on the uncertainties for the one loop low energy parameters and the resonance saturation mechanism. Different sets of one loop low energy constants have been considered. Thus, the predictive power of the effective field theory is quantified on the basis of the present experimental uncertainties.
