CHEOPS observations of the HD 108236 planetary system: A fifth planet, improved ephemerides, and planetary radii

The detection of a super-Earth and three mini-Neptunes transiting the bright ($V$ = 9.2 mag) star HD 108236 (also known as TOI-1233) was recently reported on the basis of TESS and ground-based light curves. We perform a first characterisation of the HD 108236 planetary system through high-precision CHEOPS photometry and improve the transit ephemerides and system parameters. We characterise the host star through spectroscopic analysis and derive the radius with the infrared flux method. We constrain the stellar mass and age by combining the results obtained from two sets of stellar evolutionary tracks. We analyse the available TESS light curves and one CHEOPS transit light curve for each known planet in the system. We find that HD 108236 is a Sun-like star with $R_{\star}=0.877\pm0.008 R_{\odot}$, $M_{\star}=0.869^{+0.050}_{-0.048} M_{\odot}$, and an age of $6.7_{-5.1}^{+4.0}$ Gyr. We report the serendipitous detection of an additional planet, HD 108236 f, in one of the CHEOPS light curves. For this planet, the combined analysis of the TESS and CHEOPS light curves leads to a tentative orbital period of about 29.5 days. From the light curve analysis, we obtain radii of $1.615\pm0.051$, $2.071\pm0.052$, $2.539_{-0.065}^{+0.062}$, $3.083\pm0.052$, and $2.017_{-0.057}^{+0.052}$ $R_{\oplus}$ for planets HD 108236 b to HD 108236 f, respectively. These values are in agreement with previous TESS-based estimates, but with an improved precision of about a factor of two. We perform a stability analysis of the system, concluding that the planetary orbits most likely have eccentricities smaller than 0.1. We also employ a planetary atmospheric evolution framework to constrain the masses of the five planets, concluding that HD 108236 b and HD 108236 c should have an Earth-like density, while the outer planets should host a low mean molecular weight envelope.

First demonstration of OH suppression in a high efficiency near-infrared spectrograph

Ground-based near-infrared astronomy is severely hampered by the forest of atmospheric emission lines resulting from the rovibrational decay of OH molecules in the upper atmosphere. The extreme brightness of these lines, as well as their spatial and temporal variability, makes accurate sky subtraction difficult. Selectively filtering these lines with OH suppression instruments has been a long standing goal for near-infrared spectroscopy. We have shown previously the efficacy of fibre Bragg gratings combined with photonic lanterns for achieving OH suppression. Here we report on PRAXIS, a unique near-infrared spectrograph that is optimised for OH suppression with fibre Bragg gratings. We show for the first time that OH suppression (of any kind) is possible with high overall throughput (18 per cent end-to-end), and provide examples of the relative benefits of OH suppression.

Present Status of Single Pion Production in Neutrino-Nucleus Reactions

Some of the recent progress in the physics of pion production induced by neutrinos on nucleons and nuclei is reviewed from a theoretical perspective. The importance of Watson's theorem to reconcile ANL and BNL data with the off-diagonal Goldberger-Treiman relation for the $Δ(1232)$ is discussed. The disagreement between MiniBooNE data and theoretical calculations is presented in the light of the new MINERvA data. The coherent pion production data on $^{12}$C obtained by MINERvA are also compared to different microscopic and PCAC models.

$B_s$ mesons: semileptonic and nonleptonic decays

In this contribution we compute some nonleptonic and semileptonic decay widths of $B_s$ mesons, working in the context of constituent quark models \cite{Albertus:2014gba, Albertus:2014bfa}. For the case of semileptonic decays we consider reactions leading to kaons or different $J^π$ $D_s$ mesons. The study of nonleptonic decays has been done in the factorisation approximation and includes the final states enclosed in Table 2.

Constituent quark model description of charmonium phenomenology

We review how quark models are able to describe the phenomenology of the charm meson sector. The spectroscopy and decays of charmonium and open charm mesons are described in a particular quark model and compared with the data and the results of other existing models in the literature. A quite reasonable global description of the heavy meson spectra is reached. A new assignment of the $ψ(4415)$ resonance as a 3D state leaving aside the 4S state to the X(4360) is tested through the analysis of the resonance structure in $e^{+}e^{-}$ exclusive reactions around the $ψ(4415)$ energy region. We make tentative assignments of some of the $XYZ$ mesons. To elucidate the structure of the $1^{+}$ $c\bar{s}$ states, i.e. $D_{s1}(2460)$ and $D_{s1}(2536)$, we study the strong decay properties of the $D_{s1}(2536)$ meson. We also perform a calculation of the branching fractions for the semileptonic decays of $B$ and $B_{s}$ mesons into final states containing orbitally excited charmed and charmed-strange mesons, which have become a very important source of information about the structure of heavy mesons. Analysis of the nonleptonic $B$ meson decays into $D^{(\ast)}D_{sJ}$ are also included.

Exclusive $c \to s,d$ semileptonic decays of spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 $cb$ baryons

We present results for exclusive semileptonic decay widths of ground state spin-$1/2$ and spin-$3/2$ $cb$ baryons corresponding to a $c\to s, d$ transition at the quark level. The relevance of hyperfine mixing in spin-1/2 $cb$ baryons is shown. Our form factors are compatible with heavy quark spin symmetry constraints obtained in the infinite heavy quark mass limit.

Nonleptonic $B \to D^{(*)}D_{sJ}^{(*)}$ decays and the nature of the orbitally excited charmed-strange mesons

The Belle Collaboration has recently reported a study of the decays $B \to D_{s1}(2536)^{+}\bar{D}^{(\ast)}$ and has given also estimates of relevant ratios between branching fractions of decays $B \to D^{(\ast)}D_{sJ}^{(\ast)}$ providing important information to check the structure of the $D_{s0}^{\ast}(2317)$, $D_{s1}(2460)$ and $D_{s1}(2536)$ mesons. The disagreement between experimental data and Heavy Quark Symmetry has been used as an indication that $D_{s0}^{\ast}(2317)$ and $D_{s1}(2460)$ mesons could have a more complex structure than the canonical $c\bar{s}$ one. We analyze these ratios within the framework of a constituent quark model, which allows us to incorporate the effects given by finite $c$-quark mass corrections. Our findings are that while the $D_{s1}(2460)$ meson could have a sizable non-$q\bar{q}$ component, the $D_{s0}^{\ast}(2317)$ and $D_{s1}(2536)$ mesons seem to be well described by a pure $q\bar{q}$ structure.

Selected topics on Hadrons in Nuclei

In this talk we report on selected topics on hadrons in nuclei. The first topic is the renormalization of the width of the $Λ(1520)$ in a nuclear medium. This is followed by a short update of the situation of the $ω$ in the medium. The investigation of the properties of $\bar{K}$ in the nuclear medium from the study of the $(K_{flight},p)$ reaction is also addressed, as well as properties of X,Y,Z charmed and hidden charm resonances in a nuclear medium. Finally we address the novel issue of multimeson states.

N-Delta(1232) axial form factors from weak pion production

The N-Delta axial form factors are determined from neutrino induced pion production ANL & BNL data by using a state of the art theoretical model, which accounts both for background mechanisms and deuteron effects. We find violations of the off diagonal Goldberger-Treiman relation at the level of 2 sigma which might have an impact in background calculations for T2K and MiniBooNE low energy neutrino oscillation precision experiments.

On the background in the $γp \to ω(π^0γ) p$ reaction and mixed event simulation

In this paper we evaluate sources of background for the $γp \to ωp$, with the $ω$ detected through its $π^0 γ$ decay channel, to compare with the experiment carried out at ELSA. We find background from $γp \to π^0 π^0 p$ followed by decay of a $π^0$ into two $γ$, recombining one $π^0$ and one $γ$, and from the $γp \to π^0 ηp$ reaction with subsequent decay of the $η$ into two photons. This background accounts for the data at $π^0 γ$ invariant masses beyond 700 MeV, but strength is missing at lower invariant masses which was attributed to photon misidentification events, which we simulate to get a good reproduction of the experimental background. Once this is done, we perform an event mixing simulation to reproduce the calculated background and we find that the method provides a good description of the background at low $π^0 γ$ invariant masses but fakes the background at high invariant masses, making background events at low invariant masses, which are due to $γ$ misidentification events, responsible for the background at high invariant masses which is due to the $γp \to π^0 π^0 p$ and $γp \to π^0 ηp$ reactions.

Coherent Neutrino Scattering

We present a microscopic model for coherent pion production off nuclei induced by neutrinos. This model is built upon a model for single nucleon processes that goes beyond the usual Delta dominance by including non resonant background contributions. We include nuclear medium effects: medium corrections to Delta$ properties and outgoing pion absortion via an optical potential. This results in major modifications to cross sections for low energy experiments when compared with phenomenological models like Rein-Sehgal's.

Semileptonic bc to cc and bb to bc Baryon Decays and Heavy Quark Spin Symmetry

We study the semileptonic decays of the lowest-lying $bc$ baryons to the lowest-lying $cc$ baryons ($Ξ_{bc}^{(\prime*)}\to Ξ_{cc}^{(*)}$ and $Ω_{bc}^{(\prime*)}\to Ω_{cc}^{(*)}$), in the limit $m_b, m_c \gg Λ_\mathrm{QCD}$ and close to the zero recoil point. The separate heavy quark spin symmetries make it possible to describe all these decays using a single form factor. We also show how these constraints can be used to test the validity of different quark model calculations. $bb$ to $bc$ baryon decays are also discussed.

Axial $N\to Δ(1232)$ and $N \to N^{\star}(1440)$ transition form factors

We calculate the axial $N\to Δ(1232)$ and $N\to N^{\star}(1440)$ transition form factors in a chiral constituent quark model. As required by the partial conservation of axial current ($PCAC$) condition, we include one- and two-body axial exchange currents. For the axial $N\to Δ(1232)$ form factors we compare with previous quark model calculations that use only one-body axial currents, and with experimental analyses. The paper provides the first calculation of all weak axial $N\to N^{\star}(1440)$ form factors. Our main result is that exchange currents are very important for certain axial transition form factors. In addition to improving our understanding of nucleon structure, the present results are relevant for neutrino-nucleus scattering cross section predictions needed in the analysis of neutrino mixing experiments.

Theoretical update on low energy neutrino-nucleus reactions

We review Quasielastic (QE) inclusive and semi--inclusive neutrino/antineutrino Charged Current (CC) and Neutral Current (NC) induced nuclear reactions at intermediate energies. We pay special attention to nuclear corrections besides Pauli blocking: Long and Short range nuclear correlations (RPA and SRC) and particle and hole Spectral Functions (SF). We also critically review the use of the Plane and Distorted Wave Impulse approximations (PWIA and DWIA) to describe inclusive one nucleon knockout reactions off nuclei. In this context, we present results from a Monte Carlo cascade method to account for the rescattering of the outgoing nucleon. Finally, we examine the effects of chiral non-resonant terms in neutrino pion production off the nucleon, and present some preliminary results on nuclear coherent pion production induced by neutrinos.

Strong one-pion decay of ground state charmed baryons

We evaluate the widths for the strong decays $Σ_c\toΛ_c π$, $Σ_c^*\toΛ_c π$ and $Ξ_c^{*}\toΞ_c π$. The calculations have been done within a nonrelativistic constituent quark model with wave functions that take advantage of the constraints imposed by heavy quark symmetry. Partial conservation of axial current hypothesis allows us to determine the strong vertices from an analysis of the weak axial current matrix elements. Our results are in good agreement with experimental data.

Charm- and Bottom- Baryons: A Variational Approach Using Heavy Quark Symmetry

We evaluate masses of bottom and charmed baryons using several non-relativistic quark potentials which parameters have been adjusted to the meson spectra. Heavy Quark Symmetry leads to important simplifications of the three body problem, which turns out to be easily solved by a simple variational ansatz. The wave functions obtained can be readily used to compute further observables as mass densities or form factors. The quark-quark potentials explored so far, show an overall good agreement with the experimental masses.

Electromagnetic Properties of the Delta(1232)

We calculate the electromagnetic moments and radii of the Delta(1232) in the nonrelativistic quark model, including two-body exchange currents. We show that two-body exchange currents lead to nonvanishing Delta and N-->Delta transition quadrupole moments even if the wave functions have no D-state admixture. The usual explanation based on the single-quark transition model involves D-state admixtures but no exchange currents. We derive a parameter- free relation between the N-->Delta transition quadrupole moment and the neutron charge radius: Q(N-->Delta) = r^2(neutron)/sqrt(2). Furthermore, we calculate the M1 and E2 amplitudes for the process photon + N -->Delta. We find that the E2 amplitude receives sizeable contributions from exchange currents. These are more important than the ones which result from D-state admixtures due to tensor forces between quarks if a reasonable quark core radius of about 0.6 fm is used. We obtain a ratio of E2/M1=-3.5%.

A Self-Consistent First-Principles Technique Having Linear Scaling

An algorithm for first-principles electronic structure calculations having a computational cost which scales linearly with the system size is presented. Our method exploits the real-space localization of the density matrix, and in this respect it is related to the technique of Li, Nunes and Vanderbilt. The density matrix is expressed in terms of localized support functions, and a matrix of variational parameters, L, having a finite spatial range. The total energy is minimized with respect to both the support functions and the elements of the L matrix. The method is variational, and becomes exact as the ranges of the support functions and the L matrix are increased. We have tested the method on crystalline silicon systems containing up to 216 atoms, and we discuss some of these results.
