Notes on the Dynamics of Noncommutative U(2) and Commutative SU(3) Instantons

We examine the dynamics of noncommutative instantons of instanton number $2$ and commutative instantons of instanton number $3$ in 5d Super Yang Mills theory. We begin by detailing the construction of the 1/4-BPS instanton solutions, their moduli space, and the moduli space potential using an explicit parametrisation of the moduli space coordinates in terms of the biquaternions. We then go on to numerically analyse the dynamics on the moduli spaces we have constructed, discussing some of the numerical issues which arose and describing the code we developed to solve them

Web of Seiberg-like dualities for 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ quivers

We propose a universal manipulation to obtain Seiberg-like dualities of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ general quiver gauge theories with unitary, symplectic and orthogonal gauge groups coupled to fundamental and bifundamental matter fields. We illustrate this with several examples of linear, circular and star-shaped quiver gauge theories. We examine the local operators in the theories by computing supersymmetric indices and also find precise matching for the proposed dualities as strong evidence. We also generalize the dualities in the presence of a boundary on which the theories obey $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ chiral half-BPS boundary conditions.

Topological M-Strings and Supergroup WZW Models

We study the boundary conditions in the topologically twisted Chern-Simons matter theories with the Lie 3-algebraic structure. We find that the supersymmetric boundary conditions and the gauge invariant boundary conditions can be unified as the complexified gauge invariant boundary conditions which lead to the supergroup WZW models. We propose that the low-energy effective field theories on the two-dimensional intersection of multiple M2-branes on a holomorphic curve inside K3 with two non-parallel M5-branes on the K3 are supergroup WZW models from the topologically twisted BLG-model and the ABJM-model.

Moduli Space Dynamics of Noncommutative U(2) Instantons

We consider the low energy dynamics of charge two instantons on noncommutative $\mathbb{R}^{2}_{NC}\times\mathbb{R}^{2}_{NC}$ in U(2) 5-dimensional super-Yang-Mills, using the Manton approximation for slow-moving instantons to calculate the moduli space metric. By employing the ADHM construction, we are able to understand some aspects of the geometry and topology of the system. We also consider the effect of adding a potential to the moduli space, giving scattering results for noncommutative dyonic instantons.

Non-anticommutativity in Presence of a Boundary

In this paper we consider non-anticommutative field theories in $\mathcal{N} =2$ superspace formalism on three-dimensional manifolds with a boundary. We modify the original Lagrangian in such a way that it preserves half the supersymmetry even in the presence of a boundary. We also analyse the partial breaking of supersymmetry caused by non-anticommutativity between fermionic coordinates. Unlike in four dimensions, in three dimensions a theory with $\mathcal{N} =1/2$ supersymmetry cannot be obtained by a non-anticommutative deformation of an $\mathcal{N} =1$ theory. However, in this paper we construct a three dimensional theory with $\mathcal{N} =1/2$ supersymmetry by studying a combination of non-anticommutativity and boundary effects, starting from $\mathcal{N} =2$ supersymmetry.

Supersymmetric Chern-Simons Theory in Presence of a Boundary

In this paper we analyse super-Chern-Simons theory in $\mathcal{N} =1$ superspace formalism, in the presence of a boundary. We modify the Lagrangian for the Chern-Simons theory in such a way that it is supersymmetric even in the presence of a boundary. Also, even though the Chern-Simons theory is not gauge invariant in the presence of a boundary, if it is suitable coupled to a gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten model, then the resultant theory can be made gauge invariant. Thus, by suitably adding extra boundary degrees of freedom, the gauge and supersymmetry variations of the boundary theory exactly cancel the boundary terms generated by the variations of the bulk Chern-Simons theory. We also discuss how this can be applied to the ABJM model in $\mathcal{N} =1$ superspace, and we then describe the BRST and anti-BRST symmetries of the resultant gauge invariant supersymmetric theory.

The low energy dynamics of charge two dyonic instantons

We explore the low energy dynamics of charge two instantons and dyonic instantons in SU(2) 5-dimensional Yang-Mills. We make use of the moduli space approximation and first calculate the moduli space metric for two instantons. For dyonic instantons the effective action of the moduli space approximation also includes a potential term which we calculate. Using the ADHM construction we are able to understand some aspects of the topology and structure of the moduli space. We find that instantons undergo right angled scattering after a head on collision and we are able to give an analytic description of this in terms of a quotient of the moduli space by symmetries of the ADHM data. We also explore the scattering of instantons and dyonic instantons numerically in a constrained region of the moduli space. Finally we exhibit some examples of closed geodesics on the moduli space, and geodesics which hit the moduli space singularities in finite time.

Multiple Self-Dual Strings on M5-Branes

We show how to define Chern-Simons matter theories with boundary. Rather than imposing boundary conditions, we introduce new boundary degrees of freedom from the beginning and show how they can be used to cancel the gauge non-invariance of the Chern-Simons action. We apply this method to the ABJM theory with boundary. By imposing also boundary conformal invariance, we determine the required boundary action. This result allows us to derive the action for the multiple self-dual strings living on M5-branes.

Topological charges in SL(2,R) covariant massive 11-dimensional and Type IIB SUGRA

In this paper we construct closed expressions that correspond to the topological charges of the various 1/2-BPS states of the maximal 10 and 11-dimensional supergravity theories. These expressions are related to the structure of the SUSY algebras in curved spacetimes. We mainly focus on IIB SUGRA and 11-dimensional SUGRA in a double M9-brane background, with an emphasis on the SL(2,R) multiplet structure of the charges and how these map between theories. This includes the charges corresponding to the multiplets of 7- and 9-branes in IIB. We find that examining the possible multiplet structures of the charges provides another tool for exploring the spectrum of BPS states that appear in these theories. As a prerequisite to constructing the charges we determine the field equations and multiplet structure of the 11-dimensional gauge potentials, extending previous results on the subject. The massive gauge transformations of the fields are also discussed. We also demonstrate how these massive gauge transformations are compatible with the construction of an SL(2,R) covariant kinetic term in the 11-dimensional Kaluza-Klein monopole worldvolume action.

AdS/CFT Duality for Non-Anticommutative Supersymmetric Gauge Theory

We construct type IIB supergravity duals of non-anticommutative deformed N = 4 SU(N) gauge theories. We consider in particular deformations preserving N = (1,0) and N = (1/2,0) supersymmetry. Such theories can be realised on N D3-branes in specific self-dual 5-form backgrounds. We show that the required 5-form field strengths can be produced by configurations of intersecting D3-branes and we are then able to construct the supergravity solutions in the near-horizon limit. We consider some consequences of this duality, in particular showing that the gravity duals predict that the dimensions of a subset of BPS operators are not modified by the deformation.

Four-dimensional SYM probes in wrapped M5-brane backgrounds

We study the worldvolume supersymmetric gauge theory of M-branes probing backgrounds corresponding to wrapped M5-branes. In the case of M5-branes wrapping a 2-cycle in two-dimensional complex space, we use M2-brane probes to compute the BPS spectra of the corresponding N=2 gauge theory as well as M5-brane probes to calculate field theory parameters such as the gauge coupling, theta angle and complex scalar moduli space metric. This background describes a large class of Hanany-Witten type models when dimensionally reduced to Type IIA 10d string theory. We calculate the instanton action using a D0-brane probe in this limit. For the case of M5-branes wrapping a 2-cycle in three-dimensional complex space, we firstly show an alternative method to derive this solution involving the projection conditions and certain spinor bilinear differential equations. We also consider M5-brane probes of this background, and analyse the corresponding N=1 MQCD gauge theory parameters. In general there were no supergravity corrections to field theory parameters when compared to previous flat-space field theory analysis.

Intersecting brane solutions in string and M-theory

We review various aspects of configurations of intersecting branes, including the conditions for preservation of supersymmetry. In particular, we discuss the projection conditions on the Killing spinors for given brane configurations and the relation to calibrations. This highlights the close connection between intersecting branes and branes wrapping supersymmetric cycles as well as special holonomy manifolds. We also explain how these conditions can be used to find supergravity solutions without directly solving the Einstein equations. The description of intersecting branes is considered both in terms of the brane worldvolume theories and as supergravity solutions. There are well-known simple procedures (harmonic function rules) for writing down the supergravity solutions for supersymmetric configurations of orthogonally intersecting branes. However, such solutions involve smeared or delocalised branes. We describe several methods of constructing solutions with less smearing, including some fully localised solutions. Some applications of these supergravity solutions are also considered - in particular the study of black holes and gauge theories.
