Massive 3d Abelian gauge theories and electric-magnetic duality

We study a model of massive photons with a parity invariant and non-local mass term. We identify a discrete symmetry of the classical equations of motion and show that this symmetry can be thought of as an electric-magnetic duality valid only in the presence of a non-zero photon mass. We explore this duality and discuss some features of the theory. We define notions of electric and magnetic charge that can be computed in any spatial domain as a volume integral of a density. These integrals can be transformed into integrals on the boundary. For instance, the electric charge is given by the sum of the electric flux through the boundary of the domain and a line integral of the dual gauge field along that same boundary. We show that electric and magnetic charge is quantized $q_mq_e = 2πn m_γ/e^2$, where $e$ is the coupling constant and $m_γ$ is the mass of the photon. Classical field configurations associated with external electric and magnetic charges as well as the classical forces between electric and magnetic charges are computed.

Non-local symmetries for Yang-Mills theories and their massive counterparts in two and three dimensions

We identify a non-local symmetry for Yang-Mills theories in 1+1 and 2+1 spacetime dimensions. The symmetry mixes a vector current with the gauge field. The current involved in the symmetry is required to satisfy certain constraints. The explicit solution for the current obeying these constraints, is obtained in two spacetime dimensions and in the abelian case in three dimensions. We conjecture that the current is generated from a non-local gauge and Lorentz invariant mass term in three dimensions and provide some evidence for it. We also posit a conserved current associated with the symmetry generators and derive some of its properties. In the Abelian case, we compute the symmetry algebra and show that additional symmetry generators have to be included for the algebra to close. The algebra contains an SO(2,1) subalgebra. We also comment on the implications of this symmetry for N=1 supersymmetry.

Exact Ground State Wave Functions for N Anyons in a Magnetic Field on a Torus

The complete set of ground state wave functions for N anyons in an external magnetic field on the torus is found. The cases when the filling factor is less than or equal to one are considered. The single valued description of anyons is employed through out by coupling bosons to a Chern-Simons field. At the end, the Chern-Simons interaction is removed by a singular gauge transformation as a result of which the wave functions become multi-component in agreement with other studies.

The statistics transmuting Chern-Simons field and the braid group on Riemann surfaces of genus g>0

We study bosons interacting with an abelian Chern-Simons field on Riemann surfaces of genus $g>0$. It is shown that a singular gauge transformation brings the hamiltonian to free form. The transformed wave functions furnish a multi-component representation of the braid group studied by Imbo and March-Russell. The construction constitutes a proof of the equivalence of bosons coupled to a Chern-Simons field and anyons and generalizes the well known equivalence of the two pictures on the plane.
