Lifshitz Quantum Mechanics and Anisotropic Josephson Junction

We consider quantum mechanics in spacetime with anisotropy in time. Such Lifshitz quantum mechanics is characterized by a kinetic term with fractional derivatives. We show that, contrary to a common claim in the literature, local conservation of probability is respected when the probability current is properly identified. As an application we consider a Josephson Junction with an insulating layer exhibiting Lifshitz anisotropy. We show that anisotropy modifies the tunneling rate and can significantly enhance the performance of the Josephson Junction.

Conformal Boundary Condition and Massive Gravitons in AdS/BCFT

According to Witten [1], the conformal boundary condition of gravity, which specifies the conformal geometry of the boundary and the trace of the extrinsic curvature, is elliptic and leads to well-defined perturbation theory of gravity about any classical solution. The conformal boundary condition was previously considered in [2, 3] in the context of AdS/BCFT, wherein the equation of motion of the end-of-the-world was derived and emphasized. In this paper, we investigate further other consequences of the conformal boundary condition in AdS/BCFT. We derive the boundary central charges of the holographic Weyl anomaly and show that they are exactly the same for conformal boundary condition and Dirichlet boundary condition. We analysis the metric perturbation with conformal boundary condition (CBC), Dirichlet boundary condition (DBC) and Neumann boundary condition (NBC) imposed on the end-of-the-world brane and show that they admit an interpretation as the fluctuation of the extrinsic curvature (case of CBC and DBC) and the induced metric (case of NBC) of Q respectively. In all cases, the fluctuation modes are massive, which are closely relevant to the massive island formation in the literature. Our results reveal that there are non-trivial gravitational dynamics from extrinsic curvatures on the conformal and Dirichlet branes, which may have interesting applications to the island. We also discuss, in passing, the localization of gravitons in brane world theory. We find that, contrary to NBC, the graviton for CBC/DBC is located on the brane with non-positive tension instead of non-negative tension.

Gravitational Waves in Metastable Supersymmetry Breaking

If supersymmetry is broken in metastable vacua, it is not clear why we are now in there rather than supersymmetric vacua. Moreover, it is natural to expect that we were in supersymmetric vacua, which have higher symmetry than metastable vacua, in the early universe. In this paper, we reexamine and improve the previous analysis on the cosmological evolution of the vacuum structure in the ISS model of metastable supersymmetry breaking by taking into account constraints on the reheating temperature, which is needed to avoid the overproduction of gravitinos. It turns out that the desired phase transition from a supersymmetric vacuum to a metastable vacuum is allowed only in the light gravitino mass region $m_{3/2} < 4.7$ eV. This is achieved by either rolling down potential or tunneling processes depending on the reheating temperature. We show that when the tunneling processes are realized, abundant gravitational waves could be produced from collisions of runaway bubbles. The resulting gravitational waves are detectable with the future gravitational wave interferometers like LISA and DECIGO.

Fermi Condensation induced by Weyl Anomaly

Fermi condensation is usually a phenomena of strongly correlated system. In this letter, we point out a novel mechanism for condensation of Dirac fermions due to Weyl anomaly. The condensation has its physical origin in the nontrivial response of the fermion vacuum to changes in the background spacetime (either boundary location or the background metric), and can be felt when a background scalar field is turned on. The scalar field can be, for example, the Higgs field in a fundamental theory or the phonon in condensed matter system. For a spacetime with boundaries, the induced Fermi condensate is inversely proportional to the proper distance from the boundary. For a conformally flat spacetime without boundaries, Fermi condensation depends on the conformal factor and its derivatives. We also generalize the Banks-Casher relation which relates the Fermi condensate to the zero mode density of the Dirac operator to a local form. Due to its universal nature, this anomaly induced Fermi condensate can be expected to have a wide range of applications in physics.

Gravitational Waves in Axion Dark Matter

Axion dark matter is interesting as it allows a natural coupling to the gravitational Chern-Simons term. In the presence of an axion background, the gravitational Chern-Simons term produces parity violating effects in the gravitational sector, in particular on the propagation of gravitational waves. Previously, it has been shown that the coherent oscillation of the axion field leads to a parametric amplification of gravitational waves with a specific frequency. In this paper we focus on the parity violating effects of the Chern-Simon coupling and show the occurrence of gravitational birefringence. We also find deviation from the speed of light of the velocity of the gravitational waves. We give constraints on the axion-Chern-Simons coupling constant and the abundance of the axion dark matter from the observation of GW170817 and GRB170817A.

Weyl Anomaly induced Fermi Condensation and Holography

Recently it is found that, due to Weyl anomaly, a background scalar field induces a non-trivial Fermi condensation for theories with Yukawa couplings. For simplicity, the paper consider only scalar type Yukawa coupling and, in the BCFT case, only for a specific boundary condition. In these cases, the Weyl anomaly takes on a simple special form. In this paper, we generalize the results to more general situations. First, we obtain general expressions of Weyl anomaly due to a background scalar and pseudo scalar field in general 4d BCFTs. Then, we derive the general form of Fermi condensation from the Weyl anomaly. It is remarkable that, in general, Fermi condensation is non-zero even if there was not a non-vanishing scalar field background. Finally, we verify our results with free BCFT with Yukawa coupling to scalar and pseudo-scalar background potential with general chiral bag boundary condition and with holographic BCFT. In particular, we obtain the shape and curvature dependence of the Fermi condensate from the holographic one point function.

$c$-Theorem for Anisotropic RG Flows from Holographic Entanglement Entropy

We propose a candidate $c$-function in arbitrary dimensional quantum field theories with broken Lorentz and rotational symmetry. For holographic theories we derive the necessary and sufficient conditions on the geometric background for these $c$-functions to satisfy the $c$-theorem. We obtain the null energy conditions for anisotropic background to show that do not themselves assure the $c$-theorem. By employing them, we find that is possible to impose conditions on the UV data that are enough to guarantee at least one monotonic $c$-function along the RG flow. These UV conditions can be used as building blocks for the construction of anisotropic monotonic RG flows. Finally, we apply our results to several known anisotropic theories and identify the region in the parameters space of the metric where the $c$-theorem holds for our proposed $c$-function.

AdS/dS CFT Correspondence

We propose and study a holographic dual of the type IIB superstring theory of AdS_5 x S^5 in terms of the N=4 superconformal Yang-Mills theory on dS_4. We use the bulk to boundary formalism to evaluate the boundary correlation functions and verify that it agrees with the expected result in dS conformal field theory. The gauge theory is expected to be UV finite and enjoy exact SL(2,Z) strong-weak duality. As the string theory Green-Schwarz sigma model carries an infinite number of classically conserved charges, it also suggest that the superconformal Yang-Mills theory is integrable and deserves further studies.

Universality in the Shape Dependence of Holographic Rényi Entropy for General Higher Derivative Gravity

We consider higher derivative gravity and obtain universal relations for the shape coefficients $(f_a, f_b, f_c)$ of the shape dependent universal part of the Rényi entropy for four dimensional CFTs in terms of the parameters $(c, t_2, t_4)$ of two-point and three-point functions of stress tensors. As a consistency check, these shape coefficients $f_a$ and $f_c$ satisfy the differential relation as derived previously for the Rényi entropy. Interestingly, these holographic relations also apply to weakly coupled conformal field theories such as theories of free fermions and vectors but are violated by theories of free scalars. The mismatch of $f_a$ for scalars has been observed in the literature and is due to certain delicate boundary contributions to the modular Hamiltonian. Interestingly, we find a combination of our holographic relations which are satisfied by all free CFTs including scalars. We conjecture that this combined relation is universal for general CFTs in four dimensional spacetime. Finally, we find there are similar universal laws for holographic Rényi entropy in general dimensions.

Weyl Semimetal and Nonassociative Nambu Geometry

Topological materials are characterized by an electronic band structure with nontrivial topological properties. In this paper, we introduce a basis of operators for the linear space of operators spanned by charge-neutral fermion bilinears. These band projected density operators are constructed using directly the eigenfunctions of the electronic energy band structure and there is no need to assume a flat Berry curvature. As a result, our set of operators has a wider range of validity and is sensitive to physical phenomena which are not detectable in the flat curvature limit. In particular, we show that the Berry monopole configuration of Weyl semimetal give rises to a nonvanishing Jacobiator for these band projected density operators, implying the emergence of nonassociativity at the location of the Weyl nodes. The resulting nonassociativity observes the fundamental identity, the defining property of the Nambu bracket and so one may call this a nonassociative Nambu geometry. We also derive the corresponding uncertainty principle.

Dilaton, Screening of the Cosmological Constant and IR-Driven Inflation

It is known that infrared (IR) quantum fluctuations in de Sitter space could break the de Sitter symmetry and generate time dependent observable effects. In this paper, we consider a dilaton-gravity theory. We find that gravitational IR effects lead to a time dependent shift on the vev of the dilaton and results in a screening (temporal) of the cosmological constant/Hubble parameter. In the Einstein frame, the effect is exponentiated and can give rises to a much more notable amount of screening. Taking the dilaton as inflaton, we obtain an inflationary expansion of the slow roll kind. This inflation is driven by the IR quantum effects of de Sitter gravity and does not rely on the use of a slow roll potential. As a result, our model is free from the eta problem which baffles the standard slow roll inflation models.

Non-Abelian Self-Dual Strings in Six Dimensions from Four Dimensional 1/2-BPS Monopoles

We explain a new construction of self-dual string solutions to the non-abelian two-form self-duality equation proposed in \cite{CK}. This class of self-dual strings is determined by the BPS monopoles in four-dimensions and the self dual string charge is given by the charge of the monopole. Our construction covers the SO(4) invariant self-dual string solutions found previously. We have also constructed, based on the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole, a singular solution that describes two finitely separated M5-branes meeting midway in between. We comment that as BPS monopoles are generally given by the Nahm construction, our construction suggests that a generalized Nahm transform may exist for the non-abelian self-dual strings.

Instanton String and M-Wave in Multiple M5-Branes System

We consider the non-abelian self-dual two-form theory arXiv:1203.4224 and find new exact solutions. Our solutions are supported by Yang-Mills (anti)instantons in 4-dimensions and describe wave moving in null directions. We argue and provide evidence that these instanton string solutions correspond to M-wave (MW) on the worldvolume of multiple M5-branes. When dimensionally reduced on a circle, the MW/M5 system is reduced to the D0/D4 system with the D0-branes represented by the Yang-Mills instanton of the D4-branes Yang-Mills gauge theory. We show that this picture is precisely reproduced by the dimensional reduction of our instanton string solutions.

Non-abelian Self-Dual String and M2-M5 Branes Intersection in Supergravity

We consider the non-abelian theory (http://arxiv.org/abs/arXiv:1203.4224) for an arbitrary number $N_5$ of five-branes and construct self-dual string solution with an arbitrary $N_2$ unit of self-dual charges. This generalizes the previous solution of non-abelian self-dual string (http://arxiv.org/abs/arXiv:1207.1095) of $N_5=2, N_2=1$. The radius-transverse distance relation describing the M2-branes spike, particularly its dependence on $N_2$ and $N_5$, is obtained and is found to agree precisely with the supergravity description of an intersecting M2-M5 branes system.

A Theory of Non-Abelian Tensor Gauge Field with Non-Abelian Gauge Symmetry G x G

The Chern-Simon action of the ABJM theory is not gauge invariant in the presence of a boundary. In the paper arXiv:0909.2333, this was shown to imply the existence of a Kac-Moody symmetry on the theory of multiple self-dual strings. In this paper we conjecture that the Kac-Moody symmetry induces a U(N)x U(N) gauge symmetry in the theory of N coincident M5-branes. As a start, we construct this G x G gauge symmetry algebra structure which naturally includes the tensor gauge transformation for a non-abelian 2-form tensor gauge field. This new G x G gauge structure allows us to write down a theory of a non-abelian tensor gauge field readily. For application to multiple M5-branes, we note that the field content of the G x G non-abelian tensor gauge theory can be fitted nicely as (1,0) supermultiplets; and we suggest a construction of the theory of multiple M5-branes with manifest (1,0) supersymmetry.

Non-abelian Action for Multiple Five-Branes with Self-Dual Tensors

We construct an action for non-abelian 2-form in 6-dimensions. Our action consists of a non-abelian generalization of the abelian action of Perry and Schwarz for a single five-brane. It admits a self-duality equation on the field strength as the equation of motion. It has a modified 6d Lorentz symmetry. On dimensional reduction on a circle, our action gives the standard 5d Yang-Mills action plus higher order corrections. Based on these properties, we propose that our theory describes the gauge sector of multiple M5-branes in flat space.

Non-Abelian Self-Dual String Solutions

We consider the equations of motion of the non-abelian 5-branes theory recently constructed in http://arxiv.org/abs/arXiv:1203.4224 and find exact string solutions both for uncompactified and compactified spacetime. Although one does not have the full supersymmetric construction of the non-abelian (2,0) theory, by combining knowledge of conformal symmetry and R-symmetry one can argue for the form of the 1/2 BPS equations in the case when only one scalar field is turned on. We solve this system and show that our string solutions could be lifted to become solutions of the non-abelian (2,0) theory with self-dual electric and magnetic charges, with the scalar field describing a M2-brane spike emerging out of the multiple M5-branes worldvolume.

D1-Strings in Large RR 3-Form Flux, Quantum Nambu Geometry and M5-Branes in C-Field

We consider D1-branes in a RR flux background and show that there is a low energy - large flux double scaling limit where the D1-branes action is dominated by a Chern-Simons-Myers coupling term. As a classical solution to the matrix model, we find a novel quantized geometry characterized by a quantum Nambu 3-bracket. Infinite dimensional representations of the quantum Nambu geometry are constructed which demonstrate that the quantum Nambu geometry is intrinsically different from the ordinary Lie algebra type noncommutative geometry. Matrix models for the IIB string, IIA string and M-theory in the corresponding backgrounds are constructed. A classical solution of a quantum Nambu geometry in the IIA Matrix string theory gives rise to an expansion of the fundamental strings into a system of multiple D4-branes and the fluctuation is found to describe an action for a non-abelian 3-form field strength which is a natural non-abelian generalization of the PST action for a single D4-brane. In view of the recent proposals of the M5-branes theory in terms of the D4-branes, we suggest a natural way to include all the KK modes and propose an action for the the multiple M5-branes in a constant C-field. The worldvolume of the M5-branes in a C-field is found to be described by a quantum Nambu geometry with self-dual parameters. It is intriguing that our action is naturally formulated in terms of a 1-form gauge field living on a six dimensional quantum Nambu geometry.

Cartan-Weyl 3-algebras and the BLG Theory I: Classification of Cartan-Weyl 3-algebras

As Lie algebras of compact connected Lie groups, semisimple Lie algebras have wide applications in the description of continuous symmetries of physical systems. Mathematically, semisimple Lie algebra admits a Cartan-Weyl basis of generators which consists of a Cartan subalgebra of mutually commuting generators H_I and a number of step generators E^αthat are characterized by a root space of non-degenerate one-forms α. This simple decomposition in terms of the root space allows for a complete classification of semisimple Lie algebras. In this paper, we introduce the analogous concept of a Cartan-Weyl Lie 3-algebra. We analyze their structure and obtain a complete classification of them. Many known examples of metric Lie 3-algebras (e.g. the Lorentzian 3-algebras) are special cases of the Cartan-Weyl 3-algebras. Due to their elegant and simple structure, we speculate that Cartan-Weyl 3-algebras may be useful for describing some kinds of generalized symmetries. As an application, we consider their use in the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson (BLG) theory.

Open M2-branes with Flux and Modified Basu-Harvey Equation

The supersymmetric actions of closed multiple M2 branes with flux for the BL and the ABJM theories have been constructed recently by Lambert and Richmond in \cite{LR}. In this paper we extend the construction to the case of open M2-branes with flux and derive the boundary conditions. This allows us to derive the modified Basu-Harvey equation in the presence of flux. As an example, we consider the Lorentzian BL model. A new feature of the fuzzy funnel solution describing a D2-D4 intersection is obtained as a result of the flux.

Real-time correlators in Kerr/CFT correspondence

We study real-time correlators in the Kerr/CFT correspondence. The near-horizon geometry of extreme and near-extremal Kerr black holes can be taken as warped spacetimes with the warping factors depending on the transverse radius and the angular variable. By considering the Kerr/CFT correspondence as a generalized warped AdS/CFT correspondence, we show how to compute the CFT real-time correlation functions. We find that the retarded Green's functions, the cross sections and the quasi-normal modes are all in perfect match with the predictions of the dual CFT. The same analysis is also generalized to the charged Newman-Kerr black holes .

Multiple Self-Dual Strings on M5-Branes

We show how to define Chern-Simons matter theories with boundary. Rather than imposing boundary conditions, we introduce new boundary degrees of freedom from the beginning and show how they can be used to cancel the gauge non-invariance of the Chern-Simons action. We apply this method to the ABJM theory with boundary. By imposing also boundary conformal invariance, we determine the required boundary action. This result allows us to derive the action for the multiple self-dual strings living on M5-branes.

Nonequilibrium Dynamics in Noncommutative Spacetime

We study the effects of spacetime noncommutativity on the nonequilibrium dynamics of particles in a thermal bath. We show that the noncommutative thermal bath does not suffer from any further IR/UV mixing problem in the sense that all the finite-temperature non-planar quantities are free from infrared singularities. We also point out that the combined effect of finite temperature and noncommutative geometry has a distinct effect on the nonequilibrium dynamics of particles propagating in a thermal bath: depending on the momentum of the mode of concern, noncommutative geometry may switch on or switch off their decay and thermalization. This momentum dependent alternation of the decay and thermalization rates could have significant impacts on the nonequilibrium phenomena in the early universe at which spacetime noncommutativity may be present. Our results suggest a re-examination of some of the important processes in the early universe such as reheating after inflation, baryogenesis and the freeze-out of superheavy dark matter candidates.

AdS/CFT Duality for Non-Anticommutative Supersymmetric Gauge Theory

We construct type IIB supergravity duals of non-anticommutative deformed N = 4 SU(N) gauge theories. We consider in particular deformations preserving N = (1,0) and N = (1/2,0) supersymmetry. Such theories can be realised on N D3-branes in specific self-dual 5-form backgrounds. We show that the required 5-form field strengths can be produced by configurations of intersecting D3-branes and we are then able to construct the supergravity solutions in the near-horizon limit. We consider some consequences of this duality, in particular showing that the gravity duals predict that the dimensions of a subset of BPS operators are not modified by the deformation.

Time-dependent AdS/CFT Duality and Null Singularity

We consider AdS/CFT correspondence for time-dependent \II B backgrounds in this paper. The supergravity solutions we construct are supersymmetric pp-waves on AdS and may have null singularity in the bulk. The dual gauge theory is also constructed explicitly and is given by a time-dependent supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory living on the boundary. Apart from the usual terms that are dictated by the geometry, our gauge theory action features also a time-dependent axion coupling and a time-dependent gauge coupling. Both of which are necessary due to the presence of a nontrivial dilaton and axion profile in the supergravity solution. The proposal is supported by a precise matching in the symmetries and functional dependence on the null coordinate of the two theories. As applications, we show how the bulk Einstein equation may be reproduced from the gauge theory. We also study and compare the behaviour of the field theory two-point functions. We find that the two-point function computed by using duality is different from that by doing a direct field theory computation. In particular the spacetime singularity is not seen in our gauge theory result, suggesting that the spacetime singularity may be resolved in the gauge theory.

Konishi Anomaly and Central Extension in N=1/2 Supersymmetry

We show that the 4-dimensional N=1/2 supersymmetry algebra admits central extension. The central charges are supported by domain wall and the central charges are computed. We also determine the Konishi anomaly for N=1/2 supersymmetric gauge theory. Due to the new couplings in the Lagrangian, many terms appears. We show that these terms sum up to give the expected form for the holomorphic part of the Konishi anomaly. For the anti-holomorphic part, we give a simple argument that the naive generalization has to be modified. We suggest that the anti-holomorphic Konishi anomaly is given by a gauge invariant completion using open Wilson line.

Time-Space Noncommutative Abelian Solitons

We demonstrate the construction of solitons for a time-space Moyal-deformed integrable U(n) sigma model (the Ward model) in 2+1 dimensions. These solitons cannot travel parallel to the noncommutative spatial direction. For the U(1) case, the rank-one single-soliton configuration is constructed explicitly and is singular in the commutative limit. The projection to 1+1 dimensions reduces it to a noncommutative instanton-like configuration. The latter is governed by a new integrable equation, which describes a Moyal-deformed sigma model with a particular Euclidean metric and a magnetic field.

Colliding Plane Waves in String Theory

We construct colliding plane wave solutions in higher dimensional gravity theory with dilaton and higher form flux, which appears naturally in the low energy theory of string theory. Especially, the role of the junction condition in constructing the solutions is emphasized. Our results not only include the previously known CPW solutions, but also provide a wide class of new solutions that is not known in the literature before. We find that late time curvature singularity is always developed for the solutions we obtained in this paper. This supports the generalized version of Tipler's theorem in higher dimensional supergravity.

The String Light Cone in the pp-wave Background

In this letter, we determine the particle and the string light cone in the pp-wave background. The result is a deformed version of the flat one. We point out the light cone exhibits an intriguing periodicity in the light cone time direction x^+ with a period \sim 1/ μ. Our results also suggest that a quantum theory in the pp-wave background can be formulated consistently only if the background is periodic in the light cone time x^+.

Noncommutative D-brane and Open String in pp-wave Background with B-field

The open string ending on a D-brane with a constant B-field in a pp-wave Ramond-Ramond background is exactly solvable. The theory is controlled by three dimensionful parameters: alpha', the mass parameter (RR background times the lightcone momentum) and the B-field. We quantize the open string theory and determine the full noncommutative structure. In particular, we find a fully noncommutative phase space whose noncommutativity depends on all these parameters. The lightcone Hamiltionian is obtained, and as a consequence of the nontrivial commutation relations of the theory, new features of the spectrum are noted. Various scaling limits of the string results are considered. Physical implications are discussed.

Noncommutativity and Model Building

We propose a way to introduce matter fields transforming in arbitrary representations of the gauge group in noncommutative U(N) gauge theories. We then argue that in the presence of supersymmetry, an ordinary commutative SU(N) gauge theory with a general matter content can always be embedded into a noncommutative U(N) theory at energies above the noncommutativity mass scale M_{NC} ~ θ^{-1/2}. At energies below M_{NC}, the U(1) degrees of freedom decouple due to the IR/UV mixing, and the noncommutative theory reduces to its commutative counterpart. Supersymmetry can be spontaneously broken by a Fayet-Iliopoulos D-term introduced in the noncommutative U(N) theory. U(1) degrees of freedom become arbitrarily weakly coupled in the infrared and naturally play the role of the hidden sector for supersymmetry breaking. To illustrate these ideas we construct a noncommutative U(5) GUT model with Fayet-Iliopoulos supersymmetry breaking, which reduces to a realistic commutative theory in the infrared.

PP-wave string interactions from n-point correlators of BMN operators

BMN operators are characterized by the fact that they have infinite R-charge and finite anomalous dimension in the BMN double scaling limit. Using this fact, we show that the BMN operators close under operator product expansion and form a sector in the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We then identify short-distance limits of general BMN n-point correlators, and show how they correspond to the pp-wave string interactions. We also discuss instantons in the light of the pp-wave/SYM correspondence.

Remarks on the Calculations of Charged Open String Amplitudes: the 1-loop Tadpole

In string theory, there are various physical situations where the world-sheet fields have a shifted moding. For instance, this is the case for the twisted closed string in Z_N orbifold or for the charged open string in a constant electro-magnetic field. Because of this feature, it is quite challenging to give explicit formulae describing the string interaction, even for the bosonic case. In this note, we focus on the case of the charged open bosonic string and construct the 1-loop tadpole which is an object generating all 1-point functions from the annulus in the presence of an external field. In the operator formalism, this represents one of the basic building blocks for the construction of a general loop amplitude.

Three-point functions in N=4 Yang-Mills theory and pp-waves

Recently it has been proposed that the coefficient of the three-point function of the BMN operators in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is related to the three-string interactions in the pp-wave background. We calculate three-point functions of these operators to the first order in the effective Yang-Mills coupling lambda' = g_{YM}^2 N/J^2 in planar perturbation theory. On the string theory side, we derive the explicit expressions of the Neumann matrices to all orders in 1/(μp^+ α')^2. This allows us to compute the corresponding three-string scattering amplitudes. This provides an all orders prediction for the field theory three-point functions. We compare our field theory results with the string theory results to the subleading order in 1/(μp^+ α')^2 and find perfect agreement.

Multiloop Noncommutative Open String Theory and their QFT limit

The multiloop amplitudes for open bosonic string in presence of a constant B-field are derived from first principles. The basic ingredients of the construction are the commutation relations for the string modes and the Reggeon vertex describing the interaction among three generic string states. The modifications due to the presence of the B-field affect non--trivially only the zero modes. This makes it possible to write in a simple and elegant way the general expression for multiloop string amplitudes in presence of a constant B-field. The field theory limit of these string amplitudes is also considered. We show that it reproduces exactly the Feynman diagrams of noncommutative field theories. Issues of UV/IR are briefly discussed.

Worldvolume Uncertainty Relations for D-Branes

By quantizing an open string ending on a D-brane in a nontrivial supergravity background, we argue that there is a new kind of uncertainty relation on a D-brane worldvolume. Furthermore, we fix the form of the uncertainty relations and their dependence on the string coupling constant by requiring them to be consistent with various string theory and M theory dualities. In this way we find a web of uncertainties of spacetime for all kinds of brane probes, including fundamental strings, D-branes of all dimensions as well as M theory membranes and fivebranes.

Non-Abelian Anomalies and Effective Actions for a Homogeneous Space $G/H$

We consider the problem of constructing the fully gauged effective action in $2n$-dimensional space-time for Nambu-Goldstone bosons valued in a homogeneous space $G/H$, with the requirement that the action be a solution of the anomalous Ward identity and be invariant under the gauge transformations of $H$. We show that this can be done whenever the homotopy group $π_{2n}(G/H)$ is trivial, $G/H$ is reductive and $H$ is embedded in $G$ so as to be anomaly free, in particular if $H$ is an anomaly safe group. We construct the necessary generalization of the Bardeen counterterm and give explicit forms for the anomaly and the effective action. When $G/H$ is a symmetric space the counterterm and the anomaly decompose into a parity even and a parity odd part. In this case, for the parity even part of the action, one does not need the anomaly free embedding of $H$.
