Entanglement Entropy across the Lattice-Continuum Correspondence

This paper revisits standard calculations of free field entanglement entropy in light of the newly developed lattice-continuum correspondence. This correspondence prescribes an explicit method to extract an approximately continuum quantum field theory out of a fully regularized lattice theory. This prescription will here be extended to subregion algebras, and it will be shown how entropies of continuum boson and fermion theories can be computed by working purely with lattice quantities. This gives a clear picture of the origin of divergences in entanglement entropy while also presenting a concise and detailed recipe for calculating this important quantity in continuum theories.

Systematic Constructions of Fracton Theories

Fracton theories possess exponentially degenerate ground states, excitations with restricted mobility, and nontopological higher-form symmetries. This paper shows that such theories can be defined on arbitrary spatial lattices in three dimensions. The key element of this construction is a generalization of higher-form gauge theories to so-called $\mathfrak{F}_p$ gauge theories, in which gauge transformations of rank-$k$ fields are specified by rank-$(k - p)$ gauge parameters. The $\mathbb{Z}_2$ rank-two theory of type $\mathfrak{F}_2$, placed on a cubic lattice and coupled to scalar matter, is shown to have a topological phase exactly dual to the well-known X-cube model. Generalizations of this example yield novel fracton theories. In the continuum, the $\mathrm{U}(1)$ rank-two theory of type $\mathfrak{F}_2$ is shown to have a perturbatively gapless fracton regime that cannot be consistently interpreted as a tensor gauge theory of any kind. The compact scalar fields that naturally couple to this $\mathfrak{F}_2$ theory also show gapless fracton behavior; on a cubic lattice they have a conserved $\mathrm{U}(1)$ charge and dipole moment, but these particular charges are not necessarily conserved on more general lattices. The construction straightforwardly generalizes to $\mathfrak{F}_2$ theories of nonabelian rank-two gauge fields, giving first examples of pure nonabelian higher-rank theories.

The Lattice-Continuum Correspondence in the Ising Model

Starting from the operator algebra of the (1+1)D Ising model on a spatial lattice, this paper explicitly constructs a subalgebra of smooth operators that are natural candidates for continuum fields in the scaling limit. At the critical value of the transverse field, these smooth operators are analytically shown to reproduce the operator product expansions found in the Ising conformal field theory.

Disorder Operators in Chern-Simons-Fermion Theories

Building on the recent progress in solving Chern-Simons-matter theories in the planar limit, we compute the scaling dimensions of a large class of disorder ("monopole") operators in $U(N)_k$ Chern-Simons-fermion theories at all 't Hooft couplings $λ= N/k$. We find that the lowest-dimension operator of this sort has dimension $\frac23 k^{3/2}$. We comment on the implications of these results to analyzing maps of fermionic disorder operators under 3D bosonization.

Entanglement Entropy and Duality

Using the algebraic approach to entanglement entropy, we study several dual pairs of lattice theories and show how the entropy is completely preserved across each duality. Our main result is that a maximal algebra of observables in a region typically dualizes to a non-maximal algebra in a dual region. In particular, we show how the usual notion of tracing out external degrees of freedom dualizes to a tracing out coupled to an additional summation over superselection sectors. We briefly comment on possible extensions of our results to more intricate dualities, including holographic ones.

Entanglement in Weakly Coupled Lattice Gauge Theories

We present a direct lattice gauge theory computation that, without using dualities, demonstrates that the entanglement entropy of Yang-Mills theories with arbitrary gauge group $G$ contains a generic logarithmic term at sufficiently weak coupling $e$. In two spatial dimensions, for a region of linear size $r$, this term equals $\frac{1}{2} \dim(G) \log\left(e^2 r\right)$ and it dominates the universal part of the entanglement entropy. Such logarithmic terms arise from the entanglement of the softest mode in the entangling region with the environment. For Maxwell theory in two spatial dimensions, our results agree with those obtained by dualizing to a compact scalar with spontaneous symmetry breaking.

Quantum Mechanics in the Infrared

This paper presents an algebraic formulation of the renormalization group flow in quantum mechanics on flat target spaces. For any interacting quantum mechanical theory, the fixed point of this flow is a theory of classical probability, not a different effective quantum mechanics. Each energy eigenstate of the UV Hamiltonian flows to a probability distribution whose entropy is a natural diagnostic of quantum ergodicity of the original state. These conclusions are supported by various examples worked out in some detail.

Chern-Simons theory coupled to bifundamental scalars

We study the three-dimensional theory of two Chern-Simons gauge fields coupled to a scalar field in the bifundamental representation of the $SU(N)_k \times SU(M)_{-k}$ gauge group. At small but fixed $M \ll N$, this system approaches the theory of a Chern-Simons field coupled to fundamental matter, conjectured to be dual to a parity-violating version of Vasiliev's higher-spin gauge theory in $AdS_4$. At finite $M/N$ and large 't Hooft coupling this theory (or its SUSY version) is expected to be dual to an Einstein-like gravity. We show at two loops that this theory possesses a line of fixed points at any value of $M/N$. We also prove that turning on a finite but small $M/N$ gaps out the light states that Chern-Simons theory coupled to fundamental matter develops when placed on a torus. We also comment on the higher genus case.

Chern-Simons-Ghost Theories and de Sitter Space

We explore Chern-Simons theories coupled to fundamental ghost-like matter in the large $N$ limit at 't Hooft coupling $λ$. These theories have been conjectured to be holographically dual to parity-violating, asymptotically dS$_4$ universes with a tower of light higher-spin fields. On $\mathbb{R}^3$, to all orders in large-$N$ perturbation theory, we show that Chern-Simons-ghost theories are related to ordinary Chern-Simons-matter theories by mapping $N \rightarrow - N$ and keeping $λ$ fixed. Consequently, the bosonization duality of ordinary Chern-Simons-matter theories extends to a bosonization duality of Chern-Simons-ghost theories on $\mathbb R^3$. On $S^1 \times S^2$, in the small-$S^1$ limit, neither $N \rightarrow -N$ nor bosonization hold, as we show by extensively studying large-$N$ saddles of the theories with both ghost and ordinary matter. The partition functions we compute along the way can be viewed as pieces of the late-time Hartle-Hawking wavefunction for the bulk dS$_4$ gravity theories.

Notes on Entanglement in Abelian Gauge Theories

We streamline and generalize the recent progress in understanding entanglement between spatial regions in Abelian gauge theories. We provide an unambiguous and explicit prescription for calculating entanglement entropy in a $\mathbb Z_N$ lattice gauge theory. The main idea is that the lattice should be split into two disjoint regions of links separated by a buffer zone of plaquettes. We show that the previous calculations of the entanglement entropy can be realized as special cases of our setup, and we argue that the ambiguities reported in the previous work can be understood as basis choices for gauge-invariant operators living in the buffer zone. The proposed procedure applies to Abelian theories with matter and with continuous symmetry groups, both on the lattice and in the continuum.

Topology of Future Infinity in dS/CFT

The dS/CFT proposal of Anninos, Hartman, and Strominger relates quantum Vasiliev gravity in dS_4 to a large N vector theory in three dimensions. We use this proposal to compute the Wheeler-de Witt wave function of a universe having a particular topology at future infinity. This amplitude is found to grow rapidly with the topological complexity of the spatial slice; this is due to the plethora of states of the Chern-Simons theory that is needed to impose the singlet constraint. Various mechanisms are considered which might ameliorate this growth, but none seems completely satisfactory. We also study the topology dependence in Einstein gravity by computing the action of complex instantons; the wave function then depends on a choice of contour through the space of metrics. The most natural contour prescription leads to a growth with genus similar to the one found in Vasiliev theory, albeit with a different power of Newton's constant.

Connecting the Holographic and Wilsonian Renormalization Groups

Inspired by the AdS/CFT correspondence, we develop an explicit formal duality between the planar limit of a d-dimensional gauge theory and a classical field theory in a (d+1)-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. The key ingredient is the identification of fields in AdS with generalized Hubbard-Stratonovich transforms of single-trace couplings of the QFT. We show that the Wilsonian renormalization group flow of these transformed couplings matches the holographic (Hamilton-Jacobi) flow of bulk fields along the radial direction in AdS. This result allows one to outline an AdS/CFT dictionary that does not rely on string theory.

Holographic order parameter for charge fractionalization

Nonlocal order parameters for deconfinement, such as the entanglement entropy and Wilson loops, depend on spatial surfaces Σ. These observables are given holographically by the area of a certain bulk spatial surface Γ, ending on Σ. At finite charge density it is natural to consider the electric flux through the bulk surface Γ, in addition to its area. We show that this flux provides a refined order parameter that can distinguish `fractionalized' phases, with charged horizons, from what we term `cohesive' phases, with charged matter in the bulk. Fractionalization leads to a volume law for the flux through the surface, the flux for deconfined but cohesive phases is between a boundary and a volume law, while finite density confined phases have vanishing flux through the surface. We suggest two possible field theoretical interpretations for this order parameter. The first is as information extracted from the large N reduced density matrix associated to Σ. The second is as surface operators dual to polarized bulk `D-branes', carrying an electric dipole moment.
