Scattering Amplitudes: Celestial and Carrollian

Recent attempts at the construction of holography for asymptotically flat spacetimes have taken two different routes. Celestial holography, involving a two dimensional (2d) CFT dual to 4d Minkowski spacetime, has generated novel results in asymptotic symmetry and scattering amplitudes. A different formulation, using Carrollian CFTs, has been principally used to provide some evidence for flat holography in lower dimensions. Understanding of flatspace scattering has been lacking in the Carroll framework. In this work, using ideas from Celestial holography, we show that 3d Carrollian CFTs living on the null boundary of 4d flatspace can potentially compute bulk scattering amplitudes. 3d Carrollian conformal correlators have two different branches, one depending on the null time direction and one independent of it. We propose that it is the time-dependent branch that is related to bulk scattering. We construct an explicit field theoretic example of a free massless Carrollian scalar that realises some desired properties.

BMS Symmetry of Celestial OPE

In this paper we study the BMS symmetry of the celestial OPE of two positive helicity gravitons in Einstein theory in four dimensions. The celestial OPE is obtained by Mellin transforming the scattering amplitude in the (holomorphic) collinear limit. The collinear limit at leading order gives the singular term of the celestial OPE. We compute the first subleading correction to the OPE by analysing the four graviton scattering amplitude directly in Mellin space. The subleading term can be written as a linear combination of BMS descendants with the OPE coefficients determined by BMS algebra and the coefficient of the leading term in the OPE. This can be done by defining a suitable BMS primary state. We find that among the descendants, which appear at the first subleading order, there is one which is created by holomorphic supertranslation with simple pole on the celestial sphere.

Conformal properties of soft operators -- 2 : Use of null-states

Representations of the (Lorentz) conformal group with the soft operators as highest weight vectors have two universal properties, which we clearly state in this paper. Given a soft operator with a certain dimension and spin, the first property is about the existence of "(large) gauge transformation" that acts on the soft operator. The second property is the decoupling of (large) gauge-invariant null-states of the soft operators from the $S$-matrix elements. In each case, the decoupling equation has the form of zero field-strength condition with the soft operator as the (gauge) potential. Null-state decoupling effectively reduces the number of polarisation states of the soft particle and is crucial in deriving soft-theorems from the Ward identities of asymptotic symmetries. To the best of our understanding, these properties are not directly related to the Lorentz invariance of the $S$-matrix or the existence of asymptotic symmetries. We also verify that the results obtained from the decoupling of null-states are consistent with the leading and subleading soft-theorems with finite energy massive and massless particles in the external legs.

Conformal properties of soft-operators - 1 : Use of null-states

Soft-operators, loosely speaking, are operators which create or annihilate zero energy massless particles on the celestial sphere in Minkowski space. The Lorentz group acts on the celestial sphere by conformal transformation and the soft-operators transform as conformal primary operators of various dimension and spin. Working in space-time dimensions $D=4$ and $6$, we study some properties of the conformal representations with the (leading) soft photon and graviton as the highest weight vectors. Typically these representations contain null-vectors. We argue, from the $S$-matrix point of view, that infinite dimensional asymptotic symmetries and conformal invariance require us to set some of these null-vectors to zero. As a result, the corresponding soft-operator satisfies linear PDE on the celestial sphere. Curiously, these PDEs are equations of motion of Euclidean gauge theories on the celestial sphere with scalar gauge-invariance, i.e, the gauge parameter is a scalar field on the sphere. These are probably related to large $U(1)$ and supertranslation transformations at infinity. Now, the PDE satisfied by the soft-operator can be converted into PDE for the $S$-matrix elements with the insertion of the soft-operator. These equations can then be solved subject to appropriate boundary conditions on the celestial sphere, provided by conformal invariance. The solutions determine the soft $S$-matrix elements, for different helicities of the soft-particle, in terms of a single scalar function. This makes the Ward-identity for the asymptotic symmetry almost integrable. The result of the integration, which we are not able to perform completely, should of course be Weinberg's soft-theorem. Finally, we comment on the similarity between the roles played by null-states in the context of asymptotic symmetry and in string theory in relation to space-time gauge symmetry.

Modified celestial amplitude in Einstein gravity

In this paper we evaluate the modified celestial amplitude for gravitons and gluons, as defined in arXiv:1801.10171[hep-th]. We find that the modified (tree) amplitude is finite for gravitons in Einstein gravity. The modified amplitude behaves like correlation function of operators inserted at various points of null-infinity in the Minkowski space-time. Therefore, unlike the standard celestial amplitudes, these are three dimensional objects. We also show that this amplitude admits conformal soft factorization recently studied in the literature.

Black Hole Singularity, Generalized (Holographic) $c$-Theorem and Entanglement Negativity

In this paper we revisit the question that in what sense empty $AdS_{5}$ black brane geometry can be thought of as RG-flow. We do this by first constructing a holographic $c$-function using causal horizon in the black brane geometry. The UV value of the $c$-function is $a_{UV}$ and then it decreases monotonically to zero at the curvature singularity. Intuitively, the behavior of the $c$-function can be understood if we recognize that the dual CFT is in a thermal state and thermal states are effectively massive with a gap set by the temperature. In field theory, logarithmic entanglement negativity is an entanglement measure for mixed states. For example, in two dimensional CFTs on infinite line at finite temperature, the renormalized entanglement negativity of an interval has UV (Low- T) value $c_{UV}$ and IR (High-T) value zero. So this is a potential candidate for our $c$-function. In four dimensions we expect the same thing to hold on physical grounds. Now since the causal horizon goes behind the black brane horizon the holographic $c$-function is sensitive to the physics of the interior. Correspondingly the field theory $c$-function should also contain information about the interior. So our results suggest that high temperature (IR) expansion of the negativity (or any candidate $c$-function) may be a way to probe part of the physics near the singularity. Negativity at finite temperature depends on the full operator content of the theory and so perhaps this can be be done in specific cases only. The existence of this $c$-function in the bulk is an extreme example of the paradigm that space-time is built out of entanglement. In particular the fact that the $c$-function reaches zero at the curvature singularity correlates the two facts : loss of quantum entanglement in the IR field theory and the end of geometry in the bulk which in this case is the formation of curvature singularity.

Renormalized Entanglement Entropy on Cylinder

We develop a framework of calculating entanglement entropy for non-conformal field theories with the use of the dilaton effective action. To illustrate it, we locate a theory on a cylinder $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{S}^{2}$ and compute entanglement entropy of a cap-like region perturbatively with respect to the mass for a free massive scalar field. A renormalized entanglement entropy (REE) is proposed to regularize the ultraviolet divergence on the cylinder. We find that the REE decreases monotonically both in the small and large mass regions as the mass increases. We confirm all of these behaviors by the numerical calculations, which further shows the monotonic decrease of the REE in the entire renormalization group flow.

Nonlinear constraints on gravity from entanglement

Using the positivity of relative entropy arising from the Ryu-Takayanagi formula for spherical entangling surfaces, we obtain constraints at the nonlinear level for the gravitational dual. We calculate the Green's function necessary to compute the first order correction to the entangling surface and use this to find the relative entropy for non-constant stress tensors in a derivative expansion. We show that the Einstein value satisfies the positivity condition while the multi-dimensional parameter space away from it gets constrained.

RG Flow and Thermodynamics of Causal Horizons in AdS

Causal horizons in pure Poincare $AdS$ are Killing horizons generated by dilatation vector. Renormalization group (RG) flow breaks the dilatation symmetry and makes the horizons dynamical. We propose that the boundary RG flow is dual to the thermodynamics of the causal horizon. As a check of our proposal we show that the gravity dual of the boundary $c$-theorem is the second law of thermodynamics obeyed by causal horizons. The holographic $c$-function is the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy (density) of the dynamical causal horizon. We explicitly construct the $c$-function in a generic class of RG-flow geometries and show that it interpolates monotonically between the UV and IR central charges as a result of the second law.

RG Flow and Thermodynamics of Causal Horizons in Higher-Derivative AdS Gravity

In arXiv:1508.01343 [hep-th], one of the authors proposed that in AdS/CFT the gravity dual of the boundary $c$-theorem is the second law of thermodynamics satisfied by causal horizons in AdS and this was verified for Einstein gravity in the bulk. In this paper we verify this for higher derivative theories. We pick up theories for which an entropy expression satisfying the second law exists and show that the entropy density evaluated on the causal horizon in a RG flow geometry is a holographic c-function. We also prove that given a theory of gravity described by a local covariant action in the bulk a sufficient condition to ensure holographic c-theorem is that the second law of causal horizon thermodynamics be satisfied by the theory. This allows us to explicitly construct holographic c-function in a theory where there is curvature coupling between gravity and matter and standard null energy condition cannot be defined although second law is known to hold. Based on the duality between c-theorem and the second law of causal horizon thermodynamics proposed in arXiv:1508.01343 [hep-th] and the supporting calculations of this paper we conjecture that every Unitary higher derivative theory of gravity in AdS satisfies the second law of causal horizon thermodynamics. If this is not true then c-theorem will be violated in a unitary Lorentz invariant field theory.

Chern-Simons theory coupled to bifundamental scalars

We study the three-dimensional theory of two Chern-Simons gauge fields coupled to a scalar field in the bifundamental representation of the $SU(N)_k \times SU(M)_{-k}$ gauge group. At small but fixed $M \ll N$, this system approaches the theory of a Chern-Simons field coupled to fundamental matter, conjectured to be dual to a parity-violating version of Vasiliev's higher-spin gauge theory in $AdS_4$. At finite $M/N$ and large 't Hooft coupling this theory (or its SUSY version) is expected to be dual to an Einstein-like gravity. We show at two loops that this theory possesses a line of fixed points at any value of $M/N$. We also prove that turning on a finite but small $M/N$ gaps out the light states that Chern-Simons theory coupled to fundamental matter develops when placed on a torus. We also comment on the higher genus case.

Constraining gravity using entanglement in AdS/CFT

We investigate constraints imposed by entanglement on gravity in the context of holography. First, by demanding that relative entropy is positive and using the Ryu-Takayanagi entropy functional, we find certain constraints at a nonlinear level for the dual gravity. Second, by considering Gauss-Bonnet gravity, we show that for a class of small perturbations around the vacuum state, the positivity of the two point function of the field theory stress tensor guarantees the positivity of the relative entropy. Further, if we impose that the entangling surface closes off smoothly in the bulk interior, we find restrictions on the coupling constant in Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We also give an example of an anisotropic excited state in an unstable phase with broken conformal invariance which leads to a negative relative entropy.

Note On The Dilaton Effective Action And Entanglement Entropy

In this note we do the analysis of entanglement entropy more carefully when the non-conformal theory flows to a non-trivial IR fixed point. In particular we emphasize the role of the trace of the energy-momentum tensor in these calculations. We also compare the current technique for evaluating the entanglement entropy, particularly the Green's function method for gaussian theories, with the dilaton effective action approach and show that they compute identical quantities. As a result of this, the dilaton effective action approach can be thought of as an extension of Green's function technique to interacting theories.

Trace Anomaly Matching and Exact Results For Entanglement Entropy

Following the ideas developed by Komargodski and Schwimmer in arXiv:1107.3987 and arXiv:1112.4538, we argue that the IR dilaton effective action on the cone computes the entanglement entropy of an even dimensional non-conformal field theory interpolating between a UV and an IR fixed point. We restrict our attention to theories which flow to trivial IR fixed point. We get exact non-perturbative results for the coefficients of the logarithmically divergent term of the entanglement entropy in these field theories in arbitrary even dimensions. The results match precisely with the weak coupling results available in the literature and also with the strong coupling results obtained via holography. We also write the universal terms for field theories which interpolate between a scale invariant but not conformally invariant UV fixed point and a trivial IR fixed point.

Topology of Future Infinity in dS/CFT

The dS/CFT proposal of Anninos, Hartman, and Strominger relates quantum Vasiliev gravity in dS_4 to a large N vector theory in three dimensions. We use this proposal to compute the Wheeler-de Witt wave function of a universe having a particular topology at future infinity. This amplitude is found to grow rapidly with the topological complexity of the spatial slice; this is due to the plethora of states of the Chern-Simons theory that is needed to impose the singlet constraint. Various mechanisms are considered which might ameliorate this growth, but none seems completely satisfactory. We also study the topology dependence in Einstein gravity by computing the action of complex instantons; the wave function then depends on a choice of contour through the space of metrics. The most natural contour prescription leads to a growth with genus similar to the one found in Vasiliev theory, albeit with a different power of Newton's constant.

Smoothed Transitions in Higher Spin AdS Gravity

We consider CFTs conjectured to be dual to higher spin theories of gravity in AdS_3 and AdS_4. Two dimensional CFTs with W_N symmetry are considered in the lambda=0 (k --> infinity) limit, where they are conjectured to be described by continuous orbifolds. The torus partition function is computed, using reasonable assumptions, and equals that of a free field theory. We find no phase transition at temperatures of order one; the usual Hawking-Page phase transition is removed by the highly degenerate light states associated with conical defect states in the bulk. Three dimensional Chern-Simons-matter CFTs with vector-like matter are considered on T^3, where the dynamics is described by an effective theory for the eigenvalues of the holonomies. Likewise, we find no evidence for a Hawking-Page phase transition at large level k.

Logarithmic Corrections to N=4 and N=8 Black Hole Entropy: A One Loop Test of Quantum Gravity

We compute logarithmic corrections to the entropy of supersymmetric extremal black holes in N=4 and N=8 supersymmetric string theories and find results in perfect agreement with the microscopic results. In particular these logarithmic corrections vanish for quarter BPS black holes in N=4 supersymmetric theories, but has a finite coefficient for 1/8 BPS black holes in the N=8 supersymmetric theory. On the macroscopic side these computations require evaluating the one loop determinant of massless fields around the near horizon geometry, and include, in particular, contributions from dynamical four dimensional gravitons propagating in the loop. Thus our analysis provides a test of one loop quantum gravity corrections to the black hole entropy, or equivalently of the AdS_2/CFT_1 correspondence. We also extend our analysis to N=2 supersymmetric STU model and make a prediction for the logarithmic correction to the black hole entropy in that theory.

Wess-Zumino Consistency Condition for Entanglement Entropy

In this brief note, we consider the variation of the entanglement entropy of a region as the shape of the entangling surface is changed. We show that the variation satisfies a Wess-Zumino like integrability condition in field theories which can be consistently coupled to gravity. In this case the "anomaly" is localized on the entangling surface. The solution of the integrability condition should give all the nontrivial finite local terms which can appear in the variation of the entanglement entropy.

Duality covariant variables for STU-model in presence of non-holomorphic corrections

It is known that non-holomorphic corrections are necessary in order to get duality invariant free energy and entropy function. However the present methods of incorporating non-holomorphic corrections are in conflict with special geometry properties of moduli space. The moduli fields do not transform in duality covariant way and their duality transformation also involves the graviphoton field strength. In the present note we construct duality covariant moduli fields for STU-model perturbatively in powers of the graviphoton field strength and demonstrated their existence upto second order.

Logarithmic Corrections to Extremal Black Hole Entropy from Quantum Entropy Function

We evaluate the one loop determinant of matter multiplet fields of N=4 supergravity in the near horizon geometry of quarter BPS black holes, and use it to calculate logarithmic corrections to the entropy of these black holes using the quantum entropy function formalism. We show that even though individual fields give non-vanishing logarithmic contribution to the entropy, the net contribution from all the fields in the matter multiplet vanishes. Thus logarithmic corrections to the entropy of quarter BPS black holes, if present, must be independent of the number of matter multiplet fields in the theory. This is consistent with the microscopic results. During our analysis we also determine the complete spectrum of small fluctuations of matter multiplet fields in the near horizon geometry.

Supersymmetry, Localization and Quantum Entropy Function

AdS_2/CFT_1 correspondence leads to a prescription for computing the degeneracy of black hole states in terms of path integral over string fields living on the near horizon geometry of the black hole. In this paper we make use of the enhanced supersymmetries of the near horizon geometry and localization techniques to argue that the path integral receives contribution only from a special class of string field configurations which are invariant under a subgroup of the supersymmetry transformations. We identify saddle points which are invariant under this subgroup. We also use our analysis to show that the integration over infinite number of zero modes generated by the asymptotic symmetries of AdS_2 generate a finite contribution to the path integral.
