Coabelian ideals in $\mathbb{N}$-graded Lie algebras and applications to right angled Artin Lie algebras

We consider homological finiteness properties $FP_n$ of certain $\mathbb{N}$-graded Lie algebras. After proving some general results, see Theorem A, Corollary B and Corollary C, we concentrate on a family that can be considered as the Lie algebra version of the generalized Bestvina-Brady groups associated to a graph $Γ$. We prove that the homological finiteness properties of these Lie algebras can be determined in terms of the graph in the same way as in the group case. In the last version we have corrected some missprints, in particular the statement of Theorem D (from $n-1$-acyclicity to $n-1 - |w|$-acyclicity).

Higher dimensional algebraic fiberings for pro-$p$ groups

We prove some conditions for higher dimensional algebraic fibering of pro-$p$ group extensions and we establish corollaries about incoherence of pro-$p$ groups. In particular, if $G = K \rtimes Γ$ is a pro-$p$ group, $Γ$ a finitely generated free pro-$p$ group with $d(Γ) \geq 2$, $K$ a finitely presented pro-$p$ group with $N$ a normal pro-$p$ subgroup of $K$ such that $K/ N \simeq \mathbb{Z}_p$ and $N$ not finitely generated as a pro-$p$ group, then $G$ is incoherent (in the category of pro-$p$ groups). Furthermore we show that if $K$ is a free pro-$p$ group with $d(K) = 2$ then either $Aut_0(K)$ is incoherent (in the category of pro-$p$ groups) or there is a finitely presented pro-$p$ group, without non-procyclic free pro-$p$ subgroups, that has a metabelian pro-$p$ quotient that is not finitely presented i.e. a pro-$p$ version of a result of Bieri-Strebel does not hold.

Bass-Serre theory for Lie algebras: a homological approach

We develop a version of the Bass-Serre theory for Lie algebras (over a field $k$) via a homological approach. We define the notion of fundamental Lie algebra of a graph of Lie algebras and show that this construction yields Mayer-Vietoris sequences. We extend some well known results in group theory to $\mathbb{N}$-graded Lie algebras: for example, we show that one relator $\mathbb{N}$-graded Lie algebras are iterated HNN extensions with free bases which can be used for cohomology computations and apply the Mayer-Vietoris sequence to give some results about coherence of Lie algebras.

Volume gradients and homology in towers of residually-free groups

We study the asymptotic growth of homology groups and the cellular volume of classifying spaces as one passes to normal subgroups $G_n<G$ of increasing finite index in a fixed finitely generated group $G$, assuming $\bigcap_n G_n =1$. We focus in particular on finitely presented residually free groups, calculating their $\ell_2$ betti numbers, rank gradient and asymptotic deficiency. If $G$ is a limit group and $K$ is any field, then for all $j\ge 1$ the limit of $\dim H_j(G_n,K)/[G,G_n]$ as $n\to\infty$ exists and is zero except for $j=1$, where it equals $-χ(G)$. We prove a homotopical version of this theorem in which the dimension of $\dim H_j(G_n,K)$ is replaced by the minimal number of $j$-cells in a $K(G_n,1)$; this includes a calculation of the rank gradient and the asymptotic deficiency of $G$. Both the homological and homotopical versions are special cases of general results about the fundamental groups of graphs of {\em{slow}} groups. We prove that if a residually free group $G$ is of type $\rm{FP}_m$ but not of type $\rm{FP}_{\infty}$, then there exists an exhausting filtration by normal subgroups of finite index $G_n$ so that $\lim_n \dim H_j (G_n, K) / [G : G_n] = 0 \hbox{for} j \leq m$. If $G$ is of type $\rm{FP}_{\infty}$, then the limit exists in all dimensions and we calculate it.

On pro-$p$ analogues of limit groups via extensions of centralizers

We begin a study of a pro-$p$ analogue of limit groups via extensions of centralizers and call $\mathcal{L}$ this new class of pro-$p$ groups. We show that the pro-$p$ groups of $\mathcal{L}$ have finite cohomological dimension, type $FP_{\infty}$ and non-positive Euler characteristic. Among the group theoretic properties it is proved that they are free-by-(torsion-free poly -procyclic) and if non-abelian do not have a finitely generated non-trivial normal subgroup of infinite index. Furthermore it is shown that every 2 generated pro-$p$ group in the class $\mathcal{L}$ is either free pro-$p$ or abelian.
