Coabelian ideals in $\mathbb{N}$-graded Lie algebras and applications to right angled Artin Lie algebras

We consider homological finiteness properties $FP_n$ of certain $\mathbb{N}$-graded Lie algebras. After proving some general results, see Theorem A, Corollary B and Corollary C, we concentrate on a family that can be considered as the Lie algebra version of the generalized Bestvina-Brady groups associated to a graph $Γ$. We prove that the homological finiteness properties of these Lie algebras can be determined in terms of the graph in the same way as in the group case. In the last version we have corrected some missprints, in particular the statement of Theorem D (from $n-1$-acyclicity to $n-1 - |w|$-acyclicity).

Bass-Serre theory for Lie algebras: a homological approach

We develop a version of the Bass-Serre theory for Lie algebras (over a field $k$) via a homological approach. We define the notion of fundamental Lie algebra of a graph of Lie algebras and show that this construction yields Mayer-Vietoris sequences. We extend some well known results in group theory to $\mathbb{N}$-graded Lie algebras: for example, we show that one relator $\mathbb{N}$-graded Lie algebras are iterated HNN extensions with free bases which can be used for cohomology computations and apply the Mayer-Vietoris sequence to give some results about coherence of Lie algebras.

HNN extensions and stackable groups

Stackability for finitely presented groups consists of a dynamical system that iteratively moves paths into a maximal tree in the Cayley graph. Combining with formal language theoretic restrictions yields auto- or algorithmic stackability, which implies solvability of the word problem. In this paper we give two new characterizations of the stackable property for groups, and use these to show that every HNN extension of a stackable group is stackable. We apply this to exhibit a wide range of Dehn functions that are admitted by stackable and autostackable groups, as well as an example of a stackable group with unsolvable word problem. We use similar methods to show that there exist finitely presented metabelian groups that are non-constructible but admit an autostackable structure.

Euler classes and Bredon cohomology for groups with restricted families of finite subgroups

We explore some of the special features with respect to Bredon cohomology of groups having all its finite subgroups either nilpotent or p-groups or cyclic p-groups. We get some results on dimensions and also a formula for the equivariant Euler class for certain groups. We consider the generalization for Bredon cohomology of the properties of being duality or Poincaré duality and study their behavior under p-power index extensions with coefficients in a field of characteristic p.

Isomorphisms of Brin-Higman-Thompson groups

Let $m, m', r, r',t, t'$ be positive integers with $r, r' \ge 2$. Let $L_r$ denote the ring that is universal with an invertible $1 \times r$ matrix. Let $M_m(L_r^{\otimes t})$ denote the ring of $m \times m$ matrices over the tensor product of $t$ copies of $L_r$. In a natural way, $M_m(L_r^{\otimes t})$ is a partially ordered ring with involution. Let $PU_m(L_r^{\otimes t})$ denote the group of positive unitary elements. We show that $PU_m(L_r^{\otimes t})$ is isomorphic to the Brin-Higman-Thompson group $t V_{r,m}$; the case $t =1$ was found by Pardo, that is, $PU_m(L_r)$ is isomorphic to the Higman-Thompson group $V_{r,m}$. We survey arguments of Abrams, Ánh, Bleak, Brin, Higman, Lanoue, Pardo, and Thompson that prove that $t' V_{r',m'} \cong tV_{r,m} $ if and only if $r' = r$, $t'=t$ and $ \gcd(m',r'-1) = \gcd(m,r-1)$ (if and only if $M_{m'}(L_{r'}^{\otimes t'})$ and $M_m(L_r^{\otimes t})$ are isomorphic as partially ordered rings with involution).

Subgroup posets, Bredon cohomology and equivariant Euler characteristics

For a discrete group $Γ$ satisfying some finiteness conditions we give a Bredon projective resolution of the trivial module in terms of projective covers of the chain complex associated to certain posets of subgroups. We use this to give new results on dimensions of $Eγ$ and to reprove that for virtually solvable groups, $\underline{\cd}Γ=\vcdΓ$. We also deduce a formula to compute the Euler class of $Eγ$ for $Γ$ virtually solvable of type $\FP_\infty$ and use it to compute orbifold Euler characteristics.
