CPA-lasing associated with the quasibound states in the continuum in asymmetric non-Hermitian structures

Non-Hermitian photonic systems with loss and gain attract much attention due to their exceptional abilities in molding the flow of light. Introducing asymmetry to the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system with perfectly balanced loss and gain, we reveal the mechanism of transition from the quasibound state in the continuum (quasi-BIC) to the simultaneous coherent perfect absorption (CPA) and lasing in a layered structure comprising epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) media. Two types of asymmetry (geometric and non-Hermitian) are analyzed with the scattering matrix technique. The effect of the CPA-lasing associated with the quasi-BIC is characterized with the unusual linear dependence of the quality factor on the inverse of asymmetry parameter. Moreover, the counter-intuitive loss-induced-lasing-like behavior is found at the CPA-lasing point under the non-Hermitian asymmetry. The reported features of non-Hermitian structures are perspective for sensing and lasing applications.

Nonlinear interaction of two trapped-mode resonances in a bilayer fish-scale metamaterial

We report on a bistable light transmission through a bilayer "fish-scale" (meander-line) metamaterial. It is demonstrated that an all-optical switching may be achieved nearly the frequency of the high-quality-factor Fano-shaped trapped-mode resonance excitation. The nonlinear interaction of two closely spaced trapped-mode resonances in the bilayer structure composed with a Kerr-type nonlinear dielectric slab is analyzed in both frequency and time domains. It is demonstrated that these two resonances react differently on the applied intense light which leads to destination of a multistable transmission.

Three-dimensional coherence matrix and degree of polarization

Inspecting three-dimensional partially polarized light fields we show that there is no unambiguous correspondence between the three-dimensional field and coherence matrix (or light beam tensor). Therefore, it is needed to clarify the definition of unpolarized light. We believe that unpolarized field should be treated as light of equiprobable polarizations similar to the case of two-dimensional light. Then degree of polarization bridges two definitions of the three-dimensional degrees of polarization known in literature. We reveal that only 6 Stokes parameters are sufficient to describe the coherence matrix. All these parameters can be retrieved from the in-plane measurements of two-dimensional coherence matrices.

Asymmetric transmission in planar chiral split-ring metamaterials: Microscopic Lorentz-theory approach

The electronic Lorentz theory is employed to determine the electromagnetic response of planar split-ring metamaterials. Starting from the dynamics of individual free carriers, the effective permittivity tensor of the metamaterial is calculated. Whenever the split ring lacks in-plane mirror symmetry, the corresponding permittivity tensor has a crystallographic structure of an elliptically dichroic medium, and the metamaterial exhibits optical properties of planar chiral structures. Its transmission spectra are different for right-handed vs. left-handed circular polarization of the incident wave, so the structure changes its transmittance when the direction of incidence is reversed. The magnitude of this change is shown to be related to the geometric parameters of the split ring. The proposed approach can be straightforwardly generalized to a wide variety of metal-dielectric metamaterial geometries.
