A Topological Approach to Mapping Space Signatures

A common approach for describing classes of functions and probability measures on a topological space $\mathcal{X}$ is to construct a suitable map $Φ$ from $\mathcal{X}$ into a vector space, where linear methods can be applied to address both problems. The case where $\mathcal{X}$ is a space of paths $[0,1] \to \mathbb{R}^n$ and $Φ$ is the path signature map has received much attention in stochastic analysis and related fields. In this article we develop a generalized $Φ$ for the case where $\mathcal{X}$ is a space of maps $[0,1]^d \to \mathbb{R}^n$ for any $d \in \mathbb{N}$, and show that the map $Φ$ generalizes many of the desirable algebraic and analytic properties of the path signature to $d \ge 2$. The key ingredient to our approach is topological; in particular, our starting point is a generalisation of K-T Chen's path space cochain construction to the setting of cubical mapping spaces.

Capturing Graphs with Hypo-Elliptic Diffusions

Convolutional layers within graph neural networks operate by aggregating information about local neighbourhood structures; one common way to encode such substructures is through random walks. The distribution of these random walks evolves according to a diffusion equation defined using the graph Laplacian. We extend this approach by leveraging classic mathematical results about hypo-elliptic diffusions. This results in a novel tensor-valued graph operator, which we call the hypo-elliptic graph Laplacian. We provide theoretical guarantees and efficient low-rank approximation algorithms. In particular, this gives a structured approach to capture long-range dependencies on graphs that is robust to pooling. Besides the attractive theoretical properties, our experiments show that this method competes with graph transformers on datasets requiring long-range reasoning but scales only linearly in the number of edges as opposed to quadratically in nodes.

Path Signatures on Lie Groups

Path signatures are powerful nonparametric tools for time series analysis, shown to form a universal and characteristic feature map for Euclidean valued time series data. We lift the theory of path signatures to the setting of Lie group valued time series, adapting these tools for time series with underlying geometric constraints. We prove that this generalized path signature is universal and characteristic. To demonstrate universality, we analyze the human action recognition problem in computer vision, using $SO(3)$ representations for the time series, providing comparable performance to other shallow learning approaches, while offering an easily interpretable feature set. We also provide a two-sample hypothesis test for Lie group-valued random walks to illustrate its characteristic property. Finally we provide algorithms and a Julia implementation of these methods.

Structure of vortex-bound states in spin-singlet chiral superconductors

We investigate the structure of vortex-bound states in spin-singlet chiral superconductors with ($d_{x^2-y^2} \pm i d_{xy}$)-wave and ($d_{xz} \pm id_{yz}$)-wave pairing symmetries. It is found that vortices in the ($d_{xz} \pm id_{yz}$)-wave state bind zero-energy states which are dispersionless along the vortex line, forming a doubly degenerate Majorana flat band. Vortex-bound states of ($d_{x^2-y^2} \pm i d_{xy}$)-wave superconductors, on the other hand, exist only at finite energy. Using exact diagonalization and analytical solutions of tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonians, we compute the energy spectrum of the vortex-bound states and the local density of states around the vortex and antivortex cores. We find that the tunneling conductance peak of the vortex is considerably broader than that of the antivortex. This difference can be used as a direct signature of the chiral order parameter symmetry.
