A noncommutative Sierpinski Gasket

A quantized version of the Sierpinski gasket is proposed, on purely topological grounds, as a $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{A}_\infty$ with a suitable form of self-similarity. Several properties of $\mathcal{A}_\infty$ are studied, in particular its nuclearity, the structure of ideals as well as the description of irreducible representations and extremal traces. A harmonic structure is introduced, giving rise to a self-similar Dirichlet form $\mathcal{E}$. A spectral triple is also constructed, extending one already known for the classical gasket, from which $\mathcal{E}$ can be reconstructed. Moreover we show that $\mathcal{A}_\infty$ is a compact quantum metric space.

Spectral triples on irreversible $C^*$-dynamical systems

Given a spectral triple on a $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal A$ together with a unital injective endomorphism $α$, the problem of defining a suitable crossed product $C^*$-algebra endowed with a spectral triple is addressed. The proposed construction is mainly based on the works of Cuntz and of Hawkins, Skalski, White and Zacharias, and on our previous papers. The embedding of $α(\mathcal A)$ in $\mathcal A$ can be considered as the dual form of a covering projection between noncommutative spaces. A main assumption is the expansiveness of the endomorphism, which takes the form of the local isometricity of the covering projection and is expressed via the compatibility of the Lip-norms on $\mathcal A$ and $α(\mathcal A)$.

Spectral triples for noncommutative solenoidal spaces from self-coverings

Examples of noncommutative self-coverings are described, and spectral triples on the base space are extended to spectral triples on the inductive family of coverings, in such a way that the covering projections are locally isometric. Such triples are shown to converge, in a suitable sense, to a semifinite spectral triple on the direct limit of the tower of coverings, which we call noncommutative solenoidal space. Some of the self-coverings described here are given by the inclusion of the fixed point algebra in a C$^*$-algebra acted upon by a finite abelian group. In all the examples treated here, the noncommutative solenoidal spaces have the same metric dimension and volume as on the base space, but are not quantum compact metric spaces, namely the pseudo-metric induced by the spectral triple does not produce the weak$^*$ topology on the state space.

Integrals and Potentials of Differential 1-forms on the Sierpinski Gasket

We provide a definition of integral, along paths in the Sierpinski gasket K, for differential smooth 1-forms associated to the standard Dirichlet form K. We show how this tool can be used to study the potential theory on K. In particular, we prove: i) a de Rham reconstruction of a 1-form from its periods around lacunas in K; ii) a Hodge decomposition of 1-forms with respect to the Hilbertian energy norm; iii) the existence of potentials of smooth 1-forms on a suitable covering space of K. We finally show that this framework provides versions of the de Rham duality theorem for the fractal K.

Bose Einstein condensation on inhomogeneous amenable graphs

We investigate the Bose-Einstein Condensation on nonhomogeneous amenable networks for the model describing arrays of Josephson junctions. The resulting topological model, whose Hamiltonian is the pure hopping one given by the opposite of the adjacency operator, has also a mathematical interest in itself. We show that for the nonhomogeneous networks like the comb graphs, particles condensate in momentum and configuration space as well. In this case different properties of the network, of geometric and probabilistic nature, such as the volume growth, the shape of the ground state, and the transience, all play a role in the condensation phenomena. The situation is quite different for homogeneous networks where just one of these parameters, e.g. the volume growth, is enough to determine the appearance of the condensation.

Modular theory for the von Neumann algebras of Local Quantum Physics

In the first part, the second quantization procedure and the free Bosonic scalar field will be introduced, and the axioms for quantum fields and nets of observable algebras will be discussed. The second part is mainly devoted to an illustration of the Bisognano-Wichmann theorem for Wightman fields and in the algebraic setting, with a discussion on the physical meaning of this result. In the third part some reconstruction theorems based on modular groups will be described, in particular the possibility of constructing an action of the symmetry group of a given theory via modular groups, and the construction of free field algebras via representations of the symmetry group.

A Converse Hawking-Unruh Effect and dS^2/CFT Correspondance

Given a local quantum field theory net A on the de Sitter spacetime dS^d, where geodesic observers are thermalized at Gibbons-Hawking temperature, we look for observers that feel to be in a ground state, i.e. particle evolutions with positive generator, providing a sort of converse to the Hawking-Unruh effect. Such positive energy evolutions always exist as noncommutative flows, but have only a partial geometric meaning, yet they map localized observables into localized observables. We characterize the local conformal nets on dS^d. Only in this case our positive energy evolutions have a complete geometrical meaning. We show that each net has a unique maximal expected conformal subnet, where our evolutions are thus geometrical. In the two-dimensional case, we construct a holographic one-to-one correspondence between local nets A on dS^2 and local conformal non-isotonic families (pseudonets) B on S^1. The pseudonet B gives rise to two local conformal nets B(+/-) on S^1, that correspond to the H(+/-)-horizon components of A, and to the chiral components of the maximal conformal subnet of A. In particular, A is holographically reconstructed by a single horizon component, namely the pseudonet is a net, iff the translations on H(+/-) have positive energy and the translations on H(-/+) are trivial. This is the case iff the one-parameter unitary group implementing rotations on dS^2 has positive/negative generator.

Modular localization and Wigner particles

We propose a framework for the free field construction of algebras of local observables which uses as an input the Bisognano-Wichmann relations and a representation of the Poincare' group on the one-particle Hilbert space. The abstract real Hilbert subspace version of the Tomita-Takesaki theory enables us to bypass some limitations of the Wigner formalism by introducing an intrinsic spacetime localization. Our approach works also for continuous spin representations to which we associate a net of von Neumann algebras on spacelike cones with the Reeh-Schlieder property. The positivity of the energy in the representation turns out to be equivalent to the isotony of the net, in the spirit of Borchers theorem. Our procedure extends to other spacetimes homogeneous under a group of geometric transformations as in the case of conformal symmetries and de Sitter spacetime.

Noncommutative Riemann integration and and Novikov-Shubin invariants for open manifolds

Given a C*-algebra A with a semicontinuous semifinite trace tau acting on the Hilbert space H, we define the family R of bounded Riemann measurable elements w.r.t. tau as a suitable closure, a la Dedekind, of A, in analogy with one of the classical characterizations of Riemann measurable functions, and show that R is a C*-algebra, and tau extends to a semicontinuous semifinite trace on R. Then, unbounded Riemann measurable operators are defined as the closed operators on H which are affiliated to A'' and can be approximated in measure by operators in R, in analogy with unbounded Riemann integration. Unbounded Riemann measurable operators form a tau-a.e. bimodule on R, denoted by R^, and such bimodule contains the functional calculi of selfadjoint elements of R under unbounded Riemann measurable functions. Besides, tau extends to a bimodule trace on R^. Type II_1 singular traces for C*-algebras can be defined on the bimodule of unbounded Riemann-measurable operators. Noncommutative Riemann integration, and singular traces for C*-algebras, are then used to define Novikov-Shubin numbers for amenable open manifolds, show their invariance under quasi-isometries, and prove that they are (noncommutative) asymptotic dimensions.

Extensions of Conformal Nets and Superselection Structures

Starting with a conformal Quantum Field Theory on the real line, we show that the dual net is still conformal with respect to a new representation of the Moebius group. We infer from this that every conformal net is normal and conormal, namely the local von Neumann algebra associated with an interval coincides with its double relative commutant inside the local von Neumann algebra associated with any larger interval. The net and the dual net give together rise to an infinite dimensional symmetry group, of which we study a class of positive energy irreducible representations. We mention how superselsection sectors extend to the dual net and we illustrate by examples how, in general, this process generates solitonic sectors. We describe the free theories associated with the lowest weight n representations of PSL(2,R), showing that they violate 3-regularity for n>2. When n>1, we obtain examples of non Moebius-covariant sectors of a 3-regular (non 4-regular) net.
