Numerical study of the twist-3 asymmetry $A_{LT}$ in single-inclusive electron-nucleon and proton-proton collisions

We provide the first rigorous numerical analysis of the longitudinal-transverse double-spin asymmetry $A_{LT}$ in electron-nucleon and proton-proton collisions for the case where only a single pion, jet, or photon is detected in the final state. Given recent extractions of certain, previously unknown, non-perturbative functions, we are able to compute contributions from all terms relevant for $A_{LT}$ and make realistic predictions for the observable at Jefferson Lab (JLab) 12 GeV, COMPASS, the future Electron-Ion Collider, and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. We also compare our results to a JLab 6 GeV measurement, which are the only data available for this type of reaction. The twist-3 nature of $A_{LT}$ makes it a potentially fruitful avenue to probe quark-gluon-quark correlations in hadrons as well as provide insights into dynamical quark mass generation in QCD.

First global QCD analysis of the TMD $\boldsymbol{g_{1T}}$ from semi-inclusive DIS data

The worm-gear transverse momentum dependent (TMD) function $g_{1T}$ is one of the eight leading-twist TMDs and has the probabilistic interpretation of finding a longitudinally polarized quark inside a transversely polarized hadron. In this work, we present the first simultaneous extraction of $g_{1T}$ from all the available experimental measurements. The study involves the analysis of COMPASS, HERMES, and Jefferson Lab data on semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering using Monte Carlo techniques. We also compare $g_{1T}$ obtained from this experimental data with different theoretical approaches, such as the large-$N_c$ approximation, the Wandzura-Wilczek-type approximation, and lattice QCD.

Updated QCD global analysis of single transverse-spin asymmetries I: Extracting $\tilde{H}$, and the role of the Soffer bound and lattice QCD

We present an update to the QCD global analysis of single transverse-spin asymmetries presented in Cammarota, et al., PRD 102, 054002 (2020) (JAM3D-20). JAM3D-20 simultaneously included transverse momentum dependent and collinear twist-3 observables, both of which are sensitive to quark-gluon-quark correlations in hadrons. In this study we extract for the first time the twist-3 chiral odd fragmentation function $\tilde{H}$ by incorporating the $\sinϕ_s$ modulation data from SIDIS along with its contribution to the single transverse-spin asymmetry in pion production from proton-proton collisions. We also explore the impact of lattice QCD tensor charge calculations and the Soffer bound on our global analysis. We find that both constraints can be accommodated within our results, with $\tilde{H}$ playing a key role in maintaining agreement with the data from proton-proton collisions.

Origin of single transverse-spin asymmetries in high-energy collisions

In this paper we perform the first simultaneous QCD global analysis of data from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan, $e^+e^-$ annihilation into hadron pairs, and proton-proton collisions. Consequently, we are able to extract a universal set of non-perturbative functions that describes the observed asymmetries in these reactions. The outcome of our analysis indicates single transverse-spin asymmetries in high-energy collisions have a common origin. Furthermore, we achieve the first phenomenological agreement with lattice QCD on the up and down quark tensor charges.

Helicity Evolution at Small x: Summary of Recent Developments

We construct small-$x$ evolution equations which can be used to calculate quark and anti-quark helicity TMDs and PDFs, along with the $g_1$ structure function. These evolution equations resum powers of $α_s \, \ln^2 (1/x)$ in the polarization-dependent evolution along with the powers of $α_s \, \ln (1/x)$ in the unpolarized evolution which includes saturation effects. The equations are written in an operator form in terms of polarization-dependent Wilson line-like operators. While the equations do not close in general, they become closed and self-contained systems of non-linear equations in the large-$N_c$ and large-$N_c \, \& \, N_f$ limits. We construct a numerical solution of the helicity evolution equations in the large-$N_c$ limit. Employing the extracted intercept, we are able to predict directly from theory the behavior of the quark helicity PDFs at small $x$, which should have important phenomenological consequences. We also give an estimate of how much of the proton's spin may be at small $x$ and what impact this has on the so-called "spin crisis." Based on JHEP 1601 (2016) 072 (arXiv:1511.06737), arXiv:1610.06197 and arXiv:1610.06188.

As a cross-check, in the ladder approximation, our equations map onto the same ladder limit of the infrared evolution equations for $g_1$ structure function derived previously by Bartels, Ermolaev and Ryskin.

Operator Constraints for Twist-3 Functions and Lorentz Invariance Properties of Twist-3 Observables

We investigate the behavior under Lorentz tranformations of perturbative coefficient functions in a collinear twist-3 formalism relevant for high-energy observables including transverse polarization of hadrons. We argue that those perturbative coefficient functions can, {\it a priori}, acquire quite different yet Lorentz-invariant forms in various frames. This somewhat surprising difference can be traced back to a general dependence of the perturbative coefficient functions on lightcone vectors which are introduced by the twist-3 factorization formulae and which are frame-dependent. One can remove this spurious frame dependence by invoking so-called Lorentz invariance relations (LIRs) between twist-3 parton correlation functions. Some of those relations for twist-3 distribution functions were discussed in the literature before. In this paper we derive the corresponding LIRs for twist-3 fragmentation functions. We explicitly demonstrate that these LIRs remove the lightcone vector dependence by considering transverse spin observables in the single-inclusive production of hadrons in lepton-nucleon collisions, $\ell N\to hX$. With the LIRs in hand, we also show that twist-3 observables in general can be written solely in terms of three-parton correlation functions.

Twist-3 effect from the longitudinally polarized proton for $A_{LT}$ in hadron production from $pp$ collisions

We compute the contribution from the longitudinally polarized proton to the twist-3 double-spin asymmetry $A_{LT}$ in inclusive (light) hadron production from proton-proton collisions,i.e., $p^\uparrow \vec{p}\to h\,X$. We show that using the relevant QCD equation-of-motion relation and Lorentz invariance relation allows one to eliminate the twist-3 quark-gluon correlator (associated with the longitudinally polarized proton) in favor of one-variable twist-3 quark distributions and the (twist-2) transversity parton density. Including this result with the twist-3 pieces associated with the transversely polarized proton and unpolarized final-state hadron (which have already been calculated in the literature), we now have the complete leading-order cross section for this process.

Collinear Twist-3 Approach to Transverse Single-Spin Asymmetry in Proton-Proton Collision

We present our recent analysis on the transverse single-spin asymmetry (SSA) in inclusive pion and direct-photon production in pp collisions for RHIC kinematics. The analysis includes the contributions from twist-3 quark-gluon-quark correlations in the proton and twist-3 fragmentation effects for the pion. Some of the functions appearing in the formula for the SSA, such as the soft-gluon-pole Qiu-Sterman function, the nucleon transversity, and the Collins function were fixed consistently with the SSA data in semi-inclusive DIS and in e+e- annihilation, so that our analysis is free from the sign mismatch problem.

The RHIC SPIN Program: Achievements and Future Opportunities

Time and again, spin has been a key element in the exploration of fundamental physics. Spin-dependent observables have often revealed deficits in the assumed theoretical framework and have led to novel developments and concepts. Spin is exploited in many parity-violating experiments searching for physics beyond the Standard Model or studying the nature of nucleon-nucleon forces. The RHIC spin program plays a special role in this grand scheme: it uses spin to study how a complex many-body system such as the proton arises from the dynamics of QCD. Many exciting results from RHIC spin have emerged to date, most of them from RHIC running after the 2007 Long Range Plan. In this document we present highlights from the RHIC program to date and lay out the roadmap for the significant advances that are possible with future RHIC running.

Left-right spin asymmetry in $\ell N^\uparrow \to h X$

We consider the inclusive production of hadrons in lepton-nucleon scattering. For a transversely polarized nucleon this reaction shows a left-right azimuthal asymmetry, which we compute in twist-3 collinear factorization at leading order in perturbation theory. All non-perturbative parton correlators of the calculation are fixed through information from other hard processes. Our results for the left-right asymmetry agree in sign with recent data for charged pion production from the HERMES Collaboration and from Jefferson Lab. However, the magnitude of the computed asymmetries tends to be larger than the data. Potential reasons for this outcome are identified. We also give predictions for future experiments and highlight in particular the unique opportunities at an Electron Ion Collider.
