A New Derivation of the Twist-3 Gluon Fragmentation Contribution to Polarized Hyperon Production

A novel method of formulating the twist-3 gluon fragmentation function contribution to hyperon polarization in the proton-proton collision is presented. The method employs a covariant gauge and takes full advantage of the Ward-Takahashi identities before performing the collinear expansion. It provides a robust way of constructing the general cross section formula, and also a clear understanding for the absence of the ghost-like terms in the twist-3 cross section in the leading order with respect to the QCD coupling constant.

Transverse Polarization of Hyperons Produced in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

We study the transverse polarization of hyperons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, $ep\to eΛ^\uparrow X$, in the framework of the collinear twist-3 factorization. The cross section from the twist-3 distribution functions and the twist-3 quark fragmentation functions is computed in the leading order with respect to the QCD coupling constant. The constraint relations among the twist-3 FFs are taken into account to simplify the formula. The formula is relevant to large-$P_T$ hyperon production in the future Electron-Ion-Collider experiment.

Twist-3 Gluon Fragmentation Contribution to Hyperon Polarization in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

We derive the twist-3 gluon fragmentation function (FF) contribution to the transversely polarized hyperon production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, $ep\to eΛ^\uparrow X$, in the leading order (LO) with respect to the QCD coupling in the framework of the collinear twist-3 factorization. Together with the known result for the contribution from the twist-3 distribution in the proton and the twist-3 quark FFs for the hyperon, this completes the LO cross section for this process. The constraint relations among the twist-3 FFs are taken into account. The formula is relevant to large-$P_T$ hyperon production in the future Electron-Ion-Collider experiment.

Exact Relations for Twist-3 Gluon Distribution and Fragmentation Functions from Operator Identities

We perform a systematic study on the twist-3 gluon distribution and fragmentation functions which appear in the collinear twist-3 factorization for hard inclusive processes. Three types of twist-3 distribution and fragmentation functions, i.e., intrinsic, kinematical and dynamical ones, which are necessary to describe all kinds of twist-3 cross sections, are related to each other by the operator identities based on the QCD equation of motion and the Lorentz invariance properties of the correlation functions. We derive the exact relations for all twist-3 gluonic distribution and fragmentation functions for a spin-1/2 hadron. Those relations allow one to express intrinsic and kinematical twist-3 gluon functions in terms of the twist-2 and dynamical twist-3 functions, which provides a basis for the renormalization of intrinsic and kinematical twist-3 functions. In addition, those model independent relations are crucial to guarantee gauge invariance and frame independence properties of the twist-3 cross sections.

Operator Constraints for Twist-3 Functions and Lorentz Invariance Properties of Twist-3 Observables

We investigate the behavior under Lorentz tranformations of perturbative coefficient functions in a collinear twist-3 formalism relevant for high-energy observables including transverse polarization of hadrons. We argue that those perturbative coefficient functions can, {\it a priori}, acquire quite different yet Lorentz-invariant forms in various frames. This somewhat surprising difference can be traced back to a general dependence of the perturbative coefficient functions on lightcone vectors which are introduced by the twist-3 factorization formulae and which are frame-dependent. One can remove this spurious frame dependence by invoking so-called Lorentz invariance relations (LIRs) between twist-3 parton correlation functions. Some of those relations for twist-3 distribution functions were discussed in the literature before. In this paper we derive the corresponding LIRs for twist-3 fragmentation functions. We explicitly demonstrate that these LIRs remove the lightcone vector dependence by considering transverse spin observables in the single-inclusive production of hadrons in lepton-nucleon collisions, $\ell N\to hX$. With the LIRs in hand, we also show that twist-3 observables in general can be written solely in terms of three-parton correlation functions.

Twist-3 effect from the longitudinally polarized proton for $A_{LT}$ in hadron production from $pp$ collisions

We compute the contribution from the longitudinally polarized proton to the twist-3 double-spin asymmetry $A_{LT}$ in inclusive (light) hadron production from proton-proton collisions,i.e., $p^\uparrow \vec{p}\to h\,X$. We show that using the relevant QCD equation-of-motion relation and Lorentz invariance relation allows one to eliminate the twist-3 quark-gluon correlator (associated with the longitudinally polarized proton) in favor of one-variable twist-3 quark distributions and the (twist-2) transversity parton density. Including this result with the twist-3 pieces associated with the transversely polarized proton and unpolarized final-state hadron (which have already been calculated in the literature), we now have the complete leading-order cross section for this process.

Collinear Twist-3 Approach to Transverse Single-Spin Asymmetry in Proton-Proton Collision

We present our recent analysis on the transverse single-spin asymmetry (SSA) in inclusive pion and direct-photon production in pp collisions for RHIC kinematics. The analysis includes the contributions from twist-3 quark-gluon-quark correlations in the proton and twist-3 fragmentation effects for the pion. Some of the functions appearing in the formula for the SSA, such as the soft-gluon-pole Qiu-Sterman function, the nucleon transversity, and the Collins function were fixed consistently with the SSA data in semi-inclusive DIS and in e+e- annihilation, so that our analysis is free from the sign mismatch problem.

Hyperon polarization from the twist-3 distribution in the unpolarized proton-proton collision

We investigate the transverse polarization of a hyperon produced in the high-energy unpolarized proton-proton collision, $pp\toΛ^\uparrow X$, based on the collinear twist-3 factorization formalism. We focus on the contribution from the twist-3 distribution in one of the unpolarized proton and the transversity fragmentation function for the final hyperon. Utilizing the "master formula" for the soft-gluon-pole cross section, we clarify the reason for why it receives only the derivative term of the twist-3 distribution. We also present the first computation of the soft-fermion-pole cross section and found that it vanishes. This means that the derivative of the soft-gluon-pole function is the only source for the twist-3 cross section from the unpolarized twist-3 distribution, which provides a useful basis for a phenomenological analysis.

Contribution of twist-3 fragmentation function to single transverse-spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering

We study the contribution of the twist-3 fragmentation function to the single-transverse spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering within the framework of the collinear factorization. Making use of the Ward-Takahashi identity in QCD, we establish the formalism in the Feynman gauge to calculate the non-pole contribution of the twist-3 fragmentation function to the asymmetry and derive the complete cross-section formula in the leading order QCD perturbation theory. The obtained twist-3 hadronic tensor is shown to satisfy the electromagnetic gauge-invariance. The behavior in the small transverse- momentum region for the five structure functions is also given.

Three-gluon contribution to the single spin asymmetry for light hadron production in pp collision

We study the twist-3 three-gluon contribution to the single spin asymmetry in the light-hadron production in pp collision in the framework of the collinear factorization. We derive the corresponding cross section formula in the leading order with respect to the QCD coupling constant. We also present a numerical calculation of the asymmetry at the RHIC energy, using a model for the three-gluon correlation functions suggested by the asymmetry observed in the $D$-meson production at RHIC.

Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetry in Large $P_T$ Open Charm Production at an Electron-Ion Collider

We discuss the single transverse-spin asymmetry (SSA) to be observed in the $D$-meson production with large transverse-momentum in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, $e p^\uparrow \rightarrow e D X$. This contribution is embodied as a twist-3 mechanism in the collinear factorization, which is induced by purely gluonic correlation inside the transversely-polarized nucleon, in particular, by the three-gluon correlation effects. The complete formula for the corresponding SSA in the leading-order QCD is expressed in terms of the four independent gluonic correlation functions and reveals the five independent structures with respect to the dependence on the azimuthal angle for the produced $D$-meson. We present the numerical calculations of the SSA formula at the kinematics relevant to a future Electron Ion Collider.

Twist-3 quark-gluon correlation contribution to single-transverse spin asymmetry for direct-photon and single-jet productions in pp collision

We study the contribution of the collinear twist-3 quark-gluon correlation to the single transverse-spin asymmetry in direct-photon and single-jet productions in pp collision. At typical RHIC kinematics we find sizable asymmetries in the forward region of the polarized nucleon while they are almost zero in the backward region. We also find the soft-fermion pole contribution is vanishingly small, suggesting the measurement of these asymmetries provides us with an unique opportunity to determine the net soft-gluon pole function.

A phenomenological study of single transverse-spin asymmetry for inclusive light-hadron productions at RHIC

We study the single transverse-spin asymmetry for inclusive light-hadron productions in the proton-proton collision, $\pphx$ ($h=π,K,η$), for the RHIC kinematics based on the twist-3 mechanism in the collinear factorization. The analysis includes all the contributions from the soft-gluon pole and the soft-fermion pole for the twist-3 quark-gluon correlation functions in the transversely polarized proton. After discussing the flavor decomposition and the $P_T$-dependence of the asymmetry obtained in the previous analysis at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{S}=62.4$ and 200 GeV, we will give a prediction for the asymmetry at $\sqrt{S}=500$ GeV and also for the $η$-meson production. We found slightly smaller asymmetry at $\sqrt{S}=500$ GeV for $π^{\pm,0}$ and $K^+$ compared with those at the lower energies. The asymmetry for the $η$-meson turned out to be significantly larger than that for $π^0$.

Hard- and soft-fermion-pole contributions to single transverse-spin asymmetry for Drell-Yan process

We study the single transverse-spin asymmetry for the Drell-Yan lepton pair production based on the twist-3 mechanism in the collinear factorization. We calculate all the hard-pole (HP) and the soft-fermion-pole (SFP) contributions to the single-spin-dependent cross section originating from the quark-gluon correlation functions in the transversely polarized nucleon in the leading order with respect to the QCD coupling constant. Combined with the soft-gluon-pole (SGP) contribution, this completes the corresponding twist-3 cross section. In the real photon limit, where all the HP contributions are transformed into the SFP contribution, we find that the SFP partonic hard cross section for the two independent quark-gluon correlation functions coincides in each scattering channel, as in the case of the inclusive light-hadron production. Our result enables one to extract the quark-gluon correlation functions from the forthcoming experiments at several facilities such as RHIC and J-PARC.

Impact of the triple-gluon correlation functions on the single spin asymmetries in pp collisions

We calculate the single-spin-dependent cross section formula for the D-meson production and the direct-photon production in the pp collision induced by the twist-3 triple-gluon correlation functions in the transversely polarized nucleon. We also present a model calculation for the asymmetries in comparison with the preliminary data given by RHIC, showing the impact of the correlation functions on the asymmetries.

Master Formula for the Three-Gluon Contribution to Single Spin Asymmetry in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

We derive a "master formula" for the contribution of the three-gluon correlation function in the nucleon to the twist-3 single-spin-dependent cross section for semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, ep^\uparrow\to eDX. This is an extension of the similar formula known for the so-called soft-gluon-pole contribution induced by the quark-gluon correlation function in a variety of processes. Our master formula reduces the relevant interfering partonic subprocess with the participation of the three gluons to the Born cross sections for the γ^*g\to c\bar{c} scattering, which reveals the new structure behind the twist-3 single spin asymmetry and simplifies the actual calculation greatly. A possible extension to higher order corrections is also discussed.

Probing multigluon correlations through single spin asymmetries in pp collisions

We study the single spin asymmetries for the $D$-meson production, Drell-Yan lepton-pair production and the direct-photon production in the $pp$ collision induced by the twist-3 three-gluon correlation functions in the transversely polarized nucleon. We present a corresponding polarized cross section formula in the leading-order with respect to the QCD coupling and a model calculation for the asymmetries, illustrating the sensitivity to the form of the correlation functions.

Probing the three-gluon correlation functions by the single spin asymmetry in p^\uparrow p\to DX

We study the single transverse-spin asymmetry for the inclusive open-charm production in the pp-collision, p^\uparrow p\to DX, induced by the three-gluon correlation functions in the polarized nucleon. We derive the corresponding twist-3 cross section formula in the leading order with respect to the QCD coupling constant. As in the case of the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, ep^\uparrow\to eDX, our result differs from the previous result in the literature. We also derive a "master formula" which expresses the twist-3 cross section in terms of the gg\to c\bar{c} hard scattering cross section. We present a model calculation of the asymmetry at the RHIC energy, demonstrating the sensitivity of the asymmetry on the form of the three-gluon correlation functions.

Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetry in Open Charm Production in SIDIS

We discuss the single transverse-spin asymmetry (SSA) to be observed in the $D$-meson production with large transverse-momentum in semi-inclusive DIS (SIDIS), $e p^\uparrow \rightarrow e D X$. This contribution is embodied as a twist-3 mechanism in the collinear factorization, which is induced by purely gluonic correlation inside the transversely-polarized nucleon, in particular, by the three-gluon correlation effects. We derive the first complete formula for the corresponding SSA in the leading-order QCD, revealing the five independent structures with respect to the dependence on the azimuthal angle for the produced $D$-meson. Our result obeys universal structure behind the SSAs in a variety of hard processes. We present the numerical calculations of our SSA formula for the $D$-meson production at the kinematics relevant to a future Electron Ion Collider.

Three-gluon contribution to the single spin asymmetry in Drell-Yan and direct-photon processes

We derive the single-spin-dependent cross section for the Drell-Yan lepton-pair production and the direct-photon production in the $pp$-collision induced by the twist-3 three-gluon correlation functions in the transversely polarized nucleon in the leading order with respect to the QCD coupling constant. Combined with the contribution from the twist-3 quark-gluon correlation functions in the literature, this completes the twist-3 cross section for these processes. We also present a model calculation of the asymmetry for the direct photon production at the RHIC energy, demonstrating the sensitivity of the asymmetry to the form of the three-gluon correlation functions. In particular, we show that the asymmetry in the backward direction of the polarized nucleon is determined by the small-$x$ behavior of the correlation functions.

A new twist-3 analysis of the single transverse-spin asymmetry for pion and kaon production at RHIC

We present a new analysis for the single-transverse spin asymmetry (SSA) for the inclusive pion and kaon productions in the proton-proton collisions measured at RHIC. The framework we use is the collinear factorization in which SSA appears as a twist-3 observable resulting from the multiparton correlations in the hadrons. As a relevant multiparton correlation, we include all the contributions associated with the quark-gluon correlation functions in the transversely polarized proton, i.e., those from the soft-gluon-pole (SGP) and the soft-fermion-pole (SFP). We have found that the SGP contribution alone is insufficient to describe the observed RHIC A_N data and the inclusion of the SFP contribution plays an important role for the improved description of the data. In particular, P_T-dependence of A_N and A_N for K^- have been well described in our new analysis.

Contribution of Twist-3 Multi-Gluon Correlation Functions to Single Spin Asymmetry in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

As a possible source of the single transverse spin asymmetry, we study the contribution from purely gluonic correlation represented by the twist-3 ``three-gluon correlation" functions in the transversely polarized nucleon. We first define a complete set of the relevant three-gluon correlation functions, and then derive its contribution to the twist-3 single-spin-dependent cross section for the $D$-meson production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, which is relevant to determine the three-gluon correlations. Our cross-section formula differs from the corresponding result in the literature, and the origin of the discrepancy is clarified.

New Analysis of the Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetry for Hadron Production at RHIC

We analyze the single transverse-spin asymmetry (SSAs) for inclusive hadron production in the $pp$ collision at RHIC based on the twist-3 mechanism in QCD. As an origin of SSAs, we take into account of all kinds of pole contributions associated with the twist-3 quark-gluon correlation functions in the polarized proton. By the inclusion of the soft-fermion-pole contribution in addition to the soft-gluon-pole contribution, we find SSAs observed at RHIC are better described for all kinds of mesons. $P_T$-dependence of the asymmetry and the comparison with the FNAL data are also presented.

On the contribution of twist-3 multi-gluon correlation functions to single transverse-spin asymmetry in SIDIS

We study the single spin asymmetry (SSA) induced by purely gluonic correlation inside a nucleon, in particular, by the three-gluon correlation functions in the transversely polarized nucleon, $p^\uparrow$. This contribution is embodied as a twist-3 mechanism in the collinear factorization framework and controls the SSA to be observed in the $D$-meson production with large transverse-momentum in semi-inclusive DIS (SIDIS), $ep^\uparrow \rightarrow eDX$. We define the relevant three-gluon correlation functions in the nucleon, and determine their complete set at the twsit-3 level taking into account symmetry constraints in QCD. We derive the single-spin-dependent cross section for the $D$-meson production in SIDIS, taking into account all the relevant contributions at the twist-3 level. The result is obtained in a manifestly gauge-invariant form as the factorization formula in terms of the three-gluon correlation functions and reveals the five independent structures with respect to the dependence on the azimuthal angle for the produced $D$ meson. We also demonstrate the remarkable relation between the twist-3 single-spin-dependent cross section and twist-2 cross sections for the $D$-meson production, as a manifestation of universal structure behind the SSA in a variety of hard processes.

Probing the twist-3 multi-gluon correlation functions by pp \to DX

We study the single spin asymmetry (SSA) for the D-meson production $A_N^D$ in the $pp$ collision, $p^\uparrow p\to DX$, in the framework of the collinear factorization. Since the charm quark is mainly produced through the $c\bar{c}$-pair creation from the gluon-fusion process, this is an ideal process to probe the twist-3 triple-gluon correlation functions in the polarized nucleon. We derive the corresponding cross section formula for the contribution of the triple-gluon correlation function to $A_N^D$ in $p^\uparrow p\to DX$, applying the method developed for $ep^\uparrow\to eDX$ in our previous study. As in the case of $ep^\uparrow\to eDX$, our result differs from a previous study in the literature. We will also present a simple estimate of the triple-gluon correlation functions based on the preliminary data on $A_N^D$ by RHIC.

Two-parton Light-cone Distribution Amplitudes of Tensor Mesons

We present a detailed study of the two-parton light-cone distribution amplitudes for $1\,^3P_2$ nonet tensor mesons. The asymptotic two-parton distribution amplitudes of twist-2 and twist-3 are given. The decay constants $f_T$ and $f_T^\bot$ defined by the matrices of non-local operators on the lightcone are estimated using the QCD sum rule techniques. We also study the decay constants for $f_2(1270)$ and $f_2^\prime(1525)$ based on the hypothesis of tensor meson dominance together with the data of $Γ(f_2\to ππ)$ and $Γ(f'_2\to K\bar K)$ and find that the results are in accordance with the sum rule predictions.

Soft-fermion-pole contribution to single-spin asymmetry for pion production in pp collisions

We study the single transverse spin asymmetry for the inclusive pion production in the nucleon-nucleon collision, p^\uparrow p\toπX, based on the twist-3 mechanism in the collinear factorization. We derive the soft-fermion-pole (SFP) contribution to the twist-3 single-spin-dependent cross section associated with the twist-3 quark-gluon correlation functions in the polarized nucleon. We find that the SFP can give rise to a large effect to the asymmetry A_N owing to the large partonic hard cross sections with the large color factor, if the SFP function has a similar magnitude as the soft-gluon-pole (SGP) function, in spite of the absence of the "derivative term" for the SFP function unlike for the SGP function.

Novel Master Formula for Twist-3 Soft-Gluon-Pole Mechanism to Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetry

We prove that twist-3 soft-gluon-pole (SGP) cross section for single spin asymmetries is determined by a certain ``primordial'' twist-2 cross section up to kinematic and color factors in the leading order perturbative QCD. This unveils universal structure behind the SGP cross sections in a variety of hard processes, and also the special role of the scale invariance in the corresponding primordial cross section, which leads to remarkable simplification of the SGP cross sections for the production of massless particle, such as those for pion production p^\uparrow p \to πX and direct-photon production p^\uparrow p \to γX.

Double Spin Asymmetries for Large-$p_T$ Hadron Production in Semi-Inclusive DIS

We study the twist-2 double-spin asymmetries for the 2-jets and large-$p_T$ hadron ($π$, $Λ$ etc) production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering to $O(α_s)$ in perturbative QCD. After deriving the complete set of the polarized cross section which is differential with respect to the transverse momentum, we discuss characteristic features of the azymuthal spin asymmetries, using existing parton densities and fragmentation functions at COMPASS and EIC energies.

Single-spin asymmetries and soft-gluon poles

Mechanism for the single transverse spin asymmeties in the pion production, p^\uparrow + p'\to π(\ell_T) + X, and the Λhyperon polarization, p + p' \to Λ^\uparrow (\ell_T)+ X, is investigated in the framework of QCD factorization theorem. We identify all the soft-gluon pole contributions coming from the twist-3 distribution and/or fragmentation functions and show that they give rise to large asymmetries at large x_F.

Bag Model Prediction for the Nucleon's Chiral-odd Twist-3 Distribution h_L(x,Q^2) at High Q^2

We study the Q^2 evolution of the nucleon's chiral-odd twist-3 distribution h_L(x,Q^2) starting from the MIT bag model calculation. A simple GLAP equation for h_L(x,Q^2) obtained at large N_c is used for the Q^2 evolution. The correction due to the finite value of N_c is O(1/N_c^2)\sim 10% level. It turns out that the twist-3 contribution to h_L(x,Q^2) is significantly reduced at Q^2=10 GeV^2 in contrast to the g_2(x,Q^2) case. This is due to the fact that the corresponding anomalous dimension for h_L is larger than that for g_2 at small n (spin).

preprint1997arXiv

Next-to-leading order Q^2-evolution of the transversity distribution h_1(x, Q^2)

We present a calculation of the two-loop anomalous dimension for the transversity distribution h_1(x,Q^2), $γ^{h(1)}_n$, in the MS scheme of the dimensional regularization. Due to the chiral-odd nature, h_1 does not mix with the gluon distributions, and thus our result is the same for the flavor-singlet and nonsinglet distributions. At small n (moment of h_1), $γ^{h(1)}_n$ is significantly larger than $γ^{f(1)}_n$ (the anomalous dimension for the nonsinglet f_1), but approaches $γ^{f(1)}_n$ very quickly at large n, keeping the relation $γ^{h(1)}_n > γ^{f(1)}_n$. This feature is in parallel to the relation between the one-loop anomalous dimension for f_1 and h_1.
