Generalized Parton Distributions from Lattice QCD with Asymmetric Momentum Transfer: Unpolarized Quarks

Traditionally, lattice QCD computations of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) have been carried out in a symmetric frame, where the transferred momentum is symmetrically distributed between the incoming and outgoing hadrons. However, such frames are inconvenient since they require a separate calculation for each value of the momentum transfer, increasing significantly the computational cost. In this work, by focusing on the quasi-distribution approach, we lay the foundation for faster and more effective lattice QCD calculations of GPDs exploiting asymmetric frames, with freedom in the transferred momentum distribution. An important ingredient of our approach is the Lorentz covariant parameterization of the matrix elements in terms of Lorentz-invariant amplitudes, which allows one to relate matrix elements in different frames. We also use this amplitude approach to propose a new definition of quasi-GPDs that is frame-independent and, more importantly, may lead to smaller power corrections in the matching relations to the light-cone GPDs. We demonstrate the efficacy of the formalism through numerical calculations using one ensemble of $N_f$=2+1+1 twisted mass fermions with a clover improvement. The value of the light-quark masses lead to a pion mass of about 260 MeV. Concentrating on the proton, and limiting ourselves to a vanishing longitudinal momentum transfer to the target, we extract the invariant amplitudes from matrix element calculations in both the symmetric and asymmetric frame, and obtain results for the twist-2 light-cone GPDs for unpolarized quarks, that is, $H$ and $E$.

GPDs in asymmetric frames

It is often taken for granted that Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) are defined in the "symmetric" frame, where the transferred momentum is symmetrically distributed between the incoming/outgoing hadrons. However, such frames pose computational challenges for the lattice QCD practitioners. In these proceedings, we lay the foundation for lattice QCD calculations of GPDs in "asymmetric" frames, where the transferred momentum is not symmetrically distributed between the incoming/outgoing hadrons. The novelty of our work relies on the parameterization of the matrix elements in terms of Lorentz-invariant amplitudes, which not only helps in establishing relations between the said frames but also helps in isolating higher-twist contaminations. As an example, we focus on the unpolarized GPDs for spin-1/2 particles.

Burkhardt-Cottingham-type sum rules for light-cone and quasi-PDFs

The Burkhardt-Cottingham (BC) sum rule connects the twist-3 light-cone parton distribution function (PDF) $g_{T}(x)$ to the twist-2 helicity PDF $g_{1}(x)$. The chiral-odd counterpart of the BC sum rule relates the twist-3 light-cone PDF $h_{L}(x)$ to the twist-2 transversity PDF $h_{1}(x)$. These BC-type sum rules can also be derived for the corresponding quasi-PDFs. We perform a perturbative check of the BC-type sum rules in the quark target model and the Yukawa model, by going beyond the ultra-violet (UV) divergent terms. We employ dimensional regularization (DR) and cut-off schemes to regulate UV divergences, and show that the BC-type sum rules hold for DR, while they are generally violated when using a cut-off. This violation can be traced back to the breaking of rotational invariance. We find corresponding results for the sum rule relating the mass of the target to the twist-3 PDF $e(x)$. Moreover, we supplement our analytical results with numerical calculations.

First global QCD analysis of the TMD $\boldsymbol{g_{1T}}$ from semi-inclusive DIS data

The worm-gear transverse momentum dependent (TMD) function $g_{1T}$ is one of the eight leading-twist TMDs and has the probabilistic interpretation of finding a longitudinally polarized quark inside a transversely polarized hadron. In this work, we present the first simultaneous extraction of $g_{1T}$ from all the available experimental measurements. The study involves the analysis of COMPASS, HERMES, and Jefferson Lab data on semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering using Monte Carlo techniques. We also compare $g_{1T}$ obtained from this experimental data with different theoretical approaches, such as the large-$N_c$ approximation, the Wandzura-Wilczek-type approximation, and lattice QCD.

Parton distribution functions beyond leading twist from lattice QCD: The $h_L(x)$ case

We report the first-ever calculation of the isovector flavor combination of the chiral-odd twist-3 parton distribution $h_L(x)$ for the proton from lattice QCD. We employ gauge configurations with two degenerate light, a strange and a charm quark ($N_f=2+1+1$) of maximally twisted mass fermions with a clover improvement. The lattice has a spatial extent of 3 fm and lattice spacing of 0.093 fm. The values of the quark masses lead to a pion mass of $260$ MeV. We use a source-sink time separation of 1.12 fm to control contamination from excited states. Our calculation is based on the quasi-distribution approach, with three values for the proton momentum: 0.83 GeV, 1.25 GeV, and 1.67 GeV. The lattice data are renormalized non-perturbatively using the RI$'$ scheme, and the final result for $h_L(x)$ is presented in the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme at the scale of 2 GeV. Furthermore, we compute in the same setup the transversity distribution, $h_1(x)$, which allows us, in particular, to compare $h_L(x)$ to its Wandzura-Wilczek approximation. We also combine results for the isovector and isoscalar flavor combinations to disentangle the individual quark contributions for $h_1(x)$ and $h_L(x)$, and address the Wandzura-Wilczek approximation in that case as well.

Revisiting the proton mass decomposition

Different decompositions (sum rules) for the proton mass have been proposed in the literature. All of them are related to the energy-momentum tensor in quantum chromodynamics. We review and revisit these decompositions by paying special attention to recent developments with regard to the renormalization of the energy-momentum tensor. The connection between the sum rules is discussed as well. We present numerical results for the various terms of the mass decompositions up to 3 loops in the strong coupling, and consider their scheme dependence. We also elaborate on the role played by the trace anomaly and the sigma terms.

Operator Constraints for Twist-3 Functions and Lorentz Invariance Properties of Twist-3 Observables

We investigate the behavior under Lorentz tranformations of perturbative coefficient functions in a collinear twist-3 formalism relevant for high-energy observables including transverse polarization of hadrons. We argue that those perturbative coefficient functions can, {\it a priori}, acquire quite different yet Lorentz-invariant forms in various frames. This somewhat surprising difference can be traced back to a general dependence of the perturbative coefficient functions on lightcone vectors which are introduced by the twist-3 factorization formulae and which are frame-dependent. One can remove this spurious frame dependence by invoking so-called Lorentz invariance relations (LIRs) between twist-3 parton correlation functions. Some of those relations for twist-3 distribution functions were discussed in the literature before. In this paper we derive the corresponding LIRs for twist-3 fragmentation functions. We explicitly demonstrate that these LIRs remove the lightcone vector dependence by considering transverse spin observables in the single-inclusive production of hadrons in lepton-nucleon collisions, $\ell N\to hX$. With the LIRs in hand, we also show that twist-3 observables in general can be written solely in terms of three-parton correlation functions.

Parton Fragmentation Functions

The field of fragmentation functions of light quarks and gluons is reviewed. In addition to integrated fragmentation functions, attention is paid to the dependence of fragmentation functions on transverse momenta and on polarization degrees of freedom. Higher-twist and di-hadron fragmentation functions are considered as well. Moreover, the review covers both theoretical and experimental developments in single-inclusive hadron production in electron-positron annihilation, deep-inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering, and proton-proton collisions.

Collinear Twist-3 Approach to Transverse Single-Spin Asymmetry in Proton-Proton Collision

We present our recent analysis on the transverse single-spin asymmetry (SSA) in inclusive pion and direct-photon production in pp collisions for RHIC kinematics. The analysis includes the contributions from twist-3 quark-gluon-quark correlations in the proton and twist-3 fragmentation effects for the pion. Some of the functions appearing in the formula for the SSA, such as the soft-gluon-pole Qiu-Sterman function, the nucleon transversity, and the Collins function were fixed consistently with the SSA data in semi-inclusive DIS and in e+e- annihilation, so that our analysis is free from the sign mismatch problem.

Left-right spin asymmetry in $\ell N^\uparrow \to h X$

We consider the inclusive production of hadrons in lepton-nucleon scattering. For a transversely polarized nucleon this reaction shows a left-right azimuthal asymmetry, which we compute in twist-3 collinear factorization at leading order in perturbation theory. All non-perturbative parton correlators of the calculation are fixed through information from other hard processes. Our results for the left-right asymmetry agree in sign with recent data for charged pion production from the HERMES Collaboration and from Jefferson Lab. However, the magnitude of the computed asymmetries tends to be larger than the data. Potential reasons for this outcome are identified. We also give predictions for future experiments and highlight in particular the unique opportunities at an Electron Ion Collider.

Dihadron fragmentation functions for large invariant mass

Using perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics, we compute dihadron fragmentation functions for a large invariant mass of the dihadron pair. The main focus is on the interference fragmentation function $H_1^{\open}$, which plays an important role in spin physics of the nucleon. Our calculation also reveals that $H_1^{\open}$ and the Collins fragmentation function have a closely related underlying dynamics. By considering semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, we further show that collinear factorization in terms of dihadron fragmentation functions, and collinear factorization in terms of single hadron fragmentation functions provide the same result in the region of intermediate invariant mass.

Distribution of linearly polarized gluons inside a large nucleus

The distribution of linearly polarized gluons inside a large nucleus is studied in the framework of the color glass condensate. We find that the Weizsäcker-Williams distribution saturates the positivity bound at large transverse momenta and is suppressed at small transverse momenta, whereas the dipole distribution saturates the bound for any value of the transverse momentum. We also discuss processes in which both distributions of linearly polarized gluons can be probed.

Exploring the structure of the proton through polarization observables in l p \to jet X

We present results for a complete set of polarization observables for jet production in lepton proton collision, where the final state lepton is not observed. The calculations are carried out in collinear factorization at the level of Born diagrams. For all the observables we also provide numerical estimates for typical kinematics of a potential future Electron Ion Collider. On the basis of this numerical study, the prospects for the transverse single target spin asymmetry are particularly promising. This observable is given by a certain quark-gluon correlation function, which has a direct relation to the transverse momentum dependent Sivers parton distribution.

Transverse single spin asymmetry in the Drell-Yan process

We revisit the transverse single spin asymmetry in the angular distribution of a Drell-Yan dilepton pair. We study this asymmetry by using twist-3 collinear factorization, and we obtain the same result both in covariant gauge and in the light-cone gauge. Moreover, we have checked the electromagnetic gauge invariance of our calculation. Our final expression for the asymmetry differs from all the previous results given in the literature. The overall sign of this asymmetry is as important as the sign of the Sivers asymmetry in Drell-Yan.

Semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering at small transverse momentum

We study the cross section for one-particle inclusive deep inelastic scattering off the nucleon for low transverse momentum of the detected hadron. We decompose the cross section in terms of structure functions and calculate them at tree level in terms of transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions. Our results are complete in the one-photon exchange approximation at leading and first subleading twist accuracy, with both beam and target polarization.

Collins fragmentation function from gluon rescattering

We estimate the Collins fragmentation function by introducing the effect of gluon rescattering in a model calculation of the fragmentation process. We include all necessary diagrams to the one-loop level and compute the nontrivial phases giving rise to the Collins function. We compare our results to the ones obtained from pion rescattering. We conclude that three out of four one-loop diagrams give sizeable contributions to the Collins function, and that the effect of gluon rescattering has a magnitude comparable to that of pion rescattering, but has opposite sign.

Semi-Exclusive Production of Photons at HERA

We study the feasibility of measuring semi-exclusive photon production γ+ p \to γ+ Y at HERA. The cross section of photons produced at large transverse momenta, recoiling off an inclusive system Y of limited mass, can without photon isolation cuts be simply expressed in terms of hard pQCD subprocesses and standard target parton distributions. With the help of event generators we identify the kinematic region where quark and gluon fragmentation processes can be neglected. The cross section in this semi-exclusive region is large enough to be measured with an upgraded HERA luminosity of L = 100/pb. The subprocesses of lowest order in α_s are suppressed at low recoil masses M_Y, compared to higher order gluon exchange, i.e. BFKL contributions. The distinct M_Y-dependence makes it possible to determine experimentally the kinematic range where the higher order processes dominate.
