Neutron Scattering Study of Fluctuating and Static Spin Correlations in the Anisotropic Spin Glass Fe$_2$TiO$_5$

The anisotropic spin glass transition, in which spin freezing is observed only along the c-axis in pseudobrookite Fe$_2$TiO$_5$, has long been perplexing because the Fe$^{3+}$ moments (d$^5$) are expected to be isotropic. Recently, neutron diffraction demonstrated that surfboard-shaped antiferromagnetic nanoregions coalesce above the glass transition temperature, T$_g$ $\approx$ 55 K, and a model was proposed in which the freezing of the fluctuations of the surfboards' magnetization leads to the anisotropic spin glass state. Given this new model, we have carried out high resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the spin-spin correlations to understand the temperature dependence of the intra-surfboard spin dynamics on neutron (picosecond) time-scales. Here, we report on the temperature-dependence of the spin fluctuations measured from single crystal Fe$_2$TiO$_5$. Strong quasi-elastic magnetic scattering, arising from intra-surfboard correlations, is observed well above T$_g$. The spin fluctuations possess a steep energy-wave vector relation and are indicative of strong exchange interactions, consistent with the large Curie-Weiss temperature. As the temperature approaches T$_g$ from above, a shift in spectral weight from inelastic to elastic scattering is observed. At various temperatures between 4 K and 300 K, a characteristic relaxation rate of the fluctuations is determined. Despite the freezing of the majority of the spin correlations, an inelastic contribution remains even at base temperature, signifying the presence of fluctuating intra-surfboard spin correlations to at least T/T$_g$ $\approx$ 0.1 consistent with a description of Fe$_2$TiO$_5$ as a hybrid between conventional and geometrically frustrated spin glasses.

Single pair of Weyl nodes in the spin-canted structure of EuCd$_2$As$_2$

Time reversal symmetry breaking Weyl semimetals are unique among Weyl materials in allowing the minimal number of Weyl points thus offering the clearest signatures of the associated physics. Here we present neutron diffraction, density functional theory and transport measurement results which indicate that EuCd$_2$As$_2$ , under ambient field, strain and pressure, is such a material with a single pair of Weyl points. Our work reveals a magnetic structure (magnetic space group $C2'/m'$) with Eu moments pointing along the [210] direction in-plane and canted $\sim$ 30$^{\circ}$ out-of-plane. Density functional theory calculations using this structure show that the observed canting drastically alters the relevant electronic bands, relative to the in-plane order, leading to a single set of well defined Weyl points. Furthermore, we find the canting angle can tune the distance of the Weyl points above the Fermi level, with the smallest distance at low canting angles. Finally, transport measurements of the anomalous Hall Effect and longitudinal magnetoresistance exhibit properties indicative of a chiral anomaly, thus supporting the neutron scattering and DFT results suggesting EuCd$_2$As$_2$ is close to the ideal situation of the Weyl "Hydrogen atom".

The Geometrically Frustrated Spin Glass (Fe1-pGap)2TiO5

The unusual anisotropy of the spin glass transition in the pseudobrookite system Fe$_2$TiO$_5$ has been interpreted as arising from an induced, van der Waals-like, interaction among magnetic clusters. Here we present susceptibility ($χ$) and specific heat data (C) for Fe2TiO5 diluted with non-magnetic Ga, (Fe$_{1-p}$Ga$_p$)$_2$TiO$_5$, for disorder parameter p = 0, 0.11, and 0.42, and elastic neutron scattering data for p = 0.20. A uniform suppression of T{_g} is observed upon increasing p, along with a value of $χ(T_g)$ that increases as T$_g$ decreases, i.e. $dχ(T_g)/dT_g< 0$. We also observe C(T) $\propto$ T$^2$ in the low temperature limit. The observed behavior places (Fe$_{1-p}$Ga$_p$)$_2$TiO$_5$ in the category of a strongly geometrically frustrated spin glass.

Synthesis and characterization of bulk Nd1-xSrxNiO2 and Nd1-xSrxNiO3

The recent reports of superconductivity in Nd1-xSrxNiO2/SrTiO3 heterostructures have reinvigorated interest in potential superconductivity of low-valence nickelates. Synthesis of Ni1+-containing compounds is notoriously difficult. In the current work, a combined sol-gel combustion and high-pressure annealing technique was employed to prepare polycrystalline perovskite Nd1-xSrxNiO3 (x = 0, 0.1 and 0.2). Metal nitrates and metal acetates were used as starting materials, and the latter were found to be superior to the former in terms of safety and reactivity. The Nd1-xSrxNiO3 compounds were subsequently reduced to Nd1 xSrxNiO2 using calcium hydride in a sealed, evacuated quartz tube. To understand the synthesis pathway, the evolution from NdNiO3 to NdNiO2 was monitored using in-situ synchrotron X ray diffraction during the reduction process. Electrical transport properties were consistent with an insulator-metal transition occurring between x = 0 and 0.1 for Nd1-xSrxNiO3. Superconductivity was not observed in our bulk samples of Nd1-xSrxNiO2. Neutron diffraction experiments at 3 K and 300 K were performed on Nd0.9Sr0.1NiO2, in which no magnetic Bragg reflections were observed, and the results of structural Rietveld refinement are provided.

Magnetotransport of single crystalline YSb

We report magnetic field dependent transport measurements on a single crystal of cubic YSb together with first principles calculations of its electronic structure. The transverse magnetoresistance does not saturate up to 9 T and attains a value of 75,000 % at 1.8 K. The Hall coefficient is electron-like at high temperature, changes sign to hole-like between 110 and 50 K, and again becomes electron-like below 50 K. First principles calculations show that YSb is a compensated semimetal with a qualitatively similar electronic structure to that of isostructural LaSb and LaBi, but with larger Fermi surface volume. The measured electron carrier density and Hall mobility calculated at 1.8 K, based on a single band approximation, are 6.5$\times10^{20}/$cm$^{3}$ and 6.2$\times10^{4}$cm$^{2}$/Vs, respectively. These values are comparable with those reported for LaBi and LaSb. Like LaBi and LaSb, YSb undergoes a magnetic field-induced metal-insulator-like transition below a characteristic temperature T$_{m}$, with resistivity saturation below 13 K. Thickness dependent electrical resistance measurements show a deviation of the resistance behavior from that expected for a normal metal; however, they do not unambiguously establish surface conduction as the mechanism for the resistivity plateau.

Stacked Charge Stripes in Quasi-Two_Dimensional Trilayer Nickelate La4Ni3O8

The quasi-two-dimensional nickelate La4Ni3O8 (La-438) is an anion deficient n=3 Ruddlesden-Popper (R-P) phase that consists of trilayer networks of square planar Ni ions, formally assigned as Ni1+ and Ni2+ in a 2:1 ratio. While previous studies on polycrystalline samples have identified a 105 K phase transition with a pronounced electronic and magnetic response but weak lattice character, no consensus on the origin of this transition has been reached. Here we show using synchrotron x-ray diffraction on high-pO2 floating-zone grown single crystals that this transition is driven by a real space ordering of charge into a quasi-2D charge stripe ground state. The charge stripe superlattice propagation vector, q=(2/3, 0, 1), corresponds with that found in the related 1/3-hole doped single layer Ruddlesden-Popper nickelate, La5/3Sr1/3NiO4 (LSNO-1/3, Ni2.33+) with orientation at 45-degrees to the Ni-O bonds. Like LSNO-1/3, the charge stripes in La-438 are weakly correlated along the c axis to form a staggered ABAB stacking that minimizes the Coulomb repulsion among the stripes. Surprisingly, however, we find that the charge stripes within each trilayer of La-438 are stacked in phase from one layer to the next, at odds with any simple Coulomb repulsion argument.

High pressure neutron scattering of the magnetoelastic Ni-Cr Prussian blue analogue

This paper summarizes 0 GPa to 0.6 GPa neutron diffraction measurements of a nickel hexacyanochromate coordination polymer (NiCrPB) that has the face-centered cubic, Prussian blue structure. Deuterated powders of NiCrPB contain ~100 nm sided cubic particles. The application of a large magnetic field shows the ambient pressure, saturated magnetic structure. Pressures of less than 1 GPa have previously been shown to decrease the magnetic susceptibility by as much as half, and we find modifications to the nuclear crystal structure at these pressures that we quantify. Bridging cyanide molecules isomerize their coordination direction under pressure to change the local ligand field and introduce inhomogeneities in the local (magnetic) anisotropy that act as pinning sites for magnetic domains, thereby reducing the low field magnetic susceptibility.

The role of random electric fields in relaxors

PbZr_{1-x}Ti_xO_3 (PZT) and Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_{1-x}Ti_xO_3 (PMN-$x$PT) are complex lead-oxide perovskites that display exceptional piezoelectric properties for pseudorhombohedral compositions near a tetragonal phase boundary. In PZT these compositions are ferroelectrics, but in PMN-xPT they are relaxors because the dielectric permittivity is frequency dependent and exhibits non-Arrhenius behavior. We show that the nanoscale structure unique to PMN-xPT and other lead-oxide perovskite relaxors is absent in PZT and correlates with a greater than 100% enhancement of the longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient in PMN-xPT relative to that in PZT. By comparing dielectric, structural, lattice dynamical, and piezoelectric measurements on PZT and PMN-xPT, two nearly identical compounds that represent weak and strong random electric field limits, we show that quenched (static) random fields establish the relaxor phase and identify the order parameter.

Common origin of the two types of magnetic fluctuations in iron chalcogenides

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study the low energy spin excitations in moderately doped non-superconducting Fe$_{1.01}$Te$_{0.72}$Se$_{0.28}$. The spin excitations in this system contain components near (0.5,0,0) and (0.5,0.5,0) in a-b plane reciprocal lattice units using tetragonal unit cell notation (a=b=3.772 Åand c=6.061 Å). At low energies the scattering is centered around (0.5,0,0). With increasing energy, the spectral weight of low energy spin excitations centered around (0.5,0,0) abruptly shifts around 3 meV to the incommensurate spin excitations centered around (0.5,0.5,0). However both types of spin fluctuations exhibit the identical temperature dependence. These results indicate that the (0.5,0,0) type spin excitations and the incommensurate excitations around the (0.5,0.5,0) position have a common origin and both must be taken into account to understand the nature of magnetism and superconducting pairing in the iron chalcogenides.

Single Crystal Study of Competing Rhombohedral and Monoclinic Order in Lead Zirconate Titanate

Neutron diffraction data obtained on single crystals of PbZr1-xTixO3 with x = 0.325 and x = 0.460, which lie on the pseudorhombohedral side of the morphotropic phase boundary, suggest a coexistence of rhombohedral (R3m/R3c) and monoclinic (Cm) domains and that monoclinic order is enhanced by Ti substitution. A monoclinic phase with a doubled unit cell (Cc) is ruled out as the ground state.
