Eminuscent phase in frustrated magnets: a challenge to quantum spin liquids

A geometrically frustrated (GF) magnet consists of localised magnetic moments, spins, whose orientation cannot be arranged to simultaneously minimise their interaction energies. Such materials may host novel fascinating phases of matter, such as fluid-like states called quantum spin liquids. GF magnets have, like all solid-state systems, randomly located impurities whose magnetic moments may ``freeze'' at low temperatures, making the system enter a spin-glass state. We analyse the available data for spin-glass transitions in GF materials and find a surprising trend: the glass-transition temperature grows with decreasing impurity concentration and reaches a finite value in the impurity-free limit at a previously unidentified, ``hidden'', energy scale. We propose a scenario in which the interplay of interactions and entropy leads to a crossover in the permeability of the medium that assists glass freezing at low temperatures. This low-temperature, ``eminuscent'', phase may obscure or even destroy the widely-sought spin-liquid states in rather clean systems.

Neutron Scattering Study of Fluctuating and Static Spin Correlations in the Anisotropic Spin Glass Fe$_2$TiO$_5$

The anisotropic spin glass transition, in which spin freezing is observed only along the c-axis in pseudobrookite Fe$_2$TiO$_5$, has long been perplexing because the Fe$^{3+}$ moments (d$^5$) are expected to be isotropic. Recently, neutron diffraction demonstrated that surfboard-shaped antiferromagnetic nanoregions coalesce above the glass transition temperature, T$_g$ $\approx$ 55 K, and a model was proposed in which the freezing of the fluctuations of the surfboards' magnetization leads to the anisotropic spin glass state. Given this new model, we have carried out high resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the spin-spin correlations to understand the temperature dependence of the intra-surfboard spin dynamics on neutron (picosecond) time-scales. Here, we report on the temperature-dependence of the spin fluctuations measured from single crystal Fe$_2$TiO$_5$. Strong quasi-elastic magnetic scattering, arising from intra-surfboard correlations, is observed well above T$_g$. The spin fluctuations possess a steep energy-wave vector relation and are indicative of strong exchange interactions, consistent with the large Curie-Weiss temperature. As the temperature approaches T$_g$ from above, a shift in spectral weight from inelastic to elastic scattering is observed. At various temperatures between 4 K and 300 K, a characteristic relaxation rate of the fluctuations is determined. Despite the freezing of the majority of the spin correlations, an inelastic contribution remains even at base temperature, signifying the presence of fluctuating intra-surfboard spin correlations to at least T/T$_g$ $\approx$ 0.1 consistent with a description of Fe$_2$TiO$_5$ as a hybrid between conventional and geometrically frustrated spin glasses.

The Geometrically Frustrated Spin Glass (Fe1-pGap)2TiO5

The unusual anisotropy of the spin glass transition in the pseudobrookite system Fe$_2$TiO$_5$ has been interpreted as arising from an induced, van der Waals-like, interaction among magnetic clusters. Here we present susceptibility ($χ$) and specific heat data (C) for Fe2TiO5 diluted with non-magnetic Ga, (Fe$_{1-p}$Ga$_p$)$_2$TiO$_5$, for disorder parameter p = 0, 0.11, and 0.42, and elastic neutron scattering data for p = 0.20. A uniform suppression of T{_g} is observed upon increasing p, along with a value of $χ(T_g)$ that increases as T$_g$ decreases, i.e. $dχ(T_g)/dT_g< 0$. We also observe C(T) $\propto$ T$^2$ in the low temperature limit. The observed behavior places (Fe$_{1-p}$Ga$_p$)$_2$TiO$_5$ in the category of a strongly geometrically frustrated spin glass.

Electron-phonon coupling in DyFeO3 revealed by infrared spectroscopy

We have investigated crystal field and phonon dynamics of the multiferroic orthoferrite DyFeO$_3$ via polarized infrared spectroscopy. Reflectance of single crystals was measured in the far- to mid-infrared spectral range at range of temperatures from 10-295 K. We observe a strongly anisotropic phonon spectrum which differs from earlier lattice dynamical calculations in its symmetry, as well as a mode with significant and unusual temperature dependence that we interpret as a coupled phonon-crystal-field excitation.

Superconductivity in Cu_xTiSe_2

Charge density waves (CDWs) are periodic modulations of the conduction electron density in solids. They are collective states that arise from intrinsic instabilities often present in low dimensional electronic systems. The layered dichalcogenides are the most well-studied examples, with TiSe_2 one of the first CDW-bearing materials known. The competition between CDW and superconducting collective electronic states at low temperatures has long been held and explored, and yet no chemical system has been previously reported where finely controlled chemical tuning allows this competition to be studied in detail. Here we report how, upon controlled intercalation of TiSe_2 with Cu to yield Cu_xTiSe_2, the CDW transition is continuously suppressed, and a new superconducting state emerges near x = 0.04, with a maximum T_c of 4.15 K found at x = 0.08. Cu_xTiSe_2 thus provides the first opportunity to study the CDW to Superconductivity transition in detail through an easily-controllable chemical parameter, and will provide new insights into the behavior of correlated electron systems.

Ultrafast Conductivity Dynamics in Pentacene Probed using Terahertz Spectroscopy

We present measurements of the transient photoconductivity in pentacene single crystals using optical-pump THz-probe spectroscopy. We have measured the temperature and fluence dependence of the mobility of the photoexcited charge carriers with picosecond resolution. The pentacene crystals were excited at 3.0 eV which is above the bandgap of ~2.2 eV and the induced change in the far-infrared transmission was measured. At 30 K, the carrier mobility is mu ~ 0.4 cm^2/Vs and decreases to mu ~ 0.2 cm^2/Vs at room temperature. The transient terahertz signal reveals the presence of free carriers that are trapped on the timescale of a few ps or less, possibly through the formation of excitons, small polarons, or trapping by impurities.

Limit of Field Effect Mobility on Pentacene Single Crystal

We report on fabrication and characterization of field effect transistors (FETs) on single-crystal pentacene. These FETs exhibit hole conductivity with room temperature effective mobility up to 0.30 cm2/Vs and on/off ratios up to 5*10^6. A negative gate voltage of -50V significantly decreases the activation energy (Ea) down to 0.143 eV near room temperature. Assuming thermal equilibrium between trapped and free carriers, from Ea = 0.143eV, we find the number of free carriers is only 0.4% of the total number of injected carriers. Along with effective mobility ~ 0.3 cm2/Vs this gives the intrinsic free carrier mobility of ~75 cm2/Vs.

beta-Cu3V2O8: Magnetic ordering in a spin-1/2 kagome-staircase lattice

The spin-1/2 Cu2+ ions in beta-Cu3V2O8 occupy the sites of a Kagome-staircase lattice, an anisotropic variant of the Kagome net: buckled layers and imbedded plaquettes of three edge-shared CuO4 squares break the ideal Kagome symmetry. Susceptibility and heat capacity measurements show the onset of short-range ordering at approximately 75 K, and a magnetic phase transition with the characteristics of antiferromagnetism at ~29 K. Comparison to the Curie Weiss theta (theta,CW = -135 K) indicates that the geometric frustration is largely relieved by the anisotropy. A ferromagnetic contribution to the magnetization below the ordering temperature and negative magnetization in zero-field cooled measurements at low fields are attributed to uncompensated spins at grain boundaries or defects.

Multiple Field-Induced Phase Transitions in a Geometrically-Frustrated Dipolar Magnet - Gd2Ti2O7

Field-driven phase transitions generally arise from competition between Zeeman energy and exchange or crystal-field anisotropy. Here we present the phase diagram of a frustrated pyrochlore magnet Gd2Ti2O7, where crystal field splitting is small compared to the dipolar energy. We find good agreement between zero-temperature critical fields and those obtained from a mean-field model. Here, dipolar interactions couple real-space and spin-space, so the transitions in Gd2Ti2O7 arise from field-induced "cooperative anisotropy" reflecting the broken spatial symmetries of the pyrochlore lattice.

Nonmonotonic Temperature-dependent Resistance in Low Density 2D Hole Gases

The low temperature longitudinal resistance-per-square Rxx(T) in ungated GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells of high peak hole mobility 1.7x10^6 cm^2/Vs is metallic for 2D hole density p as low as 3.8x10^9 cm-2. The electronic contribution to the resistance, R_{el}(T), is a nonmonotonic function of T, exhibiting thermal activation, R_{el}(T) ~ exp{-E_a/kT}, for kT<<E_F and a heretofore unnoted decay R_{el}(T) ~ 1/T for k_T>EF. The form of R_{el}(T) is independent of density, indicating a fundamental relationship between the low and high T scattering mechanisms in the metallic state.
