Condensed groups in product varieties

A finitely generated group $G$ is said to be condensed if its isomorphism class in the space of finitely generated marked groups has no isolated points. We prove that every product variety $\mathcal{UV}$, where $\mathcal{U}$ (respectively, $\mathcal{V}$) is a non-abelian (respectively, a non-locally-finite) variety, contains a condensed group. In particular, there exist condensed groups of finite exponent. As an application, we obtain some results on the structure of the isomorphism relation and elementary equivalence on the set of finitely generated groups in $\mathcal{UV}$.

Acylindrically hyperbolic groups

We say that a group $G$ is acylindrically hyperbolic if it admits a non-elementary acylindrical action on a hyperbolic space. We prove that the class of acylindrically hyperbolic groups coincides with many other classes studied in the literature, e.g., the class $C_{geom}$ introduced by Hamenstadt, the class of groups admitting a non-elementary weakly properly discontinuous action on a hyperbolic space in the sense of Bestvina and Fujiwara, and the class of groups with hyperbolically embedded subgroups studied by Dahmani, Guirardel, and the author. We also record some basic results about acylindrically hyperbolic groups for future use.

Transitivity degrees of countable groups and acylindrical hyperbolicity

We prove that every countable acylindrically hyperbolic group admits a highly transitive action with finite kernel. This theorem uniformly generalizes many previously known results and allows us to answer a question of Garion and Glassner on the existence of highly transitive faithful actions of mapping class groups. It also implies that in various geometric and algebraic settings, the transitivity degree of an infinite group can only take two values, namely $1$ and $\infty$. Here by transitivity degree of a group we mean the supremum of transitivity degrees of its faithful permutation representations. Further, for any countable group $G$ admitting a highly transitive faithful action, we prove the following dichotomy: Either $G$ contains a normal subgroup isomorphic to the infinite alternating group or $G$ resembles a free product from the model theoretic point of view. We apply this theorem to obtain new results about universal theory and mixed identities of acylindrically hyperbolic groups. Finally, we discuss some open problems.

Induced quasi-cocycles on groups with hyperbolically embedded subgroups

Let G be a group, H a hyperbolically embedded subgroup of G, V a normed G-module, U an H-invariant submodule of V. We propose a general construction which allows to extend 1-quasi-cocycles on H with values in U to 1-quasi-cocycles on G with values in V. As an application, we show that every group G with a non-degenerate hyperbolically embedded subgroup has dim H^2_b (G, l^p(G))=\infty for p\in [1, \infty). This covers many previously known results in a uniform way. Applying our extension to quasimorphisms and using Bavard duality, we also show that hyperbolically embedded subgroups are undistorted with respect to the stable commutator length.

Normal generation and $\ell^2$-betti numbers of groups

The \emph{normal rank} of a group is the minimal number of elements whose normal closure coincides with the group. We study the relation between the normal rank of a group and its first $\ell^2$-Betti number and conjecture that inequality $β_1^{(2)}(G)$ does not exceed normal rank minus 1 for torsion free groups. The conjecture is proved for limits of left-orderable amenable groups. On the other hand, for every $n\ge 2$ and every $\e>0$, we give an example of a simple group $Q$ (with torsion) such that $β_1^{(2)}(Q) \geq n-1-ε$. These groups also provide examples of simple groups of rank exactly $n$ for every $n\ge 2$; existence of such examples for $n> 3$ was unknown until now.

Spectroscopy of diagnostically-important magnetic-dipole lines in highly-charged 3d$^n$ ions of tungsten

An electron beam ion trap (EBIT) is used to measure extreme ultraviolet spectra between 10 nm and 25 nm from highly-charged ions of tungsten with an open 3d shell (W XLVIII through W LVI). We found that almost all strong lines are due to the forbidden magnetic-dipole (M1) transitions within $3d^n$ ground configurations. A total of 37 spectral lines are identified for the first time using detailed collisional-radiative (CR) modeling of the EBIT spectra. A new level-merging scheme for compactification of rate equations is described. The CR simulations for Maxwellian plasmas show that several line ratios involving these M1 lines can be used to reliably diagnose temperature and density in hot fusion devices.
