Photo-induced insulator-to-metal transition and coherent acoustic phonon propagation in LaCoO$_3$ thin films explored by femtosecond pump-probe ellipsometry

We have studied ultrafast dynamics of thin films of LaCoO$_3$ and La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_3$ with femtosecond pump-probe ellipsometry in the energy range of 1.6-3.4 eV. We have observed a large pump-induced transfer of spectral weight in LaCoO$_3$ that corresponds to an insulator-to-metal transition. The photo-induced metallic state initially relaxes via a fast process with a decay constant of about 200 fs. Both LaCoO$_3$ and La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_3$ exhibit a significant secondary transient structure in the 1-30 ps range. Results of measurements on films with different thicknesses demonstrate that it corresponds to a propagation of an acoustic strain pulse. On timescales longer than 100 ps, heat diffusion to the substrate takes place that can be modelled with a bi-exponential decay.

Optical Signature of a Crossover from Mott- to Slater-type Gap in Sr$_2$Ir$_{1-x}$Rh$_{x}$O$_{4}$

With optical spectroscopy we provide evidence that the insulator-metal transition in Sr$_2$Ir$_{1-x}$Rh$_{x}$O$_{4}$ occurs close to a crossover from the Mott- to the Slater-type. The Mott-gap at $x = 0$ persists to high temperature and evolves without an anomaly across the Néel temperature, $T_N$. Upon Rh-doping, it collapses rather rapidly and vanishes around $x = 0.055$. Notably, just as the Mott-gap vanishes yet another gap appears that is of the Slater-type and develops right below $T_N$. This Slater-gap is only partial and is accompanied by a reduced scattering rate of the remaining free carriers, similar as in the parent compounds of the iron arsenide superconductors.

Superconductivity-induced transverse plasma mode and phonon anomaly in the $c$-axis response of the bilayer compound RbCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$

With infrared spectroscopy we studied the out-of-plane ($c$-axis) response of the iron arsenide superconductor ACa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ (A = Rb,Cs) which has a bilayer structure similar to the high $T_c$ cuprates YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO) and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$ (Bi2212). In analogy to the cuprates, we observe a superconductivity-induced transverse plasma mode (tPM) and a phonon anomaly that are both signatures of local electric field effects that arise from a large difference between the local conductivities in the intra- and inter-bilayer regions. Using a multilayer model developed for the cuprates, we obtain a good description of the $c$-axis response and derive the local conductivities at $T \simeq T_c$ of $σ_1^{\mathrm{bl}}(ω\rightarrow 0) \simeq$ 1\,000 $Ω^{-1}\mathrm{cm}^{-1}$ and $σ_1^{\mathrm{int}}(ω\rightarrow 0) \simeq$ 15 $Ω^{-1}\mathrm{cm}^{-1}$, respectively, that are similar to the ones previously found in underdoped YBCO. Different from the cuprates, we find no evidence of a normal state pseudogap in terms of a partial suppression of the low-energy electronic states that sets in already well above $T_c$. There is also no clear sign of an onset of precursor superconducting pairing correlations well above $T_c \simeq$ 30~K. This highlights that the pseudogap and the precursor superconducting pairing well above $T_c$ are unique features of the cuprates with their strong electronic correlations and, for example, not just the result of a strongly anisotropic electronic response due to the layered crystal structure.

X-ray absorption study of the ferromagnetic Cu moment at the $\mathbf{{YBa_2Cu_3O_7}/{La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3}}$ interface and the variation of its exchange interaction with the Mn moment

With x-ray absorption spectroscopy and polarized neutron reflectometry we studied how the magnetic proximity effect at the interface between the cuprate high-$T_C$ superconductor $\mathrm{YBa_2Cu_3O_7}$ (YBCO) and the ferromagnet $\mathrm{La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3}$ (LCMO) is related to the electronic and magnetic properties of the LCMO layers. In particular, we explored how the magnitude of the ferromagnetic Cu moment on the YBCO side depends on the strength of the antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange coupling with the Mn moment on the LCMO side. We found that the Cu moment remains sizeable if the AF coupling with the Mn moments is strongly reduced or even entirely suppressed. The ferromagnetic order of the Cu moments thus seems to be intrinsic to the interfacial CuO$_2$ planes and related to a weakly ferromagnetic intra-planar exchange interaction. The latter is discussed in terms of the partial occupation of the Cu $3d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals, which occurs in the context of the so-called orbital reconstruction of the interfacial Cu ions.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy study of the electronic and magnetic proximity effects in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$/La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ and La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$/La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ multilayers

With x-ray absorption spectroscopy we investigated the orbital reconstruction and the induced ferromagnetic moment of the interfacial Cu atoms in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$/La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ (YBCO/LCMO) and La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$/La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ (LSCO/LCMO) multilayers. We demonstrate that these electronic and magnetic proximity effects are coupled and are common to these cuprate/manganite multilayers. Moreover, we show that they are closely linked to a specific interface termination with a direct Cu-O-Mn bond. We furthermore show that the intrinsic hole doping of the cuprate layers and the local strain due to the lattice mismatch between the cuprate and manganite layers are not of primary importance. These findings underline the central role of the covalent bonding at the cuprate/manganite interface in defining the spin-electronic properties.

Low-energy interband transitions in the infrared response of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2

We studied the doping and temperature (T) dependence of the infrared (IR) response of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystals. We show that a weak band around 1000 cm-1, that was previously interpreted in terms of interaction of the charge carriers with magnetic excitations or of a pseudogap, is rather related to low-energy interband transitions. Specifically, we show that this band exhibits a similar doping and T-dependence as the hole pockets seen by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Notably, we find that it vanishes as a function of doping near the critical point where superconductivity is suppressed in the overdoped regime. Our IR data thus provide bulk specific information (complementary to the surface sensitive ARPES) for a Lifshitz transition. Our IR data also reveal a second low-energy band around 2300 cm-1 which further emphasizes the necessity to consider the multiband nature of these iron arsenides in the analysis of the optical response.

Electronic structure of InAs quantum dots with GaAsSb strain reducing layer: Localization of holes and its effect on the optical properties

The electronic structure of InAs quantum dots covered with the GaAs(1-y)Sb(y) strain reducing layer has been studied using the k.p theory. We explain previous experimental observations of the red shift of the photoluminescence emission with increasing y and its blue shift with increasing excitation power. For y>0.19 type-II dots are formed with holes localized in the GaAsSb close to the dot base; two segments at opposite sides of the dot, forming molecular-like states, result from the piezoelectric field. We also propose an experiment that could be used to identify the hole localization using a vertical electric field.

Excitation intensity dependence of photoluminescence spectra of SiGe quantum dots grown on prepatterned Si substrates: Evidence for biexcitonic transition

The pumping intensity (I) dependence of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of perfectly laterally two-dimensionally ordered SiGe quantum dots on Si(001) substrates was studied. The PL results from recombinations of holes localized in the SiGe quantum dots and electrons localized due to the strain field in the surrounding Si matrix. The analysis of the spectra revealed several distinct bands, attributed to phonon-assisted recombination and no-phonon recombination of the excitonic ground state and of the excited excitonic states, which all exhibit a linear I dependence of the PL intensity. At approximately I>3W/cm^2, additional bands with a nearly quadratic I dependence appear in the PL spectra, resulting from biexcitonic transitions. These emerging PL contributions shift the composite no-phonon PL band of the SiGe quantum dots to higher energies. The experimentally obtained energies of the no-phonon transitions are in good agreement with the exciton and biexciton energies calculated using the envelope function approximation and the configuration interaction method.

Evidence of precursor superconductivity as high as 180 K from infrared spectroscopy

We show that a multilayer analysis of the infrared c-axis response of RBa2Cu3O7-d (R=Y, Gd, Eu) provides important new information about the anomalous normal state properties of underdoped cuprate high temperature superconductors. Besides competing correlations which give rise to a pseudogap that depletes the low-energy electronic states below T*>>Tc, it enables us to identify the onset of a precursor superconducting state below Tons>Tc. We map out the doping phase diagram of Tons which reaches a maximum of ~180 K at strong underdoping and present magnetic field dependent data which confirm our conclusions.

Microscopic gauge-invariant theory of the c-axis infrared response of bilayer cuprate superconductors and the origin of the superconductivity induced absorption bands

We report on results of our theoretical study of the c-axis infrared conductivity of bilayer high-Tc cuprate superconductors using a microscopic model involving the bilayer-split (bonding and antibonding) bands. An emphasis is on the gauge-invariance of the theory, which turns out to be essential for the physical understanding of the electrodynamics of these compounds. The description of the optical response involves local (intra-bilayer and inter-bilayer) current densities and local conductivities. The local conductivities are obtained using a microscopic theory, where the quasiparticles of the two bands are coupled to spin fluctuations. The coupling leads to superconductivity and is described at the level of generalized Eliashberg theory. Also addressed is the simpler case of quasiparticles coupled by a separable and nonretarded interaction. The gauge invariance of the theory is achieved by including a suitable class of vertex corrections. The resulting response of the model is studied in detail and an interpretation of two superconductivity-induced peaks in the experimental data of the real part of the c-axis conductivity is proposed. The peak around 400/cm is attributed to a collective mode of the intra-bilayer regions, that is an analogue of the Bogolyubov-Anderson mode playing a crucial role in the theory of the longitudinal response of superconductors. For small values of the bilayer splitting, its nature is similar to that of the transverse plasmon of the phenomenological Josephson superlattice model. The peak around 1000/cm is interpreted as a pair breaking-feature that is related to the electronic coupling through the spacing layers separating the bilayers.

Selfconsistent gauge-invariant theory of in-plane infrared response of high-Tc cuprate superconductors involving spin fluctuations

We report on results of our theoretical study of the in-plane infrared conductivity of the high-Tc cuprate superconductors using the model where charged planar quasiparticles are coupled to spin fluctuations. The computations include both the renormalization of the quasiparticles and the corresponding modification of the current-current vertex function (vertex correction), which ensures gauge invariance of the theory and local charge conservation in the system. The incorporation of the vertex corrections leads to an increase of the total intraband optical spectral weight (SW) at finite frequencies, a SW transfer from far infrared to mid infrared, a significant reduction of the SW of the superconducting condensate, and an amplification of characteristic features in the superconducting state spectra of the inverse scattering rate 1/tau. We also discuss the role of selfconsistency and propose a new interpretation of a kink occurring in the experimental low temperature spectra of 1/tau around 1000cm^{-1}.

Spectroscopic distinction between the normal state pseudogap and the superconducting gap of cuprate high T_{c} superconductors

We report on broad-band infrared ellipsometry measurements of the c-axis conductivity of underdoped RBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-d} (R=Y, Nd, and La) single crystals. Our data provide a detailed account of the spectral weight (SW) redistributions due to the normal state pseudogap (PG) and the superconducting (SC) gap. They show that these phenomena involve different energy scales, exhibit distinct doping dependencies and thus are likely of different origin. In particular, the SW redistribution in the PG state closely resembles the one of a conventional charge- or spin density wave (CDW or SDW) system.

The anomaly of the oxygen bond-bending mode at 320 cm$^{-1}$ and the additional absorption peak in the c-axis infrared conductivity of underdoped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ single crystals revisited by ellipsometricmeasurements

We have performed ellipsometric measurements of the far-infrared c-axis dielectric response of underdoped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ single crystals. Here we report a detailed analysis of the temperature-dependent renormalization of the oxygen bending phonon mode at 320 cm$^{-1}$ and the formation of the additional absorption peak around 400-500 cm$^{-1}$. For a strongly underdoped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.5}$ crystal with T$_{c}$=52 K we find that, in agreement with previous reports based on conventional reflection measurements, the gradual onset of both features occurs well above T$_{c}$ at T*$\sim $150 K. Contrary to some of these reports, however, our data establish that the phonon anomaly and the formation of the additional peak exhibit very pronounced and steep changes right at T$_{c}$. For a less underdoped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.75}$ crystal with T$_{c}$=80 K, the onset temperature of the phonon anomaly almost coincides with T$_{c}$. Also in contrast to some previous reports, we find for both crystals that a sizeable fraction of the spectral weight of the additional absorption peak cannot be accounted for by the spectral-weight loss of the phonon modes but instead arises from a redistribution of the electronic continuum. Our ellipsometric data are consistent with a model where the bilayer cuprate compounds are treated as a superlattice of intra- and inter-bilayer Josephson-junctions.
