Dynamics of surface electrons in a topological insulator: cyclotron resonance at room temperature

The ability to manipulate the surface states of topological insulators using electric or magnetic fields under ambient conditions is a key step toward their integration into future electronic and optoelectronic devices. Here, we demonstrate - using cyclotron resonance measurements on a tin-doped BiSbTe$_2$S topological insulator - that moderate magnetic fields can quantize massless surface electrons into Landau levels even at room temperature. This finding suggests that surface-state electrons can behave as long-lived quasiparticles at unexpectedly high temperatures.

Infrared spectroscopy study of the in-plane response of YBa2Cu3O6.6 in magnetic fields up to 30 Tesla

With Terahertz and Infrared spectroscopy we studied the in-plane response of an underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.6 single crystal with Tc=58(1) K in high magnetic fields up to B=30 Tesla applied along the c-axis. Our goal was to investigate the field-induced suppression of superconductivity and to observe the signatures of the three dimensional (3d) incommensurate copper charge density wave (Cu-CDW) which was previously shown to develop at such high magnetic fields. Our study confirms that a B-field in excess of 20 Tesla gives rise to a full suppression of the macroscopic response of the superconducting condensate. However, it reveals surprisingly weak signatures of the 3d Cu-CDW at high magnetic fields. At 30 Tesla there is only a weak reduction of the spectral weight of the Drude-response (by about 3%) that is accompanied by an enhancement of two narrow electronic modes around 90 and 240 cm-1, that are interpreted in terms of pinned phase modes of the CDW along the a- and b-direction, respectively, and of the so-called mid-infrared (MIR) band. The pinned phased modes and the MIR band are strong features already without magnetic field which suggests that prominent but short-ranged and slowly fluctuating (compared to the picosecond IR-time scale) CDW correlations exist all along, i.e., even at zero magnetic field.

Infrared study of the multiband low-energy excitations of the topological antiferromagnet MnBi$_2$Te$_4$

With infrared spectroscopy we studied the bulk electronic properties of the topological antiferromagnet MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ with $T_N \simeq 25~\mathrm{K}$. With the support of band structure calculations, we assign the intra- and interband excitations and determine the band gap of $E_g \approx$ 0.17 eV. We also obtain evidence for two types of conduction bands with light and very heavy carriers. The multiband free carrier response gives rise to an unusually strong increase of the combined plasma frequency, $ω_{\mathrm{pl}}$, below 300 K. The band reconstruction below $T_N$, yields an additional increase of $ω_{\mathrm{pl}}$ and a splitting of the transition between the two conduction bands by about 54 meV. Our study thus reveals a complex and strongly temperature dependent multi-band low-energy response that has important implications for the study of the surface states and device applications.

Muon spin rotation and infrared spectroscopy study of $Ba_{1-x}Na_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2}$

The magnetic and superconducting properties of a series of underdoped $Ba_{1-x}Na_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2}$ (BNFA) single crystals with $0.19 \leq x\leq 0.34$ has been investigated with the complementary muon-spin-rotation ($μ$SR) and infrared spectroscopy techniques. The focus has been on the different antiferromagnetic states in the underdoped regime and their competition with superconductivity, especially for the ones with a tetragonal crystal structure and a so-called double-$Q$ magnetic order. Besides the collinear state with a spatially inhomogeneous spin-charge-density wave (i-SCDW) order at $x=0.24$ and $0.26$, that was previously identified in BNFA, we obtained evidence for an orthomagnetic state with a "hedgehog"-type spin vortex crystal (SVC) structure at $x=0.32$ and $0.34$. Whereas in the former i-SCDW state the infrared spectra show no sign of a superconducting response down to the lowest measured temperature of about 10K, in the SVC state there is a strong superconducting response similar to the one at optimum doping. The magnetic order is strongly suppressed here in the superconducting state and at $x=0.34$ there is even a partial re-entrance into a paramagnetic state at $T<<T_c$.

Optical Signature of a Crossover from Mott- to Slater-type Gap in Sr$_2$Ir$_{1-x}$Rh$_{x}$O$_{4}$

With optical spectroscopy we provide evidence that the insulator-metal transition in Sr$_2$Ir$_{1-x}$Rh$_{x}$O$_{4}$ occurs close to a crossover from the Mott- to the Slater-type. The Mott-gap at $x = 0$ persists to high temperature and evolves without an anomaly across the Néel temperature, $T_N$. Upon Rh-doping, it collapses rather rapidly and vanishes around $x = 0.055$. Notably, just as the Mott-gap vanishes yet another gap appears that is of the Slater-type and develops right below $T_N$. This Slater-gap is only partial and is accompanied by a reduced scattering rate of the remaining free carriers, similar as in the parent compounds of the iron arsenide superconductors.

Superconductivity-induced transverse plasma mode and phonon anomaly in the $c$-axis response of the bilayer compound RbCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$

With infrared spectroscopy we studied the out-of-plane ($c$-axis) response of the iron arsenide superconductor ACa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ (A = Rb,Cs) which has a bilayer structure similar to the high $T_c$ cuprates YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO) and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$ (Bi2212). In analogy to the cuprates, we observe a superconductivity-induced transverse plasma mode (tPM) and a phonon anomaly that are both signatures of local electric field effects that arise from a large difference between the local conductivities in the intra- and inter-bilayer regions. Using a multilayer model developed for the cuprates, we obtain a good description of the $c$-axis response and derive the local conductivities at $T \simeq T_c$ of $σ_1^{\mathrm{bl}}(ω\rightarrow 0) \simeq$ 1\,000 $Ω^{-1}\mathrm{cm}^{-1}$ and $σ_1^{\mathrm{int}}(ω\rightarrow 0) \simeq$ 15 $Ω^{-1}\mathrm{cm}^{-1}$, respectively, that are similar to the ones previously found in underdoped YBCO. Different from the cuprates, we find no evidence of a normal state pseudogap in terms of a partial suppression of the low-energy electronic states that sets in already well above $T_c$. There is also no clear sign of an onset of precursor superconducting pairing correlations well above $T_c \simeq$ 30~K. This highlights that the pseudogap and the precursor superconducting pairing well above $T_c$ are unique features of the cuprates with their strong electronic correlations and, for example, not just the result of a strongly anisotropic electronic response due to the layered crystal structure.

Granular superconductivity and magnetic-field-driven recovery of macroscopic coherence in a cuprate/manganite multilayer

We show that in Pr$ _{0.5} $La$ _{0.2} $Ca$ _{0.3} $MnO$ _{3} $/YBa$ _{2} $Cu$ _{3} $O$ _{7} $ (PLCMO/YBCO) multilayers the low temperature state of YBCO is very resistive and resembles the one of a granular superconductor or a frustrated Josephson-junction network. Notably, a coherent superconducting response can be restored with a large magnetic field which also suppresses the charge-orbital order in PLCMO. This coincidence suggests that the granular superconducting state of YBCO is induced by the charge-orbital order of PLCMO. The coupling mechanism and the nature of the induced inhomogeneous state in YBCO remain to be understood.

X-ray absorption study of the ferromagnetic Cu moment at the $\mathbf{{YBa_2Cu_3O_7}/{La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3}}$ interface and the variation of its exchange interaction with the Mn moment

With x-ray absorption spectroscopy and polarized neutron reflectometry we studied how the magnetic proximity effect at the interface between the cuprate high-$T_C$ superconductor $\mathrm{YBa_2Cu_3O_7}$ (YBCO) and the ferromagnet $\mathrm{La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3}$ (LCMO) is related to the electronic and magnetic properties of the LCMO layers. In particular, we explored how the magnitude of the ferromagnetic Cu moment on the YBCO side depends on the strength of the antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange coupling with the Mn moment on the LCMO side. We found that the Cu moment remains sizeable if the AF coupling with the Mn moments is strongly reduced or even entirely suppressed. The ferromagnetic order of the Cu moments thus seems to be intrinsic to the interfacial CuO$_2$ planes and related to a weakly ferromagnetic intra-planar exchange interaction. The latter is discussed in terms of the partial occupation of the Cu $3d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals, which occurs in the context of the so-called orbital reconstruction of the interfacial Cu ions.

Low-energy interband transitions in the infrared response of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2

We studied the doping and temperature (T) dependence of the infrared (IR) response of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystals. We show that a weak band around 1000 cm-1, that was previously interpreted in terms of interaction of the charge carriers with magnetic excitations or of a pseudogap, is rather related to low-energy interband transitions. Specifically, we show that this band exhibits a similar doping and T-dependence as the hole pockets seen by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Notably, we find that it vanishes as a function of doping near the critical point where superconductivity is suppressed in the overdoped regime. Our IR data thus provide bulk specific information (complementary to the surface sensitive ARPES) for a Lifshitz transition. Our IR data also reveal a second low-energy band around 2300 cm-1 which further emphasizes the necessity to consider the multiband nature of these iron arsenides in the analysis of the optical response.

Optical probe of ferroelectric order in bulk and thin film perovskite titanates

We have measured the temperature dependence of the direct band gap, $E_g$, in SrTi$^{16}$O$_3$ and BaTiO$_3$ and related materials with quantum-paraelectric and ferroelectric properties using optical spectroscopy. We show that $E_g$ exhibits an anomalous temperature dependence with pronounced changes in the vicinity of the ferroelectric transition that can be accounted for in terms of the Fröhlich electron-phonon interaction with an optical phonon mode, the so-called soft mode. We demonstrate that these characteristic changes of $E_g$ can be readily detected even in very thin films of SrTi$^{16}$O$_3$ with a strain-induced ferroelectric order. Optical spectroscopy thus can be used as a relatively simple but sensitive probe of ferroelectric order in very thin films of these titanates and probably also in subsequent multilayers and devices.

Electric-field-induced pyroelectric order and localization of the confined electrons in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures

With infrared ellipsometry, x-ray diffraction, and electric transport measurements we investigated the electric-field-effect on the confined electrons at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface. We obtained evidence that the localization of the electrons at low temperature and negative gate voltage is induced, or at least strongly enhanced, by a pyroelectric phase transition in SrTiO3 which strongly reduces the lattice polarizability and the subsequent Coulomb screening. In particular, we show that the charge localisation and the polar order of SrTiO3 both develop below about 50 K and exhibit similar, unipolar hysteresis loops as a function of the gate voltage. Our findings suggest that the pyroelectric order also plays an important role in the quantum phase transition at very low temperatures where superconductivity is suppressed by an electric field.

Optical identification of hybrid magnetic and electric excitations in Dy3Fe5O12 garnet

Far-infrared spectra of magneto-dielectric Dy3Fe5O12 garnet were studied between 13 and 100 cm-1 and at low temperatures between 5 and 80 K. A combination of transmission, reflectivity, and rotating analyzer ellipsometry was used to unambiguously identify the type of the dipole activity of the infrared modes. In addition to purely dielectric and magnetic modes, we observed several hybrid modes with a mixed magnetic and electric dipole activity. These modes originate from the superexchange between magnetic moments of Fe and Dy ions. Using 4x4 matrix formalism for materials with Mu=/=1, we modeled the experimental optical spectra and determined the far-infrared dielectric and magnetic permeability functions. The matching condition Mu(Wh)*Se=Eps(Wh)*Sm for the oscillator strengths Se(m) explains the observed vanishing of certain hybrid modes at Wh in reflectivity.

Coexistence and competition of magnetism and superconductivity on the nanometer scale in underdoped BaFe1.89Co0.11As2

We report muon spin rotation (muSR) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy experiments on underdoped BaFe1.89Co0.11As2 which show that bulk magnetism and superconductivity (SC) coexist and compete on the nanometer length scale. Our combined data reveal a bulk magnetic order, likely due to an incommensurate spin density wave (SDW), which develops below Tmag \approx 32 K and becomes reduced in magnitude (but not in volume) below Tc = 21.7 K. A slowly fluctuating precursor of the SDW seems to develop alrady below the structural transition at Ts \approx 50 K. The bulk nature of SC is established by the muSR data which show a bulk SC vortex lattice and the IR data which reveal that the majority of low-energy states is gapped and participates in the condensate at T << Tc.
