Evidence for a three-dimensional quantum spin liquid in PbCuTe$_{2}$O$_{6}$

The quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a highly entangled magnetic state characterized by the absence of static magnetism in its ground state. Instead, the spins fluctuate in a highly correlated way down to the lowest temperatures. The QSL is very rare and is confined to a few specific cases where the interactions between the magnetic ions cannot be simultaneously satisfied (known as frustration). Lattices with magnetic ions in triangular or tetrahedral arrangements which interact via isotropic antiferromagnetic interactions can generate such a frustration. Three-dimensional isotropic spin liquids have mostly been sought in materials where the magnetic ions form pyrochlore or hyperkagome lattices. Here we present a three-dimensional lattice called the hyper-hyperkagome that enables spin liquid behaviour and manifests in the compound PbCuTe$_{2}$O$_{6}$. Using a combination of experiment and theory we show that this system exhibits signs of being a quantum spin liquid with no detectable static magnetism together with the presence of diffuse continua in the magnetic spectrum suggestive of fractional spinon excitations.

Magnetic structure of a new quantum magnet SrCuTe$_2$O$_6$

SrCuTe$_2$O$_6$ consists of a 3-dimensional arrangement of spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Cu$^{2+}$ ions. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd neighbor interactions respectively couple Cu$^{2+}$ moments into a network of isolated triangles, a highly frustrated hyperkagome lattice consisting of corner sharing triangles and antiferromagnetic chains. Of these, the chain interaction dominates in SrCuTe$_2$O$_6$ while the other two interactions lead to frustrated inter-chain coupling giving rise to long range magnetic order at suppressed temperatures. In this paper, we investigate the magnetic properties in SrCuTe$_2$O$_6$ using muon relaxation spectroscopy and neutron diffraction and present the low temperature magnetic structure.

Magnetically driven loss of centrosymmetry in metallic Pb2CoOsO6

We report magnetic, transport, neutron diffraction, and muon spin rotation data showing that Pb$_2$CoOsO$_6$, a newly synthesized metallic double-perovskite with a centrosymmetric space group at room temperature, exhibits a continuous second-order phase transition at 45 K to a magnetically ordered state with a non-centrosymmetric space group. The absence of inversion symmetry is very uncommon in metals, particularly metallic oxides. In contrast to the recently reported ferroelectric-like structural transition in LiOsO$_3$, the phase transition in Pb$_2$CoOsO$_6$ is driven by a long-range collinear antiferromagnetic order, with propagation vector $\textbf{k} = (\frac{1}{2},0,\frac{1}{2})$, which relieves the frustration associated with the symmetry of themagnetic exchanges. This magnetically-driven loss of inversion symmetry represents a new frontier in the search for novel metallic behavior.

Robustness of helical magnetic structure under external pressure in Fe-doped MnNiGe alloy

We have investigated the detailed magnetic structure of a Fe-doped MnNiGe alloy of nominal composition MnNi$_{0.75}$Fe$_{0.25}$Ge by ambient and high pressure (6 kbar) neutron powder diffraction study. The alloy undergoes a martensitic phase transition between 230 K and 275 K. The low-temperature martensite phase orders antiferromagnetically with helical modulation of Mn-spins. At 1.5 K, the incommensurate propagation vector $\bf k$ is found to be (0.1790(1),0,0), and it remains almost unchanged with temperature under ambient condition. The Application of external pressure ($P$) reduces the martensitic transition temperature and results in a significant change in the incommensurate magnetic propagation vector. At 10 K, with 6 kbar of external pressure, the incommensurate magnetic structure of the alloy stabilizes with $\bf k$ = (0.1569(1),0,0). Interestingly, the strong temperature dependence of $\bf k$ in the presence of external $P$ has also been observed.

Bulk superconductivity at 84 K in the strongly overdoped regime of cuprates

By means of magnetization, specific heat and muon-spin relaxation measurements, we investigate high-pressure oxidized \mohpo, in which overdoping is achieved up to $p \sim 0.45$ hole/Cu, well beyond the $T_c - p$ superconducting dome of cuprates, where Fermi liquid behavior is expected. Surprisingly, we find bulk superconductivity with $T_c$=84 K and superfluid density similar to those of optimally doped Y123. On the other hand, specific heat data display a large electronic contribution at low temperature, comparable to that of nonsuperconducting overdoped La214. These results point at an unusual high-$T_c$ phase with a large fraction of unpaired holes. Further experiments may assess the Fermi liquid properties of the present phase, which would put into question the paradigm that the high $T_c$ of cuprates originates from a non-Fermi liquid ground state.

$μ$SR and Neutron Diffraction Investigations on Reentrant Ferromagnetic Superconductor Eu(Fe{0.86}Ir{0.14})2As2

Results of muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and neutron powder diffraction measurements on a reentrant superconductor Eu(Fe$_{0.86}$Ir$_{0.14}$)$_2$As$_2$ are presented. Eu(Fe$_{0.86}$Ir$_{0.14}$)$_2$As$_2$ exhibits superconductivity at $T_{\rm c\,on} \approx 22.5$~K competing with long range ordered Eu$^{+2}$ moments below $\approx 18$ K. A reentrant behavior (manifested by nonzero resistivity in the temperature range 10--17.5 K) results from an exquisite competition between the superconductivity and magnetic order. The zero field $μ$SR data confirm the long range magnetic ordering below $T_{\rm Eu} = 18.7(2)$ K. The transition temperature is found to increase with increasing magnetic field in longitudinal field $μ$SR which along with the neutron diffraction results, suggests the transition to be ferromagnetic. The neutron diffraction data reveal a clear presence of magnetic Bragg peaks below $T_{\rm Eu}$ which could be indexed with propagation vector k = (0, 0, 0), confirming a long range magnetic ordering in agreement with $μ$SR data. Our analysis of the magnetic structure reveals an ordered magnetic moment of $6.29(5)\,μ_{\rm B}$ (at 1.8 K) on the Eu atoms and they form a ferromagnetic structure with moments aligned along the $c$-axis. No change in the magnetic structure is observed in the reentrant or superconducting phases and the magnetic structure remains same for 1.8 K $\leq T \leq T_{\rm Eu}$. No clear evidence of structural transition or Fe moment ordering was found.

Anisotropy tuned magnetic order in pyrochlore iridates

The magnetic behavior of polycrystalline samples of Er$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ and Tb$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ pyrochlores is studied by magnetization measurements and neutron diffraction. Both compounds undergo a magnetic transition at 140 and 130 K respectively, associated with an ordering of the Ir sublattice, signaled by thermomagnetic hysteresis. In Tb$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, we show that the Ir molecular field leads the Tb magnetic moments to order below 40 K in the all-in/all-out magnetic arrangement. No sign of magnetic long range order on the Er sublattice is evidenced in Er$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ down to 0.6 K where a spin freezing is detected. These contrasting behaviors result from the competition between the Ir molecular field and the different single-ion anisotropy of the rare-earths on which it is acting. Additionally, this strongly supports the all-in/all-out iridium magnetic order.

Anomalous change of the magnetic moment direction by hole doping in CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$

We present a detailed investigation of the hole (3\% Re) doping effect on the polycrystalline CeRu$_{2}$Al$_{10}$ sample by magnetization, heat capacity, resistivity, muon spin rotation ($μ$SR), and neutron scattering (both elastic and inelastic) measurements. CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ is an exceptional cerium compound with an unusually high Neel temperature of 27 K. Here we study the stability of the unusual magnetic order by means of controlled doping, and we uncover further surprising attributes of this phase transition. The heat capacity, resistivity and $μ$SR measurements reveal an onset of magnetic ordering below 23 K, while a broad peak at 31 K (i.e. above $T_N$), has been observed in the temperature dependent susceptibility, indicating an opening of a spin gap above $T_N$. Our important finding, from the neutron diffraction, is that the compound orders antiferromagnetically with a propagation vector $\bf k$ = (1 0 0) and the ordered state moment is 0.20(1)$μ_B$ along the $b-$axis. This is in sharp contrast to the undoped compound, which shows AFM ordering at 27 K with the ordered moment of 0.39(3)$μ_B$ along the $c-$axis. Similar to CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ our inelastic neutron scattering study on the Re doped shows a sharp spin gap-type excitation near 8 meV at 5 K, but with slightly reduced intensity compared to the undoped compound. Further the excitation broadens and shifts to lower energy ($\le$ 4 meV) near 35 K. These results suggest that the low temperature magnetic properties of the hole doped sample is governed by the competition between the anisotropic hybridization effect and crystal field anisotropy as observed in hole-doped CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$.

Coupling of magnetic order to planar Bi electrons in the anisotropic Dirac metals AMnBi2 (A = Sr, Ca)

We report powder and single crystal neutron diffraction measurements of the magnetic order in AMnBi2 (A = Sr and Ca), two layered manganese pnictides with anisotropic Dirac fermions on a Bi square net. Both materials are found to order at TN approx 300 K in k = 0 antiferromagnetic structures, with ordered Mn moments at T = 10 K of approximately 3.8 muB aligned along the c axis. The magnetic structures are Neel-type within the Mn--Bi layers but the inter-layer ordering is different, being antiferromagnetic in SrMnBi2 and ferromagnetic in CaMnBi2. This allows a mean-field coupling of the magnetic order to Bi electrons in CaMnBi2 but not in SrMnBi2. We find clear evidence that magnetic order influences electrical transport. First principles calculations explain the experimental observations and suggest that the mechanism for different inter-layer ordering in the two compounds is the competition between the anteiferromagnetic superexchange and ferromagnetic double exchange carried by itinerant Bi electrons.

Luttinger-Liquid Behavior in the Alternating Spin-Chain System Copper Nitrate

We determine the phase diagram of copper nitrate Cu(NO$_3$)$_2\cdot$2.5D$_2$O in the context of quantum phase transitions and novel states of matter. We establish this compound as an ideal candidate to study quasi-1D Luttinger liquids, 3D Bose-Einstein-Condensation of triplons, and the crossover between 1D and 3D physics. Magnetocaloric effect, magnetization, and neutron scattering data provide clear evidence for transitions into a Luttinger liquid regime and a 3D long-range ordered phase as function of field and temperature. Theoretical simulations of this model material allow us to fully establish the phase diagram and to discuss it in the context of dimerized spin systems.

Tetragonal phase of epitaxial room-temperature antiferromagnet CuMnAs

Recent studies have demonstrated the potential of antiferromagnets as the active component in spintronic devices. This is in contrast to their current passive role as pinning layers in hard disk read heads and magnetic memories. Here we report the epitaxial growth of a new high-temperature antiferromagnetic material, tetragonal CuMnAs, which exhibits excellent crystal quality, chemical order and compatibility with existing semiconductor technologies. We demonstrate its growth on the III-V semiconductors GaAs and GaP, and show that the structure is also lattice matched to Si. Neutron diffraction shows collinear antiferromagnetic order with a high Neél temperature. Combined with our demonstration of room-temperature exchange coupling in a CuMnAs/Fe bilayer, we conclude that tetragonal CuMnAs films are suitable candidate materials for antiferromagnetic spintronics.
