Nodeless time-reversal symmetry breaking in the centrosymmetric superconductor Sc$_5$Co$_4$Si$_{10}$ probed by muon-spin spectroscopy

We investigate the superconducting properties of Sc$_{5}$Co$_{4}$Si$_{10}$ using low-temperature resistivity, magnetization, heat capacity, and muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. We find that Sc$_{5}$Co$_{4}$Si$_{10}$ {exhibits type-II} superconductivity with a superconducting transition temperature $T_\mathrm{C}= 3.5 (1)$\,K. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density obtained from transverse-field $μ$SR spectra is best modeled using an isotropic Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer type $s$-wave gap symmetry with $2Δ/k_\mathrm{B}T_\mathrm{C} = 2.84(2)$. However, the zero-field muon-spin relaxation asymmetry reveals the appearance of a spontaneous magnetic field below $T_\mathrm{C}$, indicating that time-reversal symmetry (TRS) is broken in the superconducting state. Although this behavior is commonly associated with non-unitary or mixed singlet-triplet pairing, our group-theoretical analysis of the Ginzburg-Landau free energy alongside density functional theory calculations indicates that unconventional mechanisms are pretty unlikely. Therefore, we have hypothesized that TRS breaking may occur via a conventional electron-phonon process.

Evidence of nodal superconductivity in LaFeSiH

Unconventional superconductivity has recently been discovered in the first iron-based superconducting silicide LaFeSiH. By using the complementary techniques of muon spin rotation, tunneling diode oscillator and density functional theory, we investigate the magnetic penetration depth and thereby the superconducting gap of this novel high-temperature superconductor. We find that the magnetic penetration depth displays a sub-$T^2$ behavior in the low-temperature regime below $T_c/3$, which evidences a nodal structure of the gap (or a gap with very deep minima). Even if the topology of the computed Fermi surface is compatible with the $s_\pm$-wave case with accidental nodes, its nesting and orbital-content features may eventually result in a $d$-wave state, more unusual for high-temperature superconductors of this class.

GeantV: Results from the prototype of concurrent vector particle transport simulation in HEP

Full detector simulation was among the largest CPU consumer in all CERN experiment software stacks for the first two runs of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In the early 2010's, the projections were that simulation demands would scale linearly with luminosity increase, compensated only partially by an increase of computing resources. The extension of fast simulation approaches to more use cases, covering a larger fraction of the simulation budget, is only part of the solution due to intrinsic precision limitations. The remainder corresponds to speeding-up the simulation software by several factors, which is out of reach using simple optimizations on the current code base. In this context, the GeantV R&D project was launched, aiming to redesign the legacy particle transport codes in order to make them benefit from fine-grained parallelism features such as vectorization, but also from increased code and data locality. This paper presents extensively the results and achievements of this R&D, as well as the conclusions and lessons learnt from the beta prototype.

Multigap superconductivity in the new BiCh$_{2}$-based layered superconductor La$_\mathrm{0.7}$Ce$_\mathrm{0.3}$OBiSSe

The layered bismuth oxy-sulfide materials, which are structurally related to the Fe-pnictides/chalcogenides and cuprates superconductors, have brought substantial attention for understanding the physics of reduced dimensional superconductors. We have examined the pairing symmetry of recently discovered BiCh$_2$-based superconductor, La$_\mathrm{1-x}$Ce$_\mathrm{x}$OBiSSe with $x$ = 0.3, through transverse field (TF) muon spin rotation measurement, in addition we present the results of magnetization, resistivity and zero field (ZF) muon spin relaxation measurements. Bulk superconductivity has been observed below 2.7 K for $x$ = 0.3, verified by resistivity and magnetization data. The temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth has been determined from TF-$μ$SR data can be described by an isotropic two-gap $s+s$ wave model compared to a single gap $s$- or anisotropic $s$-wave models, the resemblance with Fe-pnictides/chalcogenides and MgB$_2$. Furthermore, from the TF-$μ$SR data, we have determined the London's penetration depth $λ_\mathrm{L}(0)$ = 452(3) nm, superconducting carrier's density $n_\mathrm{s}$ = 2.18(1) $\times$10$^{26}$ carriers/m$^{3}$ and effective mass enhancement $m^{*}$ = 1.66(1) $m_\mathrm{e}$, respectively. No signature of spontaneous internal field is found down to 100 mK in ZF-$μ$SR measurement suggest that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in this system.

Quantum Fluctuations in the Non-Fermi Liquid System CeCo$_{2}$Ga$_{8}$ Investigated Using $μ$SR

Reduced dimensionality offers a crucial information in deciding the type of the quantum ground state in heavy fermion materials. Here we have examined stoichiometric CeCo$_{2}$Ga$_{8}$ compound, which crystallizes in a quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure with Ga-Ce-Co chains along the $c$-axis. The low-temperature behavior of magnetic susceptibility ($χ\sim-\ln T$), heat capacity ($C_p/T\sim-\ln T$), and resistivity ($ρ\sim T^{n}$) firmly confirm the non-Fermi liquid ground state of CeCo$_{2}$Ga$_{8}$. We studied the low-energy spin dynamics of CeCo$_{2}$Ga$_{8}$ compound utilizing zero field (ZF-) and longitudinal field (LF-) muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. ZF-$μ$SR measurement reveals the absence of long-range magnetic ordering down to 70 mK, and interestingly below 1 K, the electronic relaxation rate sharply rises, intimating the appearance of low energy quantum spin fluctuations in CeCo$_{2}$Ga$_{8}$.

Investigation of Superconducting Gap Structure in HfIrSi using muon spin relaxation/rotation

Appearance of strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is apparent in ternary equiatomic compounds with 5$d$-electrons due to the large atomic radii of transition metals. SOC plays a significant role in the emergence of unconventional superconductivity. Here we examined the superconducting state of HfIrSi using magnetization, specific heat, zero and transverse-field (ZF/TF) muon spin relaxation/rotation ($μ$SR) measurements. Superconductivity is observed at $T_\mathrm{C}$ = 3.6 K as revealed by specific heat and magnetization measurements. From the TF$-μ$SR analysis it is clear that superfluid density well described by an isotropic BCS type $s$-wave gap structure. Furthermore, from TF$-μ$SR data we have also estimated the superconducting carrier density $n_\mathrm{s}$ = 6.6 $\times$10$^{26}$m$^{-3}$, London penetration depth $λ_{L}(0)$ = 259.59 nm and effective mass $m^{*}$ = 1.57 $m_{e}$. Our zero-field muon spin relaxation data indicate no clear sign of spontaneous internal field below $T_\mathrm{C}$, which implies that the time-reversal symmetry is preserved in HfIrSi. Theoretical investigation suggests Hf and Ir atoms hybridize strongly along the $c$-axis of the lattice, which is responsible for the strong three-dimensionality of this system which screens the Coulomb interaction. As a result despite the presence of correlated $d$-electrons in this system, the correlation effect is weakened, promoting electron-phonon coupling to gain importance.

Ir 5$d$-band Derived Superconductivity in LaIr$_3$

We have studied the superconducting properties of LaIr$_3$ with a rhombohedral structure using magnetization, heat capacity, and muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. The zero-field cooled and field cooled susceptibility measurements exhibit a superconducting transition below $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ = 2.5 K. Magnetization measurements indicate bulk type-II superconductivity with upper critical field $μ_0H_{\mathrm{c2}}(0)$ = 3.84 T. Two successive transitions are observed in heat capacity data, one at $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ = 2.5 K and a second at 1.2 K below $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ whose origin remain unclear. The heat capacity jump reveals $ΔC$/$γT_{\mathrm{C}} \sim$ 1.0 which is lower than 1.43 expected for BCS weak coupling limit. Transverse field-$μ$SR measurements reveal a fully gapped $s-$wave superconductivity with 2$Δ(0)/k_{\mathrm{B}}T_{\mathrm{C}}$ = 3.31, which is small compared to BCS value 3.56, suggesting weak coupling superconductivity. Moreover the study of the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth estimated using the transverse field-$μ$SR measurements gives a zero temperature value of the magnetic penetration depth $λ_{\mathrm{L}}(0)$ = 386(3) nm, superconducting carrier density $n_{\mathrm{s}}$ = 2.9(1) $\times$10$^{27}$ carriers $m^{-3}$ and the carriers' effective-mass enhancement $m^{*}$ = 1.53(1) $m_{\mathrm{e}}$. Our zero-field-$μ$SR measurements do not reveal the spontaneous appearance of an internal magnetic field below the transition temperature, which indicates that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting state of LaIr$_3$.

Role of polarized tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy in the enhancement of interface optical phonon modes in AlGaN multi-quantum wells

Group III nitride based two-dimensional multi-quantum well (MQW) nanostructures find remarkable applications in the visible to ultraviolet light sources. The interface optical (IFO) phonon modes in a c-axis oriented superlattice of [Al0.35Ga0.65N (~1.75 nm)/Al0.55Ga0.45N (~2nm)]20 MQWs are observed using tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopic (TERS) studies. The near-field studies using TERS probe with an Au spherical nanoparticle of ~ 200 nm diameter were carried out at ambient conditions showing approximately two to three orders of enhancement in the Raman intensities. The interface phonon mode belonging to E1 symmetry [IFO(E1)] vibrating normal to the c-axis of MQWs appeared to be more prominent in the case of TERS measurement compared to that for the other interface phonon mode of A1 symmetry. The confined electric field of the polarized electro-magnetic excitation using TERS probe, parallel to the plane of the interface of MQW, is made responsible for the plasmonic enhancement of IFO(E1) phonon mode. The confinement was verified using finite-difference time-domain simulation.

Two-band superconductivity with unconventional pairing symmetry in HfV$_2$Ga$_4$

In this letter, we have examined the superconducting ground state of the HfV$_2$Ga$_4$ compound using resistivity, magnetization, zero-field (ZF) and transverse-field (TF) muon-spin relaxation and rotation ($μ$SR) measurements. Resistivity and magnetization unveil the onset of bulk superconductivity with $T_{\bf c}\sim$ 3.9~K, while TF-$μ$SR measurements show that the temperature dependence of the superfluid density is well described by a nodal two-gap $s$+$d$-wave order parameter model. In addition, ZF muon relaxation rate increases with decreasing temperature below 4.6 K, indicating the presence of weak spin fluctuations. These observations suggest an unconventional multiband nature of the superconductivity possibly arising from the distinct $d$-bands of V and Hf ions with spin fluctuations playing an important role. To better understand these findings, we carry out first-principles electronic-structure calculations, further highlighting that the Fermi surface consists of multiple disconnected sheets with very different orbital weights and spin-orbit coupling, bridging the way for a nodal multiband superconductivity scenario. In this vein, therefore, HfV$_2$Ga$_4$-family stands out as an open avenue to novel unexplored unconventional superconducting compounds, such as ScV$_2$Ga$_4$ and ZrV$_2$Ga$_4$, and other many rare earths based materials.

Incommensurate spin-density-wave antiferromagnetism in CeRu$_2$Al$_2$B

The newly discovered Ising-type ferromagnet CeRu$_2$Al$_2$B exhibits an additional phase transition at $T_\textrm{N}$ = 14.2 K before entering the ferromagnetic ground state at $T_\textrm{C}$ = 12.8 K. We clarify the nature of this transition through high resolution neutron diffraction measurements. The data reveal the presence of a longitudinal incommensurate spin-density wave (SDW) in the temperature range of $T_\textrm{C}<T<T_\textrm{N}$. The propagation vector ${\bf q} \sim (0,0,0.148)$ is nearly temperature independent in this region and discontinuously locks into ${\bf q} = 0$ at $T_\textrm{C}$. Mean-field calculations of an effective Ising model indicate that the modulated SDW phase is stabilized by a strong competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. This makes CeRu$_2$Al$_2$B a particularly attractive model system to study the global phase diagram of ferromagnetic heavy-fermion metals under influence of magnetic frustration.

Spin wave excitations in the pyrovanadate alpha-Cu2V2O7

The pyrovanadate alpha-Cu2V2O7 belongs to the orthorhombic (Fdd2) class of crystals with noncentrosymmetric crystal structure. Recently, the compound has been identified to be a magnetic multiferroic with a substantial electric polarization below the magnetic transition temperature TC = 35 K. Here we report the results of our inelastic neutron scattering (INS) studies on a polycrystalline sample of alpha-Cu2V2O7. Our INS data clearly show the existence of dispersive spin wave excitations below TC with a zone-boundary energy of 11 meV at 5 K.We have analyzed the data using linear spin wave theory, which shows good agreement between the experiment and calculation. The analysis is consistent with the third nearest neighbor exchange interaction playing a dominant role in the magnetism of the material.

$μ$SR and Neutron Diffraction Investigations on Reentrant Ferromagnetic Superconductor Eu(Fe{0.86}Ir{0.14})2As2

Results of muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and neutron powder diffraction measurements on a reentrant superconductor Eu(Fe$_{0.86}$Ir$_{0.14}$)$_2$As$_2$ are presented. Eu(Fe$_{0.86}$Ir$_{0.14}$)$_2$As$_2$ exhibits superconductivity at $T_{\rm c\,on} \approx 22.5$~K competing with long range ordered Eu$^{+2}$ moments below $\approx 18$ K. A reentrant behavior (manifested by nonzero resistivity in the temperature range 10--17.5 K) results from an exquisite competition between the superconductivity and magnetic order. The zero field $μ$SR data confirm the long range magnetic ordering below $T_{\rm Eu} = 18.7(2)$ K. The transition temperature is found to increase with increasing magnetic field in longitudinal field $μ$SR which along with the neutron diffraction results, suggests the transition to be ferromagnetic. The neutron diffraction data reveal a clear presence of magnetic Bragg peaks below $T_{\rm Eu}$ which could be indexed with propagation vector k = (0, 0, 0), confirming a long range magnetic ordering in agreement with $μ$SR data. Our analysis of the magnetic structure reveals an ordered magnetic moment of $6.29(5)\,μ_{\rm B}$ (at 1.8 K) on the Eu atoms and they form a ferromagnetic structure with moments aligned along the $c$-axis. No change in the magnetic structure is observed in the reentrant or superconducting phases and the magnetic structure remains same for 1.8 K $\leq T \leq T_{\rm Eu}$. No clear evidence of structural transition or Fe moment ordering was found.

Broken time-reversal symmetry probed by muon spin relaxation in the caged type superconductor Lu$_5$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18}$

The superconducting state of the caged type compound Lu$_5$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18}$ has been investigated by using magnetization, heat capacity, and muon-spin relaxation or rotation ($μ$SR) measurements and the results interpreted on the basis of the group theoretical classifications of the possible pairing symmetries and a simple model of the resulting quasiparticle spectra. Our zero-field $μ$SR measurements clearly reveal the spontaneous appearance of an internal magnetic field below the transition temperature, which indicates that the superconducting state in this material is characterized by the broken time-reversal symmetry. Further the analysis of temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth measured using the transverse field $μ$SR measurements suggest an isotropic $s$-wave character for the superconducting gap. This is in agreement with the heat capacity behavior and we show that it can be interpreted in terms of a non unitary triplet state with point nodes and an open Fermi surface.

Contrasting chemical pressure effect on the moment direction in the Kondo semiconductor CeT$_2$Al$_{10}$ (T = Ru,Os)

The opening of a spin gap in the orthorhombic compounds CeT$_2$Al$_{10}$ (T = Ru and Os) is followed by antiferromagnetic ordering at $T_N$ = 27 K and 28.5 K, respectively, with a small ordered moment (0.29$-$0.34$μ_B$) along the $c-$axis, which is not an easy axis of the crystal field (CEF). In order to investigate how the moment direction and the spin gap energy change with 10\% La doping in Ce$_{1-x}$La$_x$T$_2$Al$_{10}$ (T = Ru and Os) and also to understand the microscopic nature of the magnetic ground state, we here report on magnetic, transport, and thermal properties, neutron diffraction (ND) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) investigations on these compounds. Our INS study reveals the persistence of spin gaps of 7 meV and 10 meV in the 10\% La-doped T = Ru and Os compounds, respectively. More interestingly our ND study shows a very small ordered moment of 0.18 $μ_B$ along the $b-$axis (moment direction changed compared with the undoped compound), in Ce$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$Ru$_2$Al$_{10}$, however a moment of 0.23 $μ_B$ still along the $c-$axis in Ce$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$Os$_2$Al$_{10}$. This contrasting behavior can be explained by a different degree of hybridization in CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ and CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$, being stronger in the latter than in the former. Muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) studies on Ce$_{1-x}$La$_x$Ru$_2$Al$_{10}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7), reveal the presence of coherent frequency oscillations indicating a long$-$range magnetically ordered ground state for $x$ = 0 to 0.5, but an almost temperature independent Kubo$-$Toyabe response between 45 mK and 4 K for $x$ = 0.7. We will compare the results of the present investigations with those reported on the electron and hole$-$doping in CeT$_2$Al$_{10}$.

Exotic Phases in Magnetars

Neutron stars feature extremely high magnetic fields with deduced field strengths of $10^{15}$ G in the case of magnetars and potentially much higher values inside of the star. In this context we consider the appearance of $ρ^-$ meson condensation taking into account the effect of the magnetic field. The results show that, depending on parameters, such a condensation in magnetized neutron stars might (just) occur.

$μ$SR and inelastic neutron scattering investigations of the noncentrosymmetric antiferromagnet CeNiC$_2$

The magnetic state of the noncentrosymmetric antiferromagnet CeNiC$_2$ has been studied by magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. CeNiC$_2$ exhibits three magnetic phase transitions at $T_{N_1}$ = 20 K, $T_{N_2}$ = 10 K and $T_{N_3}$ = 2.5 K. The presence of long range magnetic order below 20 K is confirmed by the observation of oscillations in the $μ$SR spectra between 10 and 20 K and a sharp increase in the muon depolarization rate. INS studies reveal two well-defined crystal electric field (CEF) excitations around 8 and 30 meV. INS data have been analyzed using a CEF model and the wave functions were evaluated. We also calculated the direction and magnitude of the ground state moment using CEF wave functions and compare the results with that proposed from the neutron diffraction. Our CEF model correctly predicts that the moments order along the $b-$axis (or $y$-axis) and the observed magnetic moment is 0.687(5) $μ_B$, which is higher than the moment observed from the neutron diffraction (0.25 $μ_B$/Ce). We attribute the observed reduced moment due to the Kondo screening effect.

Anomalous change of the magnetic moment direction by hole doping in CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$

We present a detailed investigation of the hole (3\% Re) doping effect on the polycrystalline CeRu$_{2}$Al$_{10}$ sample by magnetization, heat capacity, resistivity, muon spin rotation ($μ$SR), and neutron scattering (both elastic and inelastic) measurements. CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ is an exceptional cerium compound with an unusually high Neel temperature of 27 K. Here we study the stability of the unusual magnetic order by means of controlled doping, and we uncover further surprising attributes of this phase transition. The heat capacity, resistivity and $μ$SR measurements reveal an onset of magnetic ordering below 23 K, while a broad peak at 31 K (i.e. above $T_N$), has been observed in the temperature dependent susceptibility, indicating an opening of a spin gap above $T_N$. Our important finding, from the neutron diffraction, is that the compound orders antiferromagnetically with a propagation vector $\bf k$ = (1 0 0) and the ordered state moment is 0.20(1)$μ_B$ along the $b-$axis. This is in sharp contrast to the undoped compound, which shows AFM ordering at 27 K with the ordered moment of 0.39(3)$μ_B$ along the $c-$axis. Similar to CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ our inelastic neutron scattering study on the Re doped shows a sharp spin gap-type excitation near 8 meV at 5 K, but with slightly reduced intensity compared to the undoped compound. Further the excitation broadens and shifts to lower energy ($\le$ 4 meV) near 35 K. These results suggest that the low temperature magnetic properties of the hole doped sample is governed by the competition between the anisotropic hybridization effect and crystal field anisotropy as observed in hole-doped CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$.

Contrasting electron and hole doping effects on the spin gap of the caged type Kondo semimetal CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$: A muon spin relaxation and inelastic neutron scattering investigation

The effects of electron (Ir) and hole (Re) doping on the hybridization gap and antiferromagnetic order have been studied by magnetization, muon spin relaxation ($μ^+$SR), and inelastic neutron scattering on the polycrystalline samples of Ce(Os$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$)$_2$Al$_{10}$ ($x$ = 0.08 and 0.15) and CeOs$_{1.94}$Re$_{0.06}$Al$_{10}$. $μ^+$SR spectra clearly reveals magnetic ordering below 20 and 10 K for $x$ = 0.08 and 0.15 samples respectively with a very weak signature of oscillations of the muon initial asymmetry at very short time scale. Our important findings are that small amount of electron doping (i) completely suppress the inelastic magnetic excitations near 11 meV down to 2K, which were observed in the undoped compound, and the response transforms into a broad quasielastic response and (ii) the internal field at the corresponding muon site is remarkably enhanced by about ten times compared with the parent compound. On the other hand with small amount of hole (3\% Re) doping the intensity of the inelastic magnetic excitations near 11 meV is reduced significantly. The main origin of the observed doping effect is an extra 5$d$ electrons being carried by Ir and a hole carried by Re compared with that the Os atom. The obtained results demonstrate a great sensitivity of the carrier doping and provides additional ways to study their anomalous magnetic properties.

Investigations of the singlet ground state system: PrIrSi3

We report our comprehensive study of physical properties of a ternary intermetallic compound PrIrSi3 investigated by dc magnetic susceptibility chi(T), isothermal magnetization M(H), thermo-remnant magnetization M(t), ac magnetic susceptibility chi_ac(T), specific heat C_p(T), electrical resistivity rho(T), muon spin relaxation (muSR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. A magnetic phase transition is marked by a sharp anomaly at T_tr = 12.2 K in chi(T) measured at low applied fields which is also reflected in the C_p(T) data through a weak anomaly at 12 K. An irreversibility between the zero field cooled and field cooled chi(T) data below 12.2 K and a very large relaxation time of M(t) indicates the presence of ferromagnetic correlation. The magnetic part of specific heat shows a broad Schottky-type anomaly near 40~K due to the crystal electric field (CEF) effect. An extremely small value of magnetic entropy below 12 K suggests a CEF-split singlet ground state which is confirmed from our analysis of INS data. The INS spectra show two prominent inelastic excitations at 8.5 meV and 18.5 meV that could be well accounted by a CEF model. The CEF splitting energy between the ground state singlet and the first excited doublet is found to be 92 K. Our muSR data reveal a possible magnetic ordering below 30 K which is much higher than that found from the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility measurements. This could be due to the presence of short range correlations well above the long range magnetic ordering or due to the electronic changes induced by muons. The induced moment magnetism in the singlet ground state system PrIrSi3 with such a large splitting energy of 92 K is quite surprising.

Physical properties of noncentrosymmetric superconductor LaIrSi3: A μSR study

The results of heat capacity C_p(T, H) and electrical resistivity ρ(T,H) measurements down to 0.35 K as well as muon spin relaxation and rotation (\muSR) measurements on a noncentrosymmetric superconductor LaIrSi3 are presented. Powder neutron diffraction confirmed the reported noncentrosymmetric body-centered tetragonal BaNiSn3-type structure (space group I4\,mm) of LaIrSi3. The bulk superconductivity is observed below T_c = 0.72(1) K. The intrinsic ΔC_e/γ_n T_c = 1.09(3) is significantly smaller than the BCS value of 1.43, and this reduction is accounted by the α-model of BCS superconductivity. The analysis of the superconducting state C_e(T) data by the single-band α-model indicates a moderately anisotropic order parameter with the s-wave gap Δ(0)/k_B T_c = 1.54(2) which is lower than the BCS value of 1.764. Our estimates of various normal and superconducting state parameters indicate a weakly coupled electron-phonon driven type-I s-wave superconductivity in LaIrSi3. The \muSR results also confirm the conventional type-I superconductivity in LaIrSi3 with a preserved time reversal symmetry and hence a singlet pairing superconducting ground state.

Two dimensional magnetic correlation in the unconventional corrugated layered oxides (Ba,Sr)$_4$Mn$_3$O$_{10}$

Both Ba$_4$Mn$_3$O$_{10}$ and Sr$_4$Mn$_3$O$_{10}$ crystallize in an orthorhombic crystal structure consisting of corrugated layers containing Mn$_3$O$_{12}$ polydedra. The thermal variation of magnetic susceptibility of the compositions consists of a broad hump like feature indicating the presence of low dimensional magnetic correlation. We have systematically investigated the magnetic data of these compounds and found that the experimental results match quite well with the two dimensional Heisenberg model of spin-spin interaction. The two dimensional nature of the magnetic spin-spin interaction is supported by the low temperature heat capacity data of Ba$_4$Mn$_3$O$_{10}$. Interestingly, both the samples show dielectric anomaly near the magnetic ordering temperature indicating multiferroic behavior.

Magnetic ordering with reduced cerium moments in hole-doped CeOs2Al10

The lightly hole-doped system CeOs1.94Re0.06Al10 has been studied by muon spin relaxation and neutron diffraction measurements. A long-range antiferromagnetic ordering of the Ce-sublattice with substantially reduced value of the magnetic moment 0.18(1) μ_B has been found below T_N = 21 K. Similar to the undoped parent compound, the magnetic ground state of CeOs1.94Re0.06Al10 preserves the anomalous direction of the ordered moments along the c-axis. The obtained result reveals the crucial difference between electron- and hole-doping effects on the magnetic ordering in CeOs2Al10. The former suppresses the anisotropic c-f hybridization and promotes localized Ce moments. On the contrary, the latter increases the hybridization and shifts the system towards delocalized non-magnetic state.

muSR and inelastic neutron scattering investigations of the caged type Kondo semimetals: CeT2Al10 (T=Fe, Ru and Os)

Recently the Ce-based caged-type compounds having general formula CeT2Al10 (T=Fe, Ru and Os) have generated considerable interest due to the Kondo semiconducting paramagnetic ground state (down to 40 mK) observed in CeFe2Al10 and anomalously high magnetic ordering temperature with a spin gap formation at low temperatures in Kondo semimetals CeRu2Al10 and CeOs2Al10. The formation of long-range magnetic ordering out of the Kondo semiconducting/semimetallic state itself is extraordinary and these are the first examples of this enigmatic coexistence of electronic ground states. These compounds also exhibit strong anisotropy in the magnetic and transport properties, which has been explained on the basis of single ion crystal electric field (CEF) anisotropy in the presence of strongly anisotropic hybridization between localised 4f-electron and conduction electrons. Further they also exhibit a remarkable modification of magnetic and transport properties with doping on Ce, or T or Al sites. In this review we briefly discuss the bulk properties of these compounds, giving a detailed discussion on our muon-spin-relaxation (muSR) investigations and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) results.

Investigation of weak itinerant ferromagnetism and critical behavior of Y$_2$Ni$_7$

The weak itinerant ferromagnetic behavior of Y$_2$Ni$_7$ is investigated through magnetic, transport and calorimetric measurements. The low value of saturation moment, large Rhodes-Wohlfarth ratio, large value of the linear term in heat capacity and Fermi liquid like resistivity behavior with enhanced electron-electron scattering contribution establish firmly the weak itinerant ferromagetic nature of the sample. The critical exponents associated with the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition are also investigated from magnetization isotherms using modified Arrott plot, Kouvel-Fisher plot and critical isotherm technique. The more accurate Kouvel-Fisher plot provides the critical exponents to be $β$ = 0.306, $γ$ = 1.401 and $δ$ = 5.578. These values are markedly different from the mean field values and correspond closely to the two dimensional Ising spin system with long range spin spin interaction.

Spin-glass-like state in GdCu: role of phase separation and magnetic frustration

We report investigations on the ground state magnetic properties of intermetallic compound GdCu through dc magnetization measurements. GdCu undergoes first order martensitic type structural transition over a wide temperature window of coexisting phases. The high temperature cubic and the low temperature orthorhombic phases have different magnetic character and they show antiferromagnetic and helimagnetic orderings below 145 K and 45 K respectively. We observe clear signature of a glassy magnetic phase below the helimagnetic ordering temperature, which is marked by thermomagnetic irreversibility, aging and memory effects. The glassy magnetic phase in GdCu is found to be rather intriguing with its origin lies in the interfacial frustration due to distinct magnetic character of the coexisting phases.

Measurement of the Cosmic-Ray Antiproton to Proton Abundance Ratio between 4 and 50 GeV

We present a new measurement of the antiproton to proton abundance ratio, pbar/p, in the cosmic radiation. The HEAT-pbar instrument, a balloon borne magnet spectrometer with precise rigidity and multiple energy loss measurement capability, was flown successfully in Spring 2000, at an average atmospheric depth of 7.2 g/cm^2. A total of 71 antiprotons were identified above the vertical geomagnetic cut-off rigidity of 4.2 GV. The highest measured proton energy was 81 GeV. We find that the pbar/p abundance ratio agrees with that expected from a purely secondary origin of antiprotons produced by primary protons with a standard soft energy spectrum.
