We prove K-stability of smooth Fano 3-folds of Picard rank 3 and degree 22 that satisfy very explicit generality condition.
We classify finite subgroups $G\subset\mathrm{PGL}_4(\mathbb{C})$ such that $\mathbb{P}^3$ is not $G$-birational to conic bundles and del Pezzo fibrations, and explicitly describe all $G$-Mori fibre spaces that are $G$-birational to $\mathbb{P}^3$ for these subgroups.
We find all K-stable smooth Fano threefolds in the family No. 2.22.
We study the problem of existence of Kähler--Einstein metrics on smooth Fano threefolds of Picard rank one and anticanonical degree $22$ that admit a faithful action of the multiplicative group $\mathbb{C}^\ast$. We prove that, except possibly two explicitly described cases, all such smooth Fano threefolds are Kähler--Einstein.
We study equivariant birational geometry of (rational) quartic double solids ramified over (singular) Kummer surfaces.
We study the complexity of birational self-maps of a projective threefold $X$ by looking at the birational type of surfaces contracted. These surfaces are birational to the product of the projective line with a smooth projective curve. We prove that the genus of the curves occuring is unbounded if and only if $X$ is birational to a conic bundle or a fibration into cubic surfaces. Similarly, we prove that the gonality of the curves is unbounded if and only if $X$ is birational to a conic bundle.
We answer a question of Ciro Ciliberto about cylinders in rational surfaces which are obtained by blowing up the plane at points in general position.
We construct two small resolutions of singularities of the Coble fourfold (the double cover of the four-dimensional projective space branched over the Igusa quartic). We use them to show that all $S_6$-invariant three-dimensional quartics are birational to conic bundles over the quintic del Pezzo surface with the discriminant curves from the Wiman-Edge pencil. As an application, we check that $S_6$-invariant three-dimensional quartics are unirational, obtain new proofs of rationality of four special quartics among them and irrationality of the others, and describe their Weil divisor class groups as $S_6$-representations.
We estimate $δ$-invariants of some singular del Pezzo surfaces with quotient singularities, which we studied ten years ago. As a result, we show that each of these surfaces admits an orbifold Kähler--Einstein metric.
We prove that a quasi-smooth Fano threefold hypersurface is birationally rigid if and only if it has Fano index one.
We study nodal del Pezzo 3-folds of degree $1$ (also known as double Veronese cones) with $28$ singularities, which is the maximal possible number of singularities for such varieties. We show that they are in one-to-one correspondence with smooth plane quartics and use this correspondence to study their automorphism groups. As an application, we find all $G$-birationally rigid varieties of this kind, and construct an infinite number of non-conjugate embeddings of the group $\mathfrak{S}_4$ into the space Cremona group.
We study the rationality problem for nodal quartic double solids. In particular, we prove that nodal quartic double solids with at most six singular points are irrational, and nodal quartic double solids with at least eleven singular points are rational.
We study two rational Fano threefolds with an action of the icosahedral group $\mathfrak{A}_5$. The first one is the famous Burkhardt quartic threefold, and the second one is the double cover of the projective space branched in the Barth sextic surface. We prove that both of them are $\mathfrak{A}_5$-Fano varieties that are $\mathfrak{A}_5$-birationally superrigid. This gives two new embeddings of the group $\mathfrak{A}_5$ into the space Cremona group.
We study Tian's $α$-invariant in comparison with the $α_1$-invariant for pairs $(S_d,H)$ consisting of a smooth surface $S_d$ of degree $d$ in the projective three-dimensional space and a hyperplane section $H$. A conjecture of Tian asserts that $α(S_d,H)=α_1(S_d,H)$. We show that this is indeed true for $d=4$ (the result is well known for $d\leqslant 3$), and we show that $α(S_d,H)<α_1(S_d,H)$ for $d\geqslant 8$ provided that $S_d$ is general enough. We also construct examples of $S_d$, for $d=6$ and $d=7$, for which Tian's conjecture fails. We provide a candidate counterexample for $S_5$.
We give an explicit counter-example to a conjecture of Kyusik Hong and Joonyeong Won about $α$-invariants of polarized smooth del Pezzo surfaces of degree one.
We prove that the quartic threefolds defined by $$ \sum_{i=0}^{5}x_i=\sum_{i=0}^{5}x_i^4-t\left(\sum_{i=0}^{5}x_i^2\right)^2=0 $$ in $\mathbb{P}^5$ are rational for $t=\frac{1}{6}$ and $t=\frac{7}{10}$.
We prove that $\frac{2}{d}$, $\frac{2d-3}{(d-1)^2}$, $\frac{2d-1}{d(d-1)}$, $\frac{2d-5}{d^2-3d+1}$ and $\frac{2d-3}{d(d-2)}$ are the smallest log canonical thresholds of reduced plane curves of degree $d\geqslant 3$, and we describe reduced plane curves of degree $d$ whose log canonical thresholds are these numbers. As an application, we prove that $\frac{2}{d}$, $\frac{2d-3}{(d-1)^2}$, $\frac{2d-1}{d(d-1)}$, $\frac{2d-5}{d^2-3d+1}$ and $\frac{2d-3}{d(d-2)}$ are the smallest values of the $α$-invariant of Tian of smooth surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ of degree $d\geqslant 3$. We also prove that every reduced plane curve of degree $d\geqslant 4$ whose log canonical threshold is smaller than $\frac{5}{2d}$ is GIT-unstable for the action of the group $\mathrm{PGL}_3(\mathbb{C})$, and we describe GIT-semistable reduced plane curves with log canonical thresholds $\frac{5}{2d}$.
We show that affine cones over smooth cubic surfaces do not admit non-trivial $\mathbb{G}_a$ -actions.
We study log canonical thresholds on quartic threefolds, quintic fourfolds, and double spaces. As an application, we show that they have a Kaehler-Einstein metric if they are general.
In this paper we connect degenerations of Fano threefolds by projections. Using Mirror Symmetry we transfer these connections to the side of Landau--Ginzburg models. Based on that we suggest a generalization of Kawamata's categorical approach to birational geometry enhancing it via geometry of moduli spaces of Landau--Ginzburg models. We suggest a conjectural application to Hasset--Kuznetsov--Tschinkel program based on new nonrationality "invariants" we consider --- gaps and phantom categories. We make several conjectures for these invariants in the case of surfaces of general type and quadric bundles.
For every smooth del Pezzo surface $S$, smooth curve $C\in|-K_{S}|$ and $β\in(0,1]$, we compute the $α$-invariant of Tian $α(S,(1-β)C)$ and prove the existence of Kähler--Einstein metrics on $S$ with edge singularities along $C$ of angle $2πβ$ for $β$ in certain interval. In particular we give lower bounds for the invariant $R(S,C)$, introduced by Donaldson as the supremum of all $β\in(0,1]$ for which such a metric exists.
I prove new local inequality for divisors on smooth surfaces, describe its applications, and compare it to a similar local inequality that is already known by experts.
We prove new local inequality for divisors on surfaces and utilize it to compute $α$-invariants of singular del Pezzo surfaces, which implies that del Pezzo surfaces of degree one whose singular points are of type $\mathbb{A}_{1}$, $\mathbb{A}_{2}$, $\mathbb{A}_{3}$, $\mathbb{A}_{4}$, $\mathbb{A}_{5}$ or $\mathbb{A}_{6}$ are Kähler-Einstein.
We prove that nine-dimensional exceptional quotient singularities exist.
We show that the only sporadic simple group such that some of its faithful representations or some faithful representations of its stem extensions give rise to exceptional (weakly-exceptional but not exceptional, respectively) quotient singularities is the Hall-Janko group (the Suzuki group, respectively).
We show that infinitely many Gorenstein weakly-exceptional quotient singularities exist in all dimensions, we prove a weak-exceptionality criterion for five-dimensional quotient singularities, and we find a sufficient condition for being weakly-exceptional for six-dimensional quotient singularities. The proof is naturally linked to various classical geometrical constructions related to subvarieties of small degree in projective spaces, in particular Bordiga surfaces and Bordiga threefolds.
We classify smooth del Pezzo surfaces whose alpha-invariant of Tian is bigger than one.
We study del Pezzo surfaces that are quasismooth and well-formed weighted hypersurfaces. In particular, we find all such surfaces whose alpha-invariant of Tian is greater than 2/3.
We propose a new method to study birational maps between Fano varieties based on multiplier ideal sheaves. Using this method, we prove equivariant birational rigidity of four Fano threefolds acted on by the group A6. As an application, we obtain that the Cremona group of rank 3 has at least five non-conjugate subgroups isomorphic to A6.
We study exceptional quotient singularities. In particular, we prove an exceptionality criterion in terms of the $α$-invariant of Tian, and utilize it to classify four-dimensional and five-dimensional exceptional quotient singularities.
We classify six-dimensional exceptional quotient singularities and show that seven-dimensional exceptional quotient singularities do not exist. Inter alia we prove that the irreducible six-dimensional projective representation of the sporadic simple Hall--Janko group gives rise to an exceptional quotient singularity.
We study the action of the Klein simple group G consisting of 168 elements on two rational threefolds: the three-dimensional projective space and a smooth Fano threefold X of anticanonical degree 22 and index 1. We show that the Cremona group of rank three has at least three non-conjugate subgroups isomorphic to G. As a by-product, we prove that X admits a Kahler-Einstein metric, and we construct a smooth polarized K3 surface of degree 22 with an action of the group G.
