Large deviation principles and functional limit theorems in the deep limit of wide random neural networks

This paper studies large deviation principles and weak convergence, both at the level of finite-dimensional distributions and in functional form, for a class of continuous, isotropic, centered Gaussian random fields defined on the unit sphere. The covariance functions of these fields evolve recursively through a nonlinear map induced by an activation function, reflecting the statistical dynamics of infinitely wide random neural networks as depth increases. We consider two types of centered fields, obtained by subtracting either the value at the North Pole or the spherical average. According to the behavior of the derivative at $t=1$ of the associated covariance function, we identify three regimes: low disorder, sparse, and high disorder. In the low-disorder regime, we establish functional large deviation principles and weak convergence results. In the sparse regime, we obtain large deviation principles and weak convergence for finite-dimensional distributions, while both properties fail at the functional level sense due to the emergence of discontinuities in the covariance recursion.

An inverse Sanov theorem for exponential families

We prove the large deviation principle (LDP) for posterior distributions arising from subfamilies of full exponential families, allowing misspecification of the model. Moreover, motivated by the so-called inverse Sanov Theorem (see e.g. Ganesh and O'Connell 1999 and 2000), we prove the LDP for the corresponding maximum likelihood estimator, and we study the relationship between rate functions. In our setting, even in the non misspecified case, it is not true in general that the rate functions for posterior distributions and for maximum likelihood estimators are Kullback-Leibler divergences with exchanged arguments.

Asymptotic results for certain first-passage times and areas of renewal processes

We consider the process $\{x-N(t):t\geq 0\}$, where $x\in\mathbb{R}_+$ and $\{N(t):t\geq 0\}$ is a renewal process with light-tailed distributed holding times. We are interested in the joint distribution of $(τ(x),A(x))$ where $τ(x)$ is the first-passage time of $\{x-N(t):t\geq 0\}$ to reach zero or a negative value, and $A(x):=\int_0^{τ(x)}(x-N(t))dt$ is the corresponding first-passage (positive) area swept out by the process $\{x-N(t):t\geq 0\}$. We remark that we can define the sequence $\{(τ(n),A(n)):n\geq 1\}$ by referring to the concept of integrated random walk. Our aim is to prove asymptotic results as $x\to\infty$ in the fashion of large (and moderate) deviations.

Non-central moderate deviations for compound fractional Poisson processes

The term "moderate deviations" is often used in the literature to mean a class of large deviation principles that, in some sense, fill the gap between a convergence in probability to zero (governed by a large deviation principle) and a weak convergence to a centered Normal distribution. We talk about "non-central moderate deviations" when the weak convergence is towards a non-Gaussian distribution. In this paper we study non-central moderate deviations for compound fractional Poisson processes with light-tailed jumps.

Some examples of non-central moderate deviations for sequences of real random variables

The term \emph{moderate deviations} is often used in the literature to mean a class of large deviation principles that, in some sense, fill the gap between a convergence in probability to zero (governed by a large deviation principle) and a weak convergence to a centered Normal distribution. In this paper we present some examples of classes of large deviation principles of this kind, but the involved random variables converge weakly to Gumbel, exponential and Laplace distributions.

Asymptotic results for the absorption time of telegraph processes with elastic boundary at the origin

We consider a telegraph process with elastic boundary at the origin studied recently in the literature. It is a particular random motion with finite velocity which starts at $x\geq 0$, and its dynamics is determined by upward and downward switching rates $λ$ and $μ$, with $λ>μ$, and an absorption probability (at the origin) $α\in(0,1]$. Our aim is to study the asymptotic behavior of the absorption time at the origin with respect to two different scalings: $x\to\infty$ in the first case; $μ\to\infty$, with $λ=βμ$ for some $β>1$ and $x>0$, in the second case. We prove several large and moderate deviation results. We also present numerical estimates of $β$ based on an asymptotic Normality result for the case of the second scaling.

Asymptotic results for the last zero crossing time of a Brownian motion with non-null drift

We consider the last zero crossing time $T_{μ,t}$ of a Brownian motion, with drift $μ\neq 0$ in the time interval $[0, t]$. We prove the large deviation principle of $\{T_{μ\sqrt r t} : r > 0 \}$ as $r$ tends to infinity. Moreover, motivated by the results on moderate deviations in the literature, we also prove a class of large deviation principles for the same random variables with different scalings, which are governed by the same rate function. Finally we compare some aspects of the classical moderate deviation results, and the results in this paper.

Random time-change with inverses of multivariate subordinators: governing equations and fractional dynamics

It is well-known that compositions of Markov processes with inverse subordinators are governed by integro-differential equations of generalized fractional type. This kind of processes are of wide interest in statistical physics as they are connected to anomalous diffusions. In this paper we consider a generalization; more precisely we mean componentwise compositions of $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued Markov processes with the components of an independent multivariate inverse subordinator. As a possible application, we present a model of anomalous diffusion in anisotropic medium, which is obtained as a weak limit of suitable continuous-time random walks.

Asymptotic results for a multivariate version of the alternative fractional Poisson process

A multivariate fractional Poisson process was recently defined in Beghin and Macci (2016) by considering a common independent random time change for a finite dimensional vector of independent (non-fractional) Poisson processes; moreover it was proved that, for each fixed $t\geq 0$, it has a suitable multinomial conditional distribution of the components given their sum. In this paper we consider another multivariate process $\{\underline{M}^ν(t)=(M_1^ν(t),\ldots,M_m^ν(t)):t\geq 0\}$ with the same conditional distributions of the components given their sums, and different marginal distributions of the sums; more precisely we assume that the one-dimensional marginal distributions of the process $\left\{\sum_{i=1}^mM_i^ν(t):t\geq0\right\}$ coincide with the ones of the alternative fractional (univariate) Poisson process in Beghin and Macci (2013). We present large deviation results for $\{\underline{M}^ν(t)=(M_1^ν(t),\ldots,M_m^ν(t)):t\geq 0\}$, and this generalizes the result in Beghin and Macci (2013) concerning the univariate case. We also study moderate deviations and we present some statistical applications concerning the estimation of the fractional parameter $ν$.

Multivariate fractional Poisson processes and compound sums

In this paper we present multivariate space-time fractional Poisson processes by considering common random time-changes of a (finite-dimensional) vector of independent classical (non-fractional) Poisson processes. In some cases we also consider compound processes. We obtain some equations in terms of some suitable fractional derivatives and fractional difference operators, which provides the extension of known equations for the univariate processes.

Correlated fractional counting processes on a finite time interval

We present some correlated fractional counting processes on a finite time interval. This will be done by considering a slight generalization of the processes in Borges et al. (2012). The main case concerns a class of space-time fractional Poisson processes and, when the correlation parameter is equal to zero, the univariate distributions coincide with the ones of the space-time fractional Poisson process in Orsingher and Polito (2012). On the other hand, when we consider the time fractional Poisson process, the multivariate finite dimensional distributions are different from the ones presented for the renewal process in Politi et al. (2011). Another case concerns a class of fractional negative binomial processes.

Fractional discrete processes: compound and mixed Poisson representations

We consider two fractional versions of a family of nonnegative integer valued processes. We prove that their probability mass functions solve fractional Kolmogorov forward equations, and we show the overdispersion of these processes. As particular examples in this family, we can define fractional versions of some processes in the literature as the Polya-Aeppli, the Poisson Inverse Gaussian and the Negative Binomial. We also define and study some more general fractional versions with two fractional parameters.

Large deviations for fractional Poisson processes

We prove large deviation principles for two versions of fractional Poisson processes. Firstly we consider the main version which is a renewal process; we also present large deviation estimates for the ruin probabilities of an insurance model with constant premium rate, i.i.d. light tail claim sizes, and a fractional Poisson claim number process. We conclude with the alternative version where all the random variables are weighted Poisson distributed. Keywords: Mittag Leffler function; renewal process; random time cha
