Homological Scaffold via Minimal Homology Bases

The homological scaffold leverages persistent homology to construct a topologically sound summary of a weighted network. However, its crucial dependency on the choice of representative cycles hinders the ability to trace back global features onto individual network components, unless one provides a principled way to make such a choice. In this paper, we apply recent advances in the computation of minimal homology bases to introduce a quasi-canonical version of the scaffold, called minimal, and employ it to analyze data both real and in silico. At the same time, we verify that, statistically, the standard scaffold is a good proxy of the minimal one for sufficiently complex networks.

Alternative probabilistic representations of Barenblatt-type solutions

A general class of probability density functions \[u(x,t)=Ct^{-αd}\left (1-\left (\frac{\|x\|}{ct^α}\right )^β\right )_+^γ,\quad x\in \mathbb{R}^d,t>0,\] is considered, containing as particular case the Barenblatt solutions arising, for instance, in the study of nonlinear heat equations. Alternative probabilistic representations of the Barenblatt-type solutions $u(x,t)$ are proposed. In the one-dimensional case, by means of this approach, $u(x,t)$ can be connected with the wave propagation.

Landscapes of data sets and functoriality of persistent homology

The aim of this article is to describe a new perspective on functoriality of persistent homology and explain its intrinsic symmetry that is often overlooked. A data set for us is a finite collection of functions, called measurements, with a finite domain. Such a data set might contain internal symmetries which are effectively captured by the action of a set of the domain endomorphisms. Different choices of the set of endomorphisms encode different symmetries of the data set. We describe various category structures on such enriched data sets and prove some of their properties such as decompositions and morphism formations. We also describe a data structure, based on coloured directed graphs, which is convenient to encode the mentioned enrichment. We show that persistent homology preserves only some aspects of these landscapes of enriched data sets however not all. In other words persistent homology is not a functor on the entire category of enriched data sets. Nevertheless we show that persistent homology is functorial locally. We use the concept of equivariant operators to capture some of the information missed by persistent homology.

On the notion of weak isometry for finite metric spaces

Finite metric spaces are the object of study in many data analysis problems. We examine the concept of weak isometry between finite metric spaces, in order to analyse properties of the spaces that are invariant under strictly increasing rescaling of the distance functions. In this paper, we analyse some of the possible complete and incomplete invariants for weak isometry and we introduce a dissimilarity measure that asses how far two spaces are from being weakly isometric. Furthermore, we compare these ideas with the theory of persistent homology, to study how the two are related.

Random flights connecting Porous Medium and Euler-Poisson-Darboux equations

In this paper we consider the Porous Medium Equation and establish a relationship between its Kompanets-Zel'dovich-Barenblatt solution $u(\xd,t), \xd\in \mathbb R^d,t>0$ and random flights. The time-rescaled version of $u(\xd,t)$ is the fundamental solution of the Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation which governs the distribution of random flights performed by a particle whose displacements have a Dirichlet probability distribution and choosing directions uniformly on a $d$-dimensional sphere (see, e.g., \cite{dgo}). We consider the space-fractional version of the Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation and present the solution of the related Cauchy problem in terms of the probability distributions of random flights governed by the classical Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation. Furthermore, this research is also aimed at studying the relationship between the solutions of a fractional Porous Medium Equation and the fractional Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation. A considerable part of the paper is devoted to the analysis of the probabilistic tools of the solutions of the fractional equations. Also the extension to higher-order Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation is considered and the solutions interpreted as compositions of laws of pseudoprocesses.

Reflecting random flights

We consider random flights in $\mathbb{R}^d$ reflecting on the surface of a sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}_R,$ with center at the origin and with radius $R,$ where reflection is performed by means of circular inversion. Random flights studied in this paper are motions where the orientation of the deviations are uniformly distributed on the unit-radius sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}_1$. We obtain the explicit probability distributions of the position of the moving particle when the number of changes of direction is fixed and equal to $n\geq 1$. We show that these distributions involve functions which are solutions of the Euler-Darboux-Poisson equation. The unconditional probability distributions of the reflecting random flights are obtained by suitably randomizing $n$ by means of a fractional-type Poisson process. Random flights reflecting on hyperplanes according to the optical reflection form are considered and the related distributional properties derived.

A family of random walks with generalized Dirichlet steps

We analyze a class of continuous time random walks in $\mathbb R^d,d\geq 2,$ with uniformly distributed directions. The steps performed by these processes are distributed according to a generalized Dirichlet law. Given the number of changes of orientation, we provide the analytic form of the probability density function of the position $\{\underline{\bf X}_d(t),t>0\}$ reached, at time $t>0$, by the random motion. In particular, we analyze the case of random walks with two steps. In general, it is an hard task to obtain the explicit probability distributions for the process $\{\underline{\bf X}_d(t),t>0\}$ . Nevertheless, for suitable values for the basic parameters of the generalized Dirichlet probability distribution, we are able to derive the explicit conditional density functions of $\{\underline{\bf X}_d(t),t>0\}$. Furthermore, in some cases, by exploiting the fractional Poisson process, the unconditional probability distributions are obtained. This paper extends in a more general setting, the random walks with Dirichlet displacements introduced in some previous papers.

Reflecting diffusions and hyperbolic Brownian motions in multidimensional spheres

Diffusion processes $(\underline{\bf X}_d(t))_{t\geq 0}$ moving inside spheres $S_R^d \subset\mathbb{R}^d$ and reflecting orthogonally on their surfaces $\partial S_R^d$ are considered. The stochastic differential equations governing the reflecting diffusions are presented and their kernels and distributions explicitly derived. Reflection is obtained by means of the inversion with respect to the sphere $S_R^d$. The particular cases of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process and Brownian motion are examined in detail. The hyperbolic Brownian motion on the Poincarè half-space $\mathbb{H}_d$ is examined in the last part of the paper and its reflecting counterpart within hyperbolic spheres is studied. Finally a section is devoted to reflecting hyperbolic Brownian motion in the Poincarè disc $D$ within spheres concentric with $D$.

Flying randomly in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with Dirichlet displacements

Random flights in $\mathbb{R}^d,d\geq 2,$ with Dirichlet-distributed displacements and uniformly distributed orientation are analyzed. The explicit characteristic functions of the position $\underline{\bf X}_d(t),\,t>0,$ when the number of changes of direction is fixed are obtained. The probability distributions are derived by inverting the characteristic functions for all dimensions $d$ of $\mathbb{R}^d$ and many properties of the probabilistic structure of $\underline{\bf X}_d(t),t>0,$ are examined. If the number of changes of direction is randomized by means of a fractional Poisson process, we are able to obtain explicit distributions for $P\{\underline{\bf X}_d(t)\in d\underline{\bf x}_d\}$ for all $d\geq 2$. A Section is devoted to random flights in $\mathbb{R}^3$ where the general results are discussed. The existing literature is compared with the results of this paper where in our view the classical Pearson's problem of random flights is resolved by suitably randomizing the step lengths. The random flights where changes of direction are governed by a homogeneous Poisson process are analyzed and compared with the model of Dirichlet-distributed displacements of this work.

On a family of test statistics for discretely observed diffusion processes

We consider parametric hypotheses testing for multidimensional ergodic diffusion processes observed at discrete time. We propose a family of test statistics, related to the so called $ϕ$-divergence measures. By taking into account the quasi-likelihood approach developed for studying the stochastic differential equations, it is proved that the tests in this family are all asymptotically distribution free. In other words, our test statistics weakly converge to the chi squared distribution. Furthermore, our test statistic is compared with the quasi likelihood ratio test. In the case of contiguous alternatives, it is also possible to study in detail the power function of the tests. Although all the tests in this family are asymptotically equivalent, we show by Monte Carlo analysis that, in the small sample case, the performance of the test strictly depends on the choice of the function $ϕ$. Furthermore, in this framework, the simulations show that there are not uniformly most powerful tests.

On random flights with non-uniformly distributed directions

This paper deals with a new class of random flights $\underline{\bf X}_d(t),t>0,$ defined in the real space $\mathbb{R}^d, d\geq 2,$ characterized by non-uniform probability distributions on the multidimensional sphere. These random motions differ from similar models appeared in literature which take directions according to the uniform law. The family of angular probability distributions introduced in this paper depends on a parameter $ν\geq 0$ which gives the level of drift of the motion. Furthermore, we assume that the number of changes of direction performed by the random flight is fixed. The time lengths between two consecutive changes of orientation have joint probability distribution given by a Dirichlet density function. The analysis of $\underline{\bf X}_d(t),t>0,$ is not an easy task, because it involves the calculation of integrals which are not always solvable. Therefore, we analyze the random flight $\underline{\bf X}_m^d(t),t>0,$ obtained as projection onto the lower spaces $\mathbb{R}^m,m<d,$ of the original random motion in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Then we get the probability distribution of $\underline{\bf X}_m^d(t),t>0.$ Although, in its general framework, the analysis of $\underline{\bf X}_d(t),t>0,$ is very complicated, for some values of $ν$, we can provide some results on the process. Indeed, for $ν=1$, we obtain the characteristic function of the random flight moving in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Furthermore, by inverting the characteristic function, we are able to give the analytic form (up to some constants) of the probability distribution of $\underline{\bf X}_d(t),t>0.$
