Continuous-time multi-type Ehrenfest model and related Ornstein-Uhlenbeck diffusion on a star graph

We deal with a continuous-time Ehrenfest model defined over an extended star graph, defined as a lattice formed by the integers of $d$ semiaxis joined at the origin. The dynamics on each ray are regulated by linear transition rates, whereas the switching among rays at the origin occurs according to a general stochastic matrix. We perform a detailed investigation of the transient and asymptotic behavior of this process. We also obtain a diffusive approximation of the considered model, which leads to an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck diffusion process over a domain formed by semiaxis joined at the origin, named spider. We show that the approximating process possesses a truncated Gaussian stationary density. Finally, the goodness of the approximation is discussed through comparison of stationary distributions, means and variances.

Asymptotic results for the absorption time of telegraph processes with elastic boundary at the origin

We consider a telegraph process with elastic boundary at the origin studied recently in the literature. It is a particular random motion with finite velocity which starts at $x\geq 0$, and its dynamics is determined by upward and downward switching rates $λ$ and $μ$, with $λ>μ$, and an absorption probability (at the origin) $α\in(0,1]$. Our aim is to study the asymptotic behavior of the absorption time at the origin with respect to two different scalings: $x\to\infty$ in the first case; $μ\to\infty$, with $λ=βμ$ for some $β>1$ and $x>0$, in the second case. We prove several large and moderate deviation results. We also present numerical estimates of $β$ based on an asymptotic Normality result for the case of the second scaling.

Some results on the telegraph process confined by two non-standard boundaries

We analyze the one-dimensional telegraph random process confined by two boundaries, 0 and $H>0$. The process experiences hard reflection at the boundaries (with random switching to full absorption). Namely, when the process hits the origin (the threshold $H$) it is either absorbed, with probability $α$, or reflected upwards (downwards), with probability $1-α$, for $0<α<1$. We provide various results on the expected values of the renewal cycles and of the absorption time. The adopted approach is based on the analysis of the first-crossing times of a suitable compound Poisson process through linear boundaries. Our analysis includes also some comparisons between suitable stopping times of the considered telegraph process and of the corresponding diffusion process obtained under the classical Kac's scaling conditions.

A fractional counting process and its connection with the Poisson process

We consider a fractional counting process with jumps of amplitude $1,2,\ldots,k$, with $k\in \mathbb{N}$, whose probabilities satisfy a suitable system of fractional difference-differential equations. We obtain the moment generating function and the probability law of the resulting process in terms of generalized Mittag-Leffler functions. We also discuss two equivalent representations both in terms of a compound fractional Poisson process and of a subordinator governed by a suitable fractional Cauchy problem. The first occurrence time of a jump of fixed amplitude is proved to have the same distribution as the waiting time of the first event of a classical fractional Poisson process, this extending a well-known property of the Poisson process. When $k=2$ we also express the distribution of the first passage time of the fractional counting process in an integral form. Finally, we show that the ratios given by the powers of the fractional Poisson process and of the counting process over their means tend to 1 in probability.

A multispecies birth-death-immigration process and its diffusion approximation

We consider an extended birth-death-immigration process defined on a lattice formed by the integers of $d$ semiaxes joined at the origin. When the process reaches the origin, then it may jumps toward any semiaxis with the same rate. The dynamics on each ray evolves according to a one-dimensional linear birth-death process with immigration. We investigate the transient and asymptotic behavior of the process via its probability generating function. The stationary distribution, when existing, is a zero-modified negative binomial distribution. We also study a diffusive approximation of the process, which involves a diffusion process with linear drift and infinitesimal variance on each ray. It possesses a gamma-type transient density admitting a stationary limit. As a byproduct of our study, we obtain a closed form of the number of permutations with a fixed number of components, and a new series form of the polylogarithm function expressed in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric function.

A review on symmetry properties of birth-death processes

In this paper we review some results on time-homogeneous birth-death processes. Specifically, for truncated birth-death processes with two absorbing or two reflecting endpoints, we recall the necessary and sufficient conditions on the transition rates such that the transition probabilities satisfy a spatial symmetry relation. The latter leads to simple expressions for first-passage-time densities and avoiding transition probabilities. This approach is thus thoroughly extended to the case of bilateral birth-death processes, even in the presence of catastrophes, and to the case of a two-dimensional birth-death process with constant rates.

Compound Poisson process with a Poisson subordinator

A compound Poisson process whose randomized time is an independent Poisson process is called compound Poisson process with Poisson subordinator. We provide its probability distribution, which is expressed in terms of the Bell polynomials, and investigate in detail both the special cases in which the compound Poisson process has exponential jumps and normal jumps. Then for the iterated Poisson process we discuss some properties and provide convergence results to a Poisson process. The first-crossing-time problem for the iterated Poisson process is finally tackled in the cases of (i) a decreasing and constant boundary, where we provide some closed-form results, and (ii) a linearly increasing boundary, where we propose an iterative procedure to compute the first-crossing-time density and survival functions.

A generalized telegraph process with velocity driven by random trials

We consider a random trial-based telegraph process, which describes a motion on the real line with two constant velocities along opposite directions. At each epoch of the underlying counting process the new velocity is determined by the outcome of a random trial. Two schemes are taken into account: Bernoulli trials and classical Pólya urn trials. We investigate the probability law of the process and the mean of the velocity of the moving particle. We finally discuss two cases of interest: (i) the case of Bernoulli trials and intertimes having exponential distributions with linear rates (in which, interestingly, the process exhibits a logistic stationary density with non-zero mean), and (ii) the case of Pólya trials and intertimes having first Gamma and then exponential distributions with constant rates.

On a bilateral birth-death process with alternating rates

We consider a bilateral birth-death process characterized by a constant transition rate $λ$ from even states and a possibly different transition rate $μ$ from odd states. We determine the probability generating functions of the even and odd states, the transition probabilities, mean and variance of the process for arbitrary initial state. Some features of the birth-death process confined to the non-negative integers by a reflecting boundary in the zero-state are also analyzed. In particular, making use of a Laplace transform approach we obtain a series form of the transition probability from state 1 to the zero-state.
