Deformed Butler-Volmer Models for Convex Semilogarithmic Current-Overpotential Profiles of Li-ion Batteries

The Butler-Volmer (BV) equation links the current flux crossing an electrochemical interface to the electric potential drop across it with the assumption of Arrhenius kinetics and the Boltzmann factor. Applying the semilogarithmic Tafel analysis in which the logarithm of current is plotted vs. the overpotential one expects straight lines from which the fundamental reaction rate of the kinetic process can be computed. However, some Li-ion battery data, which is the focus here, show nonlinear convex profiles that cannot be adequately fitted with the standard BV model. We propose instead two deformed BV models for the analysis of such types of behaviors constructed from the superposition of cells exhibiting only local equilibrium and thus giving rise to the power-law $q$-exponential and $κ$-exponential functions. Non-Boltzmann distributions have been successfully employed for the modeling of a wide spectrum of physical systems in nonequilibrium situations, but not yet for batteries. We verify the validity of the deformed BV models on experimental data obtained from \ce{LiFePO4} and \ce{Li}-\ce{O2} batteries.

Time-Domain and Frequency-Domain Mappings of Voltage-to-Charge and Charge-to-Voltage in Capacitive Devices

In this work, we aim to show that there are generally four possible mapping functions that can be used to map the time-domain or frequency-domain representations of an applied voltage input to the resulting time-domain or frequency-domain electrical charge output; i.e. when the capacitive device is voltage-charged. Alternatively, there are four more possible combinations when the device is current-charged. The dual relationship between each pair of functions for the case of voltage or charge input are provided in terms of single or double Fourier transforms. All eight system functions coincide with each other if and only if a constant time- and frequency-independent capacitance is considered.

Tuning the competition between superconductivity and charge order in kagome superconductor Cs(V1-xNbx)3Sb5

The recently discovered coexistence of superconductivity and charge density wave order in the kagome systems AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) has stimulated enormous interest. According to theory, a vanadium-based kagome system may host a flat band, nontrivial linear dispersive Dirac surface states and electronic correlation. Despite intensive investigations, it remains controversial about the origin of the charge density wave (CDW) order, how does the superconductivity relate to the CDW, and whether the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) arises primarily from the kagome lattice or the CDW order. We report an extensive investigation on Cs(V1-xNbx)3Sb5 samples with systematic Nb doping. Our results show that the Nb doping induces apparent suppression of CDW order and promotes superconductivity; meanwhile, the AHE and magnetoresistance (MR) will be significantly weakened together with the CDW order. Combining with our density functional calculations, we interpret these effects by an antiphase shift of the Fermi energy with respect to the saddle points near M and the Fermi surface centered around Γ. It is found that the former depletes the filled states for the CDW instability and worsens the nesting condition for CDW order; while the latter lifts the Fermi level upward and enlarges the Fermi surface surrounding the Γ point, and thus promotes superconductivity. Our results uncover a delicate but unusual competition between the CDW order and superconductivity.

Ultrathin ferrimagnetic GdFeCo films with very low damping

Ferromagnetic materials dominate as the magnetically active element in spintronic devices, but come with drawbacks such as large stray fields, and low operational frequencies. Compensated ferrimagnets provide an alternative as they combine the ultrafast magnetization dynamics of antiferromagnets with a ferromagnet-like spin-orbit-torque (SOT) behavior. However to use ferrimagnets in spintronic devices their advantageous properties must be retained also in ultrathin films (t < 10 nm). In this study, ferrimagnetic Gdx(Fe87.5Co12.5)1-x thin films in the thickness range t = 2-20 nm were grown on high resistance Si(100) substrates and studied using broadband ferromagnetic resonance measurements at room temperature. By tuning their stoichiometry, a nearly compensated behavior is observed in 2 nm Gdx(Fe87.5Co12.5)1-x ultrathin films for the first time, with an effective magnetization of Meff = 0.02 T and a low effective Gilbert damping constant of α = 0.0078, comparable to the lowest values reported so far in 30 nm films. These results show great promise for the development of ultrafast and energy efficient ferrimagnetic spintronic devices.

Unexpected Hydrophobicity on Self-Assembled Monolayers Terminated with Two Hydrophilic Hydroxyl Groups

Current major approaches to access surface hydrophobicity include directly introducing hydrophobic nonpolar groups/molecules into surface or elaborately fabricating surface roughness. Here, for the first time, molecular dynamics simulations show an unexpected hydrophobicity with a contact angle of $82^o$ on a flexible self-assembled monolayer terminated only with two hydrophilic OH groups ($(OH)_2\!-\!SAM$). This hydrophobicity is attributed to the formation of a hexagonal-ice-like H-bonding structure in the OH matrix of $(OH)_2\!-\!SAM$, which sharply reduces the hydrogen bonds between surface and water molecules above. The unique simple interface presented here offers a significant molecular-level platform for examining the bio-interfacial interactions ranging from biomolecules binding to cell adhesion.

Automated Model Selection for Time-Series Anomaly Detection

Time-series anomaly detection is a popular topic in both academia and industrial fields. Many companies need to monitor thousands of temporal signals for their applications and services and require instant feedback and alerts for potential incidents in time. The task is challenging because of the complex characteristics of time-series, which are messy, stochastic, and often without proper labels. This prohibits training supervised models because of lack of labels and a single model hardly fits different time series. In this paper, we propose a solution to address these issues. We present an automated model selection framework to automatically find the most suitable detection model with proper parameters for the incoming data. The model selection layer is extensible as it can be updated without too much effort when a new detector is available to the service. Finally, we incorporate a customized tuning algorithm to flexibly filter anomalies to meet customers' criteria. Experiments on real-world datasets show the effectiveness of our solution.

Hydrogen Polarity of Interfacial Water Regulates Heterogeneous Ice Nucleation

Using all-atomic molecular dynamics(MD) simulations, we show that various substrates could induce interfacial water (IW) to form the same ice-like oxygen lattice but different hydrogen polarity order, and regulate the heterogeneous ice nucleation on the IW. We develop an efficient MD method to probe the shape, structure of ice nuclei and the corresponding supercooling temperatures. We find that the polarization of hydrogens in IW increases the surface tension between the ice nucleus and the IW, thus lifts the free energy barrier of heterogeneous ice nucleation. The results show that not only the oxygen lattice order but the hydrogen disorder of IW on substrates are required to effectively facilitate the freezing of atop water.

Mass transportation of thermally driven nanotube nanomotors with defects

Thermally driven nanotube nanomotors provide linear mass transportation controlled by a temperature gradient. However, the underlying mechanism is still unclear where the mass transportation velocity in experiment is much lower than that resulting from simulations. Considering that defects are common in fabricated nanotubes, we use molecular dynamics simulations to show that the mass transportation would be considerably impeded by the potential barriers or wells induced by the defects, which provides a possible picture to understand the relative low value at microscopic level. The optimal structure and the factors which would affect the performance are discussed. The result indicates considering defects is helpful in designing nanotube nanomotor and other new nanomotor-based devices.

Molecular-Scale Hydrophilicity Induced by Solute: Molecular-thick Charged Pancakes of Aqueous Salt Solution on Hydrophobic Carbon-based Surfaces

We directly observed molecular-thick aqueous salt-solution pancakes on a hydrophobic graphite surface under ambient conditions employing atomic force microscopy. This observation indicates the unexpected molecular-scale hydrophilicity of the salt solution on graphite surfaces, which is different from the macroscopic wetting property of a droplet standing on the graphite surface. Interestingly, the pancakes spontaneously displayed strong positively charged behavior. Theoretical studies showed that the formation of such positively charged pancakes is attributed to cation-π interactions between Na+ ions in the aqueous solution and aromatic rings on the graphite surface, promoting the adsorption of water molecules together with cations onto the graphite surface; i.e., Na+ ions as a medium adsorbed to the graphite surface through cation-π interactions on one side while at the same time bonding to water molecules through hydration interaction on the other side at a molecular scale. These findings suggest that actual interactions regarding carbon-based graphitic surfaces including those of graphene, carbon nanotubes, and biochar may be significantly different from existing theory and they provide new insight into the control of surface wettability, interactions and related physical, chemical and biological processes.

Galilean Invariant Fluid-Solid Interfacial Dynamics in Lattice Boltzmann Simulations

Galilean invariance is a fundamental property; however, although the lattice Boltzmann equation itself is Galilean invariant, this property is usually not taken into account in the treatment of the fluid-solid interface. Here, we show that consideration of Galilean invariance in fluid-solid interfacial dynamics can greatly enhance the computational accuracy and robustness in a numerical simulation. Surprisingly, simulations are so vastly improved that the force fluctuation is very small and a time average becomes unnecessary.

High critical current density and low anisotropy in textured Sr1-xKxFe2As2 tapes for high field applications

From the application point of view, large critical current densities Jc (H) for superconducting wires are required, preferably for magnetic fields higher than 5 T. Here we show that strong c-axis textured Sr1-xKxFe2As2 tapes with nearly isotropic transport Jc were fabricated by an ex-situ powder-in-tube (PIT) process. At 4.2 K, the Jc values show extremely weak magnetic field dependence and reach high values of 1.7x10^4 A/cm^2 at 10 T and 1.4x10^4 A/cm^2 at 14 T, respectively, these values are by far the highest ever reported for iron based wires and approach the Jc level desired for practical applications. Transmission electron microscopy investigations revealed that amorphous oxide layers at grain boundaries were significantly reduced by Sn addition which resulted in greatly improved intergranular connectivity. Our results demonstrated the strong potential of using iron based superconductors for high field applications.

Effect of starting materials on the superconducting properties of SmFeAsO1-xFx tapes

SmFeAsO1-xFx tapes were prepared using three kinds of starting materials. It shows that the starting materials have an obvious effect on the impurity phases in final superconducting tapes. Compared with the other samples, the samples fabricated by SmAs, FeO, Fe2As, and SmF3 have the smallest arsenide impurity phase and voids. As a result, these samples possess much denser structure and better grain connectivity. Moreover, among the three kinds of samples fabricated in this work, this kind of sample has the highest zero-resistivity temperature ~40 K and largest critical current density ~4600 A/cm^2 in self-field at 4.2 K. This is the highest Jc values reported so far for SmFeAsO1-xFx wires and tapes.

Fabrication and transport properties of Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 multifilamentary superconducting wires

Seven-core Ag/Fe sheathed Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Sr-122) superconducting wires were produced by the ex situ powder-in-tube (PIT) method. The relationship between the cold-work deformation process and the superconducting properties of wires were systematically studied. It was found that flat rolling can efficiently increase the density of the superconducting core and largely improve the transport critical current density (Jc) of as-drawn wires. The Jc of the best sample achieved 21.1 kA/cm^2 at 4.2 K in self field, and showed very weak magnetic field dependence in high fields. Our result suggested a promising future of multifilamentary iron-based superconductors in practical application.

Improved transport critical currents in Ag and Pb co-doped BaxK1-xFe2As2 superconducting tapes

Fe-clad BaxK1-xFe2As2 superconducting tapes were fabricated by the ex situ powder-in-tube method combined with a short high-temperature annealing technique. The effect of annealing time and different dopants on the transport properties of the BaxK1-xFe2As2 tapes were systematically studied. By co-doping with Ag and Pb, the transport critical current density Jc of BaxK1-xFe2As2 tapes was significantly improved in whole field region and the highest transport Jc was up to 1.4x10^4 A/cm^2 (Ic=100 A) at 4.2K in self field. It is proposed that the superior Jc in the co-doped samples are due to the combine effect of Pb doping at low fields and Ag doping at high fields.

Direct observation of nanometer-scale amorphous layers and oxide crystallites at grain boundaries in polycrystalline Sr1-xKxFe2As2 superconductors

We report here an atomic resolution study of the structure and composition of the grain boundaries in polycrystalline Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 superconductor. A large fraction of grain boundaries contain amorphous layers larger than the coherence length, while some others contain nanometer-scale particles sandwiched in between amorphous layers. We also find that there is significant oxygen enrichment at the grain boundaries. Such results explain the relatively low transport critical current density (Jc) of polycrystalline samples with respect to that of bicrystal films.

Enhanced critical current properties in Ba0.6K0.4+xFe2As2 superconductor by over-doping of potassium

Phase-pure polycrystalline Ba0.6K0.4+xFe2As2 with were prepared using a one-step solid-state reaction method. We found that over-doping of potassium can improve critical current density (Jc). High-field Jc for samples with x = 0.1 is three times higher than that for samples with x = 0. Over-doping of K has minimal effect on the critical transition temperature (Tc). Less than 0.5 K degradations in Tc was measured for samples with x = 0.1. TEM revealed high concentration of dislocations in samples with x = 0.1, resulting in enhanced flux pining. Further analyses on magnetization loops for powder samples confirm that K over-doping can promote intra-grain Jc. Our results indicate that slight excess of K in Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 samples is beneficial to high-field applications.

High transport critical current densities in textured Fe-sheathed Sr1-xKxFe2As2+Sn superconducting tapes

We report the realization of grain alignment in Sn-added Sr1-xKxFe2As2 superconducting tapes prepared by ex-situ powder-in-tube method. At 4.2 K, high transport critical current densities Jc of 2.5x10^4 A/cm^2 (Ic = 180 A) in self-field and 3.5x10^3 A/cm^2 (Ic = 25.5 A) in 10 T have been measured. These values are the highest ever reported so far for Fe-based superconducting wires and tapes. We believe the superior Jc in our tape samples are due to well textured grains and strengthened intergrain coupling achieved by Sn addition. Our results demonstrated an encouraging prospect for application of iron based superconductors.

Superconductivity induced by doping Rh in CaFe2-xRhxAs2

In this paper we report the synthesis of iron-based superconductors CaFe2-xRhxAs2 using one-step solid state reaction method, which crystallizes in the ThCr2Si2-type structure with a space group I4/mmm. The systematic evolution of the lattice constants demonstrates that the Fe ions are successfully replaced by the Rh. By increasing the doping content of Rh, the spin-density-wave (SDW) transition in the parent compound is suppressed and superconductivity emerges. The maximum superconducting transition temperature is found at 18.5 K with the doping level of x = 0.15. The temperature dependence of DC magnetization confirms superconducting transitions at around 15 K. The general phase diagram was obtained and found to be similar to the case of Rh-doping Sr122 system. Our results explicitly demonstrate the feasibility of inducing superconductivity in Ca122 compounds by higher d-orbital electrons doping, however, different Rh-doping effect between FeAs122 compounds and FeAs1111 systems still remains an open question.

Synthesis and properties of La-doped CaFe2As2 single crystals with Tc = 42.7 K

Large single crystals of La-doped CaFe2As2 were successfully synthesized by the FeAs self-flux method. The x-ray diffraction patterns suggest high crystalline quality and c-axis orientation. By substitution of trivalent La3+ ions for divalent Ca2+, the resistivity anomaly in the parent compound CaFe2As2 is completely suppressed and a superconducting transition reaches the value of 42.7 K, which is higher than that of about 30 K reported in Saha S. R. et al., arXiv:1105.4798v1. The upper critical field has been determined with the magnetic field along ab-plane and c-axis, yielding an anisotropy of about 3.3.

Transport properties and anisotropy in rare earth doped CaFe2As2 single crystals with Tc above 40 K

In this paper we report the superconductivity above 40 K in the electron doping single crystal Ca1-xRexFe2As2 (Re = La, Ce, Pr). The x-ray diffraction patterns indicate high crystalline quality and c-axis orientation. the resistivity anomaly in the parent compound CaFe2As2 is completely suppressed by partial replacement of Ca by rare earth and a superconducting transition reaches as high as 43 K, which is higher than the value in electron doping FeAs-122 compounds by substituting Fe ions with transition metal, even surpasses the highest values observed in hole doping systems with a transition temperature up to 38 K. The upper critical field has been determined with the magnetic field along ab-plane and c-axis, yielding the anisotropy of 2~3. Hall-effect measurements indicate that the conduction in this material is dominated by electron like charge carriers. Our results explicitly demonstrate the feasibility of inducing superconductivity in Ca122 compounds via electron doping using aliovalent rare earth substitution into the alkaline earth site, which should add more ingredients to the underlying physics of the iron-based superconductors.

Low-temperature synthesis of SmFeAsO0.7F0.3 wires with high transport critical current density

Ag-sheathed SmFeAsO0.7F0.3 (Sm-1111) superconducting wires were prepared by a one-step solid state reaction at temperatures as low as 850~900C, instead of commonly used temperatures of 1150~1250C. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the as-sintered samples is well indexed on the basis of tetragonal ZrCuSiAs-type structure. We characterized transport critical current density Jc of the SmFeAsO0.7F0.3 wires in increasing and subsequently decreasing fields, by a resistive four-probe method. A transport Jc as high as ~1300 A/cm^2 at 4.2 K and self field has been observed for the first time in Sm-1111 type polycrystalline superconductors. The Jc also shows a rapid depression in small applied fields as well as a magnetic-history dependence, indicating weak-linked grain boundaries. The low-temperature synthesis method can be very beneficial to fabricating the RE-1111 iron oxynictides in a convenient and safe way.

Low-temperature synthesis of SmO0.8F0.2FeAs superconductor with Tc = 56.1K

We report a systematic study on the effect of sintering temperature on the structural and superconducting properties of nominal SmO0.8F0.2FeAs fabricated by simple one-step solid state reaction method. A detailed correlation between the sintering temperature, structure, onset transition temperature (Tc) and critical current density (Jc) has been found in all samples of each batch. Most importantly, samples sintered at a low temperature clearly shows high Tc, for example the Tc of the samples sintered at 850C is even above 53 K, and the samples prepared at 1000C display the highest Tc of 56.1 K reported so far. Furthermore, the samples sintered at 1000C also show the highest RRR and the lowest resistivity(57K), indicating the low impurity scattering and enhanced carrier density. However, the maximum Jc of 10510 A/cm^2 at 5 K in self field was achieved in the samples sintered at 1100oC. The dependence of Tc on a-axis lattice constant indicates that the sintering temperature has strong influence on the effective substitution level of F for O. This result suggests that annealing at a temperature of ~1000C seems much better for obtaining high quality 1111 phase oxypnictides, compared to commonly used temperatures of around 1200C.

One-step method to grow Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 single crystals without fluxing agent

Single crystals of Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 with excellent quality have been successfully grown without fluxing agent through a simple one-step method for the first time. X-ray diffraction patterns demonstrate that the samples have high crystalline quality and c-axis orientation. The onset transition temperature is up to 38 K with the zero resistivity temperature about 36.7 K. Both the R-T and M-T data show a very sharp superconducting transition with transition width 0.4 K. We also found that the samples possess very large current carrying ability and high upper critical fields, indicating potential applications requiring very high field. The above simple and safe one-step technique of single crystal growth can be effective in other systems of Fe-based superconductors.
