On the Construction and Correlation Properties of Permutation-Interleaved Zadoff-Chu Sequences

Constant amplitude zero auto-correlation (CAZAC) sequences are widely applied in waveforms for radar and communication systems. Motivated by a recent work [Berggren and Popović, IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 70(8), 6068-6075 (2024)], this paper further investigates the approach to generating CAZAC sequences by interleaving Zadoff-Chu (ZC) sequences with permutation polynomials (PPs). We propose one class of high-degree PPs over the integer ring Z N , and utilize them and their inverses to interleave ZC sequences for constructing CAZAC sequences. It is known that a CAZAC sequence can be extended to an equivalence class by five basic opertations. We further show that the obtained CAZAC sequences are not covered by the equivalence classes of ZC sequences and interleaved ZC sequences by quadratic PPs and their inverses, and prove the sufficiency of the conjecture by Berggren and Popović in the aforementioned work. In addition, we also evaluate the aperiodic auto-correlation of certain ZC sequences from quadratic PPs.

Encoding and Decoding of Several Optimal Rank Metric Codes

This paper presents encoding and decoding algorithms for several families of optimal rank metric codes whose codes are in restricted forms of symmetric, alternating and Hermitian matrices. First, we show the evaluation encoding is the right choice for these codes and then we provide easily reversible encoding methods for each family. Later unique decoding algorithms for the codes are described. The decoding algorithms are interpolation-based and can uniquely correct errors for each code with rank up to $\lfloor(d-1)/2\rfloor$ in polynomial-time, where $d$ is the minimum distance of the code.

Low c-differentially uniform functions via an extension of Dillon's switching method

In this paper we generalize Dillon's switching method to characterize the exact $c$-differential uniformity of functions constructed via this method. More precisely, we modify some PcN/APcN and other functions with known $c$-differential uniformity in a controllable number of coordinates to render more such functions. We present several applications of the method in constructing PcN and APcN functions with respect to all $c\neq 1$. As a byproduct, we generalize some result of [Y. Wu, N. Li, X. Zeng, {\em New PcN and APcN functions over finite fields}, Designs Codes Crypt. 89 (2021), 2637--2651]. Computational results rendering functions with low differential uniformity, as well as, other good cryptographic properties are sprinkled throughout the paper.

On the Differential Properties of the Power Mapping $x^{p^m+2}$

Let $m$ be a positive integer and $p$ a prime. In this paper, we investigate the differential properties of the power mapping $x^{p^m+2}$ over $\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$, where $n=2m$ or $n=2m-1$. For the case $n=2m$, by transforming the derivative equation of $x^{p^m+2}$ and studying some related equations, we completely determine the differential spectrum of this power mapping. For the case $n=2m-1$, the derivative equation can be transformed to a polynomial of degree $p+3$. The problem is more difficult and we obtain partial results about the differential spectrum of $x^{p^m+2}$.

Self-Amplification of Coherent Energy Modulation in Seeded Free-Electron Lasers

The spectroscopic techniques for time-resolved fine analysis of matter require coherent X-ray radiation with femtosecond duration and high average brightness. Seeded free-electron lasers (FELs), which use the frequency up-conversion of an external seed laser to improve temporal coherence, are ideal for providing fully coherent soft X-ray pulses. However, it is difficult to operate seeded FELs at a high repetition rate due to the limitations of present state-of-the-art laser systems. Here, we report the novel self-modulation method for enhancing laser-induced energy modulation, thereby significantly reducing the requirement of an external laser system. Driven by this scheme, we experimentally realize high harmonic generation in a seeded FEL using an unprecedentedly small energy modulation. An electron beam with a laser-induced energy modulation as small as 1.8 times the slice energy spread is used for lasing at the 7th harmonic of a 266-nm seed laser in a single-stage high-gain harmonic generation (HGHG) setup and the 30th harmonic of the seed laser in a two-stage HGHG setup. The results mark a major step towards a high-repetition-rate, fully coherent X-ray FEL.

A complete characterization of the APN property of a class of quadrinomials

In this paper, by the Hasse-Weil bound, we determine the necessary and sufficient condition on coefficients $a_1,a_2,a_3\in\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ with $n=2m$ such that $f(x) = {x}^{3\cdot2^m} + a_1x^{2^{m+1}+1} + a_2 x^{2^m+2} + a_3x^3$ is an APN function over $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$. Our result resolves the first half of an open problem by Carlet in International Workshop on the Arithmetic of Finite Fields, 83-107, 2014.

Binary linear codes with few weights from two-to-one functions

In this paper, we apply two-to-one functions over $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ in two generic constructions of binary linear codes. We consider two-to-one functions in two forms: (1) generalized quadratic functions; and (2) $\left(x^{2^t}+x\right)^e$ with $\gcd(t, n)=1$ and $\gcd\left(e, 2^n-1\right)=1$. Based on the study of the Walsh transforms of those functions or their related-ones, we present many classes of linear codes with few nonzero weights, including one weight, three weights, four weights and five weights. The weight distributions of the proposed codes with one weight and with three weights are determined. In addition, we discuss the minimum distance of the dual of the constructed codes and show that some of them achieve the sphere packing bound. { Moreover, several examples show that some of our codes are optimal and some have the best known parameters.}

Another Generalization of the Reed-Muller Codes

The punctured binary Reed-Muller code is cyclic and was generalized into the punctured generalized Reed-Muller code over $\gf(q)$ in the literature. The major objective of this paper is to present another generalization of the punctured binary Reed-Muller code. Another objective is to construct a family of reversible cyclic codes that are related to the newly generalized Reed-Muller codes.

Microtubule dynamic instability: the role of cracks between protofilaments

Microtubules (MTs) are cytoplasmic protein polymers that are essential for fundamental cellular processes including the maintenance of cell shape, organelle transport and formation of the mitotic spindle. Microtubule dynamic instability is critical for these processes, but it remains poorly understood, in part because the relationship between the structure of the MT tip and the growth/depolymerization transitions is enigmatic. What are the functionally significant aspects of a tip structure that is capable of promoting MT growth, and how do changes in these characteristics cause the transition to depolymerization (catastrophe)? Here we use computational models to investigate the connection between cracks (laterally unbonded regions) between protofilaments and dynamic instability. Our work indicates that it is not the depth of the cracks per se that governs MT dynamic instability. Instead it is whether the cracks terminate in GTP-rich or GDP-rich areas of the MT that governs whether a particular MT tip structure is likely to grow, shrink, or transition: the identity of the crack-terminating subunit pairs has a profound influence on the moment-by-moment behavior of the MT.

On the weight distributions of several classes of cyclic codes from APN monomials

Let $m\geq 3$ be an odd integer and $p$ be an odd prime. % with $p-1=2^rh$, where $h$ is an odd integer. In this paper, many classes of three-weight cyclic codes over $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ are presented via an examination of the condition for the cyclic codes $\mathcal{C}_{(1,d)}$ and $\mathcal{C}_{(1,e)}$, which have parity-check polynomials $m_1(x)m_d(x)$ and $m_1(x)m_e(x)$ respectively, to have the same weight distribution, where $m_i(x)$ is the minimal polynomial of $π^{-i}$ over $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ for a primitive element $π$ of $\mathbb{F}_{p^m}$. %For $p=3$, the duals of five classes of the proposed cyclic codes are optimal in the sense that they meet certain bounds on linear codes. Furthermore, for $p\equiv 3 \pmod{4}$ and positive integers $e$ such that there exist integers $k$ with $\gcd(m,k)=1$ and $τ\in\{0,1,\cdots, m-1\}$ satisfying $(p^k+1)\cdot e\equiv 2 p^τ\pmod{p^m-1}$, the value distributions of the two exponential sums $T(a,b)=\sum\limits_{x\in \mathbb{F}_{p^m}}ω^{\Tr(ax+bx^e)}$ and $ S(a,b,c)=\sum\limits_{x\in \mathbb{F}_{p^m}}ω^{\Tr(ax+bx^e+cx^s)}, $ where $s=(p^m-1)/2$, are settled. As an application, the value distribution of $S(a,b,c)$ is utilized to investigate the weight distribution of the cyclic codes $\mathcal{C}_{(1,e,s)}$ with parity-check polynomial $m_1(x)m_e(x)m_s(x)$. In the case of $p=3$ and even $e$ satisfying the above condition, the duals of the cyclic codes $\mathcal{C}_{(1,e,s)}$ have the optimal minimum distance.

Optimal Ternary Cyclic Codes with Minimum Distance Four and Five

Cyclic codes are an important subclass of linear codes and have wide applications in data storage systems, communication systems and consumer electronics. In this paper, two families of optimal ternary cyclic codes are presented. The first family of cyclic codes has parameters $[3^m-1, 3^m-1-2m, 4]$ and contains a class of conjectured cyclic codes and several new classes of optimal cyclic codes. The second family of cyclic codes has parameters $[3^m-1, 3^m-2-2m, 5]$ and contains a number of classes of cyclic codes that are obtained from perfect nonlinear functions over $\fthreem$, where $m>1$ and is a positive integer.
