A New High Energy Efficiency Scheme Based on Two-Dimension Resource Blocks in Wireless Communication Systems

Energy efficiency (EE) plays a key role in future wireless communication network and it is easily to achieve high EE performance in low SNR regime. In this paper, a new high EE scheme is proposed for a MIMO wireless communication system working in the low SNR regime by using two dimension resource allocation. First, we define the high EE area based on the relationship between the transmission power and the SNR. To meet the constraint of the high EE area, both frequency and space dimension are needed. Besides analysing them separately, we decided to consider frequency and space dimensions as a unit and proposed a two-dimension scheme. Furthermore, considering communication in the high EE area may cause decline of the communication quality, we add quality-of-service(QoS) constraint into the consideration and derive the corresponding EE performance based on the effective capacity. We also derive an approximate expression to simplify the complex EE performance. Finally, our numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Belief-selective Propagation Detection for MIMO Systems

Compared to the linear MIMO detectors, the Belief Propagation (BP) detector has shown greater capabilities in achieving near optimal performance and better nature to iteratively cooperate with channel decoders. Aiming at real applications, recent works mainly fall into the category of reducing the complexity by simplified calculations, at the expense of performance sacrifice. However, the complexity is still unsatisfactory with exponentially increasing complexity or required exponentiation operations. Furthermore, due to the inherent loopy structure, the existing BP detectors persistently encounter error floor in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region, which becomes even worse with calculation approximation. This work aims at a revised BP detector, named {Belief-selective Propagation (BsP)} detector by selectively utilizing the \emph{trusted} incoming messages with sufficiently large \textit{a priori} probabilities for updates. Two proposed strategies: symbol-based truncation (ST) and edge-based simplification (ES) squeeze the complexity (orders lower than the Original-BP), while greatly relieving the error floor issue over a wide range of antenna and modulation combinations. For the $16$-QAM $8 \times 4$ MIMO system, the $\mathcal{B}(1,1)$ {BsP} detector achieves more than $4$\,dB performance gain (@$\text{BER}=10^{-4}$) with roughly $4$ orders lower complexity than the Original-BP detector. Trade-off between performance and complexity towards different application requirement can be conveniently obtained by configuring the ST and ES parameters.

Spatiotemporal 2-D Channel Coding for Very Low Latency Reliable MIMO Transmission

To fully support vertical industries, 5G and its corresponding channel coding are expected to meet requirements of different applications. However, for applications of 5G and beyond 5G (B5G) such as URLLC, the transmission latency is required to be much shorter than that in eMBB. Therefore, the resulting channel code length reduces drastically. In this case, the traditional 1-D channel coding suffers a lot from the performance degradation and fails to deliver strong reliability with very low latency. To remove this bottleneck, new channel coding scheme beyond the existing 1-D one is in urgent need. By making full use of the spacial freedom of massive MIMO systems, this paper devotes itself in proposing a spatiotemporal 2-D channel coding for very low latency reliable transmission. For a very short time-domain code length $N^{\text{time}}=16$, $64 \times 128$ MIMO system employing the proposed spatiotemporal 2-D coding scheme successfully shows more than $3$\,dB performance gain at $\text{FER}=10^{-3}$, compared to the 1-D time-domain channel coding. It is noted that the proposed coding scheme is suitable for different channel codes and enjoys high flexibility to adapt to difference scenarios. By appropriately selecting the code rate, code length, and the number of codewords in the time and space domains, the proposed coding scheme can achieve a good trade-off between the transmission latency and reliability.

Supervised Contrastive CSI Representation Learning for Massive MIMO Positioning

Similarity metric is crucial for massive MIMO positioning utilizing channel state information~(CSI). In this letter, we propose a novel massive MIMO CSI similarity learning method via deep convolutional neural network~(DCNN) and contrastive learning. A contrastive loss function is designed considering multiple positive and negative CSI samples drawn from a training dataset. The DCNN encoder is trained using the loss so that positive samples are mapped to points close to the anchor's encoding, while encodings of negative samples are kept away from the anchor's in the representation space. Evaluation results of fingerprint-based positioning on a real-world CSI dataset show that the learned similarity metric improves positioning accuracy significantly compared with other known state-of-the-art methods.

Hybrid Beamforming/Combining for Millimeter Wave MIMO: A Machine Learning Approach

Hybrid beamforming (HB) has emerged as a promising technology to support ultra high transmission capacity and with low complexity for Millimeter Wave (mmWave) multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) system. However, the design of digital and analog beamformer is a challenge task with non-convex optimization, especially for the multi-user scenario. Recently, the blooming of deep learning research provides a new vision for the signal processing of communication system. In this work, we propose a deep neural network based HB for the multi-User mmWave massive MIMO system, referred as DNHB. The HB system is formulated as an autoencoder neural network, which is trained in a style of end-to-end self-supervised learning. With the strong representation capability of deep neural network, the proposed DNHB exhibits superior performance than the traditional linear processing methods. According to the simulation results, DNHB outperforms about 2 dB in terms of bit error rate (BER) performance compared with existing methods.

Realizing long radio-frequency quadrupole accelerators with multiple shorter and independent cavities

It is well known that the tuning of a long radio-frequency quadrupole accelerator is demanding. This study investigated how to realize efficient long RFQ accelerators with multiple shorter and independent cavities. From the RF point of view, the use of shorter cavities has many advantages e.g. enlarged mode separation and simplified RF tuning, but the beam matching between cavities will become an issue, especially at high current and low energy. Taking a more than 9 m long, high current machine as an example, this paper presents the design concepts and methods leading to good beam quality and high beam transmission throughout a multi-stage RFQ accelerator.

Storing Cycles in Hopfield-type Networks with Pseudoinverse Learning Rule - Retrievability and Bifurcation Analysis

In this paper, we study retrievability of admissible cycles and the dynamics of the networks constructed from admissible cycles with the pseudoinverse learning rule. Retrievability of admissible cycles in networks with $C_0>0$ and $λ$ sufficiently large are discussed. Based on the linear stability analysis we derive a complete description of all possible local bifurcations of the trivial solution for the networks constructed from admissible cycles. We illustrate numerically that, depending on the structural features, the admissible cycles are respectively stored and retrieved as attracting limit cycles, unstable periodic solutions and delay-induced long-lasting transient oscillations, and the transition from fixed points to the attracting limit cycle bifurcating from the trivial solution takes place through multiple saddle-nodes on limit cycle bifurcations.

Storing cycles in Hopfield-type networks with pseudoinverse learning rule: admissibility and network topology

Cyclic patterns of neuronal activity are ubiquitous in animal nervous systems, and partially responsible for generating and controlling rhythmic movements such as locomotion, respiration, swallowing and so on. Clarifying the role of the network connectivities for generating cyclic patterns is fundamental for understanding the generation of rhythmic movements. In this paper, the storage of binary cycles in neural networks is investigated. We call a cycle $Σ$ admissible if a connectivity matrix satisfying the cycle's transition conditions exists, and construct it using the pseudoinverse learning rule. Our main focus is on the structural features of admissible cycles and corresponding network topology. We show that $Σ$ is admissible if and only if its discrete Fourier transform contains exactly $r={rank}(Σ)$ nonzero columns. Based on the decomposition of the rows of $Σ$ into loops, where a loop is the set of all cyclic permutations of a row, cycles are classified as simple cycles, separable or inseparable composite cycles. Simple cycles contain rows from one loop only, and the network topology is a feedforward chain with feedback to one neuron if the loop-vectors in $Σ$ are cyclic permutations of each other. Composite cycles contain rows from at least two disjoint loops, and the neurons corresponding to the rows in $Σ$ from the same loop are identified with a cluster. Networks constructed from separable composite cycles decompose into completely isolated clusters. For inseparable composite cycles at least two clusters are connected, and the cluster-connectivity is related to the intersections of the spaces spanned by the loop-vectors of the clusters. Simulations showing successfully retrieved cycles in continuous-time Hopfield-type networks and in networks of spiking neurons are presented.

A geometric method for spatiotemporal coherent structure analysis

We describe a geometric method to quantify wave patterns observed in the nervous system, which are non-stationary and with a mixture of spiral, target, plane and irregular waves. The method analyzes fluctuations of the energy angular distribution in two-dimensional Fourier spectrum of wave patterns, which reflects changes of the orientation distribution of wavefronts. We show that the number of the genuine peaks in generalized phase spectrum is close to the number of the coherent space-time clusters arising in wave patterns, and propose to use the number as a complexity measure.

Efficient Network for Non-Binary QC-LDPC Decoder

This paper presents approaches to develop efficient network for non-binary quasi-cyclic LDPC (QC-LDPC) decoders. By exploiting the intrinsic shifting and symmetry properties of the check matrices, significant reduction of memory size and routing complexity can be achieved. Two different efficient network architectures for Class-I and Class-II non-binary QC-LDPC decoders have been proposed, respectively. Comparison results have shown that for the code of the 64-ary (1260, 630) rate-0.5 Class-I code, the proposed scheme can save more than 70.6% hardware required by shuffle network than the state-of-the-art designs. The proposed decoder example for the 32-ary (992, 496) rate-0.5 Class-II code can achieve a 93.8% shuffle network reduction compared with the conventional ones. Meanwhile, based on the similarity of Class-I and Class-II codes, similar shuffle network is further developed to incorporate both classes of codes at a very low cost.

Low-Latency SC Decoder Architectures for Polar Codes

Nowadays polar codes are becoming one of the most favorable capacity achieving error correction codes for their low encoding and decoding complexity. However, due to the large code length required by practical applications, the few existing successive cancellation (SC) decoder implementations still suffer from not only the high hardware cost but also the long decoding latency. This paper presents novel several approaches to design low-latency decoders for polar codes based on look-ahead techniques. Look-ahead techniques can be employed to reschedule the decoding process of polar decoder in numerous approaches. However, among those approaches, only well-arranged ones can achieve good performance in terms of both latency and hardware complexity. By revealing the recurrence property of SC decoding chart, the authors succeed in reducing the decoding latency by 50% with look-ahead techniques. With the help of VLSI-DSP design techniques such as pipelining, folding, unfolding, and parallel processing, methodologies for four different polar decoder architectures have been proposed to meet various application demands. Sub-structure sharing scheme has been adopted to design the merged processing element (PE) for further hardware reduction. In addition, systematic methods for construction refined pipelining decoder (2nd design) and the input generating circuits (ICG) block have been given. Detailed gate-level analysis has demonstrated that the proposed designs show latency advantages over conventional ones with similar hardware cost.

Reduced-Latency SC Polar Decoder Architectures

Polar codes have become one of the most favorable capacity achieving error correction codes (ECC) along with their simple encoding method. However, among the very few prior successive cancellation (SC) polar decoder designs, the required long code length makes the decoding latency high. In this paper, conventional decoding algorithm is transformed with look-ahead techniques. This reduces the decoding latency by 50%. With pipelining and parallel processing schemes, a parallel SC polar decoder is proposed. Sub-structure sharing approach is employed to design the merged processing element (PE). Moreover, inspired by the real FFT architecture, this paper presents a novel input generating circuit (ICG) block that can generate additional input signals for merged PEs on-the-fly. Gate-level analysis has demonstrated that the proposed design shows advantages of 50% decoding latency and twice throughput over the conventional one with similar hardware cost.
