Lattice QCD determination of the $γZ$ box contribution to the proton weak charge

We present the first lattice QCD determination of the $γZ$ box contribution to parity-violating electron-proton scattering, $\square_{γZ}$ , a key ingredient for the precise tests of the Standard Model via the proton weak charge. Our calculation covers the electron beam energies up to $E =155 MeV$. For the axial-vector component, we achieve reduced uncertainties across the entire energy range compared with phenomenological estimates. For the vector component, the uncertainties remain slightly larger after continuum extrapolation. At $E = 0$, where the vector part vanishes, we obtain $\square_{γZ}= 0.00412(9)$ , reducing the uncertainty by a factor of $2$ relative to the most precise previous determination. Incorporating this result yields an updated weak charge of $Q_{W}^{p}= 0.06987(50)$ . The calculated energy dependence of $\square_{γZ}$ further provides a first-principles input for the upcoming P2 experiment at Mainz, which will operate at the optimized beam energy of $155 MeV$ to extract $Q_{W}^p$.

Incremental FastPitch: Chunk-based High Quality Text to Speech

Parallel text-to-speech models have been widely applied for real-time speech synthesis, and they offer more controllability and a much faster synthesis process compared with conventional auto-regressive models. Although parallel models have benefits in many aspects, they become naturally unfit for incremental synthesis due to their fully parallel architecture such as transformer. In this work, we propose Incremental FastPitch, a novel FastPitch variant capable of incrementally producing high-quality Mel chunks by improving the architecture with chunk-based FFT blocks, training with receptive-field constrained chunk attention masks, and inference with fixed size past model states. Experimental results show that our proposal can produce speech quality comparable to the parallel FastPitch, with a significant lower latency that allows even lower response time for real-time speech applications.

Lattice calculation of $χ_{c0} \rightarrow 2γ$ decay width

We perform a lattice QCD calculation of the $χ_{c0} \rightarrow 2γ$ decay width using a model-independent method which does not require a momentum extrapolation of the corresponding off-shell form factors. The simulation is performed on ensembles of $N_f=2$ twisted mass lattice QCD gauge configurations with three different lattice spacings. After a continuum extrapolation, the decay width is obtained to be $Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c0})=3.65(83)_{\mathrm{stat}}(21)_{\mathrm{lat.syst}}(66)_{\mathrm{syst}}\, \textrm{keV}$. Albeit this large statistical error, our result is compatible with the experimental results within 1.3$σ$. Potential improvements of the lattice calculation in the future are also discussed.

Lattice QCD Study of Transverse-Momentum Dependent Soft Function

In this work, we perform a lattice QCD study of the intrinsic, rapidity-independent soft function within the framework of large momentum effective theory. The computation is carried out using a gauge ensemble of $N_f=2+1+1$ clover-improved twisted mass fermion. After applying an appropriate renormalization procedure and the removal of significant higher-twist contamination, we obtain the intrinsic soft function that is comparable to the one-loop perturbative result at large external momentum. The determination of the nonperturbative soft function from first principles is crucial to sharpen our understanding of the processes with small transverse momentum such as the Drell-Yan production and the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. Additionally, we calculate the Collins-Soper evolution kernel using the quasi-transverse-momentum-dependent wave function as input.

Dynamic Normalization

Batch Normalization has become one of the essential components in CNN. It allows the network to use a higher learning rate and speed up training. And the network doesn't need to be initialized carefully. However, in our work, we find that a simple extension of BN can increase the performance of the network. First, we extend BN to adaptively generate scale and shift parameters for each mini-batch data, called DN-C (Batch-shared and Channel-wise). We use the statistical characteristics of mini-batch data ($E[X], Std[X]\in\mathbb{R}^{c}$) as the input of SC module. Then we extend BN to adaptively generate scale and shift parameters for each channel of each sample, called DN-B (Batch and Channel-wise). Our experiments show that DN-C model can't train normally, but DN-B model has very good robustness. In classification task, DN-B can improve the accuracy of the MobileNetV2 on ImageNet-100 more than 2% with only 0.6% additional Mult-Adds. In detection task, DN-B can improve the accuracy of the SSDLite on MS-COCO nearly 4% mAP with the same settings. Compared with BN, DN-B has stable performance when using higher learning rate or smaller batch size.

A Lattice Study of the Two-photon Decay Widths for Scalar and Pseudo-scalar Charmonium

In this exploratory study, two photon decay widths of pseudo-scalar ($η_c$) and scalar ($χ_{c0}$) charmonium are computed using two ensembles of $N_f=2$ twisted mass lattice QCD gauge configurations. The simulation is performed two lattice ensembles with lattice spacings $a=0.067$ fm with size $32^3\times{64}$ and $a=0.085$ fm with size $24^3\times{48}$, respectively. The results for the decay widths for the two charmonia are obtained which are in the right ballpark however smaller than the experimental ones. Possible reasons for these discrepancies are discussed.

Field sparsening for the construction of the correlation functions in lattice QCD

Two field-sparsening methods, namely the sparse-grid method and the random field selection method, are used in this paper for the construction of the 2-point and 3-point correlation functions in lattice QCD. We argue that, due to the high correlation among the lattice correlators at different field points associated with source, current, and sink locations, one can save a lot of computational time by performing the summation over a subset of the lattice sites. Furthermore, with this strategy, one only needs to store a small fraction of the full quark propagators. It is found that the number of field points can be reduced by a factor of $\sim$100 for the point-source operator and a factor of $\sim$1000 for the Gaussian-smeared operator, while the uncertainties of the correlators only increase by $\sim$15\%. Therefore, with a modest cost of the computational resources, one can approach the precision of the all-to-all correlators using the field-sparsening methods.

Gate-tunable van der Waals heterostructure for reconfigurable neural network vision sensor

Early processing of visual information takes place in the human retina. Mimicking neurobiological structures and functionalities of the retina provide a promising pathway to achieving vision sensor with highly efficient image processing. Here, we demonstrate a prototype vision sensor that operates via the gate-tunable positive and negative photoresponses of the van der Waals (vdW) vertical heterostructures. The sensor emulates not only the neurobiological functionalities of bipolar cells and photoreceptors but also the unique synaptic connectivity between bipolar cells and photoreceptors. By tuning gate voltage for each pixel, we achieve reconfigurable vision sensor for simultaneously image sensing and processing. Furthermore, our prototype vision sensor itself can be trained to classify the input images, via updating the gate voltages applied individually to each pixel in the sensor. Our work indicates that vdW vertical heterostructures offer a promising platform for the development of neural network vision sensor.

Hadron-Hadron Interactions from $N_f=2+1+1$ Lattice QCD: The $ρ$-resonance

We present an investigation of the Rho-meson from Nf=2+1+1 flavour lattice QCD. The calculation is performed based on gauge configuration ensembles produced by the ETM collaboration with three lattice spacing values and pion masses ranging from 230 MeV to 500 MeV. Applying the Lüscher method phase shift curves are determined for all ensembles separately. Assuming a Breit-Wigner form, the Rho-meson mass and width are determined by a fit to these phase shift curves. Mass and width combined are then extrapolated to the chiral limit, while lattice artefacts are not detectable within our statistical uncertainties. For the Rho-meson mass extrapolated to the physical point we find good agreement with experiment. The corresponding decay width differs by about two standard deviations from the experimental value.

Parton distribution functions of $Δ^+$ on the lattice

We perform a first calculation for the unpolarized parton distribution function of the $Δ^+$ baryon using lattice QCD simulations within the framework of Large Momentum Effective Theory. Two ensembles of $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass fermions are utilized with a pion mass of 270 MeV and 360 MeV, respectively. The baryon, which is treated as a stable single-particle state, is boosted with momentum $P_3$ with values $\{0.42,0.83,1.25\}$ GeV, and we utilize momentum smearing to improve the signal. The unpolarized parton distribution function of $Δ^+$ is obtained using a non-perturbative renormalization and a one-loop formula for the matching, with encouraging precision. In particular, we compute the $\overline{d}(x)-\overline{u}(x)$ asymmetry and compare it with the same quantity in the nucleon, in a first attempt towards resolving the physical mechanism responsible for generating such asymmetry.

Three Photon Decay of $J/ψ$ from Lattice QCD

Three photon decay rate of $J/ψ$ is studied using two $N_f=2$ twisted mass gauge ensembles with lattice spacings $a\simeq 0.085$ fm (I) and $0.067$ fm(II). Using a new method, only the correlation functions directly related to the physical decay width are computed with all polarizations of the initial and final states summed over. Our results for such rare decay on the two ensembles are: $\mathcal{B}_{I,II}(J/ψ\rightarrow 3γ)=(1.614 \pm 0.016 \pm 0.261)\times 10^{-5},(1.809 \pm 0.051 \pm 0.295)\times 10^{-5}$ where the first errors are statistical and the second are estimates from systematics. We also propose a method to analyze the Dalitz plot of the corresponding process based on the lattice data which can provide direct information for the experiments.

Ward Identity of the Vector Current and the Decay Rate of $η_c\rightarrowγγ$ in Lattice QCD

Using a recently proposed method arXiv:1910.11597 (Yu Meng et al.), we study the two-photon decay rate of $η_c$ using two $N_f=2$ twisted mass gauge ensembles with lattice spacings $0.067$fm and $0.085$fm. The results obtained from these two ensembles can be extrapolated in a naive fashion to the continuum limit, yielding a result that is consistent with the experimental one within two standard deviations. To be specific, we obtain the results for two-photon decay of $η_c$ as $\mathcal{B}(η_c\rightarrow 2γ)= 1.29(3)(18)\times 10^{-4}$ where the first error is statistical and the second is our estimate for the systematic error caused by the finite lattice spacing. It turns out that Ward identity for the vector current is of vital importance within this new method. We find that the Ward identity is violated for local current with a finite lattice spacing, however it will be restored after the continuum limit is taken.

A coupled-channel lattice study on the resonance-like structure $Z_c(3900)$

In this exploratory study, near-threshold scattering of $D$ and $\bar{D}^*$ meson is investigated using lattice QCD with $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass fermion configurations. The calculation is performed within the coupled-channel Lüscher's finite-size formalism. The study focuses on the channel with $I^G(J^{PC})=1^+(1^{+-})$ where the resonance-like structure $Z_c(3900)$ was discovered. We first identify the most relevant two channels of the problem and the lattice study is performed within the two-channel scattering model. Combined with a two-channel Ross-Shaw theory, scattering parameters are extracted from the energy levels by solving the generalized eigenvalue problem. Our results on the scattering length parameters suggest that, at the particular lattice parameters that we studied, the best fitted parameters do not correspond to a peak behavior in the elastic scattering cross section near the threshold. Furthermore, within the zero-range Ross-Shaw theory, the scenario of a narrow resonance close to the threshold is disfavored beyond $3σ$ level.

Towards the understanding of $Z_c(3900)$ from lattice QCD

Within the framework of three-channel Ross-Shaw effective range theory, we derive the constraints among different parameters of the theory in the case of a narrow resonance close to the threshold of the third channel, which is relevant for the resonance-like structure $Z_c(3900)$. The usage of these constraint relations, together with the multi-channel Lüscher formula in lattice QCD calculations are also discussed and the strategies are outlined.

A Lattice Study of $(\bar{D}_1 D^{*})^\pm$ Near-threshold Scattering

In this exploratory lattice study, low-energy near threshold scattering of the $(\bar{D}_1 D^{*})^\pm$ meson system is analyzed using lattice QCD with $N_f=2$ twisted mass fermion configurations. Both s-wave ($J^P=0^-$) and p-wave ($J^P=1^+$) channels are investigated. It is found that the interaction between the two charmed mesons is attractive near the threshold in both channels. This calculation provides some hints in the searching of resonances or bound states around the threshold of $(\bar{D}_1 D^{*})^\pm$ system.

Review on Hadron Spectroscopy

I review some of the lattice results on spectroscopy and resonances in the past years. For the conventional hadron spectrum computations, focus has been put on the isospin breaking effects, QED effects, and simulations near the physical pion mass point. I then go through several single-channel scattering studies within Lüscher formalism, a method that has matured over the past few years. The topics cover light mesons and also the charmed mesons, with the latter case intimately related to the recently discovered exotic $XYZ$ particles. Other possible related formalisms that are available on the market are also discussed.

Spectrum and Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes of $Ω$ baryons from lattice QCD

The $Ω$ baryons with $J^P=3/2^\pm, 1/2^\pm$ are studied on the lattice in the quenched approximation. Their mass levels are ordered as $M_{3/2^+}<M_{3/2^-}\approx M_{1/2^-}<M_{1/2^+}$, as is expected from the constituent quark model. The mass values are also close to those of the four $Ω$ states observed in experiments, respectively. We calculate the Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes of $Ω(3/2^+)$ and $Ω(1/2^+)$ and find there is a radial node for the $Ω(1/2^+)$ Bethe-Salpeter amplitude, which may imply that $Ω(1/2^+)$ is an orbital excitation of $Ω$ baryons as a member of the $(D,L_N^P)=(70,0_2^+)$ supermultiplet in the $SU(6)\bigotimes O(3)$ quark model description. Our results are helpful for identifying the quantum number of experimentally observed $Ω$ states.

The $k$-spaces property of free Abelian topological groups over non-metrizable Lašnev spaces

Given a Tychonoff space $X$, let $A(X)$ be the free Abelian topological group over $X$ in the sense of Markov. For every $n\in\mathbb{N}$, let $A_n(X)$ denote the subspace of $A(X)$ that consists of words of reduced length at most $n$ with respect to the free basis $X$. In this paper, we show that $A_4(X)$ is a $k$-space if and only if $A(X)$ is a $k$-space for the non-metrizable Lašnev space $X$, which gives a complementary for one result of K. Yamada's. In addition, we also show that, under the assumption of $\flat=ω_1$, the subspace $A_3(X)$ is a $k$-space if and only if $A(X)$ is a $k$-space for the non-metrizable Lašnev space $X$. However, under the assumption of $\flat>ω_1$, we provide a non-metrizable Lašnev space $X$ such that $A_3(X)$ is a $k$-space but $A(X)$ is not a $k$-space.

The countable type properties in free paratopological groups

A space $X$ is of countable type (resp. subcountable type) if every compact subspace $F$ of $X$ is contained in a compact subspace $K$ that is of countable character (resp. countable pseudocharacter) in $X$. In this paper, we mainly show that: (1) For a functionally Hausdorff space $X$, the free paratopological group $FP(X)$ and the free abelian paratopological group $AP(X)$ are of countable type if and only if $X$ is discrete; (2) For a functionally Hausdorff space $X$, if the free abelian paratopological group $AP(X)$ is of subcountable type then $X$ has countable pseudocharacter. Moreover, we also show that, for an arbitrary Hausdorff $μ$-space $X$, if $AP_{2}(X)$ or $FP_{2}(X)$ is locally compact, then $X$ is homeomorphic to the topological sum of a compact space and a discrete space.

Two Photon Decays of $η_c$ from Lattice QCD

We present an exploratory lattice study for the two-photon decay of $η_c$ using $N_f=2$ twisted mass lattice QCD gauge configurations generated by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration. Two different lattice spacings of $a=0.067$fm and $a=0.085$fm are used in the study, both of which are of physical size of 2$fm$. The decay widths are found to be $1.025(5)$KeV for the coarser lattice and $1.062(5)$KeV for the finer lattice respectively where the errors are purely statistical. A naive extrapolation towards the continuum limit yields $Γ\simeq 1.122(14)$KeV which is smaller than the previous quenched result and most of the current experimental results. Possible reasons are discussed.

Two Weak Forms of Countability Axioms in Free Topological Groups

Given a Tychonoff space $X$, let $F(X)$ and $A(X)$ be respectively the free topological group and the free Abelian topological group over $X$ in the sense of Markov. For every $n\in\mathbb{N}$, let $F_{n}(X)$ (resp. $A_n(X)$) denote the subspace of $F(X)$ (resp. $A(X)$) that consists of words of reduced length at most $n$ with respect to the free basis $X$. In this paper, we discuss two weak forms of countability axioms in $F(X)$ or $A(X)$, namely the $csf$-countability and $snf$-countability. We provide some characterizations of the $csf$-countability and $snf$-countability of $F(X)$ and $A(X)$ for various classes of spaces $X$. In addition, we also study the $csf$-countability and $snf$-countability of $F_n(X)$ or $A_n(X)$, for $n=2, 3, 4$. Some results of Arhangel'ski\vı in \cite{A1980} and Yamada in \cite{Y1998} are generalized. An affirmative answer to an open question posed by Li et al. in \cite{LLL} is provided.

Low-energy Scattering of $(D^{*}\bar{D}^{*})^\pm$ System and the Resonance-like Structure $Z_c(4025)$

In this paper, low-energy scattering of the $(D^{*}\bar{D}^{*})^\pm$ meson system is studied within Lüscher's finite-size formalism using $N_{f}=2$ twisted mass gauge field configurations. With three different pion mass values, the $s$-wave threshold scattering parameters, namely the scattering length $a_0$ and the effective range $r_0$, are extracted in $J^P=1^+$ channel. Our results indicate that, in this particular channel, the interaction between the two vector charmed mesons is weakly repulsive in nature hence do not support the possibility of a shallow bound state for the two mesons, at least for the pion mass values being studied. This study provides some useful information on the nature of the newly discovered resonance-like structure $Z_c(4025)$ observed in various experiments.

Phase transition in finite density and temperature lattice QCD

We investigate the behavior of the chiral condensate in lattice QCD at finite temperature and finite chemical potential. The study was done using two flavors of light quarks and with a series of $β$ and $ma$ at the lattice size $24\times12^{2}\times6$. The calculation was done in the Taylar expansion formalism. We are able to calculate the first and second order derivatives of $\langle\barψψ\rangle$ in both isoscalar and isovector channels. With the first derivatives being small, we find that the second derivatives are sizable close to the phase transition and the magnitude of $\barψψ$ decreases under the influence of finite chemical potential in both channels.

The mapping $i_{2}$ on the free paratopological groups

Let $FP(X)$ be the free paratopological group over a topological space $X$. For each non-negative integer $n\in\mathbb{N}$, denote by $FP_{n}(X)$ the subset of $FP(X)$ consisting of all words of reduced length at most $n$, and $i_{n}$ by the natural mapping from $(X\bigoplus X^{-1}\bigoplus\{e\})^{n}$ to $FP_{n}(X)$. In this paper, we mainly improve some results of A.S. Elfard and P. Nickolas's [On the topology of free paratopological groups. II, Topology Appl., 160(2013), 220--229.]. The main result is that the natural mapping $i_{2}: (X\bigoplus X_{d}^{-1}\bigoplus\{e\})^{2}\longrightarrow FP_{2}(X)$ is a closed mapping if and only if every neighborhood $U$ of the diagonal $Δ_{1}$ in $X_{d}\times X$ is a member of the finest quasi-uniformity on $X$, where $X$ is a $T_{1}$-space and $X_{d}$ denotes $X$ when equipped with the discrete topology in place of its given topology.

Generalized Lüscher's Formula in Multichannel Baryon-Baryon Scattering

In this paper, Lüscher's formula is generalized to the case of two spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ particles in two-channel scattering based on Ref. \cite{Li:2012bi}. This is first done in a non-relativistic quantum mechanics model and then generalized to quantum field theory. We show that Lüscher's formula obtained from these two different methods are equivalent up to terms that are exponentially suppressed in the box size. This formalism can be readily applied to future lattice QCD calculations.

Glueballs in charmonia radiative decays

Scalar \cite{scalar_paper} and tensor \cite{tensor_paper} glueballs created in $J/ψ$ radiative decays are studied in quenched lattice QCD. Using two anisotropic lattices to approach the continuum limit, we compute the relevant form factors responsible for the decay rates for $J/ψ\rightarrowγG_{0^{++}}$ and $J/ψ\rightarrowγG_{2^{++}}$. Comparing with the existing experimental data, it is argued that $f_0(1710)$ is a favorable candidate for scalar glueball. The decay rate for $J/ψ\rightarrowγG_{2^{++}}$ is found to be quite substantial. A comprehensive search in the tensor channel on BESIII is therefore suggested.

Low-energy Scattering of $(D\bar{D}^{*})^\pm$ System And the Resonance-like Structure $Z_c(3900)$

In this exploratory lattice study, low-energy scattering of the $(D\bar{D}^{*})^\pm$ meson system is analyzed using lattice QCD with $N_f=2$ twisted mass fermion configurations with three pion mass values. The calculation is performed within single-channel Lüscher's finite-size formalism. The threshold scattering parameters, namely the scattering length $a_0$ and the effective range $r_0$, for the $s$-wave scattering in $J^P=1^+$ channel are extracted. For the cases in our study, the interaction between the two charmed mesons is weakly repulsive. Our lattice results therefore do not support the possibility of a shallow bound state for the two mesons for the pion mass values we studied. This calculation provides some useful information on the nature of the newly discovered resonance-like structure $Z_c(3900)$ by various experimental groups.

Lattice Study of Radiative $J/ψ$ Decay to a Tensor Glueball

The radiative decay of $J/ψ$ into a pure gauge tensor glueball is studied in the quenched lattice QCD formalism. With two anisotropic lattices, the mutlipole amplitudes E_1(0), M_2(0) and E_3(0) are obtained to be 0.114(12)(6)GeV, -0.011(5)(1)GeV, and 0.023(8)(1)GeV, respectively. The first error comes from the statistics, the Q^2 interpolation, and the continuum extrapolation, while the second is due to the uncertainty of the scale parameter r_0^{-1}=410(20) MeV. Thus the partial decay width $Γ(J/ψ\rightarrow γG_{2^{++}})$ is estimated to be 1.01(22)(10) keV which corresponds to a large branch ratio 1.1(2)(1)x10^{-2}. The phenomenological implication of this result is also discussed.

The transition width of $η_{c2}\to γJ/ψ$ is also obtained with a value $Γ=3.8(9)$ keV. In this paper, we firstly construct a Hausdorff non-submetrizable paratopological group $G$ in which every point is a $G_δ$-set, which gives a negative answer to Arhangel'ski\vı\ and Tkachenko's question [Topological Groups and Related Structures, Atlantis Press and World Sci., 2008]. Further, we prove that a regular, countable, locally $k_ω$-paratopological group is a discrete topological group or contains a closed copy of $S_ω$. Scalar Glueball in Radiative $J/ψ$ Decay on Lattice

The form factors in the radiative decay of $J/ψ$ to a scalar glueball are studied within quenched lattice QCD on anisotropic lattices. The continuum extrapolation is carried out by using two different lattice spacings. With the results of these form factors, the partial width of $J/ψ$ radiatively decaying into the pure gauge scalar glueball is predicted to be 0.35(8) keV, which corresponds to a branching ratio of 3.8(9)x10^{-3}. By comparing with the experiments, out results indicate that f_0(1710) has a larger overlap with the pure gauge glueball than other related scalar mesons.

Generalized Lüscher Formula in Multi-channel Baryon-Meson Scattering

Lüscher's formula relates the elastic scattering phase shifts to the two-particle energy levels in a finite cubic box. The original formula was obtained for elastic scattering of two massive spinless particles in the center of mass frame. In this paper, we consider the case for the scattering of a spin 1/2 particle with a spinless particle in multi-channel scattering. A generalized relation between the energy of two particle system and the scattering matrix elements is established. We first obtain this relation using quantum-mechanics in both center-of-mass frame and in a general moving frame. The result is then generalized to quantum field theory using methods outlined in Ref. \cite{Hansen:2012tf}. We verify that the results obtained using both methods are equivalent up to terms that are exponentially suppressed in the box size.

A note on rectifiable spaces

In this paper, we firstly discuss the question: Is $l_{2}^{\infty}$ homeomorphic to a rectifiable space or a paratopological group? And then, we mainly discuss locally compact rectifiable spaces, and show that a locally compact and separable rectifiable space is $σ$-compact, which gives an affirmative answer to A.V. Arhangel'skiǐ and M.M. Choban's question [On remainders of rectifiable spaces, Topology Appl., 157(2010), 789-799]. Next, we show that a rectifiable space $X$ is strongly Fr$\acute{e}$chet-Urysohn if and only if $X$ is an $α_{4}$-sequential space. Moreover, we discuss the metrizabilities of rectifiable spaces, which gives a partial answer for a question posed in \cite{LFC2009}. Finally, we consider the remainders of rectifiable spaces, which improve some results in \cite{A2005, A2007, A2009, Liu2009}.

Complementary-like Graphene Logic Gates Controlled by Electrostatic Doping

Realization of logic circuits from graphene is very attractive for high-speed nanoelectronics. However, the intrinsic ambipolar nature hinders the formation of graphene logic devices with the conventional complementary architecture. Using electrostatic doping modulation, we show here a facile method to control the charge neutrality points and form a complementary-like structure, in which the ambipolar conduction is used as a benefit rather than a drawback to construct logic devices. A band gap is also introduced in the channels to improve the switching ratio of the graphene transistors. For the first time, complementary-like NOR and NAND logic gates were demonstrated. This method provides a possible route for logic circuits from ambipolar graphene and, in principle, can be also extended to other ambipolar semiconductors, such as organic compounds and carbon nanotube thin films.

Thermal properties of glueballs in SU(3) Yang-Mills theory are investigated in a large temperature range from $0.3T_c$ to $1.9T_c$ on anisotropic lattices. The glueball operators are optimized for the projection of the ground states by the variational method with a smearing scheme. Their thermal correlators are calculated in all 20 symmetry channels. It is found in all channels that the pole masses $M_G$ of glueballs remain almost constant when the temperature is approaching the critical temperature $T_c$ from below, and start to reduce gradually with the temperature going above $T_c$. The correlators in the $0^{++}$, $0^{-+}$, and $2^{++}$ channels are also analyzed based on the Breit-Wigner $\emph{Ansatz}$ by assuming a thermal width $Γ$ to the pole mass $ω_0$ of each thermal glueball ground state. While the values of $ω_0$ are insensitive to $T$ in the whole temperature range, the thermal widths $Γ$ exhibit distinct behaviors at temperatures below and above $T_c$. The widths are very small (approximately few percent of $ω_0$ or even smaller) when $T<T_c$, but grow abruptly when $T>T_c$ and reach values of roughly $Γ\sim ω_0/2$ at $T\approx 1.9T_c$.

Enhanced Logic Performance with Semiconducting Bilayer Graphene Channels

Realization of logic circuits in graphene with an energy gap (EG) remains one of the main challenges for graphene electronics. We found that large transport EGs (>100 meV) can be fulfilled in dual-gated bilayer graphene underneath a simple alumina passivation top gate stack, which directly contacts the graphene channels without an inserted buffer layer. With the presence of EGs, the electrical properties of the graphene transistors are significantly enhanced, as manifested by enhanced on/off current ratio, subthreshold slope and current saturation. For the first time, complementary-like semiconducting logic graphene inverters are demonstrated that show a large improvement over their metallic counterparts. This result may open the way for logic applications of gap-engineered graphene.

More on volume dependence of spectral weight function

Spectral weight functions are easily obtained from two-point correlation functions and they might be used to distinguish single-particle from multi-particle states in a finite-volume lattice calculation, a problem crucial for many lattice QCD simulations. In previous studies, it is shown that the spectral weight function for a broad resonance shares the typical volume dependence of a two-particle scattering state i.e. proportional to $1/L^3$ in a large cubic box of size $L$ while the narrow resonance case requires further investigation. In this paper, a generalized formula is found for the spectral weight function which incorporates both narrow and broad resonance cases. Within Lüscher's formalism, it is shown that the volume dependence of the spectral weight function exhibits a single-particle behavior for a extremely narrow resonance and a two-particle behavior for a broad resonance. The corresponding formulas for both $A^+_1$ and $T^-_1$ channels are derived. The potential application of these formulas in the extraction of resonance parameters are also discussed.

A general study on the volume dependence of spectral weights in lattice field theory

It has been suggested that the volume dependence of the spectral weight could be utilized to distinguish single and multi-particle states in Monte Carlo simulations. In a recent study using a solvable model, the Lee model, we found that this criteria is applicable only for stable particles and narrow resonances, not for the broad resonances. In this paper, the same question is addressed within the finite size formalism outlined by Lüscher. Using a quantum mechanical scattering model, the conclusion that was found in previous Lee model study is recovered. Then, following similar arguments as in Lüscher's, it is argued that the result is valid for a general massive quantum field theory under the same conditions as the Lüscher's formulae. Using the spectral weight function, a possibility of extracting resonance parameters is also pointed out.

Low-energy $D^{*+}D^0_1$ Scattering and the Resonance-like Structure $Z^+(4430)$

Low-energy scattering of $D^*$ and $D_1$ meson are studied using quenched lattice QCD with improved lattice actions on anisotropic lattices. The calculation is performed within Lüscher's finite-size formalism which establishes the relation between the scattering phase in the infinite volume and the exact energy level in the finite volume. The threshold scattering parameters, namely the scattering length $a_0$ and the effective range $r_0$, for the s-wave scattering in $J^P=0^-$ channel are extracted. After the chiral and continuum extrapolations, we obtain: $a_0=2.52(47)$fm and $r_0=0.7(1)$fm where the errors are purely statistical. Based on these results, we discuss the possibility of a shallow bound state for the two charmed mesons within the non-relativistic potential scattering model. It is argued that, albeit the interaction between the two charmed mesons being attractive, it is unlikely that they can form a shallow bound state in this channel. This calculation provides some useful information on the nature of the newly discovered resonance-like structure $Z^+(4430)$ by the Belle Collaboration.

Hadron Scattering in an Asymmetric Box

We propose to study hadron-hadron scattering using lattice QCD in an asymmetric box which allows one to access more non-degenerate low-momentum modes for a given volume. The conventional Lüscher's formula applicable in a symmetric box is modified accordingly. To illustrate the feasibility of this approach, pion-pion elastic scattering phase shifts in the I=2, J=0 channel are calculated within quenched approximation using improved gauge and Wilson fermion actions on anisotropic lattices in an asymmetric box. After the chiral and continuum extrapolation, we find that our quenched results for the scattering phase shifts in this channel are consistent with the experimental data when the three-momentum of the pion is below 300MeV. Agreement is also found when compared with previous theoretical results from lattice and other means. Moreover, with the usage of asymmetric volume, we are able to compute the scattering phases in the low-momentum range (pion three momentum less than about 350MeV in the center of mass frame) for over a dozen values of the pion three-momenta, much more than using the conventional symmetric box with comparable volume.

Massive Domain Wall Fermions on Four-dimensional Anisotropic Lattices

We formulate the massive domain wall fermions on anisotropic lattices. For the massive domain wall fermion, we find that the dispersion relation assumes the usual form in the low momentum region when the bare parameters are properly tuned. The quark self-energy and the quark field renormalization constants are calculated to one-loop in bare lattice perturbation theory. For light domain wall fermions, we verified that the chiral mode is stable against quantum fluctuations on anisotropic lattices. This calculation serves as a guidance for the tuning of the parameters in the quark action in future numerical simulations.

Massive Overlap Fermions on Anisotropic Lattices

We formulate the massive overlap fermions on anisotropic lattices. We find that the dispersion relation for the overlap fermion resembles the continuum form in the low-momentum region once the bare parameters are properly tuned. The quark self-energy and the quark field renormalization constants are calculated to one-loop in bare lattice perturbation theory. We argue that massive domain wall quarks might be helpful in lattice QCD studies on heavy-light hadron spectroscopy.

A Numerical Study of Improved Quark Actions on Anisotropic Lattices

Tadpole improved Wilson quark actions with clover terms on anisotropic lattices are studied numerically. Using asymmetric lattice volumes, the pseudo-scalar meson dispersion relations are measured for 8 lowest lattice momentum modes with quark mass values ranging from the strange to the charm quark with various values of the gauge coupling $β$ and 3 different values of the bare speed of light parameter $ν$. These results can be utilized to extrapolate or interpolate to obtain the optimal value for the bare speed of light parameter $ν_{opt}(m)$ at a given gauge coupling for all bare quark mass values $m$. In particular, the optimal values of $ν$ at the physical strange and charm quark mass are given for various gauge couplings. The lattice action with these optimized parameters can then be used to study physical properties of hadrons involving either light or heavy quarks.

Two Particle States and the $S$-matrix Elements in Multi-channel Scattering

Using a quantum mechanical model, the exact energy eigenstates for two-particle two-channel scattering are studied in a cubic box with periodic boundary conditions in all three directions. A relation between the exact energy eigenvalue in the box and the two-channel $S$-matrix elements in the continuum is obtained. This result can be viewed as a generalization of the well-known Lüscher's formula which establishes a similar relation in elastic scattering.

Liapunov Exponents and the Reversibility of Molecular Dynamics Algorithms

We study the phenomenon of lack of reversibility in molecular dynamics algorithms for the case of Wilson's lattice QCD. We demonstrate that the classical equations of motion that are employed in these algorithms are chaotic in nature. The leading Liapunov exponent is determined in a range of coupling parameters. We give a quantitative estimate of the consequences of the breakdown of reversibility due to round-off errors.

The Higgs Model with a Complex Ghost Pair

A higher derivative term is introduced in the kinetic energy of the Higgs Lagrangian in the minimal Standard Model. A logically consistent and {\it finite} field theory is obtained when some excitations of the Higgs field are quantized with indefinite metric in the Hilbert space. The Landau ghost phenomenon of the conventional triviality problem is replaced by the state vectors of a complex ghost pair at a finite mass scale with observable physical consequences. It is shown that the ghost states exhibit unusual resonance properties and correspond to a complex conjugate pair of Pauli-Villars regulator masses in the euclidean path integral formulation of the theory. An argument is given that microscopic acausality effects associated with the ghost pair remain undetectable in scattering processes with realistic wave packects, and the S-matrix should exhibit unitarity in the observable sector of the Hilbert space.
