Equivariance versus Augmentation for Spherical Images

We analyze the role of rotational equivariance in convolutional neural networks (CNNs) applied to spherical images. We compare the performance of the group equivariant networks known as S2CNNs and standard non-equivariant CNNs trained with an increasing amount of data augmentation. The chosen architectures can be considered baseline references for the respective design paradigms. Our models are trained and evaluated on single or multiple items from the MNIST or FashionMNIST dataset projected onto the sphere. For the task of image classification, which is inherently rotationally invariant, we find that by considerably increasing the amount of data augmentation and the size of the networks, it is possible for the standard CNNs to reach at least the same performance as the equivariant network. In contrast, for the inherently equivariant task of semantic segmentation, the non-equivariant networks are consistently outperformed by the equivariant networks with significantly fewer parameters. We also analyze and compare the inference latency and training times of the different networks, enabling detailed tradeoff considerations between equivariant architectures and data augmentation for practical problems. The equivariant spherical networks used in the experiments are available at https://github.com/JanEGerken/sem_seg_s2cnn .

Real-time semantic segmentation on FPGAs for autonomous vehicles with hls4ml

In this paper, we investigate how field programmable gate arrays can serve as hardware accelerators for real-time semantic segmentation tasks relevant for autonomous driving. Considering compressed versions of the ENet convolutional neural network architecture, we demonstrate a fully-on-chip deployment with a latency of 4.9 ms per image, using less than 30% of the available resources on a Xilinx ZCU102 evaluation board. The latency is reduced to 3 ms per image when increasing the batch size to ten, corresponding to the use case where the autonomous vehicle receives inputs from multiple cameras simultaneously. We show, through aggressive filter reduction and heterogeneous quantization-aware training, and an optimized implementation of convolutional layers, that the power consumption and resource utilization can be significantly reduced while maintaining accuracy on the Cityscapes dataset.

D-instantons and Dualities in String Theory

This introductory part of the author's PhD compilation thesis discusses non-perturbative aspects of string theory, with focus on D-instantons which play key roles in the context of string phenomenology and dualities. By translating ideas from ordinary instanton calculus in field theory, D-instanton calculus is formulated and applied to supersymmetric gauge theories realized as world volume theories of spacefilling D-branes in non-trivial backgrounds. We show that, for configurations in which certain fermionic D-instanton zero modes are either lifted or projected out, new couplings, which may be forbidden at the perturbative level, are generated in the effective action, even though their origin does not admit an obvious interpretation in terms of ordinary field theory. Such couplings are of great relevance for semi-realistic MSSM/GUT models since they can correspond to Yukawa couplings, Majorana mass terms for right-handed neutrinos or Polonyi terms, relevant for supersymmetry breaking. In the last part, we make use of various string dualities in order to compute multi-instanton corrections which are otherwise technically difficult to obtain from explicit D-instanton calculations. We compute one-loop diagrams with BPS particles in type IIA string theory configurations, involving spacefilling D-branes and orientifolds, and obtain exact quantum corrections in the dual type IIB picture, including infinite series of D-instanton contributions. By lifting the one-loop calculations to the M-theory picture, we obtain a geometric understanding of the non-perturbative sector of a wide range of gauge theories and elucidate the underlying symmetries of the effective action.

Multilepton and multiphoton signatures of supersymmetry at the LHC

Motivated by the absence of any clear signal of physics beyond the Standard Model at the LHC after Run I, we discuss one possible slight hint of new physics and one non-minimal extension of the Standard Model. In the first part we provide a tentative explanation of a small excess of multilepton events, observed by the CMS collaboration, by means of a simplified model of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking. In the second part we discuss how the standard phenomenology of gauge mediation can be significantly modified if one makes the non-minimal assumption that supersymmetry is broken in more than one hidden sector. Such multiple hidden sector models involve light neutral fermions called pseudo-goldstini and, due to the extra decay steps they induce, where soft photons are emitted, these models give rise to multiphoton plus missing energy signatures. We discuss why the existing LHC searches are poorly sensitive to these model and we propose new searches designed to probe them.

The 750 GeV diphoton excess from the goldstino superpartner

We interpret the di-photon excess recently reported by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations as a new resonance arising from the sgoldstino scalar, which is the superpartner of the Goldstone mode of spontaneous supersymmetry breaking, the goldstino. The sgoldstino is produced at the LHC via gluon fusion and decays to photons, with interaction strengths proportional to the corresponding gaugino masses over the supersymmetry breaking scale. Fitting the excess, while evading bounds from searches in the di-jet, $Zγ$, $ZZ$ and $WW$ final states, selects the supersymmetry breaking scale to be a few TeV, and particular ranges for the gaugino masses. The two real scalars, corresponding to the CP-even and CP-odd parts of the complex sgoldstino, both have narrow widths, but their masses can be split of the order 10-30 GeV by electroweak mixing corrections, which could account for the preference of a wider resonance width in the current low-statistics data. In the parameter space under consideration, tree-level $F$-term contributions to the Higgs mass arise, in addition to the standard $D$-term contribution proportional to the $Z$-boson mass, which can significantly enhance the tree level Higgs mass.

ATLAS diboson excess from low scale supersymmetry breaking

We provide an interpretation of the recent ATLAS diboson excess in terms of a class of supersymmetric models in which the scale of supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking is in the few TeV range. The particle responsible for the excess is the scalar superpartner of the Goldstone fermion associated with SUSY breaking, the sgoldstino. This scalar couples strongly to the Standard Model vector bosons and weakly to the fermions, with all coupling strengths determined by ratios of soft SUSY breaking parameters over the SUSY breaking scale. Explaining the ATLAS excess selects particular relations and ranges for the gaugino masses, while imposing no constraints on the other superpartner masses. Moreover, this signal hypothesis predicts a rate in the $Zγ$ final state that is expected to be observable at the LHC Run II already with a few fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity.

Light stop squarks and b-tagging

A significant part of the parameter space for light stop squarks still remains unconstrained by collider searches. For both R-Parity Conserving (RPC) and R-Parity Violating (RPV) scenarios there are regions in which the stop mass is around or below the top quark mass that are particularly challenging experimentally. Here we review the status of light stop searches, both in RPC and RPV scenarios. We also propose strategies, generally based on exploiting b-tagging, to cover the unconstrained regions.

Spot the stop with a b-tag

The LHC searches for light compressed stop squarks have resulted in considerable bounds in the case where the stop decays to a neutralino and a charm quark. However, in the case where the stop decays to a neutralino, a bottom quark and two fermions via an off-shell W-boson, there is currently a significant unconstrained region in the stop-neutralino mass plane, still allowing for stop masses in the range 90-140 GeV. In this paper we propose a new monojet-like search for light stops, optimized for the four-body decay mode, in which at least one $b$-tagged jet is required. We show that, already by using the existing 8 TeV LHC data set, such a search would cover the entire unconstrained region. Moreover, in the process of validating our tools against an ATLAS monojet search, we show that the existing limit can be extended to exclude also stop masses below 100 GeV.

Disappearing charged tracks in association with displaced leptons from supersymmetry

In this note we discuss a characteristic collider signature of models of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking in which the selectron and smuon are mass-degenerate co-NLSP. In these models, all processes involving superpartners give rise to two NLSP selectrons or smuons, each of which subsequently decays to a nearly massless LSP gravitino and an electron or a muon. In a large region of the parameter space, the NLSPs travel macroscopic distances, of the order 0.1-1000 mm, before they decay. Hence, these models give rise to collider signatures involving charged tracks that end at vertices, which are inside the detector volume but displaced with respect to the original collision point, from which an electron or a muon is emitted. In order to probe this class of models we propose a search for disappearing charged tracks in association with displaced electrons or muons.

Multilepton signals of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking at the LHC

We investigate multilepton LHC signals arising from electroweak processes involving sleptons. We consider the framework of general gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking, focusing on models where the low mass region of the superpartner spectrum consists of the three generations of charged sleptons and the nearly massless gravitino. We demonstrate how such models can provide an explanation for the anomalous four lepton events recently observed by the CMS collaboration, while satisfying other existing experimental constraints. The best fit to the CMS data is obtained for a selectron/smuon mass of around 145 GeV and a stau mass of around 90 GeV. These models also give rise to final states with more than four leptons, offering alternative channels in which they can be probed and we estimate the corresponding production rates at the LHC.

Multiphoton signatures of goldstini at the LHC

We study models of gauge mediated SUSY breaking with more than one hidden sector. In these models the neutralino sector of the MSSM is supplemented with additional light neutral fermions, the nearly massless gravitino and the massive pseudo-goldstini. For the case where the Bino is the lightest ordinary SUSY particle, its preferred decay is to a photon and the heaviest pseudo-goldstino, which generically cascades down to lighter pseudo-goldstini, or to the gravitino, in association with photons. This gives rise to multiphoton plus missing energy signatures at the LHC. We investigate in detail simplified models where the SUSY spectrum consists of the right-handed sleptons, a Bino-like neutralino, the pseudo-goldstini and the gravitino. We compare against existing LHC searches and show that the sensitivity to our models could be significantly improved by relaxing the kinematic cuts and requiring additional final state particles. We propose inclusive searches in the final state with at least three photons plus missing energy and in the final state with at least two photons plus two leptons plus missing energy, the former being sensitive to any production mode and the latter being optimized for slepton pair production. We show that they could lead to an observation (or strong constraints) already with the data set from LHC Run I, and present prospects for LHC Run II.

Selectron NLSP in Gauge Mediation

We discuss gauge mediation models in which the smuon and the selectron are mass-degenerate co-NLSP, which we, for brevity, refer to as selectron NLSP. In these models, the stau, as well as the other superpartners, are parametrically heavier than the NLSP. We start by taking a bottom-up perspective and investigate the conditions under which selectron NLSP spectra can be realized in the MSSM. We then give a complete characterization of gauge mediation models realizing such spectra at low energies. The splitting between the slepton families is induced radiatively by the usual hierarchies in the Standard Model Yukawa couplings and hence, no new sources of flavour misalignment are introduced. We construct explicit weakly coupled messenger models which give rise to selectron NLSP, while accommodating a 126 GeV MSSM Higgs mass, both within the framework of General Gauge Mediation and in extensions where direct couplings between the messengers and the Higgs fields are present. In the latter class of models, large A-terms and relatively light stops can be achieved. The collider signatures of these models typically involve multilepton final states. We discuss the relevant LHC bounds and provide examples of models where the decay of the NLSP selectron is prompt, displaced or long-lived. The prompt case can be viewed as an ultraviolet completion of a simplified model recently considered by the CMS collaboration.

Collider signatures of low scale supersymmetry breaking: A Snowmass 2013 White Paper

We consider the possibility that supersymmetry is broken at a low scale, within one order of magnitude above the TeV scale. In such a case, the degrees of freedom associated with the spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry, the goldstino fermion and its scalar superpartner (the sgoldstino), can have significant interactions with the Standard Model particles and their superpartners. We discuss some characteristic processes, involving the goldstino and the sgoldstino, and the collider signatures they give rise to. These signatures involve scalar resonances in the di-photon, di-jet, di-boson and di-tau channels, the possible relation between these resonances and deviations in the Higgs couplings as well as exotic Higgs decays in the monophoton+MET and the four photon channels.

Field Theory Interpretation of N=2 Stringy Instantons

We consider stringy instanton contributions to the prepotential of low-energy N=2 theories engineered by D-brane set ups at orbifold and orientifold singularities. We show that such contributions can always be reproduced in a purely field theoretic UV completion. We perform the explicit check up to instanton number three, both for Sp(0) and U(1) stringy instantons, the latter being introduced for the purpose. We further argue that the UV completion that we propose, though weakly coupled, can be smoothly mapped to a gravity-dual inspired UV completion consisting of a cascade of baryonic root transitions.

Higgs decay with monophoton + MET signature from low scale supersymmetry breaking

We study the decay of a standard model-like Higgs boson into a gravitino and a neutralino, which subsequently decays promptly into another gravitino and a photon. Such a decay can be important in scenarios where the supersymmetry breaking scale is of the order of a few TeV, and in the region of low transverse momenta of the photon, it may provide the dominant contribution to the final state with a photon and two gravitinos. We estimate the relevant standard model backgrounds and the prospects for discovering this Higgs decay through a photon and missing transverse energy signal at the LHC in terms of a simplified model. We also give an explicit model with manifest, but spontaneously broken, supersymmetry in which the usual MSSM soft terms are promoted to supersymmetric operators involving a dynamical goldstino supermultiplet. This model can give rise to a SM-like CP-even neutral Higgs particle with a mass of 125 GeV, without requiring substantial radiative corrections, and with couplings sufficiently large for a signal discovery through the above mentioned Higgs decay channel with the upcoming data from the LHC.

Higgs diphoton rate enhancement from supersymmetric physics beyond the MSSM

We show that supersymmetric "new physics" beyond the MSSM can naturally accommodate a Higgs mass near 126 GeV and enhance the signal rate in the Higgs to diphoton channel, while the signal rates in all the other Higgs decay channels coincide with Standard Model expectations, except possibly the Higgs to Z-photon channel. The "new physics" that corrects the relevant Higgs couplings can be captured by two supersymmetric effective operators. We provide a simple example of an underlying model in which these operators are simultaneously generated. The scale of "new physics" that generates these operators can be around 5 TeV or larger, and outside the reach of the LHC.

Liberating Higgs couplings in supersymmetry

In the MSSM, the Higgs couplings to down-type quarks and leptons, normalized with respect to their corresponding Standard Model values, coincide at tree-level and this degeneracy is only slightly broken at the quantum level. Motivated by the latest results of the Higgs searches at the LHC and Tevatron, we explore the possibility of disentangling these couplings from each other by considering a scenario in which supersymmetry is broken spontaneously at a low scale. In such a scenario, all the Higgs couplings, except the ones to the Z and W bosons, receive tree level corrections that depend on the MSSM soft parameters. In particular, the corrections to the Yukawa couplings depend on the A-term soft parameter for the corresponding fermion, allowing for the freedom to break their usual relations, even in the MSSM decoupling limit. We highlight the main features of this scenario in terms of a benchmark point for which the normalized Higgs coupling to the tau leptons is depleted, the coupling to photons is enhanced, while all the other Higgs couplings, including the one to the bottom quarks, are close to their corresponding SM values. We also discuss the experimental bounds arising mainly from di-tau searches and comment on the discovery/exclusion prospects at the LHC.

Low Scale Supersymmetry Breaking and its LHC Signatures

We study the most general extension of the MSSM Lagrangian that includes scenarios in which supersymmetry is spontaneously broken at a low scale f. The spurion that parametrizes supersymmetry breaking in the MSSM is promoted to a dynamical superfield involving the goldstino, with (and without) its scalar superpartner, the sgoldstino. The low energy effective Lagrangian is written as an expansion in terms of m_{SUSY}/sqrt{f}, where m_{SUSY} is the induced supersymmetry breaking scale, and contains, in addition to the usual MSSM Lagrangian with the soft terms, couplings involving the component fields of the goldstino superfield and the MSSM fields. This Lagrangian can provide significant corrections to the usual couplings in the Standard Model and the MSSM. We study how these new corrections affect the Higgs couplings to gauge bosons and fermions, and how LHC bounds can be used in order to constrain f. We also discuss that, from the effective field theory point of view, the couplings of the goldstino interactions are not determined by any symmetry, and their usual simple relation to the soft terms is corrected by higher-dimensional operators.

Photophilic Higgs from sgoldstino mixing

The spontaneous breaking of linearly realized N=1 supersymmetry implies the existence of a pseudo-Goldstone fermion, the goldstino, and of its complex scalar superpartner, the sgoldstino. The latter has generically sizable tree-level couplings to Standard Model gauge bosons while its couplings to SM fermions are suppressed. We consider a light sgoldstino, with a mass around 1 TeV, that mixes with a SM-like Higgs scalar at around 125 GeV. We show that such a mixing can enhance the Higgs to di-photon signal rate while evading all the relevant experimental bounds and without significantly affecting the other decay channels.

The MSSM Higgs Sector with a Dynamical Goldstino Supermultiplet

We consider a supersymmetric realization of the MSSM Higgs sector, where the soft terms are promoted to supersymmetric operators and a minimal weakly coupled hidden sector is included. The model exhibits long-lived meta-stable vacua in which supersymmetry and electroweak symmetry are spontaneously broken. The spectrum contains, in addition to the usual MSSM particles and the goldstino fermion, a CP-even and a CP-odd scalar in the neutral Higgs sector corresponding to the complex sgoldstino scalar. By treating all the components of the goldstino supermultiplet dynamically and taking into account their interactions with the Higgs fields, additional couplings beyond those of the MSSM are induced. When the supersymmetry breaking scale is low, these couplings can raise the masses of all the Higgs particles above the LEP bound, already at tree level and for any value of tan(beta). The model includes a scenario where, for any choice of the supersymmetry breaking scale, the set of parameters is reduced to the standard set (mu, Bmu, tan(beta)) of the MSSM Higgs sector but where novel decays of doublet-like states into sgoldstino-like states are kinematically allowed.

D-instanton and polyinstanton effects from type I' D0-brane loops

We study non-perturbative D(-1)-instanton corrections to quartic gauge and curvature couplings in 8d type IIB orientifolds, in terms of a one-loop computation of BPS D0-branes in T-dual type I' models. The complete perturbative and non-perturbative results are determined by the BPS multiplicities of perturbative open strings and D0-brane bound states in the 9d type I' theory. Its modular properties admit a geometric interpretation by lifting to Horava-Witten theory. We use the type I' viewpoint to motivate a proper interpretation of 8d and 4d polyinstanton effects, consistent with heterotic - type II orientifold duality.

Superpotentials From Stringy Instantons Without Orientifolds

In this paper we show that it is possible to derive non-perturbative superpotential terms from a stringy instanton without introducing orientifold planes. The instanton is realized by a Euclidean D brane wrapping a non-trivial cycle upon which we also wrap a single space-filling D brane. The standard problem of unwanted neutral fermionic zero modes is evaded by the appearance of couplings to charged bosonic zero modes in the instanton moduli action. Since the Euclidean D brane wraps a cycle which is not associated to any low energy gauge dynamics, it can not be interpreted as an ordinary gauge instanton, but rather as a stringy one. By considering such a brane configuration at an orbifold singularity, we can explicitly evaluate the instanton moduli space integral and find a holomorphic superpotential term with the structure of a baryonic mass term.
