Domain walls seeding the electroweak phase transition

Topological defects can act as local impurities that seed cosmological phase transitions. In this paper we study the case of domain walls, and how they can affect the electroweak phase transition in the Standard Model extended with a $Z_2$-odd scalar singlet. When the transition is two-step, the early breaking of the $Z_2$ symmetry implies the formation of domain walls which can then act as nucleation sites for the second step. We develop a method based on dimensional reduction to calculate the rate of the catalyzed phase transition within the 3d theory on the domain wall surface. By comparison with the standard homogeneous rate, we conclude that the seeded phase transition is generically faster and it ultimately determines the way the phase transition is completed. We comment on the phenomenological implications for gravitational waves and baryogenesis.

Probing Early Universe Supercooled Phase Transitions with Gravitational Wave Data

We investigate the reach of the LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA detectors in the search for signatures of first-order phase transitions in the early Universe. Utilising data from the first three observing runs, we derive constraints on the parameters of the underlying gravitational-wave background, focusing on transitions characterised by strong supercooling. As an application of our analysis, we determine bounds on the parameter space of two representative particle physics models. We also comment on the expected reach of third-generation detectors in probing supercooled phase transitions.

Baryogenesis via relativistic bubble expansion

We present a novel baryogenesis mechanism in which the asymmetry is sourced from heavy particles which either gain their mass or are created during bubble expansion in a strong first order phase transition. These particles then decay in a CP and baryon number violating way inside the bubble. The particles are inherently out-of-equilibrium and sufficiently dilute after wall crossing so the third Sakharov condition is easily met. Washout is avoided provided the reheat temperature is sufficiently below the scale of the heavy particles. The mechanism relies on moderate supercooling and relativistic walls which -- in contrast to electroweak baryogenesis -- generically leads to a sizable gravitational wave signal, although in the simplest realisations at frequencies beyond upcoming detectors. We present a simple example model and discuss the restrictions on the parameter space for the mechanism to be successful. We find that high reheat temperatures $T_{\rm RH} \gtrsim 10^{10}$ GeV are generally preferred, whereas stronger supercooling allows for temperatures as low as $T_{\rm RH} \sim 10^{6}$ GeV, provided the vacuum energy density is sufficiently suppressed. We briefly comment on using resonantly enhanced CP violation to achieve even lower scales.

The Muon Smasher's Guide

We lay out a comprehensive physics case for a future high-energy muon collider, exploring a range of collision energies (from 1 to 100 TeV) and luminosities. We highlight the advantages of such a collider over proposed alternatives. We show how one can leverage both the point-like nature of the muons themselves as well as the cloud of electroweak radiation that surrounds the beam to blur the dichotomy between energy and precision in the search for new physics. The physics case is buttressed by a range of studies with applications to electroweak symmetry breaking, dark matter, and the naturalness of the weak scale. Furthermore, we make sharp connections with complementary experiments that are probing new physics effects using electric dipole moments, flavor violation, and gravitational waves. An extensive appendix provides cross section predictions as a function of the center-of-mass energy for many canonical simplified models.

A light dilaton at the LHC

In this paper, we explore the possibility that a light dilaton can be the first sign of new physics at the LHC. The dilaton could emerge in approximate scale invariant UV completions of the SM as the Goldstone boson associated with the spontaneous breaking of the scale invariance. We study in detail the phenomenology of the dilaton at the LHC in the mass range of [$10-300$] GeV including the case where the dilaton can mix with the SM Higgs boson, leading to an interesting interplay between direct and indirect constraints. A possibility that the dilaton acts as a portal to a dark sector is also considered. As a minimal realization, the dark sector includes a dark photon lighter than the dilaton implying sizeable missing energy signatures. Several simplified benchmark models that can encode different UV completions are discussed, for which we scrutinize the current and future LHC reach.

Ripples in Spacetime from Broken Supersymmetry

We initiate the study of gravitational wave (GW) signals from first-order phase transitions in supersymmetry-breaking hidden sectors. Such phase transitions often occur along a pseudo-flat direction universally related to supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking in hidden sectors that spontaneously break $R$-symmetry. The potential along this pseudo-flat direction imbues the phase transition with a number of novel properties, including a nucleation temperature well below the scale of heavy states (such that the temperature dependence is captured by the low-temperature expansion) and significant friction induced by the same heavy states as they pass through bubble walls. In low-energy SUSY-breaking hidden sectors, the frequency of the GW signal arising from such a phase transition is guaranteed to lie within the reach of future interferometers given existing cosmological constraints on the gravitino abundance. Once a mediation scheme is specified, the frequency of the GW peak correlates with the superpartner spectrum. Current bounds on supersymmetry are compatible with GW signals at future interferometers, while the observation of a GW signal from a SUSY-breaking hidden sector would imply superpartners within reach of future colliders.

Searching for long-lived particles beyond the Standard Model at the Large Hadron Collider

Particles beyond the Standard Model (SM) can generically have lifetimes that are long compared to SM particles at the weak scale. When produced at experiments such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, these long-lived particles (LLPs) can decay far from the interaction vertex of the primary proton-proton collision. Such LLP signatures are distinct from those of promptly decaying particles that are targeted by the majority of searches for new physics at the LHC, often requiring customized techniques to identify, for example, significantly displaced decay vertices, tracks with atypical properties, and short track segments. Given their non-standard nature, a comprehensive overview of LLP signatures at the LHC is beneficial to ensure that possible avenues of the discovery of new physics are not overlooked. Here we report on the joint work of a community of theorists and experimentalists with the ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb experiments --- as well as those working on dedicated experiments such as MoEDAL, milliQan, MATHUSLA, CODEX-b, and FASER --- to survey the current state of LLP searches at the LHC, and to chart a path for the development of LLP searches into the future, both in the upcoming Run 3 and at the High-Luminosity LHC. The work is organized around the current and future potential capabilities of LHC experiments to generally discover new LLPs, and takes a signature-based approach to surveying classes of models that give rise to LLPs rather than emphasizing any particular theory motivation. We develop a set of simplified models; assess the coverage of current searches; document known, often unexpected backgrounds; explore the capabilities of proposed detector upgrades; provide recommendations for the presentation of search results; and look towards the newest frontiers, namely high-multiplicity "dark showers", highlighting opportunities for expanding the LHC reach for these signals.

Cornering diphoton resonance models at the LHC

We explore the ability of the high luminosity LHC to test models which can explain the 750 GeV diphoton excess. We focus on a wide class of models where a 750 GeV singlet scalar couples to Standard Model gauge bosons and quarks, as well as dark matter. Including both gluon and photon fusion production mechanisms, we show that LHC searches in channels correlated with the diphoton signal will be able to probe wide classes of diphoton models with $\mathcal{L} \sim 3000\, \text{fb}^{-1}$ of data. Furthermore, models in which the scalar is a portal to the dark sector can be cornered with as little as $\mathcal{L} \sim 30\, \text{fb}^{-1}$.

Di-photon excess illuminates Dark Matter

We propose a simplified model of dark matter with a scalar mediator to accommodate the di-photon excess recently observed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations. Decays of the resonance into dark matter can easily account for a relatively large width of the scalar resonance, while the magnitude of the total width combined with the constraint on dark matter relic density lead to sharp predictions on the parameters of the Dark Sector. Under the assumption of a rather large width, the model predicts a signal consistent with ~300 GeV dark matter particle in channels with large missing energy. This prediction is not yet severely bounded by LHC Run I searches and will be accessible at the LHC Run II in the jet plus missing energy channel with more luminosity. Our analysis also considers astrophysical constraints, pointing out that future direct detection experiments will be sensitive to this scenario.

Signatures of top flavour-changing dark matter

We develop the phenomenology of scenarios in which a dark matter candidate interacts with a top quark through flavour-changing couplings, employing a simplified dark matter model with an s-channel vector-like mediator. We study in detail the top-charm flavour-changing interaction, by investigating the single top plus large missing energy signature at the LHC as well as constraints from the relic density and direct and indirect dark matter detection experiments. We present strategies to distinguish between the top-charm and top-up flavour-changing models by taking advantage of the lepton charge asymmetry as well as by using charm-tagging techniques on an extra jet. We also show the complementarity between the LHC and canonical dark matter experiments in exploring the viable parameter space of the models.

Signs of Tops from Highly Mixed Stops

Supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model with highly mixed squark flavours beyond minimal flavour violation provide interesting scenarios of new physics, which have so far received limited attention. We propose a calculable realization of such scenarios in models of gauge mediation augmented with an extra interaction between the messengers and the up type squark. We compute the supersymmetric spectrum and analyze the flavour physics constraints on such models. In a simplified model approach, we show that scenarios with maximal squark flavour mixing result in interesting phenomenological signatures at the LHC. We show that the model can be probed up to masses of $m_{\tilde{u}} \lesssim 950$ GeV in the single-top event topology at LHC14 with as little as 300 fb$^{-1}$. The most distinctive signature of highly mixed scenarios, the same sign positive charge di-top, can be probed to comparable squark masses at high luminosity LHC14.

Singlet-Doublet Model: Dark matter searches and LHC constraints

The Singlet-Doublet model of dark matter is a minimal extension of the Standard Model with dark matter that is a mixture of a singlet and a non-chiral pair of electroweak doublet fermions. The stability of dark matter is ensured by the typical parity symmetry, and, similar to a "Bino-Higgsino" system, the extra matter content improves gauge coupling unification. We revisit the experimental constraints on the Singlet-Doublet dark matter model, combining the most relevant bounds from direct (spin independent and spin dependent) and indirect searches. We show that such comprehensive analysis sets strong constraints on a large part of the 4-dimensional parameter space, closing the notorious "blind-spots" of spin independent direct searches. Our results emphasise the complementarity of direct and indirect searches in probing dark matter models in diverse mass scale regimes. We also discuss the LHC bounds on such scenario, which play a relevant role in the low mass region of the dark matter candidate.

Z-peaked excess in goldstini scenarios

We study a possible explanation of a 3.0 $σ$ excess recently reported by the ATLAS Collaboration in events with Z-peaked same-flavour opposite-sign lepton pair, jets and large missing transverse momentum in the context of gauge-mediated SUSY breaking with more than one hidden sector, the so-called goldstini scenario. In a certain parameter space, the gluino two-body decay chain $\tilde g\to g\tildeχ^0_{1,2}\to gZ\tilde G'$ becomes dominant, where $\tildeχ^0_{1,2}$ and $\tilde G'$ are the Higgsino-like neutralino and the massive pseudo-goldstino, respectively, and gluino pair production can contribute to the signal. We find that a mass spectrum such as $m_{\tilde g}\sim 1000$ GeV, $m_{\tildeχ^0_{1,2}}\sim 800$ GeV and $m_{\tilde G'}\sim 600$ GeV demonstrates the rate and the distributions of the excess, without conflicting with the stringent constraints from jets plus missing energy analyses and with the CMS constraint on the identical final state.

Anatomy of the Amplituhedron

We initiate a comprehensive investigation of the geometry of the amplituhedron, a recently found geometric object whose volume calculates the integrand of scattering amplitudes in planar N=4 SYM theory. We do so by introducing and studying its stratification, focusing on four-point amplitudes. The new stratification exhibits interesting combinatorial properties and positivity is neatly captured by permutations. As explicit examples, we find all boundaries for the two and three loop amplitudes and related geometries. We recover the stratifications of some of these geometries from the singularities of the corresponding integrands, providing a non-trivial test of the amplituhedron/scattering amplitude correspondence. We finally introduce a deformation of the stratification with remarkably simple topological properties.

Multilepton signals of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking at the LHC

We investigate multilepton LHC signals arising from electroweak processes involving sleptons. We consider the framework of general gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking, focusing on models where the low mass region of the superpartner spectrum consists of the three generations of charged sleptons and the nearly massless gravitino. We demonstrate how such models can provide an explanation for the anomalous four lepton events recently observed by the CMS collaboration, while satisfying other existing experimental constraints. The best fit to the CMS data is obtained for a selectron/smuon mass of around 145 GeV and a stau mass of around 90 GeV. These models also give rise to final states with more than four leptons, offering alternative channels in which they can be probed and we estimate the corresponding production rates at the LHC.

preprint2014arXiv

Multiphoton signatures of goldstini at the LHC

We study models of gauge mediated SUSY breaking with more than one hidden sector. In these models the neutralino sector of the MSSM is supplemented with additional light neutral fermions, the nearly massless gravitino and the massive pseudo-goldstini. For the case where the Bino is the lightest ordinary SUSY particle, its preferred decay is to a photon and the heaviest pseudo-goldstino, which generically cascades down to lighter pseudo-goldstini, or to the gravitino, in association with photons. This gives rise to multiphoton plus missing energy signatures at the LHC. We investigate in detail simplified models where the SUSY spectrum consists of the right-handed sleptons, a Bino-like neutralino, the pseudo-goldstini and the gravitino. We compare against existing LHC searches and show that the sensitivity to our models could be significantly improved by relaxing the kinematic cuts and requiring additional final state particles. We propose inclusive searches in the final state with at least three photons plus missing energy and in the final state with at least two photons plus two leptons plus missing energy, the former being sensitive to any production mode and the latter being optimized for slepton pair production. We show that they could lead to an observation (or strong constraints) already with the data set from LHC Run I, and present prospects for LHC Run II.

Novel Higgs Potentials from Gauge Mediation of Exact Scale Breaking

We present a gauge mediation principle for BSM theories where exact UV scale invariance is broken in a hidden sector. The relevant configurations are those in which the Standard Model and a hidden sector emanate from a scale invariant pair of UV theories that communicate only via gauge interactions. We compute the radiatively induced Higgs potential which contains logarithmic mass-squared terms that lead to unusual Higgs self-couplings. Its other couplings are unchanged.

Selectron NLSP in Gauge Mediation

We discuss gauge mediation models in which the smuon and the selectron are mass-degenerate co-NLSP, which we, for brevity, refer to as selectron NLSP. In these models, the stau, as well as the other superpartners, are parametrically heavier than the NLSP. We start by taking a bottom-up perspective and investigate the conditions under which selectron NLSP spectra can be realized in the MSSM. We then give a complete characterization of gauge mediation models realizing such spectra at low energies. The splitting between the slepton families is induced radiatively by the usual hierarchies in the Standard Model Yukawa couplings and hence, no new sources of flavour misalignment are introduced. We construct explicit weakly coupled messenger models which give rise to selectron NLSP, while accommodating a 126 GeV MSSM Higgs mass, both within the framework of General Gauge Mediation and in extensions where direct couplings between the messengers and the Higgs fields are present. In the latter class of models, large A-terms and relatively light stops can be achieved. The collider signatures of these models typically involve multilepton final states. We discuss the relevant LHC bounds and provide examples of models where the decay of the NLSP selectron is prompt, displaced or long-lived. The prompt case can be viewed as an ultraviolet completion of a simplified model recently considered by the CMS collaboration.

A Zig-Zag Index

We study the large N superconformal index of quiver gauge theories describing the worldvolume of D3 branes probing toric Calabi Yau singularities. The index has been previously noticed to factorize over the set of the extremal BPS mesonic operators of the gauge theory. We review this factorization and reformulate it in terms of zig-zag paths in the dimer model associated to the quiver. By using this reformulation, we argue that the factorization is valid not only for the exact R charge but for every set of R_{trial} respecting the marginality constraints. Moreover, we show the factorization of the index also in theories with orbifold singularities, previously not investigated. We conclude by providing an expression for the index in terms of the toric data of the dual geometry.

Phenomenology of General Gauge Mediation in light of a 125 GeV Higgs

We explore the phenomenology of the full General Gauge Mediation parameter space in the MSSM focusing on the consequences of having a fundamental Higgs around 125 GeV. Assuming GUT-complete structure of the hidden sector, we allow for deviations from the strict definition of gauge mediated SUSY-breaking coming from mild violations of messenger-parity and from extra couplings between the Higgs multiplets and the hidden sector. Relaxing the GUT assumption, our parameter space is defined by the property of having vanishing A-terms at the messenger scale. In this extended setup we focus on the possibility of splitting the SU(3) mass parameters of GGM. In all these scenarios we investigate the possible spectra, discussing to what extent having an Higgs mass around 125 GeV is constraining the GGM parameter space and what are the possible signatures at LHC.

The Geometry of On-Shell Diagrams

The fundamental role of on-shell diagrams in quantum field theory has been recently recognized. On-shell diagrams, or equivalently bipartite graphs, provide a natural bridge connecting gauge theory to powerful mathematical structures such as the Grassmannian. We perform a detailed investigation of the combinatorial and geometric objects associated to these graphs. We mainly focus on their relation to polytopes and toric geometry, the Grassmannian and its stratification. Our work extends the current understanding of these connections along several important fronts, most notably eliminating restrictions imposed by planarity, positivity, reducibility and edge removability. We illustrate our ideas with several explicit examples and introduce concrete methods that considerably simplify computations. We consider it highly likely that the structures unveiled in this article will arise in the on-shell study of scattering amplitudes beyond the planar limit. Our results can be conversely regarded as an expansion in the understanding of the Grassmannian in terms of bipartite graphs.

BPS states and their reductions

We develop a method to identify the BPS states in the Hilbert space of a supersymmetric field theory on a generic curved space which preserves at least two real supercharges. We also propose a one-to-one map between BPS states in d-dimensional field theories and states that contribute to the supersymmetric partition function of a corresponding (d-1)-dimensional field theory. As an application we obtain the superconformal index on rounded and squashed three spheres, and we show a natural reduction of the respective indices to the three-dimensional exact partition functions. We discuss the validity of the correspondence both at the perturbative and at the non-perturbative level and exploit the idea to uplift the computation of the exact supersymmetric partition function on a general manifold to a higher dimensional index.

Collider signatures of goldstini in gauge mediation

We investigate the collider signatures of the multiple goldstini scenario in the framework of gauge mediation. This class of models is characterized by a visible sector (e.g. the MSSM or any extension) coupled by gauge interactions to more than one SUSY breaking sector. The spectrum consists of a light gravitino LSP, behaving as a goldstino, and a number of neutral fermions (the pseudo-goldstini) with a mass between that of the LSP and that of the lightest particle of the observable sector (LOSP). We consider the two situations where the LOSP is either a gaugino-like neutralino or a stau and we assume only one pseudo-goldstino of a mass of O(100) GeV. The coupling of the LOSP to the pseudo-goldstino can be enhanced with respect to those of the gravitino giving rise to characteristic signatures. We show that the decay modes of the LOSP into a SM particle and a pseudo-goldstino can be significant. For both LOSP scenarios we analyze (pseudo)-goldstini production at colliders. Compared to standard gauge mediation the final state spectrum is softer and more structured.

Field Theory Interpretation of N=2 Stringy Instantons

We consider stringy instanton contributions to the prepotential of low-energy N=2 theories engineered by D-brane set ups at orbifold and orientifold singularities. We show that such contributions can always be reproduced in a purely field theoretic UV completion. We perform the explicit check up to instanton number three, both for Sp(0) and U(1) stringy instantons, the latter being introduced for the purpose. We further argue that the UV completion that we propose, though weakly coupled, can be smoothly mapped to a gravity-dual inspired UV completion consisting of a cascade of baryonic root transitions.

Negative Refraction and Superconductivity

We discuss exotic properties of charged hydrodynamical systems, in the broken superconducting phase, probed by electromagnetic waves. Motivated by general arguments from hydrodynamics, we observe that negative refraction, namely the propagation in opposite directions of the phase velocities and of the energy flux, is expected for low enough frequencies. We corroborate this general idea by analyzing a holographic superconductor in the AdS/CFT correspondence, where the response functions can be explicitly computed. We study the dual gravitational theory both in the probe and in the backreacted case. We find that, while in the first case the refractive index is positive at every frequency, in the second case there is negative refraction at low enough frequencies. This is in agreement with hydrodynamic considerations.

Negative Refractive Index in Hydrodynamical Systems

We discuss the presence of exotic electromagnetic phenomena in systems with finite charge density which are described by hydrodynamics. We show that such systems generically have negative refractive index for low frequency electromagnetic waves, i.e. the energy flux and the phase velocity of the wave propagate in opposite directions. We comment on possible phenomenological applications, focusing on the Quark Gluon Plasma.

Pseudo-Goldstini in Field Theory

We consider two SUSY-breaking hidden sectors which decouple when their respective couplings to the visible particles are switched off. In such a scenario one expects to find two light fermions: the Goldstino and the pseudo-Goldstino. While the former remains massless in the rigid limit, the latter becomes massive due to radiative effects which we analyze from several different points of view. This analysis is greatly facilitated by a version of the Goldberger-Treiman relation, which allows us to write a universal non-perturbative formula for the mass. We carry out the analysis in detail in the context of gauge mediation, where we find that the pseudo-Goldstino mass is at least around the GeV scale and can be easily at the electroweak range, even in low scale models. This leads to interesting and unconventional possibilities in collider physics and it also has potential applications in cosmology.

Patterns of Soft Masses from General Semi-Direct Gauge Mediation

We give a general formulation of semi-direct gauge mediation of supersymmetry breaking where the messengers interact with the hidden sector only through a weakly gauged group. Using this general formulation, we provide an explicit proof that the MSSM gaugino masses are vanishing to leading order in the gauge couplings. On the other hand, the MSSM sfermion masses have, generically, a non-vanishing leading contribution. We discuss how such a mechanism can successfully be combined with other mediation schemes which give tachyonic sfermions, such as sequestered anomaly mediation and some direct gauge mediation models.

Unscreening the Gaugino Mass with Chiral Messengers

Gaugino screening, the absence of next-to-leading order corrections to gaugino masses, is a generic feature of gauge mediation models of supersymmetry breaking. We show that in a specific class of models, known as semi-direct gauge mediation, it is possible to avoid gaugino screening by allowing for a chiral messenger sector. Messengers then acquire a mass at some scale, for instance by higgsing or by some auxiliary strong coupling dynamics. We implement this idea in a simple model which we work out explicitly.

3D Seiberg-like Dualities and M2 Branes

We investigate features of duality in three dimensional N=2 Chern-Simons matter theories conjectured to describe M2 branes at toric Calabi Yau four-fold singularities. For 3D theories with non-chiral 4D parents we propone a Seiberg-like duality which turns out to be a toric duality. For theories with chiral 4D parents we discuss the conditions under which that Seiberg-like duality leads to toric duality. We comment on such duality in 3D theories without 4D parents.

Natural semi-direct gauge mediation and D-branes at singularities

We consider semi-direct gauge mediation models of supersymmetry breaking where the messengers are composite fields and their supersymmetric mass is naturally generated through quartic superpotential couplings. We show that such composite messenger models can be easily embedded in quiver gauge theories arising from D-branes at Calabi-Yau singularities, and argue that semi-direct gauge mediation is in fact a very natural option for supersymmetry breaking in D-brane models. We provide several explicit examples and discuss their salient phenomenological properties.

Pseudomoduli Dark Matter and Quiver Gauge Theories

We investigate supersymmetric models for dark matter which is represented by pseudomoduli in weakly coupled hidden sectors. We propose a scheme to add a dark matter sector to quiver gauge theories with metastable supersymmetry breaking. We discuss the embedding of such scheme in string theory and we describe the dark matter sector in terms of D7 flavour branes. We explore the phenomenology in various regions of the parameters.
