Characterization of mini-CryoCube detectors from the Ricochet experiment commissioning at the Institut Laue-Langevin

The Ricochet experiment aims to measure the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering process from antineutrinos emitted by a research nuclear reactor operated by the Institut Laue-Langevin (Grenoble, France). This article presents a description of the Ricochet experimental installation and the detector performance achieved during its commissioning with a mini-CryoCube module consisting of three 42-gram germanium cryogenic calorimeters. The baseline resolutions and background levels are reported both during reactor-on and reactor-off periods, and as noise mitigation techniques were improved. A baseline resolution of 40 eV electron equivalent was achieved for the ionization channel after setup improvements, and the phonon channel resolutions ranged from 50 to 80 eV of total phonon energy. In the energy region from 2 to 7 keV, a nuclear recoil rate of 15(2) events/(kg day keV) is measured during the reactor-off period selecting events in coincidence with muon veto signals. This rate is in agreement with the cosmogenic neutron rate calculated from GEANT4 simulations. After the rejection of events in coincidence with signals in the muon veto detectors, a combined 90% C.L. limit on the nuclear recoil background of < 9 events/(kg day keV) is obtained in that energy region during the reactor-on period, which is compatible with our GEANT4 model calculation corresponding to a total rate of 5 events/(kg day keV). The sensitivity of this analysis was however found to be limited by a surface event contamination which is currently being addressed by the Ricochet Collaboration with upgraded detectors.

Dynamic properties of high-Tc superconducting nano-junctions made with a focused helium ion beam

The Josephson junction (JJ) is the corner stone of superconducting electronics and quantum information processing. While the technology for fabricating low $T_{c}$ JJ is mature and delivers quantum circuits able to reach the "quantum supremacy", the fabrication of reproducible and low-noise high-$T_{c}$ JJ is still a challenge to be taken up. Here we report on noise properties at RF frequencies of recently introduced high-$T_{c}$ Josephson nano-junctions fabricated by mean of a Helium ion beam focused at sub-nanometer scale on a $\mathrm{YBa}_2\mathrm{Cu}_3\mathrm{O}_7$ thin film. We show that their current-voltage characteristics follow the standard Resistively-Shunted-Junction (RSJ) circuit model, and that their characteristic frequency $f_{c}=(2e/h)I_{c}R_{n}$ reaches $\sim 300$ GHz at low temperature. Using the "detector response" method, we evidence that the Josephson oscillation linewidth is only limited by the thermal noise in the RSJ model for temperature ranging from $T\sim 20$ K to $75$ K. At lower temperature and for the highest He irradiation dose, the shot noise contribution must also be taken into account when approaching the tunneling regime. We conclude that these Josephson nano-junctions present the lowest noise level possible, which makes them very promising for future applications in the microwave and terahertz regimes.

Josephson mixers for terahertz detection

We report on an experimental and theoretical study of the high-frequency mixing properties of ion-irradiated YBa2Cu3O7 Josephson junctions embedded in THz antennas. We investigated the influence of the local oscillator power and frequency on the device performances. The experimental data are compared with theoretical predictions of the general three-port model for mixers, in which the junction is described by the resistively shunted junction model. A good agreement is obtained for the conversion efficiency in different frequency ranges, spanning above and below the characteristic frequencies fc of the junctions.

Three-dimensional emission from organic Fabry-Perot microlasers

We measured the far-field emission patterns in three dimensions of flat organic dye microlasers using a solid angle scanner. Polymer-based microcavities of ribbon shape (i.e., Fabry-Perot type) were investigated. Out of plane emission from the cavities was observed, with significant differences for the two cases of resonators either fully supported by the substrate or sustained by a pedestal. In both cases, the emission diagrams are accounted for by a model combining diffraction at the cavity edges and reflections from the substrate.

Identification and selection rules of the spin-wave eigen-modes in a normally magnetized nano-pillar

We report on a spectroscopic study of the spin-wave eigen-modes inside an individual normally magnetized two layers circular nano-pillar (Permalloy$|$Copper$|$Permalloy) by means of a Magnetic Resonance Force Microscope (MRFM). We demonstrate that the observed spin-wave spectrum critically depends on the method of excitation. While the spatially uniform radio-frequency (RF) magnetic field excites only the axially symmetric modes having azimuthal index $\ell=0$, the RF current flowing through the nano-pillar, creating a circular RF Oersted field, excites only the modes having azimuthal index $\ell=+1$. Breaking the axial symmetry of the nano-pillar, either by tilting the bias magnetic field or by making the pillar shape elliptical, mixes different $\ell$-index symmetries, which can be excited simultaneously by the RF current. Experimental spectra are compared to theoretical prediction using both analytical and numerical calculations. An analysis of the influence of the static and dynamic dipolar coupling between the nano-pillar magnetic layers on the mode spectrum is performed.
