A Stringy Effect on Hawking Radiation

In string theories, interactions are exponentially suppressed for trans-Planckian space-like external momenta. We study a class of quantum field theories that exhibit this feature modeled after Witten's bosonic open string field theory, and discover a Lorentz-invariant UV/IR relation that leads to the spacetime uncertainty principle proposed by Yoneya. Application to a dynamical black hole background suggests that Hawking radiation is turned off around the scrambling time.

Hawking Radiation Under Generalized Uncertainty Principle

The generalized uncertainty relation is expected to be an essential element in a theory of quantum gravity. In this work, we examine its effect on the Hawking radiation of a Schwarzschild black hole formed from collapse by incorporating a minimal uncertainty length scale into the radial coordinate of the background. This is implemented in both the ingoing Vaidya coordinates and a family of freely falling coordinates. We find that, regardless of the choice of the coordinate system, Hawking radiation is turned off at around the scrambling time. Interestingly, this phenomenon occurs while the Hawking temperature remains largely unmodified.

Stringy Spacetime Uncertainty Principle and a Modified Trans-Planckian Censorship Criterion

We study the implications of the stringy space-time uncertainty relation (STUR) for inflationary cosmology. By demanding that no fluctuation modes that exit the Hubble radius are affected by the nonlocality resulting from the STUR, we find an upper bound on the number of e-foldings of inflation. The bound is a factor of 2 weaker than what results from the Trans-Planckian Censorship Criterion (TCC). By demanding that the inflationary phase is simultaneously consistent with STUR and sufficiently long for inflation to provide a causal explanation of structure on the scale of the current Hubble radius, we find an upper bound on the energy scale of inflation. The bound is less restrictive than what follows from the TCC, but it remains in conflict with canonical single-field inflation models.

UV Dispersive Effects on Hawking Radiation

We revisit the connection between Hawking radiation and high-frequency dispersions for a Schwarzschild black hole following the work of Brout et al.. After confirming the robustness of Hawking radiation for monotonic dispersion relations, we consider non-monotonic dispersion relations that deviate from the standard relation only in the trans-Planckian domain. Contrary to the common belief that Hawking radiation is insensitive to UV physics, it turns out that Hawking radiation is subject to significant modifications after the scrambling time. Depending on the UV physics at the singularity, the amplitude of Hawking radiation could diminish after the scrambling time, while the Hawking temperature remains the same. Our finding is thus not contradictory to earlier works regarding the robustness of Hawking temperature.

Planckian Physics Comes Into Play At Planckian Distance From Horizon

In the background of a gravitational collapse, we compute the transition amplitudes for the creation of particles for distant observers due to higher-derivative interactions in addition to Hawking radiation. The amplitudes grow exponentially with time and become of order 1 when the collapsing matter is about a Planck length outside the horizon. As a result, the effective theory breaks down at the scrambling time, invalidating its prediction of Hawking radiation. Planckian physics comes into play to decide the fate of black-hole evaporation.

An Analytic Description of Semi-Classical Black-Hole Geometry

We study analytically the spacetime geometry of the black-hole formation and evaporation. As a simplest model of the collapse, we consider a spherical thin shell, and take the back-reaction from the negative energy of the quantum vacuum state. For definiteness, we will focus on quantum effects of s-waves. We obtain an analytic solution of the semi-classical Einstein equation for this model, that provides an overall description of the black hole geometry form the formation to evaporation. As an application of this result, we find its interesting implication that, after the collapsing shell enters the apparent horizon, the proper distance between the shell and the horizon remains as small as the Planck length even when the difference in their areal radii is of the same order as the Schwarzschild radius. The position of the shell would be regarded as the same place to the apparent horizon in the semi-classical regime of gravity.

Asymptotic States of Black Holes in KMY Model

Following the work of Kawai, Matsuo, and Yokokura, we study the dynamical collapsing process with spherical symmetry in the time-dependent space-time background including the back reaction of Hawking radiation. We show that in this model there are two classes of asymptotic solutions. One of the two classes is known previously. These states have the slope $\partial a/\partial r$ approximately equal to 1. The other class of asymptotic solutions is that of shells with a small thickness. We emphasize that these thin shells should be properly understood as configurations in the low-energy effective theory. They behave characteristically differently from the singular states of ideal thin shells of zero thickness.

Generalized Yang-Mills Theory and Gravity

We propose a generalization of Yang-Mills theory for which the symmetry algebra does not have to be factorized as mutually commuting algebras of a finite-dimensional Lie algebra and the algebra of functions on base space. The algebra of diffeomorphism can be constructed as an example, and a class of gravity theories can be interpreted as generalized Yang-Mills theories. These theories in general include a graviton, a dilaton and a rank-2 antisymmetric field, although Einstein gravity is also included as a special case. We present calculations suggesting that the connection in scattering amplitudes between Yang-Mills theory and gravity via BCJ duality can be made more manifest in this formulation.

The Absence of Horizon in Black-Hole Formation

With the back-reaction of Hawking radiation taken into consideration, the work of Kawai, Matsuo and Yokokura has shown that, under a few assumptions, the collapse of matter does not lead to event horizon nor apparent horizon. In this paper, we relax their assumptions and elaborate on the space-time geometry of a generic collapsing body with spherical symmetry. The geometry outside the collapsing sphere is found to be approximated by the geometry outside the white-hole horizon, hence the collapsing matter remains outside the Schwarzschild radius. As particles in Hawking radiation are created in the vicinity of the collapsing matter, the information loss paradox is alleviated. Assuming that the collapsing body evaporates within finite time, there is no event horizon.

Comment on Self-Consistent Model of Black Hole Formation and Evaporation

In an earlier work, Kawai et al proposed a model of black-hole formation and evaporation, in which the geometry of a collapsing shell of null dust is studied, including consistently the back reaction of its Hawking radiation. In this note, we illuminate the implications of their work, focusing on the resolution of the information loss paradox and the problem of the firewall.

Geometry of Area Without Length

To define a free string by the Nambu-Goto action, all we need is the notion of area, and mathematically the area can be defined directly in the absence of a metric. Motivated by the possibility that string theory admits backgrounds where the notion of length is not well defined but a definition of area is given, we study space-time geometries based on the generalization of metric to area metric. In analogy with Riemannian geometry, we define the analogues of connections, curvatures and Einstein tensor. We propose a formulation generalizing Einstein's theory that will be useful if at a certain stage or a certain scale the metric is ill-defined and the space-time is better characterized by the notion of area. Static spherical solutions are found for the generalized Einstein equation in vacuum, including the Schwarzschild solution as a special case.

Aspects of Effective Theory for Multiple M5-Branes Compactified On Circle

A supersymmetric non-Abelian self-dual gauge theory with the explicit introduction of Kaluza-Klein modes is proposed to give a classical description of multiple M5-branes on $R^5 \times S^1$. The gauge symmetry is parametrized by Lie-algebra valued 1-forms with the redundancy of a 0-form, and the supersymmetry transformations without gauge-fixing are given. We study BPS configurations involving KK modes, including M-waves and M2-branes with non-trivial distributions around the circle. Finally, this supersymmetric gauge theory of two-forms can be equipped with more general non-Abelian gerbes in five dimensions.

S-Duality for D3-Brane in NS-NS and R-R Backgrounds

We construct the low-energy effective field theory for a D3-brane in constant R-R 2-form potential background as the S-dual theory of a D3-brane in NS-NS B-field background. Despite the non-Abelian algebra of the noncommutative U(1) gauge symmetry, the electromagnetic duality transformation can be carried out to all orders, and the dual Lagrangian is given in a compact form. The gauge algebra is found to be a mixture of a deformed area-preserving diffeomorphism and the usual U(1) gauge symmetry.

Effective Action for Dp-Brane in Large RR (p-1)-Form Background

We construct the low energy effective action for the bosonic sector on a Dp-brane in large constant RR (p-1)-form field background. The action is invariant under both U(1) gauge symmetry and the volume-preserving diffeomorphism characterizing the RR-field background. Scalar fields representing transverse coordinates of the Dp-brane are included. It also respects T-duality and is consistent with the action for M5-brane in C-field background.

Partition Function of Chiral Boson on 2-Torus from Floreanini-Jackiw Lagrangian

We revisit the problem of quantizing a chiral boson on a torus. The conventional approach is to extract the partition function of a chiral boson from the path integral of a non-chiral boson. Instead we compute it directly from the chiral boson Lagrangian of Floreanini and Jackiw modified by topological terms involving auxiliary fields. A careful analysis of the gauge-fixing condition for the extra gauge symmetry reproduces the correct results for the free chiral boson, and has the advantage of being applicable to a wider class of interacting chiral boson theories.

BPS States on M5-brane in Large C-field Background

We extensively study BPS solutions of the low energy effective theory of M5-brane in large C-field background. This provides us an opportunity to explore the interactions turned on by C-field background through the Nambu-Poisson structure. The BPS states considered in this paper include the M-waves, the self-dual string (M2 ending on M5), tilted M5-brane, holomorphic embedding of M5-brane and the intersection of two M5-branes along a 3-brane.

Note on non-Abelian two-form gauge fields

Motivated by application to multiple M5 branes, we study some properties of non-Abelian two-form gauge theories. We note that the fake curvature condition which is commonly used in the literature would restrict the dynamics to be either a free theory or a topological system. We then propose a modification of transformation law which simplifies the gauge transformation of 3-form field strength and enables us to write down a gauge invariant action. We then argue that a generalization of Stueckelberg mechanism naturally gives mass to the two-form gauge field. For the application to multiple M5-branes, it should be identified with the KK modes.

A Non-Abelian Self-Dual Gauge Theory in 5+1 Dimensions

We construct a non-Abelian gauge theory of chiral 2-forms (self-dual gauge fields) in 6 dimensions with a spatial direction compactified on a circle of radius R. It has the following two properties. (1) It reduces to the Yang-Mills theory in 5 dimensions for small R. (2) It is equivalent to the Lorentz-invariant theory of Abelian chiral 2-forms when the gauge group is Abelian. Previous no-go theorems prohibiting non-Abelian deformations of the chiral 2-form gauge theory are circumvented by introducing nonlocality along the compactified dimension.

D-brane in R-R Field Background

The purpose of this paper is to understand the low energy effective theory of a Dp-brane in the background of a large constant R-R (p-1)-form field. We start with the M5-brane theory in large C-field background. The C-field background defines a 3-dimensional volume form on an M5-brane, and it is known that the low energy M5-brane theory can be described as a Nambu-Poisson gauge theory with the volume-preserving diffeomorphism symmetry (VPD). Via a double dimensional reduction we obtain a D4-brane in R-R 3-form field background. This theory has both the usual U(1) gauge symmetry and the new symmetry of VPD. We find that the gauge potential for VPD is electric-magnetic dual to the U(1) gauge potential, sharing the same physical degrees of freedom. The result can be generalized to Dp-branes.

A No-Go Theorem for M5-brane Theory

The BLG model for multiple M2-branes motivates an M5-brane theory with a novel gauge symmetry defined by the Nambu-Poisson structure. This Nambu-Poisson gauge symmetry for an M5-brane in large C-field background can be matched, on double dimension reduction, with the Poisson limit of the noncommutative gauge symmetry for a D4-brane in B-field background. Naively, one expects that there should exist a certain deformation of the Nambu-Poisson structure to match with the full noncommutative gauge symmetry including higher order terms. However, We prove the no-go theorem that there is no way to deform the Nambu-Poisson gauge symmetry, even without assuming the existence of a deformation of Nambu-Poisson bracket, to match with the noncommutative gauge symmetry in 4+1 dimensions to all order, regardless of how the double dimension reduction is implemented.

Lagrangian Formulations of Self-dual Gauge Theories in Diverse Dimensions

In this work, we study Lagrangian formulations for self-dual gauge theories, also known as chiral $n$-form gauge theories, for $n = 2p$ in $D = 4p+2$ dimensional spacetime. Motivated by a recent formulation of M5-branes derived from the BLG model, we generalize the earlier Lagrangian formulation based on a decomposition of spacetime into $(D-1)$ dimensions plus a special dimension, to construct Lagrangian formulations based on a generic decomposition of spacetime into $D'$ and $D" = D - D'$ dimensions. Although the Lorentz symmetry is not manifest, we prove that the action is invariant under modified Lorentz transformations.

More on the Nambu-Poisson M5-brane Theory: Scaling limit, background independence and an all order solution to the Seiberg-Witten map

We continue our investigation on the Nambu-Poisson description of M5-brane in a large constant C-field background (NP M5-brane theory) constructed in Refs.[1, 2]. In this paper, the low energy limit where the NP M5-brane theory is applicable is clarified. The background independence of the NP M5-brane theory is made manifest using the variables in the BLG model of multiple M2-branes. An all order solution to the Seiberg-Witten map is also constructed.

A UV completion of scalar field theory in arbitrary even dimensions

Following a previous work (hep-th/0410248), where a scalar field theory with a modified propagator and phi^4 interaction in 4 dimensions is constructed to be UV-finite, unitary and Lorentz invariant, we discuss in this paper general phi^n theory in arbitrary even space-time dimensions. We show that the theory is still UV-finite, unitary and Lorentz invariant if the propagators are chosen to meet certain simple conditions depending on the space-time dimension but independent of n. We also comment that our model is reminiscent of string theory in the way UV divergence is avoided.

Time-dependent AdS/CFT Duality and Null Singularity

We consider AdS/CFT correspondence for time-dependent \II B backgrounds in this paper. The supergravity solutions we construct are supersymmetric pp-waves on AdS and may have null singularity in the bulk. The dual gauge theory is also constructed explicitly and is given by a time-dependent supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory living on the boundary. Apart from the usual terms that are dictated by the geometry, our gauge theory action features also a time-dependent axion coupling and a time-dependent gauge coupling. Both of which are necessary due to the presence of a nontrivial dilaton and axion profile in the supergravity solution. The proposal is supported by a precise matching in the symmetries and functional dependence on the null coordinate of the two theories. As applications, we show how the bulk Einstein equation may be reproduced from the gauge theory. We also study and compare the behaviour of the field theory two-point functions. We find that the two-point function computed by using duality is different from that by doing a direct field theory computation. In particular the spacetime singularity is not seen in our gauge theory result, suggesting that the spacetime singularity may be resolved in the gauge theory.

Comments on the high energy limit of bosonic open string theory

In previous works, ratios among four-point scattering amplitudes at the leading order in the high-energy limit were derived for the bosonic open string theory. The derivation was based on Ward identities derived from the decoupling of zero-norm states and was purely algebraic. The only assumption of the derivation was that the momentum polarization can be approximated by the longitudinal polarization at high energies. In this paper, using the decoupling of spurious states, we reduce this assumption to a much weaker one which can be easily verified by simple power counting in most cases. For the special cases which are less obvious, we verify the new assumption for an example by saddle-point approximation. We also provide a new perspective to our previous results in terms of DDF states. In particular, we show that, by using DDF states, one can easily see that there is only one independent high energy scattering amplitude for each fixed mass level.

Solving all 4-point correlation functions for bosonic open string theory in the high energy limit

We study the implication of decoupling zero-norm states in the high-energy limit, for the 26 dimensional bosonic open string theory. Infinitely many linear relations among 4-point functions are derived algebraically, and their unique solution is found. Equivalent results are also obtained by taking the high-energy limit of Virasoro constraints, and as an independent check, we compute all 4-point functions of 3 tachyons and an arbitrary massive state by saddle-point approximation.

Hyperbolic Space Cosmologies

We present a systematic study of accelerating cosmologies obtained from M/string theory compactifications of hyperbolic spaces with time-varying volume. A set of vacuum solutions where the internal space is a product of hyperbolic manifolds is found to give qualitatively the same accelerating four-dimensional FLRW universe behavior as a single hyperbolic space. We also examine the possibility that our universe is a hyperbolic space and provide exact Milne type solutions, as well as intersecting S-brane solutions. When both the usual 4D spacetime and the m-dimensional internal space are hyperbolic, we find eternally accelerating cosmologies for $m\geq 7$, with and without form field backgrounds. In particular, the effective potential for a magnetic field background in the large 3 dimensions is positive definite with a local minimum and thus enhances the eternally accelerating expansion.

Virasoro Algebra for Particles with Higher Derivative Interactions

In this paper we show that the worldline reparametrization for particles with higher derivative interactions appears as a higher dimensional symmetry, which is generated by the truncated Virasoro algebra. We also argue that for generic nonlocal particle theories the fields on the worldline may be promoted to those living on a two dimensional worldsheet, and the reparametrization symmetry becomes locally the same as the conformal symmetry.

Noncommutative D-brane and Open String in pp-wave Background with B-field

The open string ending on a D-brane with a constant B-field in a pp-wave Ramond-Ramond background is exactly solvable. The theory is controlled by three dimensionful parameters: alpha', the mass parameter (RR background times the lightcone momentum) and the B-field. We quantize the open string theory and determine the full noncommutative structure. In particular, we find a fully noncommutative phase space whose noncommutativity depends on all these parameters. The lightcone Hamiltionian is obtained, and as a consequence of the nontrivial commutation relations of the theory, new features of the spectrum are noted. Various scaling limits of the string results are considered. Physical implications are discussed.

Noncommutative Quantum Mechanics from Noncommutative Quantum Field Theory

We derive noncommutative multi-particle quantum mechanics from noncommutative quantum field theory in the nonrelativistic limit. Paricles of opposite charges are found to have opposite noncommutativity. As a result, there is no noncommutative correction to the hydrogen atom spectrum at the tree level. We also comment on the obstacles to take noncommutative phenomenology seriously, and propose a way to construct noncommutative SU(5) grand unified theory.

Worldvolume Uncertainty Relations for D-Branes

By quantizing an open string ending on a D-brane in a nontrivial supergravity background, we argue that there is a new kind of uncertainty relation on a D-brane worldvolume. Furthermore, we fix the form of the uncertainty relations and their dependence on the string coupling constant by requiring them to be consistent with various string theory and M theory dualities. In this way we find a web of uncertainties of spacetime for all kinds of brane probes, including fundamental strings, D-branes of all dimensions as well as M theory membranes and fivebranes.

Matrix Compactification On Orientifolds

Generalizing previous results for orbifolds, in this paper we describe the compactification of Matrix model on an orientifold which is a quotient space as a Yang-Mills theory living on a quantum space. The information of the compactification is encoded in the action of the discrete symmetry group G on Euclidean space and a projective representation U of G. The choice of Hilbert space on which the algebra of U is realized as an operator algebra corresponds to the choice of a physical background for the compactification. All these data are summarized in the spectral triple of the quantum space.

Noncommutative Gauge Theories in Matrix Theory

We present a general framework for Matrix theory compactified on a quotient space R^n/G, with G a discrete group of Euclidean motions in R^n. The general solution to the quotient conditions gives a gauge theory on a noncommutative space. We characterize the resulting noncommutative gauge theory in terms of the twisted group algebra of G associated with a projective regular representation. Also we show how to extend our treatments to incorporate orientifolds.

Towards a Noncommutative Geometric Approach to Matrix Compactification

In this paper we study generic M(atrix) theory compactifications that are specified by a set of quotient conditions. A procedure is proposed, which both associates an algebra to each compactification and leads deductively to general solutions for the matrix variables. The notion of noncommutative geometry on the dual space is central to this construction. As examples we apply this procedure to various orbifolds and orientifolds, including ALE spaces and quotients of tori. While the old solutions are derived in a uniform way, new solutions are obtained in several cases. Our study also leads to a new formulation of gauge theory on quantum spaces.

Twisted Bundle On Quantum Torus and BPS States in Matrix Theory

Following the recent work of Connes, Douglas and Schwarz, we study the M(atrix) model compactified on a torus with a background of the three-form field. This model is given by a super Yang-Mills theory on a quantum torus. To consider twisted gauge field configurations, we construct twisted U(n) bundles on the quantum torus as a deformation of its classical counterpart. By properly taking into account membranes winding around the light-cone direction, we derive from the M(atrix) model the BPS spectrum which respects the full SL(2,Z)*SL(2,Z) U-duality in M theory.

Non-Abelian Anomalies and Effective Actions for a Homogeneous Space $G/H$

We consider the problem of constructing the fully gauged effective action in $2n$-dimensional space-time for Nambu-Goldstone bosons valued in a homogeneous space $G/H$, with the requirement that the action be a solution of the anomalous Ward identity and be invariant under the gauge transformations of $H$. We show that this can be done whenever the homotopy group $π_{2n}(G/H)$ is trivial, $G/H$ is reductive and $H$ is embedded in $G$ so as to be anomaly free, in particular if $H$ is an anomaly safe group. We construct the necessary generalization of the Bardeen counterterm and give explicit forms for the anomaly and the effective action. When $G/H$ is a symmetric space the counterterm and the anomaly decompose into a parity even and a parity odd part. In this case, for the parity even part of the action, one does not need the anomaly free embedding of $H$.

Noncommutative Geometry and D-Branes

We apply noncommutative geometry to a system of N parallel D-branes, which is interpreted as a quantum space. The Dirac operator defining the quantum differential calculus is identified to be the supercharge for strings connecting D-branes. As a result of the calculus, Connes' Yang-Mills action functional on the quantum space reproduces the dimensionally reduced U(N) super Yang-Mills action as the low energy effective action for D-brane dynamics. Several features that may look ad hoc in a noncommutative geometric construction are shown to have very natural physical or geometric origin in the D-brane picture in superstring theory.
