Charm Quark Kinetics in Heavy Ion Collisions

We study the evolution of charm $(c)$ quarks in hot QCD matter with $N_f=2+1(+1)$ quark flavors by analyzing the charm production rate and the time dependence of their abundance. Microscopically, the system is described within a quasiparticle model, in which interactions among dynamical quarks and gluons are encoded in their effective masses with the running coupling constrained by lattice QCD data. We investigate $c$-quark kinetics in a longitudinally propagating perfect fluid as well as in a viscous medium undergoing (2+1)D expansion, and find that the charm production rate decreases monotonically across all medium formulations. In the $N_f=2+1+1$ scenario, charm production is systematically suppressed due to the effective mass of heavy quasiparticles. Assuming an initial charm yield given by the Statistical Hadronization Model, we solve the rate equation and compute the total charm abundance in hot QCD medium. For all descriptions considered, the charm quark number remains approximately conserved, consistent with existing experimental evidence.

Chiral symmetry restoration and the $Δ$ matter formation in neutron stars

We analyze the effects of chiral symmetry restoration in hadronic matter, including the lowest-lying baryonic resonance $Δ$ based on the parity doublet model. We study the role of $Δ$ and its chiral partner on the equation of state (EoS) of dense matter under neutron star (NS) conditions of $β$-equilibrium and charge neutrality. We find that the softening of the EoS driven by the early onset of $Δ$ matter due to partial restoration of chiral symmetry allows accommodating the modern multi-messenger astrophysical constraints on the mass, radius, and tidal deformability. The softening above the saturation density is accompanied by subsequent stiffening at high densities. We also find that the matter composition in the NS cores may be different upon variations of the repulsive interactions of $Δ$ baryons in hadronic matter.

Conformality and percolation threshold in neutron stars

Speed of sound is given attention in multi-messenger astronomy as it encodes information of the dense matter equation of state. Recently the trace anomaly was proposed as a more informative quantity. In this work, we statistically determine the speed of sound and trace anomaly and show that they are driven to their conformal values at the centers of maximally massive neutron stars. We show that the local peak in the speed of sound can be associated with deconfinement along with percolation conditions in QCD matter.

Reconciling multi-messenger constraints with chiral symmetry restoration

We analyze the recent astrophysical constraints in the context of a hadronic equation of state (EoS), in which the baryonic matter is subject to chiral symmetry restoration. We show that with such EoS it is possible to reconcile the modern constraints on the neutron star (NS) mass, radius, and tidal deformability (TD). We find that the softening of the EoS, required by the TD constraint of a canonical $1.4~M_\odot$ NS, followed by a subsequent stiffening, required by the $2~M_\odot$ constraint, is driven by the appearance of $Δ$ matter due to partial restoration of chiral symmetry. Consequently, a purely hadronic EoS that accounts for the fundamental properties of quantum chromodynamics linked to the dynamical emergence of parity doubling with degenerate masses of nucleons and $Δ$ resonances can be fully consistent with multi-messenger data. Therefore, with the present constraints on the EoS, the conclusion about the existence of the quark matter in the stellar core may still be premature.

Reconciling Multi-messenger Constraints with Chiral Symmetry Restoration

We consider the parity doublet model for nucleonic and delta matter to investigate the structure of neutron stars. We show that it is possible to reconcile the multi-messenger astronomy constraints within a purely hadronic equation of state (EOS), which accounts for the self-consistent treatment of the chiral symmetry restoration in the baryonic sector. We demonstrate that the characteristics of the EOS required by the astrophysical constraints do not necessarily imply the existence of a hadron-quark phase transition in the stellar core.

Deconfinement in the presence of a strong magnetic field

We study the impact of a finite magnetic field on the deconfinement phase transition for heavy quarks by computing the fluctuations of the Polyakov loops. It is demonstrated that the explicit Z(3) breaking field increases with the magnetic field, leading to a decrease in the (pseudo) critical temperatures and a shrinking first-order region in the phase diagram. Phenomenological equations that capture the behaviors of the Z(3) breaking field at strong and weak magnetic fields for massive and massless quarks are given. Lastly, we explore the case of dynamical light quarks and demonstrate how an improved constituent quark mass function can enforce the correct magnetic field dependence of the deconfinement temperature in an effective model, as observed in Lattice QCD calculations.

Impact of quark quasiparticles on transport coefficients in hot QCD

We study the bulk and shear viscosity and the electrical conductivity in a quasiparticle approach to Yang-Mills theory and QCD with light and strange quarks to assess the dynamical role of quarks in transport properties at finite temperature. The interactions with a hot medium are embodied in effective masses of the constituents through a temperature-dependent running coupling extracted from the lattice QCD thermodynamics. In Yang-Mills theory, the bulk viscosity to entropy density ratio exhibits a non-monotonous structure around the phase transition temperature. In QCD, this is totally dissolved because of a substantial contribution from quark quasiparticles. The bulk to shear viscosity ratio near the phase transition behaves consistently to the scaling with the speed of sound derived in the AdS/CFT approach, whereas at high temperature it obeys the same parametric dependence as in perturbation theory. Thus, the employed quasiparticle model is adequate to capture the transport properties in the weak and strong coupling regimes of the theory. This feature is not altered by including dynamical quarks which, however, retards the system from restoring conformal invariance. We also examine the individual flavor contributions to the electrical conductivity and show that the obtained behavior agrees qualitatively well with the recent results of lattice simulations and with a class of phenomenological approaches.

Net-proton number fluctuations in the presence of the QCD critical point

Event-by-event fluctuations of the net-proton number studied in heavy-ion collisions provide an important means in the search for the conjectured critical end point (CP) in the QCD phase diagram. We propose a phenomenological model in which the fluctuations of the chiral critical mode couple to protons and anti-protons. This allows us to study the behavior of the net-proton number fluctuations in the presence of the CP. Calculating the net-proton number cumulants, $C_n$ with n=1,2,3,4, along the phenomenological freeze-out line we show that the ratio of variance and mean $C_2/C_1$, as well as kurtosis $C_4/C_2$ resemble qualitative properties observed in data in heavy-ion collisions as a function of beam energy obtained by the STAR Collaboration at RHIC. In particular, the non-monotonic structure of the kurtosis and smooth change of the $C_2/C_1$ ratio with beam energy could be due to the CP located near the freeze-out line. The skewness, however, exhibits properties that are in contrast to the criticality expected due to the CP. The dependence of our results on the model parameters and the proximity of the chemical freeze-out to the critical point are also discussed.

An effective model for the QCD phase transitions at finite baryon density

We introduce an effective quark-meson-nucleon model for the QCD phase transitions at finite baryon density. The nucleon and the quark degrees of freedom are described within a unified framework of a chiral linear sigma model. The deconfinement transition is modeled through a simple modification of the distribution functions of nucleons and quarks, where an additional auxiliary field, the bag field, is introduced. The bag field plays a key role in converting between the nucleon and the quark degrees of freedom. The model predicts that the chiral and the deconfinement phase transitions are always separated. Depending on the model parameters, the chiral transition occurs in the baryon density range of $(1.5-15.5)n_0$, while the deconfinement transition occurs above $5 n_0$, where $n_0$ is the saturation density.

Chiral Thermodynamics with Charm

Chiral thermodynamics of charmed mesons is formulated at finite temperature within a $2+1+1$-flavored effective Lagrangian incorporating heavy quark symmetry. The chiral mass splittings are shown to be less sensitive to the light-quark flavors, attributed to the underlying heavy quark symmetry. Consequently, chiral symmetry restoration is more accelerated in the strange charmed-mesons than in the strange light mesons, and this is in striking contrast to the chiral SU(4) result. We also show the correlations between light and heavy flavors around the chiral crossover.

preprint2015arXiv

Correlations between light and heavy flavors near the chiral crossover

Thermal fluctuations and correlations between the light and heavy-light mesons are explored within a chiral effective theory implementing heavy quark symmetry. We show, that various heavy-light flavor correlations indicate a remnant of the chiral criticality in a narrow range of temperature where the chiral susceptibility exhibits a peak structure. The onset of the chiral crossover, in the heavy-light flavor correlations, is therefore independent from the light flavors. This indicates that the fluctuations carried by strange charmed mesons can also be used to identify the chiral crossover, which is dominated by the non-strange light quark dynamics.

Dirac spectrum representation of Polyakov loop fluctuations in lattice QCD

Dirac spectrum representations of the Polyakov loop fluctuations are derived on the temporally odd-number lattice, where the temporal length is odd with the periodic boundary condition. We investigate the Polyakov loop fluctuations based on these analytical relations. It is semianalytically and numerically found that the low-lying Dirac eigenmodes have little contribution to the Polyakov loop fluctuations, which are sensitive probe for the quark deconfinement. Our results suggest no direct one-to-one corresponding between quark confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD.

Matching the Hagedorn mass spectrum with Lattice QCD results

Based on recent Lattice QCD (LQCD) results obtained at finite temperature, we discuss modeling of the hadronic phase of QCD in the framework of Hadron Resonance Gas (HRG) with discrete and continuous mass spectra. We focus on fluctuations of conserved charges, and show how a common limiting temperature can be used to constrain the Hagedorn exponential mass spectrum in different sectors of quantum number, through a matching of HRG and LQCD. For strange baryons, the extracted spectra are found to be consistent with all known and expected states listed by the Particle Data Group (PDG). The strange-mesonic sector, however, requires additional states in the intermediate mass range beyond that embodied in the database.

Polyakov loop fluctuations in Dirac eigenmode expansion

We investigate correlations of the Polyakov loop fluctuations with eigenmodes of the lattice Dirac operator. Their analytic relations are derived on the temporally odd-number size lattice with the normal non-twisted periodic boundary condition for the link-variables. We find that the low-lying Dirac modes yield negligible contributions to the Polyakov loop fluctuations. This property is confirmed to be valid in confined and deconfined phase by numerical simulations in SU(3) quenched QCD. These results indicate that there is no direct, one-to-one correspondence between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD in the context of different properties of the Polyakov loop fluctuation ratios.

Strangeness fluctuations from $K-π$ interactions

Motivated by recent lattice QCD studies, we explore the effects of interactions on strangeness fluctuations in strongly interacting matter at finite temperature. We focus on S-wave $Kπ$ scattering and discuss the role of the $K_0^*(800)$ and $K^*(1430)$ resonances. The interaction contribution is obtained within the S-matrix formulation of thermodynamics, using the empirical $Kπ$ phase shifts as input. We find that the simplified treatment of the interactions in this channel, employed in the hadron resonance gas approach, leads to an overestimate of the strangeness fluctuations. Thus, our calculation indicates that broad resonances must be treated with caution, when modeling QCD thermodynamics in the hadronic phase.

preprint2014arXiv

Fate of charmed mesons near chiral symmetry restoration in hot matter

Chiral thermodynamics of charmed mesons is formulated at finite temperature within a $2+1+1$-flavored effective Lagrangian incorporating heavy quark symmetry. The charmed-meson mean fields act as an extra source which breaks the chiral symmetry explicitly. This leads to effective interactions between the light and heavy-light mesons, which intrinsically depend on temperature. Effective masses of the scalar and pseudoscalar charmed-mesons tend to approach each other as increasing temperature, so that the splitting between the chiral partners is reduced. These chiral splittings are shown to be less sensitive to the light-quark flavors, attributed to the underlying heavy quark symmetry. Consequently, chiral symmetry restoration is more manifest for the strange charmed-mesons than for the strange light mesons. The effective masses are also compared with the results in the one-loop chiral perturbation theory. A substantial difference is found at a relatively low temperature, $T \sim f_π$.

Selected Issues in Thermal Field Theory

New developments on hot and dense QCD in effective field theories are reviewed. Recent investigations in lattice gauge theories for the low-lying Dirac eigenmodes suggest survival hadrons in restored phase of chiral symmetry. We discuss expected properties of those bound states in a medium using chiral approaches. The role of higher-lying hadrons near chiral symmetry restoration is also argued from the conventional and the holographic point of view.

Effective gluon potential and Yang-Mills thermodynamics

We derive the Polyakov-loop thermodynamic potential in the perturbative approach to pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory. The potential expressed in terms of the Polyakov loop in the fundamental representation corresponds to that of the strong-coupling expansion, of which the relevant coefficients of the gluon energy distribution are specified by characters of the SU(3) group. At high temperature, the potential exhibits the correct asymptotic behavior, whereas at low temperature, it disfavors gluons as appropriate dynamical degrees of freedom. To quantify the Yang-Mills thermodynamics in confined phase, we introduce a hybrid approach which matches the effective gluon potential to that of glueballs, constrained by the QCD trace anomaly in terms of dilaton fields.

Implementation of chromomagnetic gluons in Yang-Mills thermodynamics

Motivated by the recent high-precision lattice data on Yang-Mills equations of state, we propose an effective theory of SU(3) gluonic matter. The theory is constructed based on the center and scale symmetries and their dynamical breaking, so that the interplay between color-electric and color-magnetic gluons is included coherently. We suggest, that the magnetic gluon condensate changes its thermal behavior qualitatively above the critical temperature, as a consequence of the matching to dimensionally-reduced magnetic theories. We consider thermodynamics in the mean field approximation and discuss the properties and interpretation of the trace anomaly.

Interplay between chromoelectric and chromomagnetic gluons in Yang-Mills thermodynamics

We propose an effective theory of SU(3) gluonic matter where interactions between color-electric and color-magnetic gluons are constrained by the center and scale symmetries. Through matching to the dimensionally-reduced magnetic theories, the magnetic gluon condensate qualitatively changes its thermal behavior above the critical temperature. We argue its phenomenological consequences for the thermodynamics, in particular the dynamical breaking of scale invariance.

Interplay between ω-Nucleon Interaction and Nucleon Mass in Dense Baryonic Matter

The dilaton-limit fixed point and the scaling properties of hadrons in the close vicinity of the fixed point in dense baryonic matter uncovered in hidden local symmetry implemented with spontaneously broken scale symmetry are shown to reveal a surprisingly intricate interplay, hitherto unsuspected, between the origin of the bulk of proton mass and the renormalization-group flow of the ω-nuclear interactions. This rends a theoretical support to the previous (phenomenologically) observed correlation between the dropping nucleon mass and the behavior of the ω-nuclear interactions in dense matter described in terms of half skyrmions that appear at a density denoted $n_{1/2}$ in skyrmion crystals. The role of the ω-meson degree of freedom in the source for nucleon mass observed in this paper is highly reminiscent of its important role in the skyrmion description of nucleon mass in hidden local symmetric theory. One of the most notable novel results found in this paper is that the nucleon mass in dense baryonic medium undergoes a drop roughly linear in density up to a density (denoted $\tilde{n}$) slightly above nuclear matter density ($n_0$) and then stays more or less constant up to the dilaton limit fixed point. The possibility that we entertain is that $\tilde{n}$ coincides with or at least close to $n_{1/2}$. We note that this feature can be economically captured by the parity-doublet model for nucleons with the chiral-invariant mass $m_0\sim (0.7-0.8) m_N$. It is found in one-loop renormalization-group analysis with the Lagrangian adopted that while the ρ-NN coupling "runs" in density, the ω-NN coupling does not scale: it will scale at two-loop or higher-loop order, but at a slower pace, so it is more appropriate to say it "walks" rather than runs.

Polyakov loop fluctuations in SU(3) lattice gauge theory and an effective gluon potential

We calculate the Polyakov loop susceptibilities in the SU(3) lattice gauge theory using the Symanzik improved gauge action on different-sized lattices. The longitudinal and transverse fluctu- ations of the Polyakov loop, as well as, that of its absolute value are considered. We analyze their properties in relation to the confinement-deconfinement phase transition. We also present results based on simulations of (2+1)-flavor QCD on 32^3 x 8 lattice using Highly Improved Staggered Quark (HISQ) action by the HotQCD collaboration. The influences of fermions on the Polyakov loop fluctuations are discussed. We show, that ratios of different susceptibilities of the Polyakov loop are sensitive probes for critical behavior. We formulate an effective model for the Polyakov loop potential and constrain its parameters from existing quenched lattice data including fluctuations. We emphasize the role of fluctuations to fully explore the thermodynamics of pure gauge theory within an effective approach.

Probing Deconfinement with Polyakov Loop Susceptibilities

The susceptibilities of the real and imaginary parts, as well as of the modulus of the Polyakov loop, are computed in SU(3) lattice gauge theory. We show that the ratios of these susceptibilities are excellent probes of the deconfinement transition, independent of the renormalization of the Polyakov loop and only weakly dependent on the system size. The ratios are almost temperature independent above and below the transition and exhibit a discontinuity at the transition temperature. This characteristic behavior can be understood in terms of the global Z(3) symmetry of the Yang-Mills Lagrangian and the general properties of the Polyakov loop probability distribution.

Yang-Mills Thermodynamics: an Effective Theory Approach

We derive the Polyakov-loop thermodynamic potential in the perturbative approach to pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory. The potential expressed in terms of the Polyakov loop in the fundamental representation corresponds to that of the strong-coupling expansion, of which the relevant coefficients of the gluon energy distribution are specified by characters of the SU(3) group. At high temperatures the derived gluon potential exhibits the correct asymptotic behavior, whereas at low temperatures, it disfavors gluons as appropriate dynamical degrees of freedom. In order to quantify the Yang-Mills thermodynamics in a confined phase, we propose a hybrid approach which matches the effective gluon potential to the one of glueballs constrained by the QCD trace anomaly in terms of a dilaton. We also discuss the interplay between the chromomagnetic and chromoelectric gluon dynamics.

preprint2012arXiv

An effective gluon potential and hybrid approach to Yang-Mills thermodynamics

We derive the partition function for the SU(3) Yang-Mills theory in the presence of a uniform gluon field within the background field method. We show, that the $n$-body gluon contributions in the partition function are characterized solely by the Polyakov loop. We express the effective action through characters of different representations of the color gauge group resulting in a form deduced in the strong-coupling expansion. A striking feature of this potential is that at low temperature gluons are physically disfavored and therefore they do not yield the correct thermodynamics. We suggest a hybrid approach to Yang-Mills thermodynamics, combining the effective gluon potential with glueballs implemented as dilaton fields.

Dilaton-Limit Fixed Point in Hidden Local Symmetric Parity Doublet Model

We study nucleon structure with positive and negative parities using a parity doublet model endowed with hidden local symmetry (HLS) with the objective to probe dense baryonic matter. The model -- that we shall refer to as "PDHLS model" for short -- allows a chiral-invariant mass of the nucleons unconnected to spontaneously broken chiral symmetry which comes out to be m_0 ~ 200 MeV at tree level from fitting to the decay width of the parity doubler, N(1535), to nucleon-pion and nucleon axial coupling g_A=1.267. The presence of a substantial m_0 that remains non-vanishing at chiral restoration presents a deep issue for the origin of the nucleon mass as well as will affect nontrivially the equation of state for dense baryonic matter relevant for compact stars. We construct a chiral perturbation theory at one-loop order and explore the phase structure of the model using renormalization group equations. We find a fixed point that corresponds exactly to the "dilaton limit" at which the HLS vector mesons decouple from the nucleons before reaching the vector manifestation fixed point. We suggest that cold baryonic system will flow to this limit as density increases toward that of chiral restoration.

Suppression of the repulsive force in nuclear interactions near the chiral phase transition

We introduce an effective chiral Lagrangian with a dilaton responsible for the trace anomaly in QCD. As the "dilaton limit" is taken, which drives a system to near chiral restoration density, a linear sigma model emerges from the highly non-linear structure. A striking prediction is that the vector-meson--nucleon interaction gets strongly suppressed when the dilaton limit is approached. Its phenomenological implications for the thermodynamics of dense baryonic matter are briefly discussed.

Chiral Symmetry Breaking, Trace Anomaly and Baryons in Hot and Dense Matter

We propose an effective chiral Lagrangian with a chiral scalar introduced as a dilaton associated with broken conformal symmetry and responsible for the trace anomaly in QCD and discuss the properties of hadronic matter at high density and temperature. As the "dilaton limit" is taken, which drives a system from nuclear matter density to near chiral restoration density, a linear sigma model emerges from the highly non-linear structure. A striking prediction is that as the dilaton limit is approached, the omega-nucleon interaction gets strongly suppressed at high density. This is shown to be a firm statement at the quantum level protected by an infrared fixed point of the renormalization group equations derived in chiral perturbation theory.

preprint2011arXiv

Conformal anomaly and the vector coupling in dense matter

We construct an effective chiral Lagrangian for hadrons implemented by the conformal invariance and discuss the properties of nuclear matter at high density. The model is formulated based on two alternative assignment, "naive" and mirror, of chirality to the nucleons. It is shown that taking the dilaton limit, in which the mended symmetry of Weinberg is manifest, the vector-meson Yukawa coupling becomes suppressed and the symmetry energy becomes softer as one approaches the chiral phase transition. This leads to softer equations of state (EoS) and could accommodate the EoS without any exotica consistent with the recent measurement of a $1.97 \pm 0.04\,M_\odot$ neutron star.

The phase structure of a chiral model with dilatons in hot and dense matter

We explore the phase structure of a chiral model of constituent quarks and gluons implementing scale symmetry breaking at finite temperature and chemical potential. In this model the chiral dynamics is intimately linked to the trace anomaly saturated by a dilaton field. The thermodynamics is governed by two condensates, thermal expectation values of sigma and dilaton fields, which are the order parameters responsible for the phase transitions associated with the chiral and scale symmetries. Within the mean field approximation, we find that increasing temperature a system experiences a chiral phase transition and then a first-order phase transition of partial scale symmetry restoration characterized by a melting gluon-condensate takes place at a higher temperature. There exists a region at finite chemical potential where the scale symmetry remains dynamically broken while the chiral symmetry is restored. We also give a brief discussion on the sigma-meson mass constrained from Lattice QCD.

Effect of vector--axial-vector mixing to dilepton spectrum

In this write-up we summarize main results of our recent analyses on the mixing between transverse rho and a1 mesons in hot and/or dense matter. We show that the axial-vector meson contributes significantly to the vector spectral function in hot matter through the mixing. In dense baryonic matter, we include a mixing through a set of omega rho a1 -type interactions. We show that a clear enhancement of the vector spectral function appears below \sqrt{s}=m_ρfor small three-momenta of the rho meson, and thus the vector spectrum exhibits broadening.

Thermodynamics of dense hadronic matter in a parity doublet model

We study thermodynamics of nuclear matter in a two-flavored parity doublet model within the mean field approximation. Parameters of the model are chosen to reproduce correctly the properties of the nuclear ground state. The model predicts two phase transitions in nuclear matter, a liquid-gas phase transition at normal nuclear density and a chiral transition at higher density. At finite temperature the pion decay constant exhibits a considerable reduction at intermediate values of chemical potential, which is traced back to the presence of the liquid-gas transition, and approaches zero at higher chemical potential associated with the chiral symmetry restoration. A "transition" from meson-rich to baryon-rich matter is also discussed.

Thermodynamics of dense matter in chiral approaches

We discuss phases in dense hadronic and quark matter from chiral model approaches. Within PNJL models the phase diagram for various number of colors $N_c$ is studied. How phases are constrained in quantum field theories are also discussed along with the anomaly matching. An exotic phase with unbroken center symmetry of chiral group has a characteristic feature in the thermodynamics, which can be interpreted as one realization of the quarkyonic phase in QCD for $N_c=3$.

Vector mesons at finite temperature and QCD sum rules

Finite energy sum rules for vector and axial-vector currents are derived in a thermal medium to provide constraints for the spectral behavior of rho and a1 mesons at nonvanishing temperature and hence to study the tendency toward chiral symmetry restoration. The parity-mixing ansatz for the rho and a1 spectra, including finite widths, is investigated as a function of temperature. Characteristic differences between vector and axial-vector channels are discussed with regard to the implementation of the chiral-symmetry-breaking scale, 4pi times the pion decay constant, in the sum rule approach.

Novel spectral broadening from vector--axial-vector mixing in dense matter

In this write-up we summarize main result of our recent analysis on the mixing between transverse $ρ$ and $a_1$ mesons through a set of $ωρa_1$-type interactions in dense baryonic matter. In the analysis, we showed that a clear enhancement of the vector spectral function appears below $\sqrt{s}=m_ρ$ for small three-momenta of the $ρ$ meson, and thus the vector spectrum exhibits broadening.

The Phase Structure of Dense QCD from Chiral Models

A new phase of dense QCD proposed in the limit of large number of colors, Quarkyonic Phase, is discussed in chiral approaches. The interplay between chiral symmetry breaking and confinement together with the $N_c$ dependence of the phase diagram are dealt with in the PNJL model. We also discuss a possible phase at finite density where chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken while its center remains unbroken. The quark number susceptibility exhibits a strong enhancement at the restoration point of the center symmetry rather than that of the chiral symmetry. This is reminiscent of the quarkyonic transition.

The Pion Velocity at Chiral Restoration and the Vector Manifestation

We study the effects of Lorentz non-invariance on the physical pion velocity at the critical temperature $T_c$ in an effective theory of hidden local symmetry (HLS) with the "vector manifestation" fixed point. We match at a "matching scale" $Λ_M$ the axial-vector current correlator in the HLS with the one in the operator product expansion for QCD, and present the matching condition to determine the bare pion velocity. We find that the physical pion velocity, which is found to be one at $T=T_c$ when starting from the Lorentz invariant bare HLS, remains close to one with the Lorentz non-invariance, $v_π(T_c) = 0.83 - 0.99$. This result is quite similar to the pion velocity in dense matter.
