Charm Quark Kinetics in Heavy Ion Collisions

We study the evolution of charm $(c)$ quarks in hot QCD matter with $N_f=2+1(+1)$ quark flavors by analyzing the charm production rate and the time dependence of their abundance. Microscopically, the system is described within a quasiparticle model, in which interactions among dynamical quarks and gluons are encoded in their effective masses with the running coupling constrained by lattice QCD data. We investigate $c$-quark kinetics in a longitudinally propagating perfect fluid as well as in a viscous medium undergoing (2+1)D expansion, and find that the charm production rate decreases monotonically across all medium formulations. In the $N_f=2+1+1$ scenario, charm production is systematically suppressed due to the effective mass of heavy quasiparticles. Assuming an initial charm yield given by the Statistical Hadronization Model, we solve the rate equation and compute the total charm abundance in hot QCD medium. For all descriptions considered, the charm quark number remains approximately conserved, consistent with existing experimental evidence.

Chiral symmetry restoration and the $Δ$ matter formation in neutron stars

We analyze the effects of chiral symmetry restoration in hadronic matter, including the lowest-lying baryonic resonance $Δ$ based on the parity doublet model. We study the role of $Δ$ and its chiral partner on the equation of state (EoS) of dense matter under neutron star (NS) conditions of $β$-equilibrium and charge neutrality. We find that the softening of the EoS driven by the early onset of $Δ$ matter due to partial restoration of chiral symmetry allows accommodating the modern multi-messenger astrophysical constraints on the mass, radius, and tidal deformability. The softening above the saturation density is accompanied by subsequent stiffening at high densities. We also find that the matter composition in the NS cores may be different upon variations of the repulsive interactions of $Δ$ baryons in hadronic matter.

Conformality and percolation threshold in neutron stars

Speed of sound is given attention in multi-messenger astronomy as it encodes information of the dense matter equation of state. Recently the trace anomaly was proposed as a more informative quantity. In this work, we statistically determine the speed of sound and trace anomaly and show that they are driven to their conformal values at the centers of maximally massive neutron stars. We show that the local peak in the speed of sound can be associated with deconfinement along with percolation conditions in QCD matter.

Exact strangeness conservation in heavy ion collisions

We investigate the increase in strangeness production with charged particle multiplicity ($dN_{ch}/dy$) seen by the ALICE collaboration at CERN in p-p, p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions using the hadron resonance gas model. The strangeness canonical ensemble is used taking into account the interactions among hadrons using S-matrix corrections based on known phase shift analyses. We show the essential role of constraints due to the exact conservation of strangeness which is instrumental to describing observed features of strange particle yields and their scaling with $dN_{ch}/dy$. Furthermore, the results on comparing the hadron resonance gas model with and without S-matrix corrections, are presented. We observe that the interactions introduced by the phase shift analysis via the S-matrix formalism are essential for a better description of the yields data independent of collision system. This work is based on our long-lasting collaboration and most recent publications with Jean Cleymans.

Fluctuations in the canonical ensemble of an Abelian charge

We study fluctuations in the canonical ensemble, where the net baryon number is exactly conserved. The focus is on cumulants and factorial cumulants linked to the baryon and antibaryon multiplicities and their sum or difference in full phase-space as well as in subsystems. In particular, we connect the fluctuations of the net baryon number in a subsystem, relevant for fluctuation studies in nucleus-nucleus collisions, with fluctuations of the baryon and antibaryon numbers of the total system. We derive analytic expressions for factorial cumulants of arbitrary order. Compact results are obtained in terms of cumulants of the baryon number of the total system. Moreover, we derive the asymptotic forms of the factorial cumulants of baryon and antibaryon multiplicities in the high- and low-temperature limits and discuss the results in the context of heavy-ion collision experiments.

Reconciling multi-messenger constraints with chiral symmetry restoration

We analyze the recent astrophysical constraints in the context of a hadronic equation of state (EoS), in which the baryonic matter is subject to chiral symmetry restoration. We show that with such EoS it is possible to reconcile the modern constraints on the neutron star (NS) mass, radius, and tidal deformability (TD). We find that the softening of the EoS, required by the TD constraint of a canonical $1.4~M_\odot$ NS, followed by a subsequent stiffening, required by the $2~M_\odot$ constraint, is driven by the appearance of $Δ$ matter due to partial restoration of chiral symmetry. Consequently, a purely hadronic EoS that accounts for the fundamental properties of quantum chromodynamics linked to the dynamical emergence of parity doubling with degenerate masses of nucleons and $Δ$ resonances can be fully consistent with multi-messenger data. Therefore, with the present constraints on the EoS, the conclusion about the existence of the quark matter in the stellar core may still be premature.

Reconciling Multi-messenger Constraints with Chiral Symmetry Restoration

We consider the parity doublet model for nucleonic and delta matter to investigate the structure of neutron stars. We show that it is possible to reconcile the multi-messenger astronomy constraints within a purely hadronic equation of state (EOS), which accounts for the self-consistent treatment of the chiral symmetry restoration in the baryonic sector. We demonstrate that the characteristics of the EOS required by the astrophysical constraints do not necessarily imply the existence of a hadron-quark phase transition in the stellar core.

Hadronic Resonance Gas Model and Multiplicity Dependence in p-p, p-Pb, Pb-Pb collisions: Strangeness Enhancement

Recently the ALICE collaboration has observed an interesting systematic behaviour of ratios of identified particles to pions yields at the LHC, showing that they depend solely on the charged-particle multiplicity in pp, pPb and PbPb collisions. In particular, the yields of (multi)strange particles relative to pions, increases with multiplicity and the enhancement is mode pronounced with increasing strangeness content. We will argue, that such a pattern of arises naturally in the thermal model taking into account exact strangeness conservation. Furthermore, extending the thermal model by including hadron interactions within the S-matrix approach, the ALICE data can be well quantified by the thermal particle yields at the chiral-crossover temperature, as previously found in central Pb-Pb collisions.

Relativistic nuclear collisions: Establishing a non-critical baseline for fluctuation measurements

We study the influence of global baryon number conservation on the non-critical baseline of net baryon cumulants in heavy-ion collisions in a given acceptance, accounting for the asymmetry between the mean-numbers of baryons and antibaryons. We derive the probability distribution of net baryon number in a restricted phase space from the canonical partition function that incorporates exact conservation of baryon number in the full system. Furthermore, we provide tools to compute cumulants of any order from the generating function of uncorrelated baryons constrained by exact baryon number conservation. The results are applied to quantify the non-critical baseline for cumulants of net proton number fluctuations obtained in heavy-ion collisions by the STAR collaboration at different RHIC energies and by the ALICE collaboration at the LHC. Furthermore, volume fluctuations are added by a Monte Carlo procedure based on the centrality dependence of charged particle production as measured experimentally. Compared to the predictions based on the hadron resonance gas model or Skellam distribution a clear suppression of fluctuations is observed due to exact baryon-number conservation. The suppression increases with the order of the cumulant and towards lower collision energies. Predictions for net proton cumulants up to the eight order in heavy-ion collisions are given for experimentally accessible collision energies.

Deconfinement in the presence of a strong magnetic field

We study the impact of a finite magnetic field on the deconfinement phase transition for heavy quarks by computing the fluctuations of the Polyakov loops. It is demonstrated that the explicit Z(3) breaking field increases with the magnetic field, leading to a decrease in the (pseudo) critical temperatures and a shrinking first-order region in the phase diagram. Phenomenological equations that capture the behaviors of the Z(3) breaking field at strong and weak magnetic fields for massive and massless quarks are given. Lastly, we explore the case of dynamical light quarks and demonstrate how an improved constituent quark mass function can enforce the correct magnetic field dependence of the deconfinement temperature in an effective model, as observed in Lattice QCD calculations.

Multiplicity dependence of (multi-)strange baryons in the canonical ensemble with phase shift corrections

The increase in strangeness production with charged particle multiplicity, as seen by the ALICE collaboration at CERN in p-p, p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions, is investigated in the hadron resonance gas model taking into account interactions among hadrons using S-matrix corrections based on known phase shift analyses. Strangeness conservation is taken into account in the framework of the canonical strangeness ensemble. A very good description is obtained for the variation of the strangeness content in the final state as a function of the number of charged hadrons in the mid-rapidity region using the same fixed temperature value as obtained in the most central Pb-Pb collisions. It is shown that the number of charged hadrons is linearly proportional to the volume of the system. For small multiplicities the canonical ensemble with local strangeness conservation restricted to mid-rapidity leads to a stronger suppression of (multi-)strange baryons than seen in the data. This is compensated by introducing a global conservation of strangeness in the whole phase-space which is parameterized by the canonical correlation volume larger than the fireball volume at the mid-rapidity. The results on comparing the hadron resonance gas model with and without S-matrix corrections, are presented in detail. It is shown that the interactions introduced by the phase shift analysis via the S-matrix formalism are essential for a better description of the yields data.

Net-proton number fluctuations in the presence of the QCD critical point

Event-by-event fluctuations of the net-proton number studied in heavy-ion collisions provide an important means in the search for the conjectured critical end point (CP) in the QCD phase diagram. We propose a phenomenological model in which the fluctuations of the chiral critical mode couple to protons and anti-protons. This allows us to study the behavior of the net-proton number fluctuations in the presence of the CP. Calculating the net-proton number cumulants, $C_n$ with n=1,2,3,4, along the phenomenological freeze-out line we show that the ratio of variance and mean $C_2/C_1$, as well as kurtosis $C_4/C_2$ resemble qualitative properties observed in data in heavy-ion collisions as a function of beam energy obtained by the STAR Collaboration at RHIC. In particular, the non-monotonic structure of the kurtosis and smooth change of the $C_2/C_1$ ratio with beam energy could be due to the CP located near the freeze-out line. The skewness, however, exhibits properties that are in contrast to the criticality expected due to the CP. The dependence of our results on the model parameters and the proximity of the chemical freeze-out to the critical point are also discussed.

Effects of kinematic cuts on net-electric charge fluctuations

The effects of kinematic cuts on electric charge fluctuations in a gas of charged particles are discussed. We consider a very transparent example of an ideal pion gas with quantum statistics, which can be viewed as a multi-component gas of Boltzmann particles with different charges and masses. Cumulants of net-electric charge fluctuations $χ_n^Q$ are calculated in a static and expanding medium with flow parameters adjusted to the experimental data. We show that the transverse momentum cut, $p_{t_\text{min}}\leq p_t\leq p_{t_\text{max}}$, weakens the effects of Bose statistics, i.e. contributions of effectively multi-charged states to higher order moments. Consequently, cuts in $p_t$ modify the experimentally measured cumulants and their ratios. We discuss the influence of kinematic cuts on the ratio of mean and variance of electric charge fluctuations in a hadron resonance gas, in the light of recent data of the STAR and PHENIX Collaborations. We find that the different momentum cuts of $p_{t_\text{min}}=0.2$~GeV (STAR) and $p_{t_\text{min}}=0.3$~GeV (PHENIX) are responsible for more than 30\% of the difference between these two data sets. We argue that the $p_t$ cuts imposed on charged particles will influence the normalized kurtosis {$κ_Qσ_Q^2 = χ_4^Q/χ_2^Q$} of the electric charge fluctuations. In particular, the reduction of $κ_Qσ_Q^2$ with increasing $p_{t_\text{min}}$ will lead to differences between PHENIX and STAR data of ${\cal O}(6\%)$ which currently are buried under large statistical and systematic errors. We furthermore introduce the relation between momentum cut-off and finite volume effects, which is of relevance for the comparison between experimental data and lattice QCD calculations.

Finite volume corrections and low momentum cuts in the thermodynamics of quantum gases

The conjecture, that the finite volume corrections to the thermodynamic functions can be correctly reproduced by using the thermodynamic limit with low particle momenta cutoff is examined in a very transparent example of an ideal boson gas in one dimension. We show that this conjecture is always true in principle, and derive convenient relations for the momentum cutoff dependence on thermal parameters in the asymptotic limits of large and small volume.

Modeling chiral criticality and its consequences for heavy-ion collisions

We explore the critical fluctuations near the chiral critical endpoint (CEP) in a chiral effective model and discuss possible signals of the CEP, recently explored experimentally in nuclear collision. Particular attention is paid to the dependence of such signals on the location of the phase boundary and the CEP relative to the chemical freeze-out conditions in nuclear collisions. We argue that in effective models, standard freeze-out fits to heavy-ion data should not be used directly. Instead, the relevant quantities should be examined on lines in the phase diagram that are defined self-consistently, within the framework of the model. We discuss possible choices for such an approach.

Thermodynamics of Van der Waals Fluids with quantum statistics

We consider thermodynamics of the van der Waals fluid of quantum systems. We derive general relations of thermodynamic functions and parameters of any ideal gas and the corresponding van der Waals fluid. This provides unambiguous generalization of the classical van der Waals theory to quantum statistical systems. As an example, we apply the van der Waals fluid with fermi statistics to characterize the liquid-gas critical point in nuclear matter. We also introduce the Bose-Einstein condensation in the relativistic van der Waals boson gas, and argue, that it exhibits two-phase structure separated in space.

Weak and strong coupling limits of the Boltzmann equation in the relaxation-time approximation

We consider a momentum dependent relaxation time for the Boltzmann equation in the relaxation time approximation. We employ a power law parametrization for the momentum dependence of the relaxation time, and calculate the shear and bulk viscosity, as well as, the charge and heat conductivity. We show, that for the two popular parametrizations, referred to as the linear and quadratic ansatz, one can obtain transport coefficients which corresponds to the weak and strong coupling regimes, respectively. We also show that, for a system of massless particles with vanishing chemical potential, the off-equilibrium corrections to the phase-space distribution function calculated with the quadratic ansatz are identical with those of the Grad's 14-moment method.

Confronting fluctuations of conserved charges in central nuclear collisions at the LHC with predictions from Lattice QCD

We construct net baryon number and strangeness susceptibilities as well as correlations between electric charge and strangeness from experimental data of the ALICE Collaboration at the CERN LHC. The data were taken in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=2.76 TeV. The resulting fluctuations and correlations are consistent with Lattice QCD results at the chiral crossover pseudocritical temperature $T_c\simeq 155$ MeV. This agreement lends strong support to the assumption that the fireball created in these collisions is of thermal origin and exhibits characteristic properties expected in QCD at the transition from the quark gluon plasma to the hadronic phase. The volume of the fireball for one unit of rapidity at $T_c$ is found to exceed 4000 fm$^3$. A detailed discussion on uncertainties in the temperature and volume of the fireball is presented. The results are linked to pion interferometry measurements and predictions from percolation theory.

Correlations between light and heavy flavors near the chiral crossover

Thermal fluctuations and correlations between the light and heavy-light mesons are explored within a chiral effective theory implementing heavy quark symmetry. We show, that various heavy-light flavor correlations indicate a remnant of the chiral criticality in a narrow range of temperature where the chiral susceptibility exhibits a peak structure. The onset of the chiral crossover, in the heavy-light flavor correlations, is therefore independent from the light flavors. This indicates that the fluctuations carried by strange charmed mesons can also be used to identify the chiral crossover, which is dominated by the non-strange light quark dynamics.

Dirac spectrum representation of Polyakov loop fluctuations in lattice QCD

Dirac spectrum representations of the Polyakov loop fluctuations are derived on the temporally odd-number lattice, where the temporal length is odd with the periodic boundary condition. We investigate the Polyakov loop fluctuations based on these analytical relations. It is semianalytically and numerically found that the low-lying Dirac eigenmodes have little contribution to the Polyakov loop fluctuations, which are sensitive probe for the quark deconfinement. Our results suggest no direct one-to-one corresponding between quark confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD.

Matching the Hagedorn mass spectrum with Lattice QCD results

Based on recent Lattice QCD (LQCD) results obtained at finite temperature, we discuss modeling of the hadronic phase of QCD in the framework of Hadron Resonance Gas (HRG) with discrete and continuous mass spectra. We focus on fluctuations of conserved charges, and show how a common limiting temperature can be used to constrain the Hagedorn exponential mass spectrum in different sectors of quantum number, through a matching of HRG and LQCD. For strange baryons, the extracted spectra are found to be consistent with all known and expected states listed by the Particle Data Group (PDG). The strange-mesonic sector, however, requires additional states in the intermediate mass range beyond that embodied in the database.

Momentum scale dependence of the net quark number fluctuations near chiral crossover

We investigate properties of the net baryon number fluctuations near chiral crossover in a hot and dense medium of strongly interacting quarks. The chirally invariant quark-antiquark interactions are modeled by an effective quark-meson Lagrangian. To preserve remnants of criticality in the O(4) universality class, we apply the functional renormalization group method to describe thermodynamics near chiral crossover. Our studies are focused on the influence of the momentum cuts on the critical behavior of different cumulants of the net quark number fluctuations. We use the momentum scale dependence of the flow equation to examine how the suppression of the momentum modes in the infrared and ultraviolet regime modifies generic properties of fluctuations expected in the O(4) universality class. We show, that the pion mass $m_π$ is a natural soft momentum scale at which cumulants are saturated at their critical values, whereas for scales larger than $2m_π$ the characteristic O(4) structure of the higher order cumulants get lost. These results indicate, that when measuring fluctuations of the net baryon number in heavy ion collisions to search for a partial restoration of chiral symmetry or critical point, a special care have to be made when introducing kinematical cuts on the fluctuation measurements.

Polyakov loop fluctuations in Dirac eigenmode expansion

We investigate correlations of the Polyakov loop fluctuations with eigenmodes of the lattice Dirac operator. Their analytic relations are derived on the temporally odd-number size lattice with the normal non-twisted periodic boundary condition for the link-variables. We find that the low-lying Dirac modes yield negligible contributions to the Polyakov loop fluctuations. This property is confirmed to be valid in confined and deconfined phase by numerical simulations in SU(3) quenched QCD. These results indicate that there is no direct, one-to-one correspondence between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD in the context of different properties of the Polyakov loop fluctuation ratios.

Relativistic second-order dissipative hydrodynamics at finite chemical potential

Starting from the Boltzmann equation in the relaxation time approximation and employing a Chapman-Enskog like expansion for the distribution function close to equilibrium, we derive second-order evolution equations for the shear stress tensor and the dissipative charge current for a system of massless quarks and gluons. The transport coefficients are obtained exactly using quantum statistics for the phase space distribution functions at non-zero chemical potential. We show that, within the relaxation time approximation, the second-order evolution equations for the shear stress tensor and the dissipative charge current can be decoupled. We find that, for large values of the ratio of chemical potential to temperature, the charge conductivity is small compared to the coefficient of shear viscosity. Moreover, we show that in the relaxation-time approximation, the limiting behaviour of the ratio of heat conductivity to shear viscosity is qualitatively similar to that obtained for a strongly coupled conformal plasma.

Strangeness fluctuations from $K-π$ interactions

Motivated by recent lattice QCD studies, we explore the effects of interactions on strangeness fluctuations in strongly interacting matter at finite temperature. We focus on S-wave $Kπ$ scattering and discuss the role of the $K_0^*(800)$ and $K^*(1430)$ resonances. The interaction contribution is obtained within the S-matrix formulation of thermodynamics, using the empirical $Kπ$ phase shifts as input. We find that the simplified treatment of the interactions in this channel, employed in the hadron resonance gas approach, leads to an overestimate of the strangeness fluctuations. Thus, our calculation indicates that broad resonances must be treated with caution, when modeling QCD thermodynamics in the hadronic phase.

The Legacy of Rolf Hagedorn: Statistical Bootstrap and Ultimate Temperature

In the latter half of the last century, it became evident that there exists an ever increasing number of different states of the so-called elementary particles. The usual reductionist approach to this problem was to search for a simpler infrastructure, culminating in the formulation of the quark model and quantum chromodynamics. In a complementary, completely novel approach, Hagedorn suggested that the mass distribution of the produced particles follows a self-similar composition pattern, predicting an unbounded number of states of increasing mass. He then concluded that such a growth would lead to a limiting temperature for strongly interacting matter. We discuss the conceptual basis for this approach, its relation to critical behavior, and its subsequent applications in different areas of high energy physics.

Thermodynamics of the low density excluded volume hadron gas

We consider thermodynamics of the excluded volume particles at finite temperature and chemical potential, in the low density approximation. We assume Boltzmann statistics and study the influence of the excluded volume on an ideal gas thermodynamics at the same temperature, pressure and numbers of particles. We show, that considering the change of the free enthalpy due to the excluded volume, and using the Maxwell identities, one can derive relevant thermodynamic functions and parameters of multi-component gases. The derivation is quite general as particles may have different sizes and shapes which can also depend on their momenta. Besides it's simplicity and generality, our approach has the advantage of eliminating the transcendental equations occurring in earlier studies. A representative example of the excluded volume thermodynamics is the single-component gas of hard spheres. For this case, using the viral expansion, the validity limits of the low-density approximation are also discussed.

Polyakov loop fluctuations and deconfinement in the limit of heavy quarks

We explore the influence of heavy quarks on the deconfinement phase transition in an effective model for gluons interacting with dynamical quarks in color SU(3). With decreasing quark mass, the strength of the explicit breaking of the Z(3) symmetry grows and the first-order transition ends in a critical endpoint. The nature of the critical endpoint is examined by studying the longitudinal and transverse fluctuations of the Polyakov loop, quantified by the corresponding susceptibilities. The longitudinal susceptibility is enhanced in the critical region, while the transverse susceptibility shows a monotonic behavior across the transition point. We investigate the dependence of the critical endpoint on the number of quark flavors at vanishing and finite quark density. Finally we confront the model results with lattice calculations and discuss a possible link between the hopping parameter and the quark mass.

Effective gluon potential and Yang-Mills thermodynamics

We derive the Polyakov-loop thermodynamic potential in the perturbative approach to pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory. The potential expressed in terms of the Polyakov loop in the fundamental representation corresponds to that of the strong-coupling expansion, of which the relevant coefficients of the gluon energy distribution are specified by characters of the SU(3) group. At high temperature, the potential exhibits the correct asymptotic behavior, whereas at low temperature, it disfavors gluons as appropriate dynamical degrees of freedom. To quantify the Yang-Mills thermodynamics in confined phase, we introduce a hybrid approach which matches the effective gluon potential to that of glueballs, constrained by the QCD trace anomaly in terms of dilaton fields.

Implementation of chromomagnetic gluons in Yang-Mills thermodynamics

Motivated by the recent high-precision lattice data on Yang-Mills equations of state, we propose an effective theory of SU(3) gluonic matter. The theory is constructed based on the center and scale symmetries and their dynamical breaking, so that the interplay between color-electric and color-magnetic gluons is included coherently. We suggest, that the magnetic gluon condensate changes its thermal behavior qualitatively above the critical temperature, as a consequence of the matching to dimensionally-reduced magnetic theories. We consider thermodynamics in the mean field approximation and discuss the properties and interpretation of the trace anomaly.

Net baryon number probability distribution near the chiral phase transition

We discuss properties of the net baryon number probability distribution near the chiral phase transition to explore the effect of critical fluctuations. Our studies are performed within Landau theory, where the coefficients of the polynomial potential are parametrized, so as to reproduce the mean-field (MF), the $Z(2)$ and $O(4)$ scaling behaviors of the cumulants of the net baryon number. We show, that in the critical region, the structure of the probability distribution changes, dependently on values of the critical exponents. In the MF approach, as well as in the $Z(2)$ universality class, the contribution of the singular part of the thermodynamic potential tends to broaden the distribution. By contrast, in the model with $O(4)$ scaling, the contribution of the singular part results in a narrower net baryon number probability distribution with a wide tail.

Net quark number probability distribution near the chiral crossover transition

We investigate properties of the probability distribution of the net quark number near the chiral crossover transition in the quark-meson model. The calculations are performed within the functional renormalization group approach, as well as in the mean-field approximation. We find, that there is a substantial influence of the underlying chiral phase transition on the properties of the probability distribution. In particular, for a physical pion mass, the distribution which includes the effect of mesonic fluctuations, differs considerably from both, the mean-field and Skellam distributions. The latter is considered as a reference for a non-critical behavior. A characteristic feature of the net quark number probability distribution is that, in the vicinity of the chiral crossover transition in the O(4) universality class, it is narrower than the corresponding mean-field and Skellam function. We study the volume dependence of the probability distribution, as well as the resulting cumulants, and discuss their approximate scaling properties.

Polyakov loop fluctuations in SU(3) lattice gauge theory and an effective gluon potential

We calculate the Polyakov loop susceptibilities in the SU(3) lattice gauge theory using the Symanzik improved gauge action on different-sized lattices. The longitudinal and transverse fluctu- ations of the Polyakov loop, as well as, that of its absolute value are considered. We analyze their properties in relation to the confinement-deconfinement phase transition. We also present results based on simulations of (2+1)-flavor QCD on 32^3 x 8 lattice using Highly Improved Staggered Quark (HISQ) action by the HotQCD collaboration. The influences of fermions on the Polyakov loop fluctuations are discussed. We show, that ratios of different susceptibilities of the Polyakov loop are sensitive probes for critical behavior. We formulate an effective model for the Polyakov loop potential and constrain its parameters from existing quenched lattice data including fluctuations. We emphasize the role of fluctuations to fully explore the thermodynamics of pure gauge theory within an effective approach.

Probing Deconfinement with Polyakov Loop Susceptibilities

The susceptibilities of the real and imaginary parts, as well as of the modulus of the Polyakov loop, are computed in SU(3) lattice gauge theory. We show that the ratios of these susceptibilities are excellent probes of the deconfinement transition, independent of the renormalization of the Polyakov loop and only weakly dependent on the system size. The ratios are almost temperature independent above and below the transition and exhibit a discontinuity at the transition temperature. This characteristic behavior can be understood in terms of the global Z(3) symmetry of the Yang-Mills Lagrangian and the general properties of the Polyakov loop probability distribution.

An effective gluon potential and hybrid approach to Yang-Mills thermodynamics

We derive the partition function for the SU(3) Yang-Mills theory in the presence of a uniform gluon field within the background field method. We show, that the $n$-body gluon contributions in the partition function are characterized solely by the Polyakov loop. We express the effective action through characters of different representations of the color gauge group resulting in a form deduced in the strong-coupling expansion. A striking feature of this potential is that at low temperature gluons are physically disfavored and therefore they do not yield the correct thermodynamics. We suggest a hybrid approach to Yang-Mills thermodynamics, combining the effective gluon potential with glueballs implemented as dilaton fields.

Probing QCD chiral cross over transition in heavy ion collisions with fluctuations

We argue that by measuring higher moments of the net proton number fluctuations in heavy ion collisions (HIC) one can probe the QCD chiral cross over transition experimentally. We discuss the properties of fluctuations of the net baryon number in the vicinity of the chiral crossover transition within the Polyakov loop extended quark-meson model at finite temperature and baryon density. The calculation includes non-perturbative dynamics implemented within the functional renormalization group approach. We find a clear signal for the chiral crossover transition in the fluctuations of the net baryon number. We address our theoretical findings to experimental data of STAR Collaboration on energy and centrality dependence of the net proton number fluctuations and their probability distributions in HIC.

Has Tc been measured by heavy ion experiments?

We discuss the role of cumulants of net baryon number fluctuations in the analysis of critical behavior in QCD and the study of freeze-out conditions in heavy ion experiments. Through the comparison of the current set of measurements of higher order cumulants of net baryon number fluctuations with lattice QCD calculations and results from hadron resonance gas model we can learn to what extent freeze-out as, determined by such cumulants, occurs close to the QCD transition temperature and thus can probe critical behavior at small values of the baryon chemical potential. Understanding how the relation between freeze-out conditions and the QCD crossover transition is reflected in properties of the experimentally determined cumulants is an important prerequisite to search for the QCD critical point. We point out that even if perfect continuum extrapolated lattice QCD results would be available, it would be inappropriate to use these observables to extract the value of the QCD transition temperature at vanishing baryon chemical potential from experimental data. We furthermore provide indications that a recently performed comparison of lattice QCD results on cumulants with data from heavy ion experiments suffer from systematic as well as statistical uncertainties in the lattice QCD calculations. This makes such comparison of lattice QCD calculations with experimental data at present not useful.

Probing deconfinement in a chiral effective model with Polyakov loop at imaginary chemical potential

The phase structure of the two-flavor Polyakov-loop extended Nambu-Jona-Lashinio model is explored at finite temperature and imaginary chemical potential with a particular emphasis on the confinement-deconfinement transition. We point out that the confined phase is characterized by a $\cos3μ_I/T$ dependence of the chiral condensate on the imaginary chemical potential while in the deconfined phase this dependence is given by $\cosμ_I/T$ and accompanied by a cusp structure induced by the Z(3) transition. We demonstrate that the phase structure of the model strongly depends on the choice of the Polyakov loop potential $\mathcal{U}$. Furthermore, we find that by changing the four fermion coupling constant $G_s$, the location of the critical endpoint of the deconfinement transition can be moved into the real chemical potential region. We propose a new parameter characterizing the confinement-deconfinement transition.

Probing deconfinement in the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model at imaginary chemical potential

The phase structure of Polyakov-loop extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model is explored at imaginary chemical potential, with particular emphasis on the deconfinement transition. We point out that the statistical confinement nature of the model naturally leads to characteristic dependence of the chiral condensate $<\bar{q}q>$ on $θ=μ_I/T$. We introduce a dual parameter for the deconfinement transition by making use of this dependence. By changing a four-fermion coupling constant, we tune the location of the critical endpoint of the deconfinement transition.

Role of mesonic fluctuations in the Polyakov loop extended quark-meson model at imaginary chemical potential

We explore the thermodynamics and phase structure of the Polyakov loop-extended two flavor chiral quark--meson (PQM) model beyond the mean-field approximation at imaginary chemical potential. Our approach is based on the functional renormalization group (FRG) method. At finite temperature and imaginary chemical potential, we solve the renormalization group flow equation for a scale-dependent thermodynamic potential in the presence of the gluonic background field. We determine behavior of order parameters of the PQM model in the FRG approach and compute the phase diagram. We compare our FRG results with that obtained in the mean-field approximation at imaginary chemical potential.

Different moments and their ratios as well as skewness and kurtosis are evaluated on the phenomenologically determined freeze-out curve in the temperature, baryon chemical potential plane. The model results and its predictions as well as relations between different moments are compared with the first data on net proton fluctuations in Au-Au collisions obtained at RHIC by the STAR Collaboration. We find good agreement between the model calculations and experimental results. We also point out that higher order moments should be more sensitive to critical behavior and will also distinguish hadron resonance gas model calculations from results obtained from lattice QCD.

From chemical freezeout to critical conditions in heavy ion collisions

We compare the statistical thermodynamics of hadron resonance gas with recent LGT results at finite chemical potential. We argue that for $T\leq T_c$ the equation of state derived from Monte--Carlo simulations of two quark--flavor QCD at finite chemical potential is consistent with that of a hadron resonance gas when applying the same set of approximations as used in LGT calculations. We indicate the relation of chemical freezeout conditions obtained from a detailed analysis of particle production in heavy ion collisions with the critical conditions required for deconfinement. We argue that the position of a hadron--quark gluon boundary line in temperature chemical potential plane can be determined in terms of the resonance gas model by the condition of fixed energy density.

Equation of State of Hadronic matter and Electromagnetic Radiation from Relativisitic Heavy Ion Collisions

We study the radiation of thermal photons and dileptons likely to be produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We find that the thermal photon multiplicity scales with the charged pion multiplicity as $dN_{ch}/dy)^α$ with $α\sim 1.2$ for a transversely expanding system, contrary to the general belief of a quadratic dependence. The scaling is shown to be valid, both for real and virtual photons. The coefficient of proportionality at a given energy may help us identify the appropriate equation of state of hot hadronic matter produced in such collisions.
