A perpendicular field electromagnet with a 250mm access bore

We present a laboratory electromagnet capable of generating magnetic fields up to $\pm$0.48T, specifically designed as a perpendicular flux source for thin film samples in an ambient environment. The magnet features a 250mm diameter clear access bore above the sample plane, thus offering compatibility with a wide variety of experimental apparatus. Despite its generous size, the magnet thermally dissipates less than 1kW at maximum field. A shaped ferromagnetic core is used to amplify and homogenize the field $\mathbf{B}$, leading to an estimated uniformity of $\pm$1.5mT ($\lesssim$0.3%) in $\left|\mathbf{B}\right|$ within a 28mm$^2$ zone at maximum field. The sample stage is thermally regulated and isolated from the magnet, enabling temperature control with $\pm$5mK precision even at elevated magnetic fields.

A disorder-enhanced quasi-one-dimensional superconductor

A powerful approach to analysing quantum systems with dimensionality $d>1$ involves adding a weak coupling to an array of one-dimensional (1D) chains. The resultant quasi-one-dimensional (q1D) systems can exhibit long-range order at low temperature, but are heavily influenced by interactions and disorder due to their large anisotropies. Real q1D materials are therefore ideal candidates not only to provoke, test and refine theories of strongly correlated matter, but also to search for unusual emergent electronic phases. Here we report the unprecedented enhancement of a superconducting instability by disorder in single crystals of Na$_{2-δ}$Mo$_6$Se$_6$, a q1D superconductor comprising MoSe chains weakly coupled by Na atoms. We argue that disorder-enhanced Coulomb pair-breaking (which usually destroys superconductivity) may be averted due to a screened long-range Coulomb repulsion intrinsic to disordered q1D materials. Our results illustrate the capability of disorder to tune and induce new correlated electron physics in low-dimensional materials.

Interfacial effects revealed by ultrafast relaxation dynamics in BiFeO$_{3}$/YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ bilayers

The temperature dependence of the relaxation dynamics in the bilayer thin film heterostructure composed of multiferroic BiFeO$_{3}$ (BFO) and superconducting YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ (YBCO) grown on a (001) SrTiO$_{3}$ substrate is studied by a time-resolved pump-probe technique, and compared with that of pure YBCO thin film grown under the same growth conditions. The superconductivity of YBCO is found to be retained in the heterostructure. We observe a speeding up of the YBCO recombination dynamics in the superconducting state of the heterostructure, and attribute it to the presence of weak ferromagnetism at the BFO/YBCO interface as observed in magnetization data. An extension of the Rothwarf-Taylor model is used to fit the ultrafast dynamics of BFO/YBCO, that models an increased quasiparticle occupation of the ferromagnetic interfacial layer in the superconducting state of YBCO.

Geometric tuning of charge and spin correlations in manganite superlattices

We report a modulation of the in-plane magnetotransport in artificial manganite superlattice (SL) [(NdMnO3)n /(SrMnO3)n /(LaMnO3)n]m by varying the layer thickness n while keeping the total thickness of the structure constant. Charge transport in these heterostructures is confined to the interfaces and occurs via variable range hopping (VRH). Upon increasing n, the interfacial separation rises, leading to a suppression of the electrostatic screening between carriers of neighboring interfaces and the opening of a Coulomb gap at the Fermi level (EF). The high-field magnetoresistance (MR) is universally negative due to progressive spin alignment. However at a critical thickness of n=5 unit cells (u.c.), an exchange field coupling between ferromagnetically ordered interfaces results in positive MR at low magnetic field (H). Our results demonstrate the ability to geometrically tune the electrical transport between regimes dominated by either charge or spin correlations.

Magnetoelastic relaxations in EuTiO3

The multiferroic properties of EuTiO3 are greatly enhanced when a sample is strained, signifying that coupling between strain and structural, magnetic or ferroelectric order parameters is extremely important. Here resonant ultrasound spectroscopy has been used to investigate strain coupling effects, as well as possible additional phase transitions, through their influence on elastic and anelastic relaxations that occur as a function of temperature between 2 and 300 K and with applied magnetic field up to 14 T. Antiferromagnetic ordering is accompanied by acoustic loss and softening, and a weak magnetoelastic effect is also associated with the change in magnetization direction below ~2.8 K. Changes in loss due to the influence of magnetic field suggest the existence of magnetic defects which couple with strain and may play a role in pinning of ferroelastic twin walls.

Multiple Broken Symmetries in Striped La$_{2-x}$Ba$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ detected by the Field Symmetric Nernst Effect

We report on a thermoelectric investigation of the stripe and superconducting phases of the cuprate La$_{2-x}$Ba$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ near the $x=1/8$ doping known to host stable stripes. We use the doping and magnetic field dependence of field-symmetric Nernst effect features to delineate the phenomenology of these phases. Our measurements are consistent with prior reports of time-reversal symmetry breaking signatures above the superconducting $T_{\rm c}$, and crucially detect a sharp, robust, field-invariant peak at the stripe charge order temperature, $T_{\rm {\scriptscriptstyle CO}}$. Our observations suggest the onset of a nontrivial charge ordered phase at $T_{\rm {\scriptscriptstyle CO}}$, and the subsequent presence of spontaneously generated vortices over a broad temperature range before the emergence of bulk superconductivity in LBCO.

Ferroelectricity in underdoped La-based cuprates

Doping a parent antiferromagnetic Mott insulator in cuprates leads to short-range electronic correlations and eventually to high-Tc superconductivity. However, the nature of charge correlations in the lightly doped cuprates remains unclear. Understanding the intermediate electronic phase in the phase diagram (between the parent insulator and the high-Tc superconductor) is expected to elucidate the complexity both inside and outside the superconducting dome, and in particular in the underdoped region. One such phase is ferroelectricity whose origin and relation to the properties of high-Tc superconductors is subject of current research. Here we demonstrate that ferroelectricity and the associated magnetoelectric coupling are in fact common in La-214 cuprates namely, La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, La$_2$Li$_x$Cu$_{1-x}$O$_4$ and La$_2$CuO$_{4+x}$. It is proposed that ferroelectricity results from local CuO$_6$ octahedral distortions, associated with the dopant atoms and/or clustering of the doped charge carriers, which break spatial inversion symmetry at the local scale whereas magnetoelectric coupling can be tuned through Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction.

Induced Ferromagnetism at BiFeO3/YBa2Cu3O7 Interfaces

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) exhibit many emergent phenomena ranging from high-temperature superconductivity and giant magnetoresistance to magnetism and ferroelectricity. In addition, when TMOs are interfaced with each other, new functionalities can arise, which are absent in individual components. Here, we report results from first-principles calculations on the magnetism at the BiFeO3/YBa2Cu3O7 interfaces. By comparing the total energy for various magnetic spin configurations inside BiFeO3, we are able to show that a metallic ferromagnetism is induced near the interface. We further develop an interface exchange-coupling model and place the extracted exchange coupling interaction strengths, from the first-principles calculations, into a resultant generic phase diagram. Our conclusion of interfacial ferromagnetism is confirmed by the presence of a hysteresis loop in field-dependent magnetization data. The emergence of interfacial ferromagnetism should have implications to electronic and transport properties.

Long-range electronic reconstruction to a $d_{xz,yz}$-dominated Fermi surface below the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface

Low dimensionality, broken symmetry and easily-modulated carrier concentrations provoke novel electronic phase emergence at oxide interfaces. However, the spatial extent of such reconstructions - i.e. the interfacial "depth" - remains unclear. Examining LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures at previously unexplored carrier densities $n_{2D}\geq6.9\times10^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$, we observe a Shubnikov-de Haas effect for small in-plane fields, characteristic of an anisotropic 3D Fermi surface with preferential $d_{xz,yz}$ orbital occupancy extending over at least 100~nm perpendicular to the interface. Quantum oscillations from the 3D Fermi surface of bulk doped SrTiO$_3$ emerge simultaneously at higher $n_{2D}$. We distinguish three areas in doped perovskite heterostructures: narrow ($<20$ nm) 2D interfaces housing superconductivity and/or other emergent phases, electronically isotropic regions far ($>120$ nm) from the interface and new intermediate zones where interfacial proximity renormalises the electronic structure relative to the bulk.

The Vortex Signature of Discrete Ferromagnetic Dipoles at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ Interface

A hysteretic in-plane magnetoresistance develops below the superconducting transition of LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfaces for $\left|H_{/\!/}\right|<$ 0.15 T, independently of the carrier density or oxygen annealing. We show that this hysteresis arises from vortex depinning within a thin superconducting layer, in which the vortices are created by discrete ferromagnetic dipoles located solely above the layer. We find no evidence for finite-momentum pairing or bulk magnetism and hence conclude that ferromagnetism is strictly confined to the interface, where it competes with superconductivity.

Bi-quadratic magnetoelectric coupling in underdoped La_2CuO_{4+x}

The recent discovery of relaxor ferroelectricity and magnetoelectric effect in lightly doped cuprate material La_2CuO_{4+x} has provided a number of questions concerning its theoretical description. It has been argued using a Ginzburg-Landau free energy approach that the magnetoelectric effect can be explained by the presence of bi-quadratic interaction terms in the free energy. Here, by using the same free energy functional, we study the variety of behavior which can emerge in the electric polarization under an external magnetic field. Subsequently, we discuss the role of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in generating this magnetoelectric response. This work is particularly relevant for such relaxor systems where the material-dependent parameters would be affected by changes in e.g. chemical doping or cooling rate.

Doping dependence of the electron-phonon and electron-spin fluctuation interactions in the high-$T_{c}$ superconductor Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$

Using ultrafast optical techniques, we detect two types of bosons strongly coupled to electrons in the family of Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ from the underdoped to overdoped regimes. The different doping dependences of the electron-boson coupling strengths enables us to identify them as phonons and spin fluctuations: electron-phonon coupling ($λ_{e-ph}$) peaks at optimal doping, and electron-spin fluctuation coupling ($λ_{e-sf}$) decreases monotonically with doping. This observation is consistent with two facts: (1) superconductivity is in close proximity with antiferromagnetism at low dopings, and (2) a pronounced lattice renormalization effect at larger dopings.

Emergence of superconductivity from the dynamically heterogeneous insulating state in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}

A central issue for copper oxides is the nature of the insulating ground state at low carrier densities and the emergence of high-temperature superconductivity from that state with doping. Even though this superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) is a zero-temperature transition, measurements are not usually carried out at low temperatures. Here we use magnetoresistance to probe both the insulating state at very low temperatures and the presence of superconducting fluctuations in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}(LSCO) films, for doping levels that range from the insulator to the superconductor (x=0.03-0.08). We observe that the charge glass behavior, characteristic of the insulating state, is suppressed with doping, but it coexists with superconducting fluctuations that emerge already on the insulating side of the SIT. The unexpected quenching of the superconducting fluctuations by the competing charge order at low temperatures provides a new perspective on the mechanism for the SIT.

Evidence for filamentary superconductivity nucleated at antiphase domain walls in antiferromagnetic CaFe$_2$As$_2$

Resistivity, magnetization and microscopic $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in the antiferromagnetically ordered state of the iron-based superconductor parent material CaFe$_2$As$_2$ exhibit anomalous features that are consistent with the collective freezing of domain walls. Below $T^*\approx 10$ K, the resistivity exhibits a peak and downturn, the bulk magnetization exhibits a sharp increase, and $^{75}$As NMR measurements reveal the presence of slow fluctuations of the hyperfine field. These features in both the charge and spin response are strongly field dependent, are fully suppressed by $H^*\approx 15$ T, and suggest the presence of filamentary superconductivity nucleated at the antiphase domain walls in this material.

Filamentary superconductivity across the phase diagram of Ba(Fe,Co)$_2$As$_2$

We show magnetotransport results on Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ ($0.0 \leq x \leq 0.13$) single crystals. We identify the low temperature resistance step at 23 K in the parent compound with the onset of filamentary superconductivity (FLSC), which is suppressed by an applied magnetic field in a similar manner to the suppression of bulk superconductivity (SC) in doped samples. FLSC is found to persist across the phase diagram until the long range antiferromagnetic order is completely suppressed. A significant suppression of FLSC occurs for $0.02<x<0.04$, the doping concentration where bulk SC emerges. Based on these results and the recent report of an electronic anisotropy maximum for 0.02 $\leq x \leq$ 0.04 [Science 329, 824 (2010)], we speculate that, besides spin fluctuations, orbital fluctuations may also play an important role in the emergence of SC in iron-based superconductors.

Intrinsic Structural Disorder and the Magnetic Ground State in Bulk EuTiO3

The magnetic properties of single-crystal EuTiO3 are suggestive of nanoscale disorder below its cubic-tetragonal phase transition. We demonstrate that electric field cooling acts to restore monocrystallinity, thus confirming that emergent structural disorder is an intrinsic low-temperature property of this material. Using torque magnetometry, we deduce that tetragonal EuTiO3 enters an easy-axis antiferromagnetic phase at 5.6 K, with a first-order transition to an easy-plane ground state below 3 K. Our data is reproduced by a 3D anisotropic Heisenberg spin model.

Low-temperature ferroelectric phase and magnetoelectric coupling in the underdoped La_2CuO_(4+x)

We report the discovery of a ferroelectric ground state below 4.5 K in highly underdoped La_2CuO_(4+x) accompanied by slow charge dynamics which develop below T~40 K. An anisotropic magnetoelectric response has also been observed, indicating considerable spin-charge coupling in this lightly doped "parent" high temperature copper-oxide superconductor. The ferroelectric state is proposed to develop from polar nanoregions, in which spatial inversion symmetry is locally broken due to non-stoichiometric carrier doping.

On the transport and thermodynamic properties of quasi-two-dimensional purple bronzes A$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ (A=Na, K)

We report a comparative study of the specific heat, electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity of the quasi-two-dimensional purple bronzes Na$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ and K$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$, with special emphasis on the behavior near their respective charge-density-wave transition temperatures $T_P$. The contrasting behavior of both the transport and the thermodynamic properties near $T_P$ is argued to arise predominantly from the different levels of intrinsic disorder in the two systems. A significant proportion of the enhancement of the thermal conductivity above $T_P$ in Na$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$, and to a lesser extent in K$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$, is attributed to the emergence of phason excitations.

Penetration depth study of LaOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$: Multiband s-wave superconductivity

We measured the magnetic penetration depth $λ(T)$ in single crystals of LaOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ ($T_c$=0.74 K) down to 85 mK using a tunnel diode oscillator technique. The observed low-temperature exponential dependence indicates a s-wave gap. Fitting the low temperature data to BCS s-wave expression gives the zero temperature gap value $Δ(0)= (1.34 \pm 0.07) k_B T_c$ which is significantly smaller than the BCS value of 1.76$k_B T_c$. In addition, the normalized superfluid density $ρ(T)$ shows an unusually long suppression near $T_c$, and are best fit by a two-band s-wave model.

Tunable ferroelectricity in artificial tri-layer superlattices comprised of non-ferroic components

Heterostructured material systems devoid of ferroic components are presumed not to display ordering associated with ferroelectricity. In heterostructures composed of transition metal oxides, however, the disruption introduced by an interface can affect the balance of the competing interactions among electronic spins, charges and orbitals. This has led to the emergence of properties absent in the original building blocks of a heterostructure, including metallicity, magnetism and superconductivity. Here we report the discovery of ferroelectricity in artificial tri-layer superlattices consisting solely of non-ferroelectric NdMnO3/SrMnO3/LaMnO3 layers. Ferroelectricity was observed below 40 K exhibiting strong tunability by superlattice periodicity. Furthermore, magnetoelectric coupling resulted in 150% magnetic modulation of the polarization. Density functional calculations indicate that broken space inversion symmetry and mixed valency, because of cationic asymmetry and interfacial polar discontinuity, respectively, give rise to the observed behavior. Our results demonstrate the engineering of asymmetric layered structures with emergent ferroelectric and magnetic field tunable functions distinct from that of normal devices, for which the components are typically ferroelectrics.

Ferromagnetic interaction between Cu ions in the bulk region of Cu-doped ZnO nanowires

We have studied the electronic structure and the magnetism of Cu-doped ZnO nanowires, which have been reported to show ferromagnetism at room temperature [G. Z. Xing ${et}$ ${al}$., Adv. Mater. {\bf 20}, 3521 (2008).], by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). From the XPS and XAS results, we find that the Cu atoms are in the "Cu$^{3+}$" state with mixture of Cu$^{2+}$ in the bulk region ($\sim$ 100 nm), and that "Cu$^{3+}$" ions are dominant in the surface region ($\sim$ 5 nm), i.e., the surface electronic structure of the surface region differs from the bulk one. From the magnetic field and temperature dependences of the XMCD intensity, we conclude that the ferromagnetic interaction in ZnO:Cu NWs comes from the Cu$^{2+}$ and "Cu$^{3+}$" states in the bulk region, and that most of the doped Cu ions are magnetically inactive probably because they are antiferromagnetically coupled with each other.

History dependent magnetoresistance in lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} thin films

The in-plane magnetoresistance (MR) in atomically smooth La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} thin films grown by molecular-beam-epitaxy was measured in magnetic fields B up to 9 T over a wide range of temperatures T. The films, with x=0.03 and x=0.05, are insulating, and the positive MR emerges at T<4 K. The positive MR exhibits glassy features, including history dependence and memory, for all orientations of B. The results show that this behavior, which reflects the onset of glassiness in the dynamics of doped holes, is a robust feature of the insulating state.

Magnetism in graphite oxide: The role of epoxy groups

We investigate the magnetism in graphite by controlled oxidation. Our approach renders graphite an insulator while maintaining its structure. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray absorption near edge structure spectra reveal that graphite oxide has epoxy groups on its surface and it is not thermally stable. Magnetic susceptibility data exhibit negative Curie temperature, field irreversibility, and slow relaxation. The magnetic properties diminish after the epoxy groups are destroyed. The overall results indicate the unexpected magnetism is associated with the presence of epoxy groups.

Memory Effects in the Charge Response of Lightly Doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}

The in-plane magnetoresistance (MR) of a single crystal La_{1.97}Sr_{0.03}CuO_{4} has been studied at low temperatures T using several experimental protocols. At T well below the spin-glass transition temperature, the MR becomes positive and exhibits several glassy features, such as history dependence, memory and hysteresis. These observations are qualitatively similar to the previously reported behavior of the out-of-plane resistance. The results suggest that the memory effects in the MR are related to the onset of glassiness in the dynamics of doped holes.

Metallic characteristics in superlattices composed of insulators, NdMnO3/SrMnO3/LaMnO3

We report on the electronic properties of superlattices composed of three different antiferromagnetic insulators, NdMnO3/SrMnO3/LaMnO3 grown on SrTiO3 substrates. Photoemission spectra obtained by tuning the x-ray energy at the Mn 2p -> 3d edge show a Fermi cut-off, indicating metallic behavior mainly originating from Mn e_g electrons. Furthermore, the density of states near the Fermi energy and the magnetization obey a similar temperature dependence, suggesting a correlation between the spin and charge degrees of freedom at the interfaces of these oxides.

Non-Gaussian Noise in the In-Plane Transport of Lightly Doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_4: Evidence for a Collective State of Charge Clusters

A study of the in-plane resistance noise on a high quality single crystal of La_{1.97}Sr_{0.03}CuO_{4} deep inside the spin-glass phase reveals the onset of non-Gaussianity and the insensitivity of the noise to the in-plane magnetic field. The results indicate that the charge dynamics becomes increasingly slow and correlated as temperature T -> 0. The analysis of the higher order noise statistics provides evidence for the existence of a collective ground state of charge clusters, which seem to coexist with charge-poor antiferromagnetic domains that are frozen at such low T.

Strain-induced interface reconstruction in epitaxial heterostructures

We investigate in the framework of Landau theory the distortion of the strain fields at the interface of two dissimilar ferroelastic oxides that undergo a structural cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition. Simple analytical solutions are derived for the dilatational and the order parameter strains that are globally valid over the whole of the heterostructure. The solutions reveal that the dilatational strain exhibits compression close to the interface which may in turn affect the electronic properties in that region.

Theory of the magnetoeletric effect in a lightly doped high-Tc cuprate

In a recent study Viskadourakis et al. discovered that extremely underdoped La_2CuO_(4+x) is a relaxor ferroelectric and a magnetoelectric material at low temperatures. It is further observed that the magnetoelectric response is anisotropic for different directions of electric polarization and applied magnetic field. By constructing an appropriate Landau theory, we show that a bi-quadratic magnetoelectric coupling can explain the experimentally observed polarization dependence on magnetic field. This coupling leads to several novel low-temperature effects including a feedback enhancement of the magnetization below the ferroelectric transition, and a predicted magnetocapacitive effect.

Large Positive Magnetoresistance of the Lightly Doped La_{2}CuO_{4} Mott Insulator

The in-plane and out-of-plane magnetoresistance (MR) of single crystals of La_2CuO_4, lightly doped (x=0.03) with either Sr (La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4) or Li (La_2Cu_{1-x}Li_xO_4), have been measured in the fields applied parallel and perpendicular to the CuO_2 planes. Both La_{1.97}Sr_{0.03}CuO_4 and La_2Cu_{0.97}Li_{0.03}O_4 exhibit the emergence of a positive MR at temperatures (T) well below the spin glass (SG) transition temperature T_{sg}, where charge dynamics is also glassy. This positive MR grows as T->0 and shows hysteresis and memory. In this regime, the in-plane resistance R_{ab}(T,B) is described by a scaling function, suggesting that short-range Coulomb repulsion between two holes in the same disorder-localized state plays a key role at low T. The results highlight similarities between this magnetic material and a broad class of well-studied, nonmagnetic disordered insulators.

Nernst effect and diamagnetic response in a stripe model of superconducting cuprates

We examine the possibility that the experimentally observed enhancement of superconducting (SC) fluctuations above the SC transition temperature in the underdoped cuprates is caused by stripes -- an intrinsic electronic inhomogeneity, common to hole-doped cuprates. By evaluating the strengths of the diamagnetic response and the Nernst effect within the striped SC model, we find results that are qualitatively consistent with the experimental observations. We make a prediction for anisotropic thermopower in detwinned samples that can be used to further test the proposed scenario.

Quasiparticle dynamics in overdoped Bi$_{1.4}$Pb$_{0.7}$Sr$_{1.9}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$: Coexistence of superconducting gap and pseudogap below $T_{c}$

Photoexcited quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in overdoped Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ ($T_{c}$=65~K, hole doping $p$=0.22) single crystal is investigated as a function of temperature. We provide evidence of a $\sim$22~meV pseudogap ($T^{\ast}$$\approx$100~K) at this doping level. Our data support the scenario where both the superconducting gap and pseudogap coexist in the superconducting state. Our results also suggest an increased scattering rate between electrons and spin fluctuations as the sample enters the pseudogap phase.

We have investigated the magnetic properties of transition metal oxide superlattices with broken inversion symmetry composed of three different antiferromagnetic insulators, [NdMnO3/SrMnO3/LaMnO3]. In the superlattices studied here, we identify the emergence of a relaxor, glassy-like behavior below spin glass temperature, T=36K. Tunable magnetic interaction at the atomic scale in oxide heterostructures

We report on a systematic study of a number of structurally identical but chemically distinct transition metal oxides in order to determine how the material-specific properties such as the composition and the strain affect the properties at the interface of heterostructures. Our study considers a series of structures containing two layers of ferromagnetic SrRuO3, with antiferromagnetic insulating manganites sandwiched in between. The results demonstrate how to control the strength and relative orientation of interfacial ferromagnetism in correlated electron materials by means of valence state variation and substrate-induced strain, respectively.

Ultrafast pump-probe study of phase separation and competing orders in the underdoped (Ba,K)Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ superconductor

We report measurements of quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in the high-temperature superconductor (Ba,K)Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ in optimally doped, underdoped and undoped regimes. In the underdoped sample, spin-density wave (SDW) order forms at $\sim$85 K, followed by superconductivity at $\sim$ 28 K. We find the emergence of a normal-state order that suppresses SDW at a temperature $T^{\ast} \sim$ 60 K and argue that this normal-state order is a precursor to superconductivity.

Lattice effects in the La$_{\rm 2-x}$Sr$_{\rm x}$CuO$_{\rm 4}$ compounds

Systematic Raman studies on several cuprates (YBa$_{\rm 2}$Cu$_{\rm 3}$O$_{\rm x}$, YBa$_{\rm 2}$Cu$_{\rm 4}$O$_{\rm 8}$ or Bi$_{\rm 2}$Sr$_{\rm 2}$CaCu$_{\rm 2}$O$_{\rm 8}$) have shown that at optimal doping the compounds are at the edge of lattice instability; once this level is exceeded, by means of doping or applying external hydrostatic pressure, the changes in the transition temperature are accompanied by spectral modifications. There are strong indications that the reduction in T$_{\rm c}$ is correlated with a separation into nanoscale phases, which involve the oxygen atoms of the CuO$_{\rm 2}$ planes. In this work, modifications with doping in the Raman spectra of the La$_{\rm 2-x}$Sr$_{\rm x}$CuO$_{\rm 4}$ compound are presented, which show that spin or charge ordering is coupled with lattice distortions in the whole doping region.

Temperature dependence of electrical resistivity of high-Tc cuprates - from pseudogap to overdoped regions

The effects of planar hole concentration, p, and in-plane disorder, Zn (y), on the DC resistivity, r(T), of sintered samples of Y_{1-x}Ca_xBa_2(Cu_{1-y}Zn_y)_3O_{7-d} were investigated over a wide doping range by changing both the oxygen deficiency (d) and Ca content (x). From the r(T,p) data we extracted characteristic crossover temperatures on the underdoped and overdoped sides, T* and T_m respectively, above which r(T) is linear. We compare our results with a number of other polycrystalline, thin film and single crystal cuprate superconductors and find similar behavior in the p-dependence of T*(p), T_m(p), and the resistivity exponent, m(p), in fits to r(T) = r_0 + aT^m on the overdoped side. Our findings point towards the possible existence of a quantum critical point (QCP) at the doping p=0.19 +/- 0.01.

Antiferromagnetic Correlations versus Superfluid Density in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4

We have performed muon spin relaxation and low field ac-susceptibility measurements in a series of high quality samples of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (x=0.08-0.24) as a function of temperature. Superconductivity is found to coexist with low temperature spin glass order up to the optimally doped region where the normal state pseudogap also closes. The systematic depletion of the superfluid density with the enhancement of aniferromagnetic correlations with underdoping indicates a competition between antiferromagnetic correlations and superconductivity.

Low Temperature Superfluid Response of High-Tc Superconductors

We have reviewed our theoretical and experimental results of the low temperature superfluid response function of high temperature superconductors (HTSC). In clean high-Tc materials the in-plane superfluid density rho_s^{ab} varies linearly with temperature. The slope of this linear T term is found to scale approximately with 1/Tc which, according to the weak coupling BCS theory for a d-wave superconductor, implies that the gap amplitude scales approximately with Tc. A T^5 behavior of the out-of-plane superfluid density rho_s^c for clean tetragonal HTSC was predicted and observed experimentally in the single layer Hg-compound HgBa_2CuO_{4+delta}. In other tetragonal high-Tc compounds with relatively high anisotropy, such as Hg_2Ba_2Ca_2Cu_3O_{8+delta}, rho_s^c varies as T^2 due to disorder effects. In optimally doped YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta}, rho_s^c varies linearly with temperature at low temperatures, but in underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta}, rho_s^c varies as T^2 at low temperatures; these results are consistent with our theoretical calculations.

Systematic behaviour of the in-plane penetration depth in d-wave cuprates

We report the temperature T and oxygen concentration dependences of the penetration depth of grain-aligned YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} with δ= 0.0, 0.3 and 0.43. The values of the in-plane λ_{ab}(0) and out-of-plane λ_{c}(0) penetration depths, the low temperature linear term in λ_{ab}(T), and the ratio λ_{c}(0) /λ_{ab}(T) were found to increase with increasing $δ$. The systematic changes of the linear term in λ_{ab}(T) with T_c found here and in recent work on HgBa_2Ca_{n-1} Cu_nO_{2n+2+δ} (n = 1 and 3) are discussed.
