Partially fundamentally reducible operators in Krein spaces

A self-adjoint operator $A$ in a Krein space $\bigl({\mathcal K},[\,\cdot\,,\cdot\,]\bigr)$ is called partially fundamentally reducible if there exist a fundamental decomposition ${\mathcal K} = {\mathcal K}_+ [\dot{+}] {\mathcal K}_-$ (which does not reduce $A$) and densely defined symmetric operators $S_+$ and $S_-$ in the Hilbert spaces $\bigl({\mathcal K}_+,[\,\cdot\,,\cdot\,]\bigr)$ and $\bigl({\mathcal K}_-,-[\,\cdot\,,\cdot\,]\bigr)$, respectively, such that each $S_+$ and $S_-$ has defect numbers $(1,1)$ and the operator $A$ is a self-adjoint extension of $S =S_+ \oplus (-S_-)$ in the Krein space $\bigl({\mathcal K},[\,\cdot\,,\cdot\,]\bigr)$. The operator $A$ is interpreted as a coupling of operators $S_+$ and $-S_-$ relative to some boundary triples $\bigl({\mathbb C},Γ_0^+,Γ_1^+\bigr)$ and $\bigl({\mathbb C},Γ_0^-,Γ_1^-\bigr)$. Sufficient conditions for a nonnegative partially fundamentally reducible operator $A$ to be similar to a self-adjoint operator in a Hilbert space are given in terms of the Weyl functions $m_+$ and $m_-$ of $S_+$ and $S_-$ relative to the boundary triples $\bigl({\mathbb C},Γ_0^+,Γ_1^+\bigr)$ and $\bigl({\mathbb C},Γ_0^-,Γ_1^-\bigr)$. Moreover, it is shown that under some asymptotic assumptions on $m_+$ and $m_-$ all positive self-adjoint extensions of the operator $S$ are similar to self-adjoint operators in a Hilbert space.

The Riesz basis property of an indefinite Sturm-Liouville problem with non-separated boundary conditions

We consider a regular indefinite Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem \{$-f" + q f = λr f$} on $[a,b]$ subject to general self-adjoint boundary conditions and with a weight function $r$ which changes its sign at finitely many, so-called turning points. We give sufficient and in some cases necessary and sufficient conditions for the Riesz basis property of this eigenvalue problem. In the case of separated boundary conditions we extend the class of weight functions $r$ for which the Riesz basis property can be completely characterized in terms of the local behavior of $r$ in a neighborhood of the turning points. We identify a class of non-separated boundary conditions for which, in addition to the local behavior of $r$ in a neighborhood of the turning points, local conditions on $r$ near the boundary are needed for the Riesz basis property. As an application, it is shown that the Riesz basis property for the periodic boundary conditions is closely related to a regular HELP-type inequality without boundary conditions.

Triangles and groups via cevians

For a given triangle $T$ and a real number $ρ$ we define Ceva's triangle $\CT_ρ(T)$ to be the triangle formed by three cevians each joining a vertex of $T$ to the point which divides the opposite side in the ratio $ρ:(1-ρ)$. We identify the smallest interval $\nM_T \subset \nR$ such that the family $\CT_ρ(T), ρ\in \nM_T$, contains all Ceva's triangles up to similarity. We prove that the composition of operators $\CT_ρ, ρ\in \nR$, acting on triangles is governed by a certain group structure on $\nR$. We use this structure to prove that two triangles have the same Brocard angle if and only if a congruent copy of one of them can be recovered by sufficiently many iterations of two operators $\CT_ρ$ and $\CT_ξ$ acting on the other triangle.

Riesz Bases of Root Vectors of Indefinite Sturm-Liouville problems with eigenparameter dependent boundary conditions, I

We consider a regular indefinite Sturm-Liouville problem with two self-adjoint boundary conditions, one being affinely dependent on the eigenparameter. We give sufficient conditions under which a basis of each root subspace for this Sturm-Liouville problem can be selected so that the union of all these bases constitutes a Riesz basis of a corresponding weighted Hilbert space.
