Gap theorems for ends of smooth metric measure spaces

In this paper, we establish two gap theorems for ends of smooth metric measure space $(M^n, g,e^{-f}dv)$ with the Bakry-Émery Ricci tensor $\mathrm{Ric}_f\ge-(n-1)$ in a geodesic ball $B_o(R)$ with radius $R$ and center $o\in M^n$. When $\mathrm{Ric}_f\ge 0$ and $f$ has some degeneration outside $B_o(R)$, we show that there exists an $ε=ε(n,\sup_{B_o(1)}|f|)$ such that such a space has at most two ends if $R\leε$. When $\mathrm{Ric}_f\ge\frac 12$ and $f(x)\le\frac 14d^2(x,B_o(R))+c$ for some constant $c>0$ outside $B_o(R)$, we can also get the same gap conclusion.

Essential self-adjointness and the $L^2$-Liouville property

We discuss connections between the essential self-adjointness of a symmetric operator and the constancy of functions which are in the kernel of the adjoint of the operator. We then illustrate this relationship in the case of Laplacians on both manifolds and graphs. Furthermore, we discuss the Green's function and when it gives a non-constant harmonic function which is square integrable.

Combinatorial Ricci flows and the hyperbolization of a class of compact 3-manifolds

We prove that for a compact 3-manifold M with boundary admitting an ideal triangulation T with valence at least 10 at all edges, there exists a unique complete hyperbolic metric with totally geodesic boundary, so that T is isotopic to a geometric decomposition of M. Our approach is to use a variant of the combinatorial Ricci flow introduced by Luo [Luo05] for pseudo 3-manifolds. In this case, we prove that the extended Ricci flow converges to the hyperbolic metric exponentially fast.

Combinatorial Ricci flows with applications to the hyperbolization of cusped 3-manifolds

In this paper, we adopt combinatorial Ricci curvature flow methods to study the existence of cusped hyperbolic structure on 3-manifolds with torus boundary. For general pseudo 3-manifolds, we prove the long-time existence and the uniqueness for the extended Ricci flow for decorated hyperbolic polyhedral metrics. We prove that the extended Ricci flow converges to a decorated hyperbolic polyhedral metric if and only if there exists a decorated hyperbolic polyhedral metric of zero Ricci curvature. If it is the case, the flow converges exponentially fast. These results apply for cusped hyperbolic structure on 3-manifolds via ideal triangulation.

Discrete harmonic functions on infinite penny graphs

In this paper, we study discrete harmonic functions on infinite penny graphs. For an infinite penny graph with bounded facial degree, we prove that the volume doubling property and the Poincaré inequality hold, which yields the Harnack inequality for positive harmonic functions. Moreover, we prove that the space of polynomial growth harmonic functions, or ancient solutions of the heat equation, with bounded growth rate has finite dimensional property.

Universal inequalities for Dirichlet eigenvalues on discrete groups

We prove universal inequalities for Laplacian eigenvalues with Dirichlet boundary conditions on subsets of certain discrete groups. The study of universal inequalities on Riemannian manifolds was initiated by Weyl, Polya, Yau, and others. Here we focus on a version by Cheng and Yang. Specifically, we prove Yang-type universal inequalities for Cayley graphs of finitely generated amenable groups, as well as for the d-regular tree (simple random walk on the free group).

A Note on Local Unitary Equivalence of Isotropic-like States

We consider the local unitary equivalence of a class of quantum states in bipartite case and multipartite case. The necessary and sufficient condition is presented. As special cases, the local unitary equivalent classes of isotropic state and werner state are provided. Then we study the local unitary similar equivalence of this class of quantum states and analyze the necessary and sufficient condition.

Harmonic functions on metric measure spaces

In this paper, we study harmonic functions on metric measure spaces with Riemannian Ricci curvature bounded from below, which were introduced by Ambrosio-Gigli-Savaré. We prove a Cheng-Yau type local gradient estimate for harmonic functions on these spaces. Furthermore, we derive various optimal dimension estimates for spaces of polynomial growth harmonic functions on metric measure spaces with nonnegative Riemannian Ricci curvature.

Quantum Nonlocality of Arbitrary Dimensional Bipartite States

We study the nonlocality of arbitrary dimensional bipartite quantum states. By computing the maximal violation of a set of multi-setting Bell inequalities, an analytical and computable lower bound has been derived for general two-qubit states. This bound gives the necessary condition that a two-qubit state admits no local hidden variable models. The lower bound is shown to be better than that from the CHSH inequality in judging the nonlocality of some quantum states. The results are generalized to the case of high dimensional quantum states, and a sufficient condition for detecting the non-locality has been presented.

Towards Grothendieck Constants and LHV Models in Quantum Mechanics

We adopt a continuous model to estimate the Grothendieck constants. An analytical formula to compute the lower bounds of Grothendieck constants has been explicitly derived for arbitrary orders, which improves previous bounds. Moreover, our lower bound of the Grothendieck constant of order three gives a refined bound of the threshold value for the nonlocality of the two-qubit Werner states.

A notion of nonpositive curvature for general metric spaces

We introduce a new definition of nonpositive curvature in metric spaces and study its relationship to the existing notions of nonpositive curvature in comparison geometry. The main feature of our definition is that it applies to all metric spaces and does not rely on geodesics. Moreover, a scaled and a relaxed version of our definition are appropriate in discrete metric spaces, and are believed to be of interest in geometric data analysis.

On the symmetry of the Laplacian spectra of signed graphs

We study the symmetry properties of the spectra of normalized Laplacians on signed graphs. We find a new machinery that generates symmetric spectra for signed graphs, which includes bipartiteness of unsigned graphs as a special case. Moreover, we prove a fundamental connection between the symmetry of the spectrum and the existence of damped two-periodic solutions for the discrete-time heat equation on the graph.

Weak Schmidt decomposition and generalized Bell basis related to Hadamard matrices

We study the mathematical structures and relations among some quantities in the theory of quantum entanglement, such as separability, weak Schmidt decompositions, Hadamard matrices etc.. We provide an operational method to identify the Schmidt-correlated states by using weak Schmidt decomposition. We show that a mixed state is Schmidt-correlated if and only if its spectral decomposition consists of a set of pure eigenstates which can be simultaneously diagonalized in weak Schmidt decomposition, i.e. allowing for complex-valued diagonal entries. For such states, the separability is reduced to the orthogonality conditions of the vectors consisting of diagonal entries associated to the eigenstates, which is surprisingly related to the so-called complex Hadamard matrices. Using the Hadamard matrices, we provide a variety of generalized maximal entangled Bell bases.

Geometric analysis aspects of infinite semiplanar graphs with nonnegative curvature

In the present paper, we apply Alexandrov geometry methods to study geometric analysis aspects of infinite semiplanar graphs with nonnegative combinatorial curvature in the sense of Higuchi. We obtain the metric classification of these graphs and construct the graphs embedded in the projective plane minus one point. Moreover, we show the volume doubling property and the Poincaré inequality on such graphs. The quadratic volume growth of these graphs implies the parabolicity. In addition, we prove the polynomial growth harmonic function theorem analogous to the case of Riemannian manifolds.

Geometric analysis aspects of infinite semiplanar graphs with nonnegative curvature II

In a previous paper Hua-Jost-Liu, we have applied Alexandrov geometry methods to study infinite semiplanar graphs with nonnegative combinatorial curvature. We proved the weak relative volume comparison and the Poincaré inequality on these graphs to obtain an dimension estimate of polynomial growth harmonic functions which is asymptotically quadratic in the growth rate. In the present paper, instead of using volume comparison on graphs, we directly argue on Alexandrov spaces to obtain the optimal dimension estimate of polynomial growth harmonic functions on graphs which is actually linear in the growth rate. From a harmonic function on the graph, we construct a function on the corresponing Alexandrov surface that is not necessarily harmonic, but satisfies crucial estimates.

Harmonic functions of general graph Laplacians

We study harmonic functions on general weighted graphs which allow for a compatible intrinsic metric. We prove an $L^{p}$ Liouville type theorem which is a quantitative integral $L^{p}$ estimate of harmonic functions analogous to Karp's theorem for Riemannian manifolds. As corollaries we obtain Yau's $L^{p}$-Liouville type theorem on graphs, identify the domain of the generator of the semigroup on $L^{p}$ and get a criterion for recurrence. As a side product, we show an analogue of Yau's $L^{p}$ Caccioppoli inequality. Furthermore, we derive various Liouville type results for harmonic functions on graphs and harmonic maps from graphs into Hadamard spaces.

Polynomial Growth Harmonic Functions on Finitely Generated Abelian Groups

In the present paper, we develop geometric analytic techniques on Cayley graphs of finitely generated abelian groups to study the polynomial growth harmonic functions. We develop a geometric analytic proof of the classical Heilbronn theorem and the recent Nayar theorem on polynomial growth harmonic functions on lattices $\mathds{Z}^n$ that does not use a representation formula for harmonic functions. We also calculate the precise dimension of the space of polynomial growth harmonic functions on finitely generated abelian groups. While the Cayley graph not only depends on the abelian group, but also on the choice of a generating set, we find that this dimension depends only on the group itself.

Polynomial Growth Harmonic Functions on Groups of Polynomial Volume Growth

We consider harmonic functions of polynomial growth of some order $d$ on Cayley graphs of groups of polynomial volume growth of order $D$ w.r.t. the word metric and prove the optimal estimate for the dimension of the space of such harmonic functions. More precisely, the dimension of this space of harmonic functions is at most of order $d^{D-1}$. As in the already known Riemannian case, this estimate is polynomial in the growth degree. More generally, our techniques also apply to graphs roughly isometric to Cayley graphs of groups of polynomial volume growth.

On the $l^p$ spectrum of Laplacians on graphs

We study the $p$-independence of spectra of Laplace operators on graphs arising from regular Dirichlet forms on discrete spaces. Here, a sufficient criterion is given solely by a uniform subexponential growth condition. Moreover, under a mild assumption on the measure we show a one-sided spectral inclusion without any further assumptions. We study applications to normalized Laplacians including symmetries of the spectrum and a characterization for positivity of the Cheeger constant. Furthermore, we consider Laplacians on planar tessellations for which we relate the spectral $p$-independence to assumptions on the curvature.

The dual Cheeger constant and spectra of infinite graphs

In this article we study the top of the spectrum of the normalized Laplace operator on infinite graphs. We introduce the dual Cheeger constant and show that it controls the top of the spectrum from above and below in a similar way as the Cheeger constant controls the bottom of the spectrum. Moreover, we show that the dual Cheeger constant at infinity can be used to characterize that the essential spectrum of the normalized Laplace operator shrinks to one point.
