Mean-Field Games Under Model Uncertainty

We study discrete-time, finite-state mean-field games (MFGs) under model uncertainty, where agents face ambiguity about the state transition probabilities. Each agent maximizes its expected payoff against the worst-case transitions within an uncertainty set. Unlike in classical MFGs, model uncertainty renders the population distribution flow stochastic. This leads us to consider strategies that depend on both individual states and the realized distribution of the population. Our main results establish the asymptotic relationship between $N$-agent games and MFGs: every MFG equilibrium constitutes an $\varepsilon$-Nash equilibrium for sufficiently large populations, and conversely, limits of $N$-agent equilibria are MFG equilibria. We also prove the existence of equilibria for finite-agent games and construct a solvable mean-field example with closed-form solutions.

Optimal Underreporting and Competitive Equilibrium

This paper develops a dynamic insurance market model comprising two competing insurance companies and a continuum of insureds, and examines the interaction between strategic underreporting by the insureds and competitive pricing between the insurance companies under a Bonus-Malus System (BMS) framework. For the first time in an oligopolistic setting, we establish the existence and uniqueness of the insureds' optimal reporting barrier, as well as its continuous dependence on the BMS premiums. For the 2-class BMS case, we prove the existence of Nash equilibrium premium strategies and conduct an extensive sensitivity analysis on the impact of the model parameters on the equilibrium premiums.

Cone-constrained Monotone Mean-Variance Portfolio Selection Under Diffusion Models

We consider monotone mean-variance (MMV) portfolio selection problems with a conic convex constraint under diffusion models, and their counterpart problems under mean-variance (MV) preferences. We obtain the precommitted optimal strategies to both problems in closed form and find that they coincide, without and with the presence of the conic constraint. This result generalizes the equivalence between MMV and MV preferences from non-constrained cases to a specific constrained case. A comparison analysis reveals that the orthogonality property under the conic convex set is a key to ensuring the equivalence result.

Walle: An End-to-End, General-Purpose, and Large-Scale Production System for Device-Cloud Collaborative Machine Learning

To break the bottlenecks of mainstream cloud-based machine learning (ML) paradigm, we adopt device-cloud collaborative ML and build the first end-to-end and general-purpose system, called Walle, as the foundation. Walle consists of a deployment platform, distributing ML tasks to billion-scale devices in time; a data pipeline, efficiently preparing task input; and a compute container, providing a cross-platform and high-performance execution environment, while facilitating daily task iteration. Specifically, the compute container is based on Mobile Neural Network (MNN), a tensor compute engine along with the data processing and model execution libraries, which are exposed through a refined Python thread-level virtual machine (VM) to support diverse ML tasks and concurrent task execution. The core of MNN is the novel mechanisms of operator decomposition and semi-auto search, sharply reducing the workload in manually optimizing hundreds of operators for tens of hardware backends and further quickly identifying the best backend with runtime optimization for a computation graph. The data pipeline introduces an on-device stream processing framework to enable processing user behavior data at source. The deployment platform releases ML tasks with an efficient push-then-pull method and supports multi-granularity deployment policies. We evaluate Walle in practical e-commerce application scenarios to demonstrate its effectiveness, efficiency, and scalability. Extensive micro-benchmarks also highlight the superior performance of MNN and the Python thread-level VM. Walle has been in large-scale production use in Alibaba, while MNN has been open source with a broad impact in the community.

Mean-Variance Investment and Risk Control Strategies -- A Time-Consistent Approach via A Forward Auxiliary Process

We consider an optimal investment and risk control problem for an insurer under the mean-variance (MV) criterion. By introducing a deterministic auxiliary process defined forward in time, we formulate an alternative time-consistent problem related to the original MV problem, and obtain the optimal strategy and the value function to the new problem in closed-form. We compare our formulation and optimal strategy to those under the precommitment and game-theoretic framework. Numerical studies show that, when the financial market is negatively correlated with the risk process, optimal investment may involve short selling the risky asset and, if that happens, a less risk averse insurer short sells more risky asset.

Optimal Bookmaking

We introduce a general framework for continuous-time betting markets, in which a bookmaker can dynamically control the prices of bets on outcomes of random events. In turn, the prices set by the bookmaker affect the rate or intensity of bets placed by gamblers. The bookmaker seeks a price process that maximizes his expected (utility of) terminal wealth. We obtain explicit solutions or characterizations to the bookmaker's optimal bookmaking problem in various interesting models.

MNN: A Universal and Efficient Inference Engine

Deploying deep learning models on mobile devices draws more and more attention recently. However, designing an efficient inference engine on devices is under the great challenges of model compatibility, device diversity, and resource limitation. To deal with these challenges, we propose Mobile Neural Network (MNN), a universal and efficient inference engine tailored to mobile applications. In this paper, the contributions of MNN include: (1) presenting a mechanism called pre-inference that manages to conduct runtime optimization; (2)deliveringthorough kernel optimization on operators to achieve optimal computation performance; (3) introducing backend abstraction module which enables hybrid scheduling and keeps the engine lightweight. Extensive benchmark experiments demonstrate that MNN performs favorably against other popular lightweight deep learning frameworks. MNN is available to public at: https://github.com/alibaba/MNN.

Transition metal nitride thin films deposited at CMOS compatible temperatures for tunable optoelectronic and plasmonic devices

Transition metal nitrides have received significant interest for use within plasmonic and optoelectronic devices. However, deposition temperature remains a significant barrier to the integration of transition metal nitrides as plasmonic materials within CMOS fabrication processes. Binary, ternary and layered transition metal nitride thin films based on titanium and niobium nitride are deposited using High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HIPIMS). The increased plasma densities achieved in the HIPIMS process allow high quality plasmonic thin films to be deposited at CMOS compatible temperatures of less than 300°C. Thin films are deposited on a range of industrially relevant substrates and display tunable plasma frequencies in the ultraviolet to visible spectral ranges. The thin film quality, combined with the scalability of the deposition process, indicates that HIPIMS deposition of nitride films is an industrially viable technique and can pave the way towards the fabrication of next generation plasmonic and optoelectronic devices.

Optimal Investment with Transaction Costs under Cumulative Prospect Theory in Discrete Time

We study optimal investment problems under the framework of cumulative prospect theory (CPT). A CPT investor makes investment decisions in a single-period financial market with transaction costs. The objective is to seek the optimal investment strategy that maximizes the prospect value of the investor's final wealth. We obtain the optimal investment strategy explicitly in two examples. An economic analysis is conducted to investigate the impact of the transaction costs and risk aversion on the optimal investment strategy.

Tunable, Low Optical Loss Strontium Molybdate Thin Films for Plasmonic Applications

Strontium molybdate (SrMoO3) thin films are shown to exhibit plasmonic behaviour with a zero crossover wavelength of the real part of the dielectric permittivity tunable between 600 and 950 nm (2.05 eV and 1.31 eV). The films are grown epitaxially on strontium titanate (SrTiO3), magnesium oxide (MgO), and lanthanum aluminate (LaAlO3) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. SrMoO3 is shown to have optical losses lower than those of gold at the point at which the real part of the dielectric permittivity is equal to -2, while possessing low electrical resistivity of 100E-6 Ohm cm at room temperature. Spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements reveal that SrMoO3 shows plasmonic behaviour, moreover we demonstrate that the epsilon near zero (ENZ) wavelength is tunable by engineering the residual strain in the films. The relatively broadband ENZ behaviour observed in SrMoO3 demonstrates its potential suitability for transformation optics along with plasmonic applications in the visible to near infrared spectral range.

Explicit Solutions of Optimal Consumption, Investment and Insurance Problem with Regime Switching

We consider an investor who wants to select her/his optimal consumption, investment and insurance policies. Motivated by new insurance products, we allow not only the financial marke but also the insurable loss to depend on the regime of the economy. The objective of the investor is to maximize her/his expected total discounted utility of consumption over an infinite time horizon. For the case of hyperbolic absolute risk aversion (HARA) utility functions, we obtain the first explicit solutions for simultaneous optimal consumption, investment, and insurance problems when there is regime switching. We determine that the optimal insurance contract is either no-insurance or deductible insurance, and calculate when it is optimal to buy insurance. The optimal policy depends strongly on the regime of the economy. Through an economic analysis, we calculate the advantage of buying insurance.

Optimal Investment and Risk Control Problem for an Insurer: Expected Utility Maximization

Motivated by the AIG bailout case in the financial crisis of 2007-2008, we consider an insurer who wants to maximize the expected utility of the terminal wealth by selecting optimal investment and risk control strategies. The insurer's risk process is modelled by a jump-diffusion process and is negatively correlated with the capital gains in the financial market. We obtain explicit solution to optimal strategies for various utility functions.
