Deep Machine Learning Reconstructing Lattice Topology with Strong Thermal Fluctuations

Applying artificial intelligence to scientific problems (namely AI for science) is currently under hot debate. However, the scientific problems differ much from the conventional ones with images, texts, and etc., where new challenges emerges with the unbalanced scientific data and complicated effects from the physical setups. In this work, we demonstrate the validity of the deep convolutional neural network (CNN) on reconstructing the lattice topology (i.e., spin connectivities) in the presence of strong thermal fluctuations and unbalanced data. Taking the kinetic Ising model with Glauber dynamics as an example, the CNN maps the time-dependent local magnetic momenta (a single-node feature) evolved from a specific initial configuration (dubbed as an evolution instance) to the probabilities of the presences of the possible couplings. Our scheme distinguishes from the previous ones that might require the knowledge on the node dynamics, the responses from perturbations, or the evaluations of statistic quantities such as correlations or transfer entropy from many evolution instances. The fine tuning avoids the "barren plateau" caused by the strong thermal fluctuations at high temperatures. Accurate reconstructions can be made where the thermal fluctuations dominate over the correlations and consequently the statistic methods in general fail. Meanwhile, we unveil the generalization of CNN on dealing with the instances evolved from the unlearnt initial spin configurations and those with the unlearnt lattices. We raise an open question on the learning with unbalanced data in the nearly "double-exponentially" large sample space.

Topological spin textures in chiral magnets on the honeycomb lattice with magnetic fields

Topological spin textures, like skyrmions, have significant potential for spintronics applications. The main purpose of this work is to study further the topological spin textures on the discrete lattice with magnetic fields. In this work, we study a classical rotated Heisenberg model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, bond-dependent anisotropy and easy-axis anisotropy on the honeycomb lattice via Monte Carlo simulations. We mainly focus on phase diagrams with magnetic fields, especially on the non-trivial phases only existing with fields. The results demonstrate the emergence of field-induced incommensurate skyrmion superlattice including mixed skyrmion-bimeron states, ferromagnetic star, vortex and z-vortex superlattice. We systematically analyze structures of these topological spin textures through spin configurations, structure factors, topological charge and vector chirality. We hope that our results could be useful for the identification of topological phases experimentally.

Chiral domain wall dynamics in magnetic heterostructures with bulk Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions

In this work, dynamics of chiral domain walls in long and narrow magnetic heterostructures based on non-centrosymmetric chiral magnets with bulk Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is systematically investigated. The driving forces can be out-of-plane magnetic fields and in-plane currents, correspondingly both steady and precessional flows are considered. Their dividing points (the Walker critical field and current density) are obtained as functions of bulk DMI strength ($D_{\mathrm{b}}$) and the ratio ($κ$) of total (crystalline plus shape) anisotropy in the hard axis over that in the easy one. When far beyond Walker breakdown, the dependence curve of wall velocity on external in-plane bias field takes parabolic shape around the compensation point where the total in-plane field disappears. The center shift is determined by $D_{\mathrm{b}}$, $κ$, and the wall's topological charge, thus can be used to measure the bulk DMI strength in chiral magnets.

Comprehensive study of the global phase diagram in the triangular $J$-$K$-$Γ$ model

The celebrated Kitaev honeycomb model provides an analytically tractable example with an exact quantum spin liquid ground state. While in real materials, other types of interactions besides the Kitaev coupling ($K$) are present, such as the Heisenberg ($J$) and symmetric off-diagonal ($Γ$) terms, and these interactions can also be generalized to a triangular lattice. Here, we carry out a comprehensive study of the $J$-$K$-$Γ$ model on the triangular lattice covering the full parameters region, using the combination of the exact diagonalization, classical Monte Carlo and analytic methods. In the HK limit ($Γ=0$), we find five quantum phases which are quite similar to their classical counterparts. Among them, the stripe-A and dual Néel phase are robust against the $Γ$ term, in particular the stripe-A extends to the region connecting the $K=-1$ and $K=1$ for $Γ<0$. Though the 120$^\circ$ Néel phase also extends to a finite $Γ$, its region has been largely reduced compared to the previous classical result. Interestingly, the ferromagnetic (dubbed as FM-A) phase and the stripe-B phase are unstable in response to an infinitesimal $Γ$ interaction. Moreover, we find five new phases for $Γ\ne 0$ which are elaborated by both the quantum and classical numerical methods. Part of the space previously identified as 120$^\circ$ Néel phase in the classical study is found to give way to the modulated stripe phase. Depending on the sign of the $Γ$, the FM-A phase transits into the FM-B ($Γ>0$) and FM-C ($Γ<0$) phase with different spin orientations, and the stripe-B phase transits into the stripe-C ($Γ>0$) and stripe-A ($Γ<0$). Around the positive $Γ$ point, due to the interplay of the Heisenberg, Kiatev and $Γ$ interactions, we find a possible quantum spin liquid with a continuum in spin excitations.

Surface geometry determined temperature-dependent band structure evolutions in organic halide perovskite single crystals

In this study, different electronic structure evolutions of perovskite single crystals are found via angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES): (i) unchanged top valence band (VB) dispersions under different temperatures can be found in the CH3NH3PbI3, (ii) phase transitions induced the evolution of top VB dispersions, and even a top VB splitting with Rashba effects can be observed in the CH3NH3PbBr3. Combined with low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), metastable atom electron spectroscopy (MAES), and DFT calculation, we confirm different band structure evolutions observed in these two perovskite single crystals are originated from the cleaved top surface layers, where the different surface geometries with CH3NH3+-I in CH3NH3PbI3 and Pb-Br in CH3NH3PbBr3 are responsible for finding band dispersion change and appearing of the Rashba-type splitting. Such findings suggest that the top surface layer in organic halide perovskites should be carefully considered to create functional interfaces for developing perovskite devices.

Effective Hamiltonian for superconducting Ni oxides Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$

We derive the effective single-band Hamiltonian in the flat NiO$_2$ planes for nickelate compounds Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$. We first implement the first-principles calculation to study electronic structures of nickelates using the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof hybrid density functional and derive a three-band Hubbard model for Ni-O $pdσ$ bands of Ni$^+$ $3d_{x^2-y^2}$ and O$^{2-}$ $2p_{x/y}$ orbitals in the NiO$_2$ planes. To obtain the effective one-band $t$-$t'$-$J$ model Hamiltonian, we perform the exact diagonalization of the three-band Hubbard model for the Ni$_5$O$_{16}$ cluster and map the low-energy spectra onto the effective one-band models. We find that the undoped NiO$_2$ plane is a Hubbard Mott insulator, and the doped holes primarily locate on Ni sites. The physics of the NiO$_2$ plane is a doped Mott insulator, described by the one-band $t$-$t'$-$J$ model with $t=265$~meV, $t'=-21$~meV and $J=28.6$~meV. We also discuss the electronic structure for the "self-doping" effect and heavy fermion behavior of electron pockets of Nd$^{3+}$ $5d$ character in Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$.

Intrinsic long range antiferromagnetic coupling in dilutely V doped CuInTe$_2$

Despite the various magnetic orders mediated by superexchange mechanism, the existence of a long range antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling is unknown. Based on DFT calculations, we discovered an intrinsic long range AFM coupling in V doped CuInTe$_2$. The AFM coupling is mainly due to the $p-d$ coupling and electron redistribution along the interacting chains. The relatively small energy difference between $p$ and $d$ orbitals and the small energy difference between d orbitals of the dopants and that of stepping stone sites can enhance the stability of this AFM configuration. A multi-bands Hubbard model was proposed to provide fundamental understanding to the long range AFM coupling in chalcopyrite diluted magnetic semiconductors(DMS).

Magnetic Raman continuum in single crystalline H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$

Recently H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ has been reported as a spin-orbital entangled quantum spin liquid (QSL) [K. Kitagawa et al., Nature {\bf 554}, 341 (2018)], albeit its connection to Kitaev QSL has not been yet identified. To unveil the related Kitaev physics, we perform the first Raman spectroscopy studies on single crystalline H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ samples. We implement a soft chemical replacement of Li$^+$ with H$^+$ from $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ single crystals to synthesize the single crystal samples of the iridate second generation H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$. The Raman spectroscopy can be used to diagnose the QSL state since the magnetic Raman continuum arises from a process involving pairs of fractionalized Majorana fermionic excitation in a pure Kitaev model. We observe a broad dome-shaped magnetic continuum in H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$, in line with theoretical expectations for the two-spin process in the Kitaev QSL. Our results establish the close connection to the Kitaev QSL physics in H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$.

Quantum phase transition, universality and scaling behaviors in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic competing interactions on honeycomb lattice

The quantum phase transition, scaling behaviors, and thermodynamics in the spin-1/2 quantum Heisenberg model with antiferromagnetic coupling $J>0$ in armchair direction and ferromagnetic interaction $J'<0$ in zigzag direction on a honeycomb lattice are systematically studied using the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. By calculating the Binder ratio $Q_{2}$ and spin stiffness $ρ$ in two directions for various coupling ratio $α=J'/J$ under different lattice sizes, we found that a quantum phase transition from the dimerized phase to the stripe phase occurs at the quantum critical point $α_c=-0.93$. Through the finite-size scaling analysis on $Q_{2}$, $ρ_{x}$ and $ρ_{y}$, we determined the critical exponent related to the correlation length $ν$ to be 0.7212(8), implying that this transition falls into a classical Heisenberg O(3) universality. A zero magnetization plateau is observed in the dimerized phase, whose width decreases with increasing $α$. A phase diagram in the coupling ratio $α$-magnetic field $h$ plane is obtained, where four phases, including dimerized, stripe, canted stripe and polarized phases are identified. It is also unveiled that the temperature dependence of the specific heat $C(T)$ for different $α$'s intersects precisely at one point, similar to that of liquid $^{3}$He under different pressures and several magnetic compounds under various magnetic fields. The scaling behaviors of $Q_{2}$, $ρ$ and $C(T)$ are carefully analyzed. The susceptibility is well compared with the experimental data to give the magnetic parameters of both compounds.

Numerical study of the depinning transition of a ferromagnetic magnetic domain wall in films

We report first principle numerical study of domain wall (DW) depinning in two-dimensional magnetic film, which is modeled by 2D random-field Ising system with the dipole-dipole interaction. We observe nonconventional activation-type motion of DW and reveal its fractal structure of DW near the depinning transition. We determine scaling functions describing critical dynamics near the transition and obtain universal exponents establishing connection between thermal softening of pinning potential and critical dynamics. We observe that tuning the strength of the dipole-dipole interaction switches DW dynamics between two different universality classes corresponding to two distinct dynamic regimes, motion in the random potential and that in the random force.

Honeycomb Heisenberg Spin Ladder: Unusual Ground State and Thermodynamic Properties

The unusual ground state and thermodynamic properties of spin-1/2 two-leg honeycomb (HC) spin ladder are systematically studied by jointly utilizing various analytical and numerical methods. The HC spin ladder is found to exhibit behaviors dramatically different from those of the conventional square spin ladder. A strong relevant term nJ and a half saturation magnetization plateau that can be attributed to the formation of diluted dimer states are observed in the HC ladder, both of which are absent in the square ladder. The ground state phase diagram of the HC spin ladder is identified, and the thermodynamic properties of the specific heat and susceptibility for different couplings are thoroughly explored, where two kinds of excitations are unveiled. The distinct Wilson ratios for both spin ladders at the lower critical fields are also obtained. Our calculated result is well fitted to the experimental data of the two-leg HC spin ladder compound [Cu2L1(N3)4]n.

Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition and reentrance in an anisotropic 3-state Potts model on the generalized Kagome lattice

The unusual reentrant phenomenon is observed in the anisotropic 3-state Potts model on a gen- eralized Kagome lattice. By employing the linearized tensor renormalization group method, we find that the reentrance can appear in the region not only under a partial ordered phase as commonly known but also a phase without a local order parameter, which is uncovered to fall into the uni- versality of the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) type. The region of the reentrance depends strongly on the ratios of the next nearest couplings α = J2 /|J1 | and β = J3 /|J1 |. The phase diagrams in the plane of temperature versus β for different α are obtained. Through massive calculations, it is also revealed that the quasi-entanglement entropy can be used to accurately detect the KT transition temperature.

Theory of Network Contractor Dynamics for Exploring Thermodynamic Properties of Two-dimensional Quantum Lattice Models

Based on the tensor network state representation, we develop a nonlinear dynamic theory coined as network contractor dynamics (NCD) to explore the thermodynamic properties of two-dimensional quantum lattice models. By invoking the rank-$1$ decomposition in the multi-linear algebra, the NCD scheme makes the contraction of the tensor network of the partition function be realized through a contraction of a local tensor cluster with vectors on its boundary. An imaginary-time-sweep algorithm for implementation of the NCD method is proposed for practical numerical simulations. We benchmark the NCD scheme on the square Ising model, which shows a great accuracy. Besides, the results on the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on honeycomb lattice are disclosed in good agreement with the quantum Monte Carlo calculations. The quasi-entanglement entropy $S$, Lyapunov exponent $I^{lya}$ and loop character $I^{loop}$ are introduced within the dynamic scheme, which are found to display the ``nonlocality" near the critical point, and can be applied to determine the thermodynamic phase transitions of both classical and quantum systems.

Optimized Decimation of Tensor Networks with Super-orthogonalization for Two-Dimensional Quantum Lattice Models

A novel algorithm based on the optimized decimation of tensor networks with super-orthogonalization (ODTNS) that can be applied to simulate efficiently and accurately not only the thermodynamic but also the ground state properties of two-dimensional (2D) quantum lattice models is proposed. By transforming the 2D quantum model into a three-dimensional (3D) closed tensor network (TN) comprised of the tensor product density operator and a 3D brick-wall TN, the free energy of the system can be calculated with the imaginary time evolution, in which the network Tucker decomposition is suggested for the first time to obtain the optimal lower-dimensional approximation on the bond space by transforming the TN into a super-orthogonal form. The efficiency and accuracy of this algorithm are testified, which are fairly comparable with the quantum Monte Carlo calculations. Besides, the present ODTNS scheme can also be applicable to the 2D frustrated quantum spin models with nice efficiency.

Global phase diagram of three-dimensional extended Boson Hubbard model - a continuous time Quantum Monte Carlo study

We present the global phase diagram of the extended boson Hubbard model on a simple cubic lattice by quantum Monte Carlo simulation with worm update algorithm. Four kinds of phases are supported by this model, including superfluid, supersolid, Mott, and charge density wave (CDW) states, which are identified in the phase diagram of chemical potential $μ$ versus nearest neighbor interaction V . By changing the chemical potential, a continuous transition is found from the Mott phase to a superfluid phase without breaking the translational symmetry. For an insulating CDW state, adding particles to it gives rise to a continuous transition to a supersolid phase, while removing particles usually leads to a first-order one to either supersolid or superfluid phase. By tuning the nearest neighbor interaction, one can realize the transition between two insulating phases, Mott and CDW with the same particle density, which turns out to be of the first-order. We also demonstrate that a supersolid phase with average particle density less than 1/2 can exist in a small region of $μ$ - V phase diagram.

Linearized Tensor Renormalization Group Algorithm for Thermodynamics of Quantum Lattice Models

A linearized tensor renormalization group (LTRG) algorithm is proposed to calculate the thermodynamic properties of one-dimensional quantum lattice models, that is incorporated with the infinite time-evolving block decimation technique, and allows for treating directly the two-dimensional transfer-matrix tensor network. To illustrate its feasibility, the thermodynamic quantities of the quantum XY spin chain are calculated accurately by the LTRG, and the precision is shown to be comparable with (even better than) the transfer matrix renormalization group (TMRG) method. Unlike the TMRG scheme that can only deal with the infinite chains, the present LTRG algorithm could treat both finite and infinite systems, and may be readily extended to boson and fermion quantum lattice models.

Low-energy properties of anisotropic two-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg models in staggered magnetic fields

We present a systematic study of the anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model in staggered magnetic fields in two dimensions (2D). To mimic real materials, we consider a system of coupled, antiferromagnetic chains, whose interchain interaction can be either ferro- or antiferromagnetic. When the staggered field is commensurate with the magnetic interactions, an energy gap opens immediately and follows a power law as a function of the applied field, similar to the situation in 1D. When the field competes with the interactions, a quantum phase transition (QPT) occurs from a gapless, magnetically ordered phase at low fields to a gapped, disordered regime. We use a continuous-time Monte Carlo method to compute the staggered moment of the ordered phases and the spin gap of the disordered phases. We deduce the phase diagrams as functions of the anisotropy ratio and the applied field, and calculate the scaling behavior of the models in both quantities. We show that in the competitive case, the staggered field acts to maintain a regime of quasi-1D behavior around the QPT, and we discuss as a consequence the nature of the crossover from 1D to 2D physics.
