Genus three curves and 56 nodal sextic surfaces

Catanese and Tonoli showed that the maximal cardinality for an even set of nodes on a sextic surface is 56 and they constructed such nodal surfaces. In this paper we give an alternative, rather simple, construction for these surfaces starting from a non-hyperelliptic genus three curve. We illustrate our method by giving explicitly the equation of such a sextic surface starting from the Klein curve.

On intermediate Jacobians of cubic threefolds admitting an automorphism of order five

Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero containing a primitive fifth root of unity. Let $X/k$ be a smooth cubic threefold with an automorphism of order five, then we observe that over a finite extension of the field actually the dihedral group $D_5$ is a subgroup of ${\rm Aut}(X)$. We find that the intermediate Jacobian $J(X)$ of $X$ is isogenous to the product of an elliptic curve $E$ and the self-product of an abelian surface $B$ with real multiplication by $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{5})$. We give explicit models of some algebraic curves related to the construction of $J(X)$ as a Prym variety. This includes a two parameter family of curves of genus 2 whose Jacobians are isogenous to the abelian surfaces mentioned as above.

Abelian surfaces with an automorphism and quaternionic multiplication

We construct one dimensional families of Abelian surfaces with quaternionic multiplication which also have an automorphism of order three or four. Using Barth's description of the moduli space of (2,4)-polarized Abelian surfaces, we find the Shimura curve parametrizing these Abelian surfaces in a specific case. We explicitly relate these surfaces to the Jacobians of genus two curves studied by Hashimoto and Murabayashi. We also describe a (Humbert) surface in Barth's moduli space which parametrizes Abelian surfaces with real multiplication by Z[\sqrt{2}].

A Picard modular fourfold and the Weyl group W(E_6)

We study the geometry of a Picard modular fourfold which parametrizes abelian fourfolds of Weil type for the field of cube roots of unity. We find a projective model of this fourfold as a singular, degree ten, hypersurface X in projective 5-space. The Weyl group W(E_6) acts on X and we provide an explicit description of this action. Moreover, we describe various special subvarieties as well as the boundary of X.

Some equations for the universal Kummer variety

We give a method to find quartic Heisenberg invariant equations for Kummer varieties and we give some explicit examples. From these equations for g-dimensional Kummer varieties one obtains equations for the moduli space of g+1-dimensional Kummer varieties. These again define modular forms which vanish on the period matrices of Riemann surfaces. The modular forms that we find for g=5 appear to be new and of lower weight than known before.

Lines on the Dwork Pencil of Quintic Threefolds

We present an explicit parametrization of the families of lines of the Dwork pencil of quintic threefolds. This gives rise to isomorphic curves which parametrize the lines. These curves are 125:1 covers of certain genus six curves. These genus six curves are first presented as curves in P^1*P^1 that have three nodes. It is natural to blow up P^1*P^1 in the three points corresponding to the nodes in order to produce smooth curves. The result of blowing up P^1*P^1 in three points is the quintic del Pezzo surface dP_5, whose automorphism group is the permutation group S_5, which is also a symmetry of the pair of genus six curves. The subgroup A_5, of even permutations, is an automorphism of each curve, while the odd permutations interchange the two curves. The ten exceptional curves of dP_5 each intersect each of the genus six curves in two points corresponding to van Geemen lines. We find, in this way, what should have anticipated from the outset, that the genus six curves are the curves of the Wiman pencil. We consider the family of lines also for the cases that the manifolds of the Dwork pencil become singular. For the conifold the genus six curves develop six nodes and may be resolved to a P^1. The group A_5 acts on this P^1 and we describe this action.

Multi-Centered Invariants, Plethysm and Grassmannians

Motivated by multi-centered black hole solutions of Maxwell-Einstein theories of (super)gravity in D=4 space-time dimensions, we develop some general methods, that can be used to determine all homogeneous invariant polynomials on the irreducible (SL_h(p,R) x G4)-representation (p,R), where p denotes the number of centers, and SL_h(p,R) is the "horizontal" symmetry of the system, acting upon the indices labelling the centers. The black hole electric and magnetic charges sit in the symplectic representation R of the generalized electric-magnetic (U-)duality group G4. We start with an algebraic approach based on classical invariant theory, using Schur polynomials and the Cauchy formula. Then, we perform a geometric analysis, involving Grassmannians, Pluecker coordinates, and exploiting Bott's Theorem. We focus on non-degenerate groups G4 "of type E7" relevant for (super)gravities whose (vector multiplets') scalar manifold is a symmetric space. In the triality-symmetric stu model of N=2 supergravity, we explicitly construct a basis for the 10 linearly independent degree-12 invariant polynomials of 3-centered black holes.

The Cayley-Oguiso automorphism of positive entropy on a K3 surface

Recently Oguiso showed the existence of K3 surfaces that admit a fixed point free automorphism of positive entropy. The K3 surfaces used by Oguiso have a particular rank two Picard lattice. We show, using results of Beauville, that these surfaces are therefore determinantal quartic surfaces. Long ago, Cayley constructed an automorphism of such determinantal surfaces. We show that Cayley's automorphism coincides with Oguiso's free automorphism. We also exhibit an explicit example of a determinantal quartic whose Picard lattice has exactly rank two and for which we thus have an explicit description of the automorphism.

Two moduli spaces of abelian fourfolds with an automorphism of order five

We find explicit projective models of a compact Shimura curve and of a (non-compact) surface which are the moduli spaces of principally polarised abelian fourfolds with an automorphism of order five. The surface has a 24-nodal canonical model in IP^4 which is the complete intersection of two S_5-invariant cubics. It is dominated by a Hilbert modular surface and we give a modular interpretation for this. We also determine the L-series of these varieties as well as those of several modular covers of the Shimura curve.

A new CY elliptic fibration and tadpole cancellation

Tadpole cancellation in Sen limits in F-theory was recently studied by Aluffi and Esole. We extend their results, generalizing the elliptic fibrations they used and obtaining a new case of universal tadpole cancellation, at least numerically. We could not find an actual Sen limit having the correct brane content, and we argue that such a limit may not exist. We also give a uniform description of the fibration used by Aluffi and Esole as well as a new, simple, fibration which has non-Kodaira type fibers.

Geometry and Arithmetic of Maschke's Calabi-Yau Threefold

Maschke's Calabi-Yau threefold is the double cover of projective three space branched along Maschke's octic surface. This surface is defined by the lowest degree invariant of a certain finite group acting on a four dimensional vector space. Using this group, we show that the middle Betti cohomology group of the threefold decomposes into the direct sum of 150 two-dimensional Hodge substructures. We exhibit one dimensional families of rational curves on the threefold and verify that the associated Abel-Jacobi map is non-trivial. By counting the number of points over finite fields, we determine the rank of the Néron-Severi group of Maschke's surface and the Galois representation on the transcendental lattice of some of its quotients. We also formulate precise conjectures on the modularity of the Galois representations associated to Maschke's threefold and to a genus 33 curve which parametrizes rational curves in the threefold.

Examples of Calabi-Yau threefolds parametrised by Shimura varieties

These are notes from talks of the authors on some explicit examples of families of Calabi-Yau threefolds which are parametrised by a Shimura variety. We briefly review the periods of Calabi-Yau threefolds and we discuss a recent result on Picard-Fuchs equations for threefolds which are hypersurfaces with many automorphisms. Next various examples of families parametrised by Shimura varieties are given. Most of these are due to J.C. Rohde. The examples with an automorphism of order three are given in some detail. We recall that such families do not have maximally unipotent monodromy and that the Shimura varieties in these cases are ball quotients.

From qubits to E7

There is a intriguing relation between quantum information theory and super gravity, discovered by M.J. Duff and S. Ferrara. It relates entanglement measures for qubits to black hole entropy, which in a certain case involves the quartic invariant on the 56-dimensional representation of the Lie group E7. In this paper we recall the relatively straightforward manner in which three-qubits lead to E7, or at least to the Weyl group of E7. We also show how the Fano plane emerges in this context.
