Rank jumps and Multisections of elliptic fibrations on K3 surfaces

We consider the countably many families $\mathcal{L}_d$, $d\in\mathbb{N}_{\geq 2}$, of K3 surfaces admitting an elliptic fibration with positive Mordell--Weil rank. We prove that the elliptic fibrations on the very general member of these families have the potential Mordell--Weil rank jump property for $d\neq 2,3$ and moreover the Mordell--Weil rank jump property for $d\equiv 3\mod 4$, $d\neq 3$. We provide explicit examples and discuss some extensions to subfamilies. The result is based on the geometric interaction between the (potential) Mordell--Weil rank jump property and the presence of special multisections of the fibration.

Elliptic fibrations on covers of the elliptic modular surface of level 5

We consider the K3 surfaces that arise as double covers of the elliptic modular surface of level 5, $R_{5,5}$. Such surfaces have a natural elliptic fibration induced by the fibration on $R_{5,5}$. Moreover, they admit several other elliptic fibrations. We describe such fibrations in terms of linear systems of curves on $R_{5,5}$. This has a major advantage over other methods of classification of elliptic fibrations, namely, a simple algorithm that has as input equations of linear systems of curves in the projective plane yields a Weierstrass equation for each elliptic fibration. We deal in detail with the cases for which the double cover is branched over the two reducible fibers of type $I_5$ and for which it is branched over two smooth fibers, giving a complete list of elliptic fibrations for these two scenarios.

Triple covers of K3 surfaces

We study triple covers of K3 surfaces, following Miranda's theory of triple covers. We relate the geometry of the covering surfaces with the properties of both the branch locus and the Tschirnhausen vector bundle. In particular, we classify Galois triple covers computing numerical invariants of the covering surface and of its minimal model. We provide examples of non Galois triple covers, both in the case in which the Tschirnhausen bundle splits into the sum of two line bundles and in the case in which it is an indecomposable rank 2 vector bundle. We provide a criterion to construct rank 2 vector bundles on a K3 surface $S$ which determine a non-Galois triple cover of $S$. The examples presented are in any admissible Kodaira dimension and in particular we provide the constructions of irregular covers of K3 surfaces and of surfaces with geometrical genus equal to 2 whose transcendental Hodge structure splits in the sum of two Hodge structures of K3 type.

Elliptic fibrations and Kodaira dimensions of Schreieder's varieties

We discuss the birational geometry and the Kodaira dimension of certain varieties previously constructed by Schreieder, proving that in any dimension they admit an elliptic fibration and they are not of general type. The $l$-dimensional variety $Y_n^l$, which is the quotient of the product of a certain curve $C_n$ by itself $l$ times by a group $G\simeq\left(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}\right)^{l-1}$ of automorphisms, was constructed by Schreieder to obtain varieties with prescribed Hodge numbers. If $n=3^c$ Schreieder constructed an explicit smooth birational model of it, and Flapan proved: the Kodaira dimension of this smooth model is 1, if $c>1$; if $l=2$ it is a modular elliptic surface; if $l=3$ it admits a fibration in K3 surfaces. In this paper we generalize these results: without any assumption on $n$ and $l$ we prove that $Y_n^l$ admits many elliptic fibrations and its Kodaira dimension is at most 1. Moreover, if $l=2$ its minimal resolution is a modular elliptic surface, obtained by a base change of order $n$ on a specific extremal rational elliptic surface; if $l\geq 3$ it has a birational model which admits a fibration in K3 surfaces and a fibration in $(l-1)$-dimensional varieties of Kodaira dimension at most 0.

Fields of definition of elliptic fibrations on covers of certain extremal rational elliptic surfaces

We study K3 surfaces over a number field $k$ which are double covers of extremal rational elliptic surfaces. We provide a list of all elliptic fibrations on certain K3 surfaces together with the degree of a field extension over which each genus one fibration is defined and admits a section. We show that the latter depends, in general, on the action of the cover involution on the fibers of the genus 1 fibration.

Calabi--Yau quotients of hyperkähler four-folds

The aim of this paper is to construct Calabi-Yau 4-folds as crepant resolutions of the quotients of a hyperkähler 4-fold $X$ by a non symplectic involution $α$. We first compute the Hodge numbers of a Calabi-Yau constructed in this way in a general setting and then we apply the results to several specific examples of non symplectic involutions, producing Calabi-Yau 4-folds with different Hodge diamonds. Then we restrict ourselves to the case where $X$ is the Hilbert scheme of two points on a K3 surface $S$ and the involution $α$ is induced by a non symplectic involution on the K3 surface. In this case we compare the Calabi-Yau 4-fold $Y_S$, which is the crepant resolution of $X/α$, with the Calabi-Yau 4-fold $Z_S$, constructed from $S$ through the Borcea--Voisin construction. We give several explicit geometrical examples of both these Calabi--Yau 4-folds describing maps related to interesting linear systems as well as a rational $2:1$ map from $Z_S$ to $Y_S$.

Mori Dream Spaces extremal contractions of K3 surfaces

We will give a criterion to assure that an extremal contraction of a K3 surface which is not a Mori Dream Space produces a singular surface which is a Mori Dream Spaces. We list the possible Néron--Severi groups of K3 surfaces with this property and an extra geometric condition such that the Picard number is greater then or equal to 10. We give a detailed description of two geometric examples for which the Picard number of the K3 surface is 3, i.e. the minimal possible in order to have the required property. Moreover we observe that there are infinitely many examples of K3 surfaces with the required property and Picard number equal to 3.

Smooth double covers of K3 surfaces

In this paper we classify the topological invariants of the possible branch loci of a smooth double cover $f:X\rightarrow Y$ of a K3 surface $Y$. We describe some geometric properties of $X$ which depend on the properties of the branch locus. We give explicit examples of surfaces $X$ with Kodaira dimension 1 and 2 obtained as double cover of K3 surfaces and we describe some of them as bidouble cover of rational surfaces. Then, we classify the K3 surfaces which admit smooth double covers $X$ satisfying certain conditions; under these conditions the surface $X$ is of general type, $h^{1,0}(X)=0$ and $h^{2,0}(X)=2$. We discuss the variation of the Hodge structure of $H^2(X,\mathbb{Z})$ for some of these surfaces $X$.

Van Geemen--Sarti involutions and elliptic fibrations on K3 surfaces double cover of $\mathbb{P}^2$

In this paper we classify the elliptic fibrations on K3 surfaces which are the double cover of a blow up of $\mathbb{P}^2$ branched along rational curves and we give equations for many of these elliptic fibrations. Thus we obtain a classification of the van Geemen--Sarti involutions (which are symplectic involutions induced by a translation by a 2-torsion section on an elliptic fibration) on such a surface. Each van Geemen--Sarti involution induces a 2-isogeny between two K3 surfaces, which is described in this paper.

Calabi--Yau 3-folds of Borcea--Voisin type and elliptic fibrations

We consider Calabi--Yau 3-folds of Borcea--Voisin type, i.e. Calabi--Yau 3-folds obtained as crepant resolutions of a quotient $(S\times E)/(α_S\times α_E)$, where $S$ is a K3 surface, $E$ is an elliptic curve, $α_S\in {\rm Aut} (S)$ and $α_E\in {\rm Aut}(E)$ act on the period of $S$ and $E$ respectively with order $n=2,3,4,6$. The case $n=2$ is very classical, the case $n=3$ was recently studied by Rohde, the other cases are less known. First we construct explicitly a crepant resolution, $X$, of $(S\times E)/(α_S\times α_E)$ and we compute its Hodge numbers; some pairs of Hodge numbers we found are new. Then we discuss the presence of maximal automorphisms and of a point with maximal unipotent monodromy for the family of $X$. Finally, we describe the map $\mathcal{E}_n: X \rightarrow S/α_S$ whose generic fiber is isomorphic to $E$.

K3 surfaces with a non-symplectic automorphism and product-quotient surfaces with cyclic groups

We classify all the K3 surfaces which are minimal models of the quotient of the product of two curves $C_1\times C_2$ by the diagonal action of either the group $\Z/p\Z$ or the group $\Z/2p\Z$. These K3 surfaces admit a non-symplectic automorphism of order $p$ induced by an automorphism of one of the curves $C_1$ or $C_2$. We prove that most of the K3 surfaces admitting a non-symplectic automorphism of order $p$ (and in fact a maximal irreducible component of the moduli space of K3 surfaces with a non-symplectic automorphism of order $p$) are obtained in this way.\\ In addition, we show that one can obtain the same set of K3 surfaces under more restrictive assumptions namely one of the two curves, say $C_2$, is isomorphic to a rigid hyperelliptic curve with an automorphism $δ_p$ of order $p$ and the automorphism of the K3 surface is induced by $δ_p$.\\ Finally, we describe the variation of the Hodge structures of the surfaces constructed and we give an equation for some of them.

Kummer surfaces and K3 surfaces with (Z/2Z)^4 symplectic action

In the first part of this paper we give a survey of classical results on Kummer surfaces with Picard number 17 from the point of view of lattice theory. We prove ampleness properties for certain divisors on Kummer surfaces and we use them to describe projective models of Kummer surfaces of (1,d)-polarized Abelian surfaces for d=1,2,3. As a consequence we prove that in these cases the Néron--Severi group can be generated by lines. In the second part of the paper we use Kummer surfaces to obtain results on K3 surfaces with a symplectic action of the group (\Z/2\Z)^4. In particular we describe the possible Néron--Severi groups of the latter in the case that the Picard number is 16, which is the minimal possible. We describe also the Néron--Severi groups of the minimal resolution of the quotient surfaces which have 15 nodes. We extend certain classical results on Kummer surfaces to these families.

The Cayley-Oguiso automorphism of positive entropy on a K3 surface

Recently Oguiso showed the existence of K3 surfaces that admit a fixed point free automorphism of positive entropy. The K3 surfaces used by Oguiso have a particular rank two Picard lattice. We show, using results of Beauville, that these surfaces are therefore determinantal quartic surfaces. Long ago, Cayley constructed an automorphism of such determinantal surfaces. We show that Cayley's automorphism coincides with Oguiso's free automorphism. We also exhibit an explicit example of a determinantal quartic whose Picard lattice has exactly rank two and for which we thus have an explicit description of the automorphism.

A rigid Calabi--Yau 3-fold

The aim of this paper is to analyze some geometric properties of the rigid Calabi--Yau threefold $\mathcal{Z}$ obtained by a quotient of $E^3$, where $E$ is a specific elliptic curve. We describe the cohomology of $\mathcal{Z}$ and give a simple formula for the trilinear form on $Pic(\mathcal{Z})$. We describe some projective models of $\mathcal{Z}$ and relate these to its generalized mirror. A smoothing of a singular model is a Calabi--Yau threefold with small Hodge numbers which was not known before.

Enriques Surfaces - Brauer groups and Kummer structures

This paper develops families of complex Enriques surfaces whose Brauer groups pull back identically to zero on the covering K3 surfaces. Our methods rely on isogenies with Kummer surfaces of product type. We offer both lattice theoretic and geometric constructions. We also sketch how the construction connects to string theory and Picard-Fuchs equations in the context of Enriques Calabi-Yau threefolds.

Examples of Calabi-Yau threefolds parametrised by Shimura varieties

These are notes from talks of the authors on some explicit examples of families of Calabi-Yau threefolds which are parametrised by a Shimura variety. We briefly review the periods of Calabi-Yau threefolds and we discuss a recent result on Picard-Fuchs equations for threefolds which are hypersurfaces with many automorphisms. Next various examples of families parametrised by Shimura varieties are given. Most of these are due to J.C. Rohde. The examples with an automorphism of order three are given in some detail. We recall that such families do not have maximally unipotent monodromy and that the Shimura varieties in these cases are ball quotients.

New families of Calabi-Yau 3-folds without maximal unipotent monodromy

The aim of this paper is to construct families of Calabi--Yau 3-folds without boundary points with maximal unipotent monodromy and to describe the variation of their Hodge structures. In particular five families are constructed. In all these cases the variation of the Hodge structures of the Calabi--Yau 3-folds is basically the variation of the Hodge structures of a family of curves. This allows us to write explicitly the Picard--Fuchs equation for the 1-dimensional families. These Calabi--Yau 3-folds are desingularizations of quotients of the product of a (fixed) elliptic curve and a K3 surface admitting an automorphisms of order 4 (with some particular properties). We show that these K3 surfaces admit an isotrivial elliptic fibration.

On symplectic and non--symplectic automorphisms of K3 surfaces

In this paper we investigate when the generic member of a family of K3 surfaces admitting a non--symplectic automorphism of finite order admits also a symplectic automorphism of the same order. We give a complete answer to this question if the order of the automorphism is a prime number and we provide several examples and partial results otherwise. Moreover we prove that, under certain conditions, a K3 surface admitting a non--symplectic automorphism of prime odd order, $p$, also admits a non--symplectic automorphism of order $2p$. This generalizes a previous result by J. Dillies for $p=3$.

The dihedral group $\Dh_5$ as group of symplectic automorphisms on K3 surfaces

We prove that if a K3 surface $X$ admits $\Z/5\Z$ as group of symplectic automorphisms, then it actually admits $\Dh_5$ as group of symplectic automorphisms. The orthogonal complement to the $\Dh_5$-invariants in the second cohomology group of $X$ is a rank 16 lattice, $L$. It is known that $L$ does not depend on $X$: we prove that it is isometric to a lattice recently described by R. L. Griess Jr. and C. H. Lam. We also give an elementary construction of $L$.
