Black hole attractors and U(1) Fayet-Iliopoulos gaugings: analysis and classification

We classify the critical points of the effective black hole potential which governs the attractor mechanism taking place at the horizon of static dyonic extremal black holes in $\mathcal{N}=2$, $D=4$ Maxwell-Einstein supergravity with $U(1)$ Fayet-Iliopoulos gaugings. We use a manifestly symplectic covariant formalism, and we consider both spherical and hyperbolic horizons, recognizing the relevant sub-classes to which some representative examples belong. We also exploit projective special Kähler geometry of vector multiplets scalar manifolds, the $U$-duality-invariant quartic structure (and 2-polarizations thereof) in order to retrieve and generalize various expressions of the entropy of asymptotically AdS$_{4}$ BPS black holes, in the cases in which the scalar manifolds are symmetric spaces. Finally, we present a novel static extremal black hole solution to the $STU$ model, in which the dilaton interpolates between an hyperbolic near-horizon geometry and AdS$_{4}$ at infinity.

Re-weighting dark matter in disc galaxies: a new general relativistic observational test

A recent analysis of data from the ESA Gaia mission demonstrated that the kinematics of stars in the Milky Way can be modelled without invoking the presence of dark matter whatsoever. Indeed, the higher-than-Keplerian velocities observed in outer stars can be ascribed to the properties of the general relativistic (GR) metric assumed to describe the Galaxy. Here we generalize the concept, and derive the most general exact GR model for a stationary axi-symmetric dynamically cold dust structure. We explicitly show how deviations from the commonly adopted Newtonian dynamics are indeed manifest even at low velocities and low densities. We provide for the first time a detailed description of the frequency shift experienced by photons travelling from any emission site within an external disc galaxy to the observer, relating the outcome of the shift measurement to the gravitational properties of the galaxy. Finally, we devise a novel, groundbreaking observational test potentially able to fully characterize the GR metric under the minimal set of assumptions mentioned above. The proposed experiment exploits the effects non-diagonal GR terms have on the frequency shift of photons, ultimately providing a test to evaluate whether dark matter is actually required by disc galaxy kinematics.

The Universal de Rham/Spencer Double Complex on a Supermanifold

The universal Spencer and de Rham complexes of sheaves over a smooth or analytical manifold are well known to play a basic role in the theory of $\mathcal{D}$-modules. In this article we consider a double complex of sheaves generalizing both complexes for an arbitrary supermanifold, and we use it to unify the notions of differential and integral forms on real, complex and algebraic supermanifolds. The associated spectral sequences give the de Rham complex of differential forms and the complex of integral forms at page one. For real and complex supermanifolds both spectral sequences converge at page two to the locally constant sheaf. We use this fact to show that the cohomology of differential forms is isomorphic to the cohomology of integral forms, and they both compute the de Rham cohomology of the reduced manifold. Furthermore, we show that, in contrast with the case of ordinary complex manifolds, the Hodge-to-de Rham (or Frölicher) spectral sequence of supermanifolds with Kähler reduced manifold does not converge in general at page one.

Analytic multi-Baryonic solutions in the SU(N)-Skyrme model at finite density

We construct explicit analytic solutions of the $SU(N)$-Skyrme model (for generic $N$) suitable to describe different phases of nuclear pasta at finite volume in $(3+1)$ dimensions. The first type are crystals of Baryonic tubes (nuclear spaghetti) while the second type are smooth Baryonic layers (nuclear lasagna). Both, the ansatz for the spaghetti and the ansatz for the lasagna phases, reduce the complete set of Skyrme field equations to just one integrable equation for the profile within sectors of arbitrary high topological charge. We compute explicitly the total energy of both configurations in terms of the flavor number, the density and the Baryonic charge. Remarkably, our analytic results allow to compare explicitly the physical properties of nuclear spaghetti and lasagna phases. Our construction shows explicitly that, at lower densities, configurations with $N=2$ light flavors are favored while, at higher densities, configurations with $N=3$ are favored. Our construction also proves that in the high density regime (but still well within the range of validity of the Skyrme model) the lasagna configurations are favored while at low density the spaghetti configurations are favored. Moreover, the integrability property of the present configurations is not spoiled by the inclusion of the subleading corrections to the Skyrme model arising in the 't Hooft expansion. Finally, we briefly discuss the large $N$ limit of our configurations.

Towards a full general relativistic approach to galaxies

We analyze the dynamics of a single spiral galaxy from a general relativistic viewpoint. We employ the known family of stationary axially-symmetric solutions to Einstein gravity coupled with dust in order to model the halo external to the bulge. In particular, we generalize the known results of Balasin and Grumiller, relaxing the condition of co-rotation, thus including non co-rotating dust. This further highlights the discrepancy between Newtonian theory of gravity and general relativity at low velocities and energy densities. We investigate the role of dragging in simulating dark matter effects. In particular, we show that non co-rotance further reduce the amount of energy density required to explain the rotation curves for spiral galaxies.

Analytic SU(N) Skyrmions at finite Baryon density

We construct analytic (3+1)-dimensional Skyrmions living at finite Baryon density in the SU(N) Skyrme model that are not trivial embeddings of SU(2) into SU(N). We used Euler angles decomposition for arbitrary N and the generalized hedgehog Ansatz at finite Baryon density. The Skyrmions of high topological charge that we find represent smooth Baryonic layers whose properties can be computed explicitly. In particular, we determine the energy to Baryon charge ratio for any N showing the smoothness of the large N limit. The closeness to the BPS bound of these configurations can also be analyzed. The energy density profiles of these finite density Skyrmions have \textit{lasagna-like} shape in agreement with recent experimental findings. The shear modulus can be precisely estimated as well and our analytical result is close to recent numerical studies in the literature.

Gravitational waves, 100 years later

We present a short communication on the recent direct measurements of gravitational waves, made possible by the joint efforts of the LIGO and the Virgo projects. These notes are devoted to a broad audience. In the first part we will present the basic ideas of the theory of relativity, leading to the prediction of the existence of gravitational waves. The second part is devoted to present the main results and consequences of the discovery.

Optical theorem and effective action: new proofs of old results in QFT

A new proof of the optical theorem at all orders is presented. Although the theorem is a well-known result in Quantum Field Theory, our proof is interesting because it is particularly simple. Indeed, the theorem is a direct consequence of the pole-ology formalism discussed in Weinberg's Cambridge books. We also discuss a new proof of the standard result concerning the effective action as generating functional of 1PI contributions.

Duality invariance in Fayet-Iliopoulos gauged supergravity

We propose a geometric method to study the residual symmetries in $N=2$, $d=4$ $\text{U}(1)$ Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) gauged supergravity. It essentially involves the stabilization of the symplectic vector of gauge couplings (FI parameters) under the action of the U-duality symmetry of the ungauged theory. In particular we are interested in those transformations that act non-trivially on the solutions and produce scalar hair and dyonic black holes from a given seed. We illustrate the procedure for finding this group in general and then show how it works in some specific models. For the prepotential $F=-iX^0X^1$, we use our method to add one more parameter to the rotating Chow-Compère solution, representing scalar hair.

Scattering and delay time for 1D asymmetric potentials: the step-linear and the step-exponential cases

We analyze the quantum-mechanical behavior of a system described by a one-dimensional asymmetric potential constituted by a step plus (i) a linear barrier or (ii) an exponential barrier. We solve the energy eigenvalue equation by means of the integral representation method, classifying the independent solutions as equivalence classes of homotopic paths in the complex plane. We discuss the structure of the bound states as function of the height U_0 of the step and we study the propagation of a sharp-peaked wave packet reflected by the barrier. For both the linear and the exponential barrier we provide an explicit formula for the delay time τ(E) as a function of the peak energy E. We display the resonant behavior of τ(E) at energies close to U_0. By analyzing the asymptotic behavior for large energies of the eigenfunctions of the continuous spectrum we also show that, as expected, τ(E) approaches the classical value for E -> \infty, thus diverging for the step-linear case and vanishing for the step-exponential one.

Conformal structure of the Schwarzschild black hole

We show that the scalar wave equation at low frequencies in the Schwarzschild geometry enjoys a hidden SL(2,R) invariance, which is not inherited from an underlying symmetry of the spacetime itself. Contrary to what happens for Kerr black holes, the vector fields generating the SL(2,R) are globally defined. Furthermore, it turns out that under an SU(2,1) Kinnersley transformation, which maps the Schwarzschild solution into the near horizon limit AdS_2 x S^2 of the extremal Reissner-Nordstr"om black hole (with the same entropy), the Schwarzschild hidden symmetry generators become exactly the isometries of the AdS_2 factor. Finally, we use the SL(2,R) symmetry to determine algebraically the quasinormal frequencies of the Schwarzschild black hole, and show that this yields the correct leading behaviour for large damping.

Magic Coset Decompositions

By exploiting a "mixed" non-symmetric Freudenthal-Rozenfeld-Tits magic square, two types of coset decompositions are analyzed for the non-compact special Kähler symmetric rank-3 coset E7(-25)/[(E6(-78) x U(1))/Z_3], occurring in supergravity as the vector multiplets' scalar manifold in N=2, D=4 exceptional Maxwell-Einstein theory. The first decomposition exhibits maximal manifest covariance, whereas the second (triality-symmetric) one is of Iwasawa type, with maximal SO(8) covariance. Generalizations to conformal non-compact, real forms of non-degenerate, simple groups "of type E7" are presented for both classes of coset parametrizations, and relations to rank-3 simple Euclidean Jordan algebras and normed trialities over division algebras are also discussed.

Multi-Centered Invariants, Plethysm and Grassmannians

Motivated by multi-centered black hole solutions of Maxwell-Einstein theories of (super)gravity in D=4 space-time dimensions, we develop some general methods, that can be used to determine all homogeneous invariant polynomials on the irreducible (SL_h(p,R) x G4)-representation (p,R), where p denotes the number of centers, and SL_h(p,R) is the "horizontal" symmetry of the system, acting upon the indices labelling the centers. The black hole electric and magnetic charges sit in the symplectic representation R of the generalized electric-magnetic (U-)duality group G4. We start with an algebraic approach based on classical invariant theory, using Schur polynomials and the Cauchy formula. Then, we perform a geometric analysis, involving Grassmannians, Pluecker coordinates, and exploiting Bott's Theorem. We focus on non-degenerate groups G4 "of type E7" relevant for (super)gravities whose (vector multiplets') scalar manifold is a symmetric space. In the triality-symmetric stu model of N=2 supergravity, we explicitly construct a basis for the 10 linearly independent degree-12 invariant polynomials of 3-centered black holes.

On the Scalar Manifold of Exceptional Supergravity

We construct two parametrizations of the non compact exceptional Lie group G=E7(-25), based on a fibration which has the maximal compact subgroup K=(E6 x U(1))/Z_3 as a fiber. It is well known that G plays an important role in the N=2 d=4 magic exceptional supergravity, where it describes the U-duality of the theory and where the symmetric space M=G/K gives the vector multiplets' scalar manifold. First, by making use of the exponential map, we compute a realization of G/K, that is based on the E6 invariant d-tensor, and hence exhibits the maximal possible manifest [(E6 x U(1))/Z_3]-covariance. This provides a basis for the corresponding supergravity theory, which is the analogue of the Calabi-Vesentini coordinates. Then we study the Iwasawa decomposition. Its main feature is that it is SO(8)-covariant and therefore it highlights the role of triality. Along the way we analyze the relevant chain of maximal embeddings which leads to SO(8). It is worth noticing that being based on the properties of a "mixed" Freudenthal-Tits magic square, the whole procedure can be generalized to a broader class of groups of type E7.

Squaring the Magic

We construct and classify all possible Magic Squares (MS's) related to Euclidean or Lorentzian rank-3 simple Jordan algebras, both on normed division algebras and split composition algebras. Besides the known Freudenthal-Rozenfeld-Tits MS, the single-split Günaydin-Sierra-Townsend MS, and the double-split Barton-Sudbery MS, we obtain other 7 Euclidean and 10 Lorentzian novel MS's. We elucidate the role and the meaning of the various non-compact real forms of Lie algebras, entering the MS's as symmetries of theories of Einstein-Maxwell gravity coupled to non-linear sigma models of scalar fields, possibly endowed with local supersymmetry, in D = 3, 4 and 5 space-time dimensions. In particular, such symmetries can be recognized as the U-dualities or the stabilizers of scalar manifolds within space-time with standard Lorentzian signature or with other, more exotic signatures, also relevant to suitable compactifications of the so-called M*- and M'- theories. Symmetries pertaining to some attractor U-orbits of magic supergravities in Lorentzian space-time also arise in this framework.

A new CY elliptic fibration and tadpole cancellation

Tadpole cancellation in Sen limits in F-theory was recently studied by Aluffi and Esole. We extend their results, generalizing the elliptic fibrations they used and obtaining a new case of universal tadpole cancellation, at least numerically. We could not find an actual Sen limit having the correct brane content, and we argue that such a limit may not exist. We also give a uniform description of the fibration used by Aluffi and Esole as well as a new, simple, fibration which has non-Kodaira type fibers.

E7 groups from octonionic magic square

In this paper we continue our program, started in [2], of building up explicit generalized Euler angle parameterizations for all exceptional compact Lie groups. Here we solve the problem for E7, by first providing explicit matrix realizations of the Tits construction of a Magic Square product between the exceptional octonionic algebra J and the quaternionic algebra H, both in the adjoint and the 56 dimensional representations. Then, we provide the Euler parametrization of E7 starting from its maximal subgroup U=(E6 x U(1))/Z3. Next, we give the constructions for all the other maximal compact subgroups.

Eluding SUSY at every genus on stable closed string vacua

In closed string vacua, ergodicity of unipotent flows provide a key for relating vacuum stability to the UV behavior of spectra and interactions. Infrared finiteness at all genera in perturbation theory can be rephrased in terms of cancelations involving only tree-level closed strings scattering amplitudes. This provides quantitative results on the allowed deviations from supersymmetry on perturbative stable vacua. From a mathematical perspective, diagrammatic relations involving closed string amplitudes suggest a relevance of unipotent flows dynamics for the Schottky problem and for the construction of the superstring measure.

Uniformization, Unipotent Flows and the Riemann Hypothesis

We prove equidistribution of certain multidimensional unipotent flows in the moduli space of genus $g$ principally polarized abelian varieties (ppav). This is done by studying asymptotics of $\pmbΓ_{g} \sim Sp(2g,\mathbb{Z})$-automorphic forms averaged along unipotent flows, toward the codimension-one component of the boundary of the ppav moduli space. We prove a link between the error estimate and the Riemann hypothesis. Further, we prove $\pmbΓ_{g - r}$ modularity of the function obtained by iterating the unipotent average process $r$ times. This shows uniformization of modular integrals of automorphic functions via unipotent flows.

Equidistribution Rates, Closed String Amplitudes, and the Riemann Hypothesis

We study asymptotic relations connecting unipotent averages of $Sp(2g,\mathbb{Z})$ automorphic forms to their integrals over the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties. We obtain reformulations of the Riemann hypothesis as a class of problems concerning the computation of the equidistribution convergence rate in those asymptotic relations. We discuss applications of our results to closed string amplitudes. Remarkably, the Riemann hypothesis can be rephrased in terms of ultraviolet relations occurring in perturbative closed string theory.

Iwasawa N=8 Attractors

Starting from the symplectic construction of the Lie algebra e_7(7) due to Adams, we consider an Iwasawa parametrization of the coset E_7(7)/SU(8), which is the scalar manifold of N=8, d=4 supergravity. Our approach, and the manifest off-shell symmetry of the resulting symplectic frame, is determined by a non-compact Cartan subalgebra of the maximal subgroup SL(8,R) of E_7(7). In absence of gauging, we utilize the explicit expression of the Lie algebra to study the origin of E_7(7)/SU(8) as scalar configuration of a 1/8-BPS extremal black hole attractor. In such a framework, we highlight the action of a U(1) symmetry spanning the dyonic 1/8-BPS attractors. Within a suitable supersymmetry truncation allowing for the embedding of the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole, this U(1) is interpreted as nothing but the global R-symmetry of pure N=2 supergravity. Moreover, we find that the above mentioned U(1) symmetry is broken down to a discrete subgroup Z_4, implying that all 1/8-BPS Iwasawa attractors are non-dyonic near the origin of the scalar manifold. We can trace this phenomenon back to the fact that the Cartan subalgebra of SL(8,R) used in our construction endows the symplectic frame with a manifest off-shell covariance which is smaller than SL(8,R) itself. Thus, the consistence of the Adams-Iwasawa symplectic basis with the action of the U(1) symmetry gives rise to the observed Z_4 residual non-dyonic symmetry.

The Step-Harmonic Potential

We analyze the behavior of a quantum system described by a one-dimensional asymmetric potential consisting of a step plus a harmonic barrier. We solve the eigenvalue equation by the integral representation method, which allows us to classify the independent solutions as equivalence classes of homotopic paths in the complex plane. We then consider the propagation of a wave packet reflected by the harmonic barrier and obtain an expression for the interaction time as a function of the peak energy. For high energies we recover the classical half-period limit.

Supersymmetric AdS_4 black holes and attractors

Using the general recipe given in arXiv:0804.0009, where all timelike supersymmetric solutions of N=2, D=4 gauged supergravity coupled to abelian vector multiplets were classified, we construct the first examples of genuine supersymmetric black holes in AdS_4 with nonconstant scalar fields. This is done for various choices of the prepotential, amongst others for the STU model. These solutions permit to study the BPS attractor flow in AdS. We also determine the most general supersymmetric static near-horizon geometry and obtain the attractor equations in gauged supergravity. As a general feature we find the presence of flat directions in the black hole potential, i.e., generically the values of the moduli on the horizon are not completely specified by the charges. For one of the considered prepotentials, the resulting moduli space is determined explicitely. Still, in all cases, we find that the black hole entropy depends only on the charges, in agreement with the attractor mechanism.

All timelike supersymmetric solutions of N=2, D=4 gauged supergravity coupled to abelian vector multiplets

The timelike supersymmetric solutions of N=2, D=4 gauged supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number of abelian vector multiplets are classified using spinorial geometry techniques. We show that the generalized holonomy group for vacua preserving N supersymmetries is GL((8-N)/2,C) $\ltimes$ N/2 C^((8-N)/2) $\subseteq$ GL(8,R), where N=0,2,4,6,8. The spacetime turns out to be a fibration over a three-dimensional base manifold with U(1) holonomy and nontrivial torsion. Our results can be used to construct new supersymmetric AdS black holes with nontrivial scalar fields turned on.

The Dirac Equation in Kerr-Newman-AdS Black Hole Background

We consider the Dirac equation on the Kerr-Newman-AdS black hole background. We first perform the variable separation for the Dirac equation and define the Hamiltonian operator $\hat H$. Then we show that for a massive Dirac field with mass $μ\geq \frac{1}{2l}$ essential selfadjointness of $\hat H$ on $C_0^{\infty} ((r_+,\infty) \times S^2)^4$ is obtained even in presence of the boundary-like behavior of infinity in an asymptotically AdS black hole background. Furthermore qualitative spectral properties of the Hamiltonian are taken into account and in agreement with the existing results concerning the case of stationary axi-symmetric asymptotically flat black holes we infer the absence of time-periodic and normalizable solutions of the Dirac equation around the black hole in the non-extremal case.

BPS equations in N=2, D=5 supergravity with hypermultiplets

With the general aim to classify BPS solutions in N=2, D=5 supergravities interacting with an arbitrary number of vector, tensor and hypermultiplets, here we begin considering the most general electrostatic, spherical-symmetric BPS solutions in the presence of hypermultiplet couplings. We discuss the properties of the BPS equations and the restrictions imposed by their integrability conditions. We exhibit explicit solutions for the case of static BPS black-holes coupled to one (the so called universal) hypermultiplet.
